Characterizing the novel properties of layered van der Waals materials is key for their application in functional devices. A better understanding of this type of material requires correlative imaging of diverse nanoscale material properties. Within this class of materials, CuInP2S6 (CIPS) has received a significant degree of interest due to its ionically mediated room temperature ferroelectricity. Moreover, it is possible to form stable self-assembled heterostructures of ferroelectric CuInP2S6 (CIPS) and non-ferroelectric (i.e., lacking Cu) In4/3P2S6 (IPS) phases, by controlling the targeted composition and kinetics of synthesis. In this work, we present a correlative nanometric imaging study of the phononic modes and piezoelectricity of the phase-separated thin heteroepitaxial CIPS/IPS flakes. We show that it is possible to isolate the different phononic modes of the two phases by spatially correlating them with their distinct ferroelectric behavior. The coupling of our experimental data with unsupervised learning statistical methods enables unraveling specific Raman peaks that are characteristic of each chemical phase (CIPS and IPS) present in the composite sample, discarding the less significant ones. The topologically protected, chiral soliton lattice is a unique state of matter offering intriguing functionality, and it may serve as a robust platform for storing and transporting information in future spintronic devices. While the monoaxial chiral magnet Cr1∕3NbS2 is known to host this exotic state in an applied magnetic field, its detailed microscopic origin has remained a matter of debate. Here, we work towards addressing this open question by measuring the spin wave spectrum of Cr1∕3NbS2 over the entire Brillouin zone with inelastic neutron scattering. The well-defined spin wave modes allow us to determine the values of several microscopic interactions for this system. The experimental data are well-explained by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with exchange constants up to the third nearest neighbor and an easy plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy term. Our work shows that both the second and third nearest neighbor exchange interactions contribute to the formation of the helimagnetic and chiral soliton lattice states in this robust three-dimensional magnet. We performed high-field magnetotransport and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the 122-phase iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Unlike the high-temperature superconductor cuprates and 1111-phase oxypnictides, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 showed practically no broadening of the resistive transitions under magnetic fields up to 45 T. We report the temperature dependencies of the upper critical field Hc2 both parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis, the irreversibility field Hirrc(T), and a rather unusual symmetric volume pinning force curve Fp(H) suggestive of a strong pinning nanostructure. The anisotropy parameter γ=Hc2ab/Hc2c deduced from the slopes of dHc2ab/dT=4.9 T/K and dHc2c/dT=2.5 T/K decreases from ∼2 near Tc, to ∼1.5 at lower temperatures, much smaller than γ for 1111pnictides and high-Tc cuprates. The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagnetic granularity on a scale approximating the grain size, though we cannot yet determine whether this is intrinsic or extrinsic.
