Abstract

An InxGa1-xN based multiple quantum well structure emitting in the ultraviolet, which has the highest reported efficiency (67%) at its wavelength (380 nm), was analyzed with the three-dimensional atom probe. The results reveal gross discontinuities and compositional variations within the quantum well layers on a 20–100 nm length scale. In addition, the analysis shows the presence of indium in the AlyGa1-yN barrier layers, albeit at a very low level. By comparing with analogous epilayer samples, we suggest that the quantum well discontinuities we observe may play an important role in improving the efficiency of these structures. Abstract

Strong blue emission around 435 nm from porous silicon (PS) embedded in Pb(Zr[sub x], Ti[sub 1-x])O[sub 3] (PZT) is realized, which is stable and clearly visible to the naked eye even after exposure in an ambient atmosphere for a year. The sample is obtained by hydrothermal etching of (100)-oriented single crystal silicon wafers in an HF aqueous solution, followed by pulsed laser ablation deposition of a PZT thin layer on the surface of the PS. The electrons and holes excited from silicon nanocrystallites could be separated by the PZT-induced electrostatic field and migrate to the boundaries of PS/PZT along opposite directions, respectively. Therefore, the blue emission is interpreted in terms of the recombination of excited carriers from the silicon nanocrystallites in the interfacial region of PS/ PZT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Three-dimensional surface profiling and optical characterization of liquid microlens using a Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor.

Abstract

We demonstrate three-dimensional (3D) surface profiling of the water-oil interface in a tunable liquid microlens using a Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor. The principles and the optical setup for achieving 3D surface measurements are presented and a hydrogel-actuated liquid lens was measured at different focal lengths. The 3D surface profiles are then used to study the optical properties of the liquid lens. Our method of 3D surface profiling could foster the improvement of liquid lens design and fabrication, including surface treatment and aberration reduction.
