This paper deals with the usage of the particle/conjunction da from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspect. The research is conducted on the critical edition of the text Serbian Alexandrida, in which the base presents the transcript from the sixteenth century. The grammatical word da is attested through investigations of Old Serbian texts (from the 12th to the end of 15th century) in several usages: as a modal particle, optative and emphatical, as a sort of a paratactic conjunction (so called adjunctive da) and also as a hypotactic conjunction which could introduce both fi nal and complement clauses. The aim of this paper was to determine how much of the archaic condition is maintained in this text and how often the particle da is grammaticalized into hypotactic conjuction. The results of the research showed that in the analyzed corpus (text) particle da maintains its archaic usage, while its grammaticalization into hypotactic conjunction is at the beginning of the process. The relationship of this two usages can be presented by proportion 7,6:1. The complex conjunction jako da is attested in a bit more examples as a hypotactic conjunction then the simple conjunction da. Both types of fi nite dependent clauses are found in the same contexts as nominal forms, infi nitives end infi nitive constructions, which dominate as a complement of the verbs in this text. The obtained results, although not expected at the beginning, can be explained in two ways: either as a characteristic of the lower functional style of Serbian Church Slavonic language, or as a characteristic of the so called 'resavski' period in the history of the Serbian literature.
