1. Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance with magnetic field modulation

Abstract

We demonstrate a technique of broadband spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) with magnetic field modulation for measurements of spin wave properties in magnetic nanostructures. This technique gives great improvement in sensitivity over the conventional ST-FMR measurements, and application of this technique to nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) reveals a rich spectrum of standing spin wave eigenmodes. Comparison of the ST-FMR measurements with micromagnetic simulations of the spin wave spectrum allows us to explain the character of low-frequency magnetic excitations in nanoscale MTJs. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract

Recently, the magnetic moment/Mn, M, in MnxSi1−x was measured to be 5.0 Bohr magneton/Mn, at x=0.1%. To understand this observed M, we investigate several MnxSi1−x models of alloys using first-principles density functional methods. The only model giving M=5.0 was a 513-atom cell having the Mn at a substitutional site, and Si at a second-neighbor interstitial site. The observed large moment is a consequence of the weakened d-p hybridization between the Mn and one of its nearest neighbor Si atoms, resulting from the introduction of the second-neighbor interstitial Si. Our result suggests a way to tune the magnetic moments of transition metal doped semiconductors.

Abstract

Hybrid improper ferroelectrics have their electric polarization generated by two or more combined non-ferroelectric structural distortions, such as the rotation and tilting of Ti-O octahedral in the Ca3Ti2O7 (CTO) family. In this work, we prepare the high quality (010)-oriented CTO thin films on (110) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The good epitaxial growth of the CTO thin films on the substrates with the interfacial epitaxial relationship of [001]CTO//[001]STO and [100]CTO//[-110]STO is revealed. The in-plane ferroelectric hysteresis unveils an ultralow coercive field of ~5 kV/cm even at low temperature, nearly two orders of magnitude lower than that of bulk CTO single crystals. The huge difference between the epitaxial thin films and bulk crystals is most likely due to the lattice imperfections in the thin films rather than substrate induced lattice strains, suggesting high sensitivity of the ferroelectric properties to lattice defects. 33. Detonation of insensitive high explosives by a Q-switched ruby laser.

Abstract

Immediate longitudinal detonations have been observed in confined small-diameter columns of PETN, RDX, and tetryl by using a focused Q-switched ruby laser. The energy ranged from 0.8 to 4.0 J in a pulse width of 25 nsec. A 1000-A-thick aluminum film deposited on a glass window was used to generate a shock wave at the window-explosive interface when irradiated by the laser. In some cases, steady-state detonations were reached in less than .5 microsec with less than 10% variation in the detonation velocity.

Abstract

p-type ultrathin 3C-SiC nanocrystals are coated on heat-treated n-type TiO2 nanotube arrays formed by electrochemical etching of Ti sheets to produce heterostructured photocatalysts. Depending on the amounts of 3C-SiC nanocrystals on the TiO2 nanotubes, photocatalytic degradation of organic species can be enhanced. The intrinsic electric field induced by the heterojunction promotes separation of the photoexcited electrons-holes in both the TiO2 nanotubes and 3C-SiC nanocrystals. Hence, holes can more effectively travel to the surface of 3C-SiC nanocrystals and there are more electrons on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes consequently forming more ·O2- and ·OH species to degrade organic molecules.
