Abstract

The interference of lactobacillus metabolites to the adhesion of Escherichia coli K88 in the gastrointestinal ecosystem is discussed. An in vitro adhesion assay was used on porcine lactobacillus-produced metabolites acting on the adhesion mechanism of K88 fimbria-bearing cells. It was found that the adhesion of K88-bearing cells are reduced due to the mucus affecting proteinaceous component released into the culture supernatant by the lactobacillus metabolites.
