Abstract: This paper introduced the concept, potential application and benefits relating to a novel solar photovoltaic/loop-heat-pipe (PV/LHP) heat pump system for hot water generation. On this basis, the paper reported the process and results of characterizing the performance of such a system, which was undertaken through dedicated thermo-fluid and energy balance analyses, computer model development and operation, and experimental verification and modification. The fundamental heat transfer, fluid flow and photovoltaic governing equations were applied to characterize the energy conversion and transfer processes occurring in each part and whole system layout; while the energy balance approach was utilized to enable inter-connection and resolution of the grouped equations. As a result, a dedicated computer model was developed and used to calculate the operational parameters, optimise the geometrical configurations and sizes, and recommend the appropriate operational condition relating to the system. Further, an experimental rig was constructed and utilized to acquire the relevant measurement data that thus enabled the parallel comparison between the simulation and experiment. It is concluded that the testing and modelling results are in good agreement, indicating that the model has the reasonable accuracy in predicting the system’s performance. Under the given experimental conditions, the electrical, thermal and overall efficiency of the PV/LHP module were around 10%, 40% and 50% respectively; whilst the system’s overall performance coefficient (COPPV/T ) was 8.7. Impact of the operational parameters (i.e. solar radiation, air temperature, air velocity, heat-pump’s evaporation temperature, glazing covers, and number of the absorbing heat pipes) to the performance of the system (in terms of efficiencies of the PV/LHP module and the system’s overall performance coefficient COPPV/T ) was investigated individually. The results indicated that lower solar radiation, lower air temperature, higher air velocity and smaller cover number led to enhanced electrical efficiency but reduced thermal efficiency of the module; whereas lower heat-pump’s evaporation temperature and larger number of heat absorbing pipes gave rise to both thermal and electrical efficiencies of the module. The research results would assist in developing a high efficient solar (space or hot water) heating system and thus contribute to realisation of the energy saving and associated carbon emission targets set for buildings globally. Abstract: Combustion in fired heaters, boilers and furnaces often accounts for the major energy consumption on industrial processes. Small improvements in efficiency can result in large reductions in energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and operating costs. This paper will describe some useful low cost modelling techniques based on the zone method to help identify energy saving opportunities on high temperature fuel-fired process plant. The zone method has for many decades, been successfully applied to small batch furnaces through to large steel-reheating furnaces, glass tanks, boilers and fired heaters on petrochemical plant. Zone models can simulate both steady-state furnace operation and more complex transient operation typical of a production environment. These models can be used to predict thermal efficiency and performance, and more importantly, to assist in identifying and predicting energy saving opportunities from such measures as: [•] Improving air/fuel ratio and temperature controls. [•] Improved insulation. [•] Use of oxygen or oxygen enrichment. [•] Air preheating via flue gas heat recovery. [•] Modification to furnace geometry and hearth loading. There is also increasing interest in the application of refractory coatings for increasing surface radiation in fired plant. All of the techniques can yield savings ranging from a few percent upwards and can deliver rapid financial payback, but their evaluation often requires robust and reliable models in order to increase confidence in making financial investment decisions. This paper gives examples of how low cost modelling techniques can be applied to improve confidence in implementing energy efficiency improvements whilst safeguarding manufacturing output and quality. Abstract: Thermodynamic optimization models of gas-hydrate cool storage and cool release processes are established in this paper. The optimal temperature configuration at the sensible heat transfer stage and the optimal gas hydrate phase change rate configuration at the phase change stage in the processes of gas hydrate charging and discharging are obtained by taking entropy generation minimization as optimization objective. The optimal control strategies of the cool storage system are determined. The research results indicate that the optimal operating characteristic of the gas-hydrate cool storage system can be achieved by keeping the phase change rates uniform, which are regulated and controlled according to constant heat transfer rates in the charging and discharging processes of gas hydrate. The analysis method and the results presented in this paper can provide important guidelines for optimal design and operation of gas-hydrate cool storage system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents a novel hybrid between a tubular solar receiver and a combustor, called the Hybrid Solar Receiver Combustor (HSRC), and reports on the development and application of an analytical model to describe its performance. The analytical model accounts for the variability of the solar resource with a pseudo steady state balance of the mass and energy flow, which calculates the heat transfer throughout the device. A systematic investigation of the influence of variation in all controlling parameters on performance and weight is undertaken. The results provide new understanding of the performance of the device relative to the solar-only and combustion-only counterparts, and further justification for its ongoing development. Abstract: Continuous frying systems are very energy intensive. They also involve the interaction of many variables and complex heat and mass transfer processes. Better control of these processes can lead not only to improved product quality but also energy reduction. This paper presents a model that can simulate the dynamic behaviour of a continuous frying system in sufficient detail that enables the influence of controls on the important product attributes of moisture and oil content to be investigated. A conjugate 2-D transient model of the fryer was used to develop correlations for the oil and moisture content based on the important fryer control variables, namely supply oil temperature, potato mass throughput, fryer paddle velocity and crisp takeout velocity. The correlations were validated against data for an industrial continuous fryer system and used within the overall frying system model which was implemented in MATLAB. Proportional Integral (PI) controls implemented within the MATLAB/Simulink environment have shown that closer control of the important parameters can lead to 10% energy savings compared to the actual industrial frying system. Abstract: One of the main drawbacks in modeling absorption chillers is the lack of justified hypotheses of heat and mass diffusion in an annular flow on the outer surface of horizontal tubes. Heat and mass transfer in diffusion is a three-dimensional problem with vector characteristics. This paper introduces the characterization of vapor–absorbent heat and mass transfer phenomena in three dimensional space to obtain steady state simulation results for single effect LiBr–H2O absorption chillers. It is thus possible for the first time to ascertain in the simulation that the heat and mass transfer characteristics are not uniform throughout the solution film. The diffusion boundary layer gradually becomes thicker towards the downstream tubes, which has previously been assumed but never confirmed in simulations. The radial component of the concentration field exhibits a potential for determining an optimum film thickness which enhances the system performance. The ability to use the proposed model with various absorbents and different cooling capacities increases its applicability. The model also offers the possibility to analyze different firing techniques at different temperatures. All the simulation results are consistent with the experimental data found in the literature. Abstract: This paper presents results obtained from a numerical simulation for the horizontal slinky-loop heat exchanger of a ground-source heat pump system. A three-dimensional numerical model was developed and the results of the thermal performance of various heat exchanger configurations are presented. The investigation was carried out on five types of loop pitch (loop spacing), three types of loop diameter, three values of soil thermal properties, and allowing continuous and intermittent operation. Comparison was made for the heat transfer rate, the amount of pipe material needed, as well as excavation work required for the horizontal slinky-loop heat exchanger. The results indicate that system parameters have a significant effect on the thermal performance of the system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper a numerical model to analyze the thermal behaviour of vertical ground heat exchangers with a helical shaped pipe is presented. This type of configuration can be a suitable alternative to conventional ground heat exchangers, especially when the heating and cooling loads of the building are very low. The model describes the heat transfer problem by means of a network of interconnected thermal resistances and capacitances. Moreover, as the investigated ground heat exchanger is usually installed in shallow depth, the model takes into account the interaction between the ground and the ambient environment which affects the fluid heat carrier temperature into the heat exchanger and, as a consequence, the energy efficiency of the heat pump. After a sensitivity analysis on the mesh parameters, the presented model is compared with experimental data and the simulation results show good agreement with the measurements. Finally, analyses to investigate the influence of the weather conditions, of the axial heat transfer and of the pitch between the turns of the helical pipe for two types of ground are carried out. Abstract: Thermal energy storage (TES) has shown potential in improving the overall performance in energy systems, through shifting of thermal load demand, and through matching of uneven energy availability in time and in space. Latent heat TESs demonstrate advantages over sensible heat TESs for their high storage density and small temperature swing; however, lack of accurate knowledge in novel material properties and lack in a holistic design protocol often lead to difficulties in reaching technically viable storage design. With the aim of proposing a sound latent heat based TES design-to-validation protocol, this paper covers material property characterization through Temperature-history (T-history) method, heat exchanger design through heat transfer modeling, and model validation through experimental verification. A model for submerged cylindrically finned heat exchanger latent heat storage unit with phase change material was built. The results show that performance of gelled salt-hydrate based TES can be assessed with a pure conduction based model. This material property characterization-to-model verification approach may serve as a standard in providing accurate storage design for performance evaluation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents a numerical modeling study of coupled thermodynamic, multiphase fluid flow and heat transport associated with underground compressed air energy storage (CAES) in lined rock caverns. Specifically, we explored the concept of using concrete lined caverns at a relatively shallow depth for which constructing and operation costs may be reduced if air tightness and stability can be assured. Our analysis showed that the key parameter to assure long-term air tightness in such a system was the permeability of both the concrete lining and the surrounding rock. The analysis also indicated that a concrete lining with a permeability of less than 1×10−18 m2 would result in an acceptable air leakage rate of less than 1%, with the operation pressure range between 5 and 8MPa at a depth of 100m. It was further noted that capillary retention properties and the initial liquid saturation of the lining were very important. Indeed, air leakage could be effectively prevented when the air-entry pressure of the concrete lining is higher than the operation air pressure and when the lining is kept at relatively high moisture content. Our subsequent energy-balance analysis demonstrated that the energy loss for a daily compression and decompression cycle is governed by the air-pressure loss, as well as heat loss by conduction to the concrete liner and surrounding rock. For a sufficiently tight system, i.e., for a concrete permeability of less than 1×10−18 m2, heat loss by heat conduction tends to become proportionally more important. However, the energy loss by heat conduction can be minimized by keeping the air-injection temperature of compressed air closer to the ambient temperature of the underground storage cavern. In such a case, almost all the heat loss during compression is gained back during subsequent decompression. Finally, our numerical simulation study showed that CAES in shallow rock caverns is feasible from a leakage and energy efficiency viewpoint. Our numerical approach and energy analysis will next be applied in designing and evaluating the performance of a planned full-scale pilot test of the proposed underground CAES concept. Abstract: Phase change materials (PCMs) can store large amounts of heat or cooling in a small amount of material, they potentially have less weight and volume compared with other thermal energy storage materials. Thermal energy storage applications such as solar hot water systems and off peak refrigeration systems are able to use PCMs to store heat or cooling. However, research has shown that the effectiveness of these systems heavily depends on the arrangement of the PCM system, which affects both the storage density and the thermal resistance to heat transfer. However, specifying as well as determining an effective PCM system has been difficult in the past because it involves using numerical modelling which is time consuming. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation carried out on a tube-in-tank design filled with PCM for cold storage applications. The PCMs used are salt hydrate with phase change temperature of −27°C and water. From the experimental measurements, the average heat exchange effectiveness of the storage tank was determined and a characteristic design curve has been developed as a function of the measured average NTU. Abstract: The objective of this paper is to study a method to achieve sub-wet bulb temperature by indirect evaporative cooling of air (without using a vapor compression machine). For this purpose, an analytical model is developed based on the effectiveness-NTU method (ε-NTU). The main idea for achieving a sub-wet bulb temperature by indirect evaporative cooling of air is by indirectly pre-cooling the working air before it enters the wet passage. It is shown that a modified analytical model for indirect evaporative coolers could be based on the ε-NTU method for sensible heat exchangers when proper adjustments are made by redefining the potential gradients, transfer coefficient, heat capacity rate parameters and assuming a linear saturation temperature-enthalpy relation of air. This modified model is used to find the performance of a regenerative indirect evaporative cooler. Abstract: In this paper, a three-dimensional hydrogen absorption model is developed to precisely study the hydrogen absorption reaction and resultant heat and mass transport phenomena in metal hydride hydrogen storage vessels. The 3D model is first experimentally validated against the temperature evolution data available in the literature. In addition to model validation, the detailed 3D simulation results show that at the initial absorption stage, the vessel temperature and H/M ratio distributions are uniform throughout the entire vessel, indicating that hydrogen absorption is very efficient early during the hydriding process; thus, the local cooling effect is not influential. On the other hand, non-uniform distributions are predicted at the subsequent absorption stage, which is mainly due to differential degrees of cooling between the vessel wall and core regions. In addition, a parametric study is carried out for various designs and hydrogen feed pressures. This numerical study provides a fundamental understanding of the detailed heat and mass transfer phenomena during the hydrogen absorption process and further indicates that efficient design of the storage vessel and cooling system is critical to achieve rapid hydrogen charging performance. Abstract: A number of design methods have been proposed for the retrofit of heat exchanger networks (HEN) during the last three decades. Although considerable potential for energy savings can be identified from conventional retrofit approaches, the proposed solutions have rarely been adopted in practice, due to significant topology modifications required and resulting engineering complexities during implementation. The intensification of heat transfer for conventional shell-and-tube heat exchangers can eliminate the difficulties of implementing retrofit in HEN which are commonly restricted by topology, safety and maintenance constraints, and includes high capital costs for replacing equipment and pipelines. This paper presents a novel design approach to solve HEN retrofit problems based on heat transfer enhancement. A mathematical model has been developed to evaluate shell-and-tube heat exchanger performances, with which heat-transfer coefficients and pressure drops for both fluids in tube and shell sides are obtained. The developed models have been compared with the Bell-Delaware, simplified Tinker and Wills–Johnston methods and tested with the HTRI® and HEXTRAN® software packages. This demonstrates that the new model is much simpler but can give reliable results in most cases. For the debottlenecking of HEN, four heuristic rules are proposed to identify the most appropriate heat exchangers requiring heat transfer enhancements in the HEN. The application of this new design approach allows a significant improvement in energy recovery without fundamental structural modifications to the network. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper investigates the transient heat conduction around the buried spiral coils which could be applied in the ground-coupled heat pump systems with the pile foundation as a geothermal heat exchanger. A transient ring-coil heat source model is developed, and the explicit analytical solutions for the temperature response are derived by means of the Green’s function theory and the image method. The influences of the coil pitch and locations are evaluated and discussed according to the solutions. In addition, comparisons between the ring-coil and cylindrical source models give that the improved finite ring-coil source model can accurately describe the heat transfer process of the pile geothermal heat exchanger (PGHE). Abstract: This paper presents experimental and numerical studies of the pressure drop in ceramic foams for solar air receiver applications. There are three main aims in this study. The first is to measure the pressure drop in the studied ceramic foams, and to build an empirical model based on the experimental results and a parametric numerical simulation. The second aim is to study flow field characteristics in the ceramic foams, especially in the vicinity of the interface. The third is to study the pressure drop characteristics of two modified structures (by manufacturing holes on the ceramic foams) that are expected to decrease the pressure drop in ceramic foams, but maintain good heat transfer properties. The experimental results from the samples, including two modified structures, along with the simulation results, show that the pressure drop in the ceramic foams follows a modified Darcy relationship. The experimental results also show that the two modified structures dramatically decrease the pressure drop (with pressure drop decreases up to 70% at a superficial velocity of 5m/s). Based on both the experimental and the simulation results, a generalized model for predicting the pressure drop in ceramic foams was proposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPVT) system has the potential to become a major source of renewable energy in the urban environment. In this paper, the system has been used as the roof top of a building to generate higher electrical energy per unit area and to produce necessary thermal energy required for space heating. One-dimensional transient model has been developed using basic heat transfer equations. On the basis of this model, an analysis has been carried in order to select an appropriate BIPVT system suitable for the cold climatic conditions of India. The PV performances, net energy gain and exergy of the building are determined. The results show that for a constant mass flow rate of air the system connected in series gives a better performance whereas for a constant velocity of air flow the system connected in parallel gives a better performance. The BIPVT system, fitted on the rooftop in an effective area of 65m2, is capable of annually producing the net electrical and thermal exergies of 16,209kWh and 1531kWh, respectively, at an overall thermal efficiency of 53.7%. Abstract: Due to its large apparent specific heat during the phase change period, microencapsulated phase change material slurry (MPCMS) has been suggested as a medium for heat transfer. In this paper, the convective heat transfer characteristics of MPCMS flowing in a circular tube were experimentally and numerically investigated. The enhanced convective heat transfer mechanism of MPCMS, especially in the thermal fully developed range, was analyzed by using the enthalpy model. Three kinds of fluid–pure water, micro-particle slurry and MPCMS were numerically investigated. The results show that in the phase change heat transfer region the Ste number and the Mr number are the most important parameters influencing the Nusselt number fluctuation profile and the dimensionless wall temperature. Reb , dp and c also influence the Nusselt number profile and the dimensionless wall temperature, but they are independent of phase change process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper presents the development of a complete analytical model of a thermoelectric generator (TEG). Based on data coming from a small number of easily obtainable measurements, the model makes it possible to determine basic parameters of the TEG. Owing to measurements performed in the steady state and immediately after a rapid change of the TEG electrical state, the following quantities can be established analytically: the Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity and thermal resistance between heat exchangers and the TEG. The applied rapid method is based on the large difference in inertia between the electric and the thermal field. A rapid change from the short-circuit to the open-circuit electrical state makes it possible to record the voltage for the system thermal state corresponding to the short circuit. Experimental tests were carried out on a commercially available thermoelectric generator and the results proved the developed model usefulness. The simulation results show that the thermal resistance of the contact layers between the heat exchangers and the thermoelectric generators caused a loss of the temperature difference of the junctions from 30% at the recommended mechanical load to even over 50% if the clamping force was too low. Due to that, the determined power ratio, being an indicator of the utilization of the theoretical power capacity of a system burdened with thermal resistance, reaches values lower than 40% for the required clamping force and is below 20% for improper contact conditions The impact of the accuracy of the measurements on the values of the system parameters obtained from the model is evaluated by means of sensitivity analysis.
