The authors report enhanced poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):methanofullerene (PCBM) bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic cells via 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) vapor treatment and thermal annealing. DCB vapor treatment can induce P3HT self-organizing into ordered structure leading to enhanced absorption and high hole mobility. Further annealing the device at a high temperature, PCBM molecules begin to diffuse into aggregates and together with the ordered P3HT phase form bicontinuous pathways in the entire layer for efficient charge separation and transport. Compared to the control device that is merely annealed, optical absorption, short-circuit current, and power conversion efficiency are increased for the DCB vapor-treated cell. Efficient inverted top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes with aluminum (Al) as both the cathode and semitransparent anode are investigated. It is found that introduction of the ultrathin molybdenum trioxide (MoO3)/fullerene (C60) bilayer structure between the low work function Al top anode and the hole-transporting layer dramatically enhances the device performance as compared to the devices with sole MoO3 or C60 buffer layer. The ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that the hole injection barrier between Al anode and hole-transporting layer is effectively reduced via strong dipole effect at Al/MoO3/C60 interfaces with its direction pointing from Al to C60. A doping technique for fabricating organic multiple-quantum-well electroluminescent (EL) devices is demonstrated. This device consists of N,N[sup ′]-Bis(3-methyphenyl)-N,N[sup ′]-diphenylbenzidine used as a hole transporter, undoped tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq) as a barrier potential or electron transporter, and Alq doped with 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene as a potential well and an emitter. Our experimental results suggest that the double-quantum-well EL devices show the optimum emission characteristics. Solution-processed zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocrystal modified with titanium oxide (TiOX) precursor is introduced as cathode interfacial layer in inverted bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. The resultant inverted polymer solar cell exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.87 V, a fill factor of 0.67, and an overall power conversion efficiency of 6.53%, respectively, higher than those of the control cells with sole ZnO or TiOX as the cathode interfacial layers. Further studies verify that the improved morphology and electronic structure of ZnO-TiOX composite layer favors reducing shunt loss and interfacial charge recombination and hence enhancing the photovoltaic performance. Efficient multilayer white polymer light-emitting diodes (WPLEDs) with aluminum cathodes are fabricated. The multilayer structure is composed of a water soluble hole-injection layer, a toluene-soluble emissive layer, and an alcohol-soluble emissive layer. The polarity difference of the solvents used for spin coating these polymers allows for realization of the multilayer polymer structure. The recombination zone confined at the interface of the two emissive polymers avoids exciton quenching by electrodes, and white emission is realized by harvesting photons emitted from the two emissive polymers. A maximum luminous efficiency of 16.9 cd/A and a power efficiency of 11.1 lm/W are achieved for this WPLED. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient blue polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been fabricated with a neutral alcohol-soluble polyfluorene, i.e., poly(9,9-bis(6′-diethoxylphosphorylhexyl)fluorene) (PF-EP), as the emitting layer, high work-function Al as the cathode, and poly(vinyl carbazole) as the hole-transporting layer. The PLEDs display a maximum luminous efficiency of 4.0 cd/A and the luminous efficiency >2.4 cd/A in a wide range of current densities. It is found that the promising performance of the devices is attributed to the fact that the PF-EP is not only an efficient blue light-emitting polymer, but it also can facilitate efficient electron injection at the Al/PF-EP interface. The efficient white polymeric light-emitting diodes based on a white emissive polymer doped with a red phosphorescent dopant were fabricated by spin-coating method. The emission spectrum of the device is broadened to cover the full visible region by doping the red phosphorescent dye and thereby realizes white emission with high color-rendering index (CRI). By controlling the contents of the doped electron-transporting 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and the red phosphorescent dopant, a luminous efficiency as high as 5.3 cd/A and a power efficiency of 3 lm/W were obtained with a CRI of 92.
