The Schmidt method is adopted to investigate the fracture problem of multiple parallel symmetric and permeable finite length mode-III cracks in a functionally graded piezoelectric/piezomagnetic material plane. This problem is formulated into dual integral equations, in which the unknown variables are the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces. In order to obtain the dual integral equations, the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces are directly expanded as a series of Jacobi polynomials. The results show that the stress, the electric displacement, and the magnetic flux intensity factors of cracks depend on the crack length, the functionally graded parameter, and the distance among the multiple parallel cracks. The crack shielding effect is also obviously presented in a functionally graded piezoelectric/piezomagnetic material plane with multiple parallel symmetric mode-III cracks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic interaction of two collinear interface cracks between two dissimilar functionally graded piezoelectric/piezomagnetic material strips subjected to the anti-plane shear harmonic stress waves was investigated. By using the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of a pair of triple integral equations in which the unknown variable is jump of displacement across the crack surfaces. These equations are solved using the Schmidt method. The behavior of a Mode-I interface crack in piezoelectric materials was investigated under the assumptions that the effect of the crack surface overlapping very near the crack tips was negligible. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations. To solve the dual integral equations, the jumps of the displacements across the crack surfaces were expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. It is found that the stress and the electric displacement singularities of the present interface crack solution are the same as ones of the ordinary crack in homogenous materials. The dynamic behavior of two collinear cracks in a piezoelectric layer bonded to two half spaces under harmonic anti-plane shear waves was investigated by means of Schmidt method. The cracks are vertically to the interfaces of the piezoelectric layer. The boundary conditions of the electrical field were assumed to be the permeable crack surface. By using the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of triple integral equations. Numerical examples were presented to show the effect of the geometry of the interacting cracks, the piezoelectric constants of the materials and the frequency of the incident waves upon the stress intensity factors. The results show that the dynamic field will impede or enhance the propagation of the crack in a piezoelectric material at different stages of the frequency of the incident waves. To solve the dual integral equations, the jump of the displacements across the crack surface was expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. Numerical examples were provided to show the effect of the length of the crack, the wave velocity and the circular frequency of the incident wave on the stress, the electric displacement and the magnetic flux intensity factors of the crack. The behaviors of an interface crack between dissimilar orthotropic elastic half-planes subjected to uniform tension was reworked by use of the Schmidt method. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations, of which the unknown variables are the jumps of the displacements across the crack surfaces. Numerical examples are provided for the stress intensity factors of the cracks. Contrary to the previous solution of the interface crack, it is found that the stress singularity of the present interface crack solution is of the same nature as that for the ordinary crack in homogeneous materials. The scattering of harmonic waves by two collinear symmetric cracks is studied using the non-local theory. A one-dimensional non-local kernel was used to replace a two-dimensional one for the dynamic problem to obtain the stress occurring at the crack tips. The Fourier transform was applied and a mixed boundary value problem was formulated. Then a set of triple integral equations was solved by using Schmidt's method. This method is more exact and more reasonable than Eringen's for solving this problem. Contrary to the classical elasticity solution, it is found that no stress singularity is present at the crack tip. The non-local dynamic elastic solutions yield a finite hoop stress at the crack tip, thus allowing for a fracture criterion based on the maximum dynamic stress hypothesis.
