INTRODUCTION: Fast food (FF) advertising is a potential risk factor for FF consumption among children, yet the impact of such advertising on children’s FF intake has not been assessed in a longitudinal, naturalistic study. Whether parents’ FF consumption mitigates advertising effects is also unknown. METHODS: One-year, longitudinal study among 624 preschool-age children, 3–5 years old, and one parent each recruited from New Hampshire, 2014–2015. Parents completed six online surveys every eight weeks and, at each, reported the number of times their children consumed FF in the past week. Each child’s advertisement exposure was determined by counting the brand-specific FF advertisements aired within the programs they viewed on children’s TV networks during the study. At baseline, parents reported the frequency of their own FF consumption. Data were analyzed in 2017–2018. RESULTS: Three FF brands targeted TV advertising to children during the study: McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Subway. Few children were exposed to child-targeted advertising for Wendy’s or Subway. Preschool age is a time when distinct eating behaviours are formed. Eating behaviours have been associated with underweight and poor growth as well as with overweight. However, the relationship between caregivers' feeding practices and children's eating behaviours remains poorly understood in developing countries. This study aims to evaluate the association between caregivers' feeding practices and eating behaviours among preschool children in Ethiopia. We conducted a school-based cross-sectional study among 542 caregivers of children aged between three and six years old. We used the Children Eating Behaviour Questionnaire and the Child Feeding Questionnaire to measure eating behaviour and caregivers' feeding practices respectively. A multiple linear regression was fitted to determine the association between caregivers' feeding practices and the multiple scales of children's eating behaviour while adjusting for potential confounders. Children whose caregivers practice food restriction tended to be more food responsive (β = .23, p < .001), tend to emotionally overeat (β = .09, p < .01), enjoy food more (β = 0.23, p < .001) and have more desire to drink (β = .24, p < .001). Meanwhile, children whose caregivers practiced pressure to eat were fussier about food (β = .09, p < .001), were more satiety responsive (β = .13, p < .001) and tended to eat slower (β = .10, p < .01). In Ethiopia, where under- and over-nutrition coexist among pre-school children, the results from this study underscore the importance of investigating eating behaviours at an early age, as these eating styles may contribute to children's poor nutritional status. It is also essential to include appropriate child eating behaviour and specific feeding practices components, together with responsive feeding in national nutritional programmes to improve the nutritional status of children aged 24-59 months.

Repeatedly offering vegetables has been shown to be one of the most effective methods for increasing acceptance and subsequent intake in young children. In order to increase successful offerings of vegetables and resultant consumption amongst young children, it is necessary to consider the influences on maternal reoffering of vegetables. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between mothers' tendency to reoffer vegetables and a range of demographic factors and psychological variables. A cross-sectional design was used, where mothers completed questionnaires assessing how often they reoffer rejected vegetables, concerns for economic factors, and a range of possible child and maternal influences. Mothers of preschool children were recruited from toddler groups across Leicestershire, UK, as well as online. Spearman's correlations were run to look for associations between demographic and psychological factors with maternal reoffering of vegetables. Significantly associated factors were then entered into a stepwise regression to predict maternal reoffering of vegetables. Mothers were significantly less likely to reoffer rejected vegetables if they were concerned about time, money, and waste, were influenced by their child's mood, or were concerned about their child having tantrums. Moreover, mothers who consumed more vegetables themselves reoffered vegetables more frequently. Regression analyses revealed that mothers' concern about food waste and tantrums, as well as maternal vegetable consumption, all significantly predicted mothers' reoffering of vegetables. With these findings in mind, mothers should be educated and supported with how to tackle and minimise children's tantrums during feeding, as well as being made aware of effective methods for avoiding food waste. Moreover, given that mothers' own vegetable consumption is associated with lower reoffering of vegetables to their child, interventions which seek to increase familial vegetable consumption should be pursued.

During early childhood, caregiver feeding practices (FP) influence children's diet and eating habits. Inconsistent methods of operationalizing FP have resulted in limited evidence regarding simultaneous FP patterns. This study examined the heterogeneity in FP among caregivers of preschoolers, along with the child, caregiver, and family characteristics associated with FP patterns. Caregivers of preschoolers (n = 437, 90% women) enrolled in 50 childcare centers across Maryland completed the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ) and provided demographic information and perceptions of their child's size and temperament. Exploratory Factor Analysis of CFPQ identified 13 factors, and latent profile analysis (LPA) empirically identified three FP classes. Using multinomial structural equation models, we regressed FP classes on child sex, race, age, poverty level, food insecurity education, caregiver perception of child size and temperament. The most common FP pattern (69%) reflected high coercive and control with low autonomy and structural practices (Controlling Class). A second pattern (16%) had high coercive control with moderate structural and autonomy practices (Regulating Class). The third pattern (15%) reflected moderate levels of all practices (Balancing Class). Caregivers who desired their child to be heavier (aOR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.22–0.72), were more financially secure (aOR = 0.80, 95%CI = 0.65–0.98), and were single (aOR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.18–0.80) were less likely to be in the Balancing versus Controlling class. For each unit increase in child temperament t-score [higher = difficult], caregivers were more likely to be in the Balancing (aOR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01–1.07) or Regulating class (aOR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01–1.08) compared to the Controlling class. In this statewide sample, many caregivers endorsed controlling behaviors without endorsing empowering behaviors to help children become healthy eaters. Future studies should examine how caregiver feeding practices evolve and relate to children's eating habits, growth, and development over time.

Foods of low nutritional quality are heavily marketed to children, and exposure to food ads shapes children's preferences and intake towards advertised foods. Whether food ad exposure independently relates to an overall lower diet quality among children remains unclear. We examined the association between ad-supported media use, a proxy for food ad exposure, and diet quality using the baseline data (2014-2015) from 535 3-5-year-olds in a community-based cohort study. Parents reported their child's dietary intake over 3 days via a diary, and diet quality was assessed with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2015) where higher scores reflect greater adherence to USDA dietary guidelines. Children's media exposure was measured through online parent surveys. Mean HEI score was 54.5 (SD = 9.4). In models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and metrics of parent diet quality, children's HEI scores were 0.5 points lower (adjusted beta = -0.5 [95% CI: 0.8, -0.1]; P 0.01) for each 1-h increment in weekly viewing of ad-supported children's TV networks. Children's use of media that may have food ads (e.g., apps, online games) also related to a lower diet quality yet to a lesser extent (adjusted beta -0.2 [-0.2, -0.1]; P 0.01). In contrast, children's ad-free media use was not associated with diet quality (P = 0.21). Findings support the premise that exposure to food advertisements via media may result in a lower quality diet among children independently of other risk factors.

Childhood obesity treatment involving parents is most effective during the preschool age. However, the mechanisms of change are not known. The present study reports on secondary outcomes (changes in parental feeding practices and child food intake) of early obesity treatment. The More and Less study is a randomized controlled trial conducted in Stockholm County, Sweden. Children with obesity (n = 174, mean BMI SDS 3.0, mean age 5 years, 56% girls) and their parents (60% with foreign background, 40% with a university degree) were randomized to: 1) standard treatment focusing on lifestyle recommendations (ST), 2) a parent support program with boosters (PGB), and 3) a parent support program without boosters (PGNB). The Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ) was used to measure parental feeding practices. Child food intake was assessed with a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). We calculated the monthly changes in CFQ practices and FFQ items based on four measurements. We did not find any significant between-group differences in parental feeding practices and child food intake over time. However, general linear models showed that changes in certain feeding practices predicted changes in child food intake. When ST was compared to the parent support groups, some associations moved in opposite directions. For example, increasing maternal restriction predicted increased consumption of cookies/buns in PGNB (b = 2.3, p 0.05) and decreased consumption of cookies/buns in ST (b = -2.1, p 0.05). This is among the few studies to examine the effect of parental feeding practices on child food intake and weight status after obesity treatment among preschoolers. We found no evidence that changes in feeding practices or changes in child food intake mediated child weight loss. Future studies should consider other intermediary processes related to general parenting practices and parent-child interactions.

Background Conditioned eating in response to external food cues may contribute to obesity risk in young children. Objectives To develop a brief, parent-reported scale to measure external food cue responsiveness for preschool-age children. Methods Focus groups with parents of preschool-age children were conducted to create an initial pool of items reflecting children's behavioral responses to external food cues. Items were included in a nationally-distributed online survey of parents of preschool-age children (n = 456). Factor analysis was used to reduce the initial item pool, the scale's psychometric properties were assessed, and scores were correlated with reported snacking behaviors. Results Nine items met inclusion criteria in the final scale, which had high internal consistency (alpha = 0.86). Final scores were the mean across the nine items. External food cue responsiveness was greater among children with, versus without, usual TV advertisement exposure. Furthermore, greater external food cue responsiveness mediated the relationship between children's usual TV advertisement exposure and snacking during TV viewing. Findings remained statistically significant when adjusted for food responsiveness as measured with the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Conclusions Findings provide preliminary evidence that external food cue responsiveness is measurable by parental report in preschool-age children.

The purpose of this study was to refine and psychometrically test an instrument measuring the home food and activity environment of geographically and economically diverse families of preschool aged children. Caregivers of preschool aged children (n = 83) completed a modified self-report questionnaire. Reliably trained researchers conducted independent observations on 25 randomly selected homes. Agreement statistics were conducted at the item level (154 total items) to determine reliability. Frequency counts were calculated to identify item availability. Results showed Kappa statistics were high (.67-1.00) between independent researchers but varied between researchers and parents resulting in 85 items achieving criterion validity (Kappa.60). Analyses of reliable items revealed the presence in the home of a high frequency of unhealthy snack foods, high fat milk and low frequency of availability of fruits/vegetables and low fat milk. Fifty-two percent of the homes were arranged with a television in the preschool child's bedroom. Physical Activity devices also were found to have high frequency availability. Families reporting lower education reported higher levels of sugar sweetened beverages and less low-fat dairy (p .05) compared with higher education families. Low-income families ($27K per year) reported significantly fewer Physical Activity devices (p .001) compared with higher income families. Hispanic families reported significantly higher numbers of Sedentary Devices (p .05) compared with non-Hispanic families. There were no significant differences between demographic comparisons on available fruits/vegetables, meats, whole grains, and regular fat dairy. A modified home food and activity instrument was found to reliably identify foods and activity devices with geographically and economically diverse families.

Contains fulltext : 90138.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The present study experimentally tested the effects of adult targeted food commercials (energy-dense and light food products) on actual snack food intake in young children while watching television. Furthermore, the moderating role of maternal behaviors was investigated. The children (N = 121, aged between 8 and 12 years) were exposed to a neutral movie that was interrupted by two commercial breaks. These breaks contained commercials promoting either energy-dense foods, low energy versions of the same energy-dense foods (light food commercials), or neutral commercials aimed at adults. Snack food intake during watching television was measured. Children filled out questionnaires and were weighed and measured afterwards. Children who perceived maternal encouragement to be thin ate slightly more when exposed to energy-dense food commercials and especially when exposed to light food commercials than when exposed to neutral commercials. In contrast, children who perceived no maternal encouragement to be thin ate more when exposed to neutral commercials than when exposed to either energy-dense food commercials or light food commercials. These findings suggest that exposure to adult targeted light food cues produced disinhibition in children who experienced maternal encouragement to be thin, resulting in elevated snack food intake. 7 p.

Despite agreement that snacks contribute significant energy to children’s diets, evidence of the effects of snacks on health, especially in children, is weak. Some of the lack of consistent evidence may be due to a non-standardized definition of snacks. Understanding how caregivers of preschool-aged children conceptualize and define child snacks could provide valuable insights on epidemiological findings, targets for anticipatory guidance, and prevention efforts. Participants were 59 ethnically-diverse (White, Hispanic, and African American), low-income urban caregivers of children age 3 to 5 years. Each caregiver completed a 60–90 minute semi-structured in-depth interview to elicit their definitions of child snacks. Data were coded by two trained coders using theoretically-guided emergent coding techniques to derive key dimensions of caregivers’ child snack definitions. Five interrelated dimensions of a child snack definition were identified: (1) types of food, (2) portion size, (3) time, (4) location, and (5) purpose. Based on these dimensions, an empirically-derived definition of caregivers’ perceptions of child snacks is offered: A small portion of food that is given in-between meals, frequently with an intention of reducing or preventing hunger until the next mealtime. These findings suggest interrelated dimensions that capture the types of foods and eating episodes that are defined as snacks. Child nutrition studies and interventions that include a focus on child snacks should consider using an a priori multi-dimensional definition of child snacks.

Total daily food intake of 16 preschool children 4-6 years of age were collected from 5 to 7 consecutive days. The most powerful determinant of the amount of food consumed at meals was amount served (r=0.77, P0.0001). Although intake at meals (snacks were considered a meals) was significantly negatively correlated with the amount and energy intake at the previous meal (r=-0.27, P=0.0001), the amount served was also negatively correlated with the amount served at the previous meal (P0.02). Children did not adjust the amount consumed in response to the energy density of the meal resulting in an energy intake that was directly related to the energy density of the meals (P0.0001). In addition, intake at meals was not depressed by energy consumed as snacks between meals. The present results indicate that eating behavior of children is similar to adults in that they display very poor regulation of energy intake and are responsive to environmental stimuli. The conclusion from this study is that both the cause of overweight in children, as well as its prevention, may lie in the hands of the caregiver.

The associations of parental feeding practices and feeding style with childhood obesity have gained more attention in the literature recently; however, fathers are rarely included within these studies. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship of paternal feeding practices on child diet quality, weight status, and eating behavior, and the moderating effect of paternal feeding style on these relationships in preschool age children. This study included a one-time, one-on-one interview with biological fathers of preschoolers (n = 150) to assess feeding practices (Child Feeding Questionnaire), feeding style (Caregiver Feeding Style Questionnaire), child eating behaviors (Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire), and diet quality (24 hour recall, Healthy Eating Index). Height and weight for each father and child were also measured and Body Mass Index (BMI) or BMI z-score calculated. Linear regression was used to test the relationship between paternal feeding practices, style and child diet quality and/or body weight. Overall, the findings revealed that a father's feeding practices and feeding style are not associated with children's diet quality or weight status. However, child eating behaviors are associated with child BMI z-score and these relationships are moderated by paternal feeding practices. For example, child satiety responsiveness is inversely (β = −.421, p = 0.031) associated with child BMI z-score only if paternal restriction scores are high. This relationship is not significant when paternal restriction scores are low (β = −.200, p = 0.448). These results suggest that some child appetitive traits may be related to child weight status when exposed to certain paternal feeding practices. Future studies should consider the inclusion of fathers as their feeding practices and feeding style may be related to a child's eating behavior.

Objectives: Fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption is influenced by individual taste and food preferences that are developed early in life. Thus, the sensory properties of foods given during complementary feeding may shape later food acceptance and dietary intake. However, those experiences differ with respect to the preparation method of complementary food (CF), that is, homemade and commercial CF. The aim of this study therefore was to examine the association between the infant's consumption of commercial CF and FV intake and variety during infancy, preschool and school age. Methods: In total, 281 children of the DONALD Study with 3-day weighed dietary records at 0.5 and 0.75 (infancy), 3 and 4 (preschool age), 6 and 7 years of age (school age) were included in this analysis. Percentage of commercial CF (%cCF) was averaged at 0.5 and 0.75 years. Individual FV intake (g/day) and FV variety scores were calculated and averaged separately for all three age groups. Multivariate linear regression was used to analyse associations between %cCF and FV intake and variety. Models were adjusted for early life and socioeconomic factors. Results: For boys, higher %cCF was associated with lower vegetable intake in infancy (p < 0.0001) and preschool age (p = 0.036) as well as lower total FV intake in preschool and school age (p < 0.009). For girls, higher %cCF was associated with lower vegetable intake (p < 0.0001) in infancy. FV variety scores showed no clear associations with %cCF in girls and boys. Conclusion: The results of the DONALD Study suggest that the preparation method of CF is associated with FV consumption in infancy and at least for boys also in preschool and school age.

Food preferences are widely agreed to be important determinants of eating behaviour in young children. Existing studies of methods of assessing preferences have suggested tasting and ranking foods can generate reliable responses with young children, but there have been few attempts to assess other methods which might provide a more convenient alternative in situations where the use of real foods could be difficult (e.g. outside the laboratory), or tasting could be undesirable (e.g. if there are large numbers of foods, or foods which children would be unwilling to taste). The present study is a comparison of the reliability of preferences measured using: (i) real foods; (ii) food photographs; and (iii) food models, in 3 to 5-year-old children. The results showed that the tasting method produced good results, replicating existing data from U.S. samples. Food photographs came a close second in reliability but food models produced unreliable rankings, especially in the youngest group. Five-year-olds produced significantly more consistent results than the younger children. These results indicate that using real foods as the stimuli produces the most reliable taste preferences with children in this young age range, but photographs may provide a convenient alternative with adequate reliability.

We obtained measures of behavioral neophobia, rated neophobia, temperament, and liking for novel and familiar foods for 81 pairs of siblings (ranging in age from 5–11 yearsand their mothers. The children's data revealed a decrease with age in behavioral but not rated neophobia, and there were positive correlations between both measures of neophobia and the temperament dimensions of emotionality, shyness, and negative reactions to foods. In addition, liking for good-tasting novel foods was negatively related to shyness and to negative reactions to foods. For mothers, both measures of neophobia were related to negative reactions to foods and unrelated to any other temperament dimension. The data revealed little evidence of family resemblance (mother-child or sibling-siblingin food neophobia.
