Meeting the growing electricity demand in many developing countries is a major challenge as there is a shortage in power generation. This paper proposes a novel strategy for mitigating the effect of weather intermittency on the scheduling power interruption of residential houses. The proposed method involves optimal scheduling strategy for the electricity supply of these houses in a distribution grid and weather temperature prediction using a probability paper plot is deployed. Data training is achieved through the Monte-Carlo Simulation, and the prediction model is validated through error analysis. Using this method, novel power interruption schedules, based on maximizing houses’ accessibility to electricity and considering consumers’ fairness of accessing electricity services on hourly basis, have been designed. The design considers two optimization problems, scheduling electricity supply and validating the schedule in the power distribution grid by ensuring no violations of grid operational requirements. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis has been conducted to investigate the effect of scaling up the demand from the house context on enabling electricity access to such houses. The effect of conservative voltage reduction schemes on energy consumption reduction has also been explored. The studied results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in enabling electricity access of new regions accommodated in the grid by up to 47.6% which increases the profit of the power utility from residential electricity bill payments. Concerns about the reliability of electricity supplies have motivated researches to investigate the possibility of electrical consumers to take a more active role in the operations of the power system. The work in this paper looks into the potential of an industrial chemical plant to provide support to the electricity grid by means of demand-side response (DR) programs. To do so, this paper proposes a method to assess the flexibility of the plant to provide electrical power reserves while ensuring that the production demand is satisfied, as well as an economic analysis of the plant operations incorporating DR programs to quantify the incentives the plant should receive in order to participate in these programs. Therefore, the current study presents a novel optimization framework which integrates production scheduling with DR programs, with the aim to determine optimal decisions for the operating conditions within the plant while safely providing services to the electricity grid. With the increasing negative effects of fossil fuel combustion, many countries have paid more attention on supporting environmentally friendly energy generation, particularly renewable and sustainable energy sources (RES). However, renewables still cannot economically compete with fossil-fuels and are facing new challenges. Appropriate electricity pricing mechanism plays a vital role on mitigating the stress of limited fossil fuels and can promote renewable energy consumption. As one major type of renewable energy, wind power has been globally promoted. In order to promote the application of wind power, appropriate wind power prices (WPP) should be established by considering the local conditions. This paper targets such a field and conducts a bibliometric and network analysis based on the data from Scopus. The results show that the numbers of total related publications are gradually increasing, with the US as the leading country. European countries also have outstanding achievements. Moreover, both the most cited articles and keywords distribution offer future research directions. In general, this study provides valuable insights to both wind power researchers and practitioners. Environmental performance (EP) uncertainties span a number of energy technology options, and pose planning risk when the energy system is subject to environmental constraints. This paper presents two approaches to integrating EP uncertainty into the long-term energy planning framework. The methodologies consider stochastic EP metrics across multiple energy technology options, and produce a development strategy that hedges against the risk of exceeding environmental targets. Both methods are compared within a case study of emission-constrained electricity generation planning in British Columbia, Canada. The analysis provides important insight into model formulation and the interactions with concurrent environmental policy uncertainties. EP risk is found to be particularly important in situations where environmental constraints become increasingly stringent. As a response to climate change and the desire to gain independence from imported fossil fuels, there is a pressure to increase the proportion of electricity from renewable sources which is one of the reasons why electricity grids are currently being turned into Smart Grids. In this paper, we focus on private consumers’ acceptance of having Smart Grid technology installed in their home. We analyse acceptance in a combined framework of the Technology Acceptance Model and the Norm Activation Model. We propose that individuals are only likely to accept Smart Grid technology if they assess usefulness in terms of a positive impact for society and the environment. Therefore, we expect that Smart Grid technology acceptance can be better explained when the well-known technology acceptance parameters included in the Technology Acceptance Model are supplemented by moral norms as suggested by the Norm Activation Model. We tested this proposition by means of an online survey of Danish ( N = 323), Norwegian ( N = 303) and Swiss ( N = 324) private consumers. The study confirms that adding personal norms to the independent variables of the Technology Acceptance Model leads to a significant increase in the explained variance in consumer acceptance of Smart Grid technology in all three countries. Abstract: In a high wind penetration scenario in electricity production, the availability of models for synthetically generating hourly wind speed data becomes increasingly important for both sizing and modeling integrated renewable systems. A methodology for generating hourly wind speed time series is presented in this paper, adopting a physical-statistical approach based on some known aggregate input data. The proposed approach, developed in a previous study by the same authors, has been here improved using a new diurnal wind speed profile function. The improved methodology is first described and validated through experimental wind speed data, comparing the results with those obtained using the basic model. Then, hourly wind speeds generated with the improved methodology are used as input data for the optimal design of grid-connected and off-grid wind power plants. For each configuration, the influence of the diurnal wind speed profile and wind regime on system sizing and its economic parameters has been evaluated. Results have shown that the diurnal variation of wind speed does not affect the size of wind turbine, but strongly influences the storage capacity of off-grid wind power plants. Abstract: Cooling systems consume up to 25% of the total electricity used on deep level mines. These systems are integrated with the water reticulation system to provide chilled service water to the mine as well as cooling for mine ventilation air. Although there is definite potential for demand-side management on these systems, it is critical that the service delivery be maintained so as not to adversely affect productivity. An energy saving strategy based on variable water flow was developed for the unique demands of integrated mine cooling systems. The strategy is based on matching the evaporators with the demand of chilled water; condensers adapting to the heat load; and the bulk air cooler matching the demand of ventilation air requirements. In this paper, a case study is presented in which the savings and consequences of implementing the developed energy saving strategy are investigated. It is shown that a decrease of 31.5% in overall electrical energy usage is possible without affecting the service delivery or performance of the cooling system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In spite of the rapid development and introduction of renewable and alternative resources, coal still continues to be the most significant fuel to meet the global electricity demand. Emission from existing coal based power plants is, besides others, identified as one of the major sources of anthropogenic carbon dioxide, responsible for climate change. Advanced coal based power plants with acceptable efficiency and low carbon dioxide emission are therefore in sharp focus for current development. The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant with pre-combustion carbon capture is a prospective technology option for this purpose. However, such plants currently have limitations regarding fuel flexibility, performance, etc. In an EU initiative (H2-IGCC project), possible improvements of such plants are being explored. These involve using premix combustion of undiluted hydrogen-rich syngas and improved fuel flexibility without adversely affecting the availability and reliability of the plant and also making minor modifications to existing gas turbines for this purpose. In this paper, detailed thermodynamic models and assumptions of the preliminary configuration of such a plant are reported, with performance analysis based on available practical data and information. The overall efficiency of the IGCC power plant with carbon capture is estimated to 36.3% (LHV). The results confirm the fact that a significant penalty on efficiency is associated with the capture of CO2. This penalty is 21.6% relative to the IGCC without CO2 capture, i.e. 10.0% points. Estimated significant performance indicators as well as comparisons with alternative schemes have been presented. Abstract: Thermal energy storage (TES) is widely recognized as a means to integrate renewable energies into the electricity production mix on the generation side, but its applicability to the demand side is also possible. In recent decades, TES systems have demonstrated a capability to shift electrical loads from high-peak to off-peak hours, so they have the potential to become a powerful instrument in demand-side management programs (DSM). Thermal storage is a technology that ensures energy security, efficiency and environmental quality. Of particular interest are applications where TES systems help manage the mismatch between availability of renewable electricity and the demand for electricity in buildings where hot water, heating and cooling are delivered by heat pumps and air conditioning for example. Thus this paper demonstrates the state of the art of present applications of thermal storage for demand-side management. A particular focus of this work is the attention paid to the characteristics of DSM and their relationship to different thermal storage systems. If TES effectiveness for the abovementioned applications is demonstrated, TES devices have a small percentage of the potential market. Abstract: Turkey has remarkable wind energy potential, but its utilisation rate is very low. However, in 2007, energy investors applied to the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) with 751 wind projects to obtain a 78180.2MW wind power plant license. This paper first presents an overview of wind energy development in the world and then reviews related situations in Turkey. Second, to motivate the interest in wind energy investment, new wind power plant license applications in Turkey are analysed. Finally, wind electricity generation cost analyses were performed at 14 locations in Turkey. Capacity factors of investigated locations were calculated between 19.7% and 56.8%, and the production cost of electrical energy was between 1.73 and 4.99$cent/kWh for two different wind shear coefficients.
