The primary β-Fe3Ge2 dendrite growth kinetics within liquid Fe71Ge29 eutectic alloy was studied by both acoustic levitation and electrostatic levitation techniques, with maximum experimental undercoolings of 130 and 143 K, respectively. At small undercoolings, (α1 + β-Fe3Ge2) eutectic growth proceeded and then transformed to lamellar (ε-Fe3Ge + β-Fe3Ge2) microstructure by peritectoid reaction. Once liquid undercooling reached 56 K, β primary phase started to nucleate preferentially and its maximum growth velocity attained 13.5 mm/s at 143 K undercooling. By acoustic levitation processing, β dendrites were distributed inside the alloy droplet. Under electrostatic levitation state, β dendrites were distributed both at the periphery and within the interior of alloy droplet, and their volume fraction was significantly higher than that under acoustic levitation. Numerical simulation results indicated that a duplex flow was induced by alloy droplet shape oscillation and acoustic streaming. The rapid dendrite growth in highly undercooled liquid Ni72Mo28 hypoeutectic alloy was accomplished by containerless processing via electromagnetic levitation and drop tube techniques. The (Ni) dendrites achieved a high growth velocity of 26 m/s at the maximum undercooling of 226 K (0.14 TL) under levitated state. Remarkable dendritic structure refinement and Mo solubility extension were observed with the increase in undercooling. For freely falling alloy droplets, the largest undercooling was enhanced to 246 K (0.15 TL), which resulted in thorough solute trapping and almost segregationless solidification. A microstructure transition from columnar dendrite to equiaxed dendrite took place once alloy undercooling exceeded a threshold about 74–79 K. In addition, the Vickers hardness of primary (Ni) dendrite was significantly improved, which was caused by the extension of Mo solubility and microstructure refinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phase selection mechanism within undercooled liquid Nb90Si10 hypoeutectic alloy was investigated by electrostatic levitation technique combined with deep neural network molecular dynamics. A stepwise-solidification procedure was conducted, where the primary phase and eutectic microstructure successively solidified from undercooled liquid alloy and undercooled residual liquid, respectively. The intermetallic phase of the eutectic structure transfers from Nb3Si to βNb5Si3 and finally into αNb5Si3 compound with the increase in liquid undercooling. The deep neural network molecular dynamic simulations have shown that the phase selection between Nb3Si and Nb5Si3 is mainly controlled by the short-range order of residual liquid, considering that the predominant short-range configuration transforms from Nb3Si-like to Nb5Si3-like structures. The αNb5Si3-like medium-range order, which is characterized by vertex-connected ⟨0,2,8,4⟩ clusters, is shown to significantly influence the competitive nucleation of the αNb5Si3 and βNb5Si3 phases. The residual liquid favors the αNb5Si3-like medium-range order rather than βNb5Si3 at large undercoolings, which explains the transformation from βNb5Si3 to αNb5Si3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The liquid Zr100-xSix (x = 1, 3, and 5) alloys were substantially undercooled by up to 392 K (0.19TL), 423 K (0.21TL), and 451 K (0.23TL), respectively, under the electrostatic levitation condition. The measured dendrite growth velocity of the primary βZr phase increased with the enhancement of liquid undercooling. Although the undercooling ability showed an increasing tendency with the increase in the Si content, dendrite growth was obviously depressed due to the dominance of solute diffusion controlled growth. Their critical undercoolings for kinetics transition from solute diffusion to thermal diffusion controlled growth were determined. The metastable coupled-growth kinetics between the primary Fe2Ti and peritectic FeTi phases of undercooled Fe54.5Ti45.5 alloy was systematically investigated by both electromagnetic levitation and drop tube techniques. Employing a high-speed camera, the rapid crystallization processes of levitated bulk alloy were recorded in the undercooling range of 34-187K. In small undercooling regime below 143 K, peritectic solidification proceeded and the dependence of primary Fe2Ti dendritic growth velocity V on the bulk undercooling ΔT satisfied a power relation of V=2.43×10-14 ×ΔT7.72 (mm s-1). Once liquid undercooling increased beyond 143K, the metastable coupledgrowth was induced and the microstructure was characterized by the Fe2Ti rods embedded in FeTi phase. Furthermore, the coupled-growth velocity decreased linearly with the rise in undercooling according to V=1.47×103-7.44 ΔT (mm s-1). In drop tube experiment, peritectic solidification characteristics of small alloy droplets disappeared and the primary and peritectic phases directly nucleated from undercooled liquid and grew cooperatively to form spherical coupled-growth cells if droplet diameter decreased below 481 lm.
