As LiDAR technology progressively advances, the capability of radar in detecting targets has become increasingly vital across diverse domains, including industrial, military, and automotive sectors. Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR in particular has garnered substantial interest due to its efficient direct velocity measurement and excellent anti-interference characteristics. It is widely recognized for its significant potential within radar technology. This study begins by elucidating the operational mechanism of FMCW LiDAR and delves into its basic principles. It discuss, in depth, the influence of various parameters on FMCW LiDAR’s performance and reviews the latest progress in the field. This paper proposes that future studies should focus on the synergistic optimization of key parameters to promote the miniaturization, weight reduction, cost-effectiveness, and longevity of FMCW LiDAR systems. This approach aims at the comprehensive development of FMCW LiDAR, striving for significant improvements in system performance. By optimizing these key parameters, the goal is to promote FMCW LiDAR technology, ensuring more reliable and accurate applications in automated driving and environmental sensing.

In this paper, we present a novel approach that subtly combines the transformer with grasping CNN to achieve more optimal grasps in complex real-life situations. The approach comprises two unique designs that effectively improve grasp precision in complex scenes. The first essential design uses self-attention mechanisms to capture contextual information from RGB images, boosting contrast between key object features and their surroundings. We precisely adjust internal parameters to balance accuracy and computing costs. The second crucial design involves building a feature fusion bridge that processes all one-dimensional sequence features at once to create an intuitive visual perception for the detection stage, ensuring a seamless combination of the transformer block and CNN. These designs eliminate noise features in complex backgrounds and emphasize graspable object features, providing valuable semantic data to the subsequent grasping CNN to achieve appropriate grasping. We evaluated the approach on the Cornell and VMRD datasets. According to the experimental results, our method achieves better performance than the original grasping CNN in single-object and multi-object scenarios, exhibiting 97.7% and 72.2% accuracy on the Cornell and VMRD grasp datasets using RGB, respectively.

We present a mode−locked GaSb−based optically pumped semiconductor disk laser operating at 2 µm based on the self−mode−locked mechanism. Using the delay differential equation model, we discuss the influence of cavity length on the stability of self−mode−locking and design a Z−shaped long cavity for self−mode−locking. Employing an aperture and an F−P etalon in the cavity length of ~365 mm, we obtain stable self−mode−locking at a center wavelength of 2034.5 nm, with a pulse duration of 255.48 ps and average output power of 173 mW at a repetition rate of 404 MHz.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been applied in many areas because of its excellent performance. An easily achievable, cost-effective, and high-performance ranging method is a major challenge of LiDAR. Meanwhile, with the increasing applications of LiDAR, numerous LiDARs can be made to operate simultaneously, and potential interference is inevitable. Therefore, immunity against interference is paramount in LiDAR systems. In this paper, we demonstrated a ranging method referred to as phase-modulated continuous-wave (PhMCW). A detection range of 50 m and a ranging error of 2.2 cm are achieved. A one-dimensional scanning LiDAR system that is capable of detecting targets at 28 m is built, demonstrating the validation of the PhMCW method. Moreover, we propose a quantitative method for evaluating the anti-interference capability of lidar systems. The p-values of the Ljung–Box test were 0.0589 and 0.6327 for ToF and coherent LiDAR interferences, respectively, indicating that the PhMCW system is immune to interference. The proposed method can be applied to all types of LiDAR systems, regardless of the ranging method or beam-steering technique used.

Multi-target tracking, a high-level vision job in computer vision, is crucial to understanding autonomous driving surroundings. Numerous top-notch multi-object tracking algorithms have evolved in recent years as a result of deep learning’s outstanding performance in the field of visual object tracking. There have been a number of evaluations on individual sub-problems, but none that cover the challenges, datasets, and algorithms associated with visual multi-object tracking in autonomous driving scenarios. In this research, we present an exhaustive study of algorithms in the field of visual multi-object tracking over the last ten years, based on a systematic review approach. The algorithm is broken down into three groups based on its structure: methods for tracking by detection (TBD), joint detection and tracking (JDT), and Transformer-based tracking. The research reveals that the TBD algorithm has a straightforward structure, however the correlation between its individual sub-modules is not very strong. To track multiple objects, the JDT technique combines multi-module joint learning with a deep network framework. Transformer-based algorithms have been explored over the past two years, and they have benefits in numerous assessment indicators, as well as tremendous research potential in the area of multi-object tracking. Theoretical support for algorithmic research in adjacent disciplines is provided by this paper. Additionally, the approach we discuss, which uses merely monocular cameras rather than sophisticated sensor fusion, is anticipated to pave the way for the quick creation of safe and affordable autonomous driving systems.

Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) have led to amazing results in overcoming the divergence limitation of semiconductor lasers. However, so far, the physical mechanism behind this promising control of far-field characteristics is still unclear. Here, we perform a theoretical study of the mechanism of the influence of photonic crystal (PhC) geometry on the far field of PCSELs. The perspective from group theory is adopted in our analysis. We explore the function of symmetry in the formation of the far-field pattern (FFP) and clarify the roles played by various PhC parameters in this process. Through our analysis, a symmetry criterion to design PCSELs with single-lobed narrow beams is shown, where an asymmetric in-plane PhC structure, a large vertical confinement factor, and a sufficient number of periods are required. Our results reveal the physical origin of the narrow beam of PCSELs, which can even reach 0.1° with a PhC cavity size of over 1000 μm at a lasing wavelength of 940 nm.

We experimentally demonstrate a passively Q-switched wavelength tunable 2.8 μm erbium-doped fiber laser. Fe3O4 nanoparticles deposited on a gold mirror are used as a saturable absorber (SA). Stable Q-switched pulses within the tunable range of 2710–2810 nm are obtained. At the wavelength of 2760 nm, a maximum Q-switched output power of 188 mW is achieved with a repetition rate of 115.8 kHz and a pulse width of 1.3 μs. The corresponding pulse energy is 1.68 μJ. This demonstration shows the ability of Fe3O4 to function as a broadband mid-infrared SA.

A new method to improve the brightness of diode lasers based on beam-waist splitting and polarization combining was proposed and demonstrated. The beam waist was split by a precisely cut prism into two parts and combined with a polarization beam combiner. The advantages of simple setup, high efficiency, brightness, and universality were presented. The slow axis M2 factor of a broad-area diode laser with a ridge beam width of 180 μm was reduced from 18.5 to 9.8, and a brightness of 42.4 MW cm−2 sr−1 was realized; this brightness was a 84.21% improvement of the same emitter at 8 A. The slow axis M2 factor of a commercial broad-area diode laser array combined by spectral beam combining was reduced from 9.08 to 4.78, and 80.6% improvement of brightness was realized on the same commercial broad-area diode laser array. A brightness of 195.8 MW cm−2 sr−1 was realized at 36 A by this diode laser array. This method can be applied in a highly polarized light source to improve the beam quality and brightness.

Most existing studies are based on the hydroelastic response of oversized floating bodies under regular waves, ignoring the effect of wave conditions and incident wave angle on the vibration response of oversized floating bodies in real sea conditions. In this paper, the stability performance of a single module of a mega-floating body at an offshore airport was investigated by using STAR-CCM + numerical simulations based on a specific model, with the introduction of parameters under extreme random wind and wave combined sea conditions. By comparing and analyzing the distribution characteristics of the single module floating body under the action of regular waves and irregular waves, wind, and wave load, and by considering the wave angle along the flow direction, as well as the spreading direction and vertical displacement value under the action of mooring, the overall displacement amplitude of rigid displacement, elastic deformation displacement and considering the influence of both, and the distribution law of motion response along the length of the floating body, we summarize the influence of the wave angle on the dynamic response of an oversized floating body of an offshore airport. The results show that the maximum value of the hydro-elastic response tends to appear at the head and tail of the floating body, the rigid body vertical displacement dominates the role, the amplitude of all displacements of the floating body under the action of the cross wave is larger, and the stress area along the floating body is larger when the wave angle is between 15–30°. The floating body stress value is smaller with angles of 30–65°, and the ability to bear the load is stronger. The hydroelastic response under irregular wave conditions is more sensitive to the wave direction angle, and the elastic deformation has less influence.

The stability and efficiency of a 3.5 μm erbium-doped fluoride fiber is strongly limited by the core pumping setup of a 1976 nm pump. A dual-wavelength-clad-pumped scheme was put forward for a more robust and higher electro-optical efficiency in this paper, and a numerical model was built up to stimulate the fiber. Parameter optimizations were given for both the traditional dual-wavelength pump setup and our new scheme. The results show the possibility of using a laser diode as pump source for the generation of a 3.5 μm laser, and the characteristics were analyzed.

Parasitic parameters, including electrical capacity and inductance, are the key limiting factors for bandwidth improvement of high-speed vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The traditional parasitic extraction method, which uses a first-order low-pass filter transfer function, is oversimplified, and there are large deviations between the obtained data and the actual measured data. In this paper, we proposed a modified parasitic extraction method that described the extrinsic behaviour of the high-speed oxide-confined VCSELs well and easily extracted the values of all parasitic parameters. This method can also precisely fit microwave reflection coefficient S11 data even at high frequencies and provide design guidance for high-speed VCSELs. Using this method, a high-speed 850 nm VCSEL featuring a six-layer oxide aperture with −3 dB bandwidth up to 23.3 GHz was analysed. The electrical parasitics have been systematically extracted from VCSELs with different oxide apertures. The enhanced bandwidth based on the improvement of parasitic parameters was discussed. It was found that the critical parasitic factors that affect the −3 dB bandwidth of VCSELs are pad capacitance and inductance.

The high-precision diffraction grating is an important chromatic dispersion component that has been widely used in many fields, including laser beam combining, chirped pulse compression, spectroscopy, among others. In this paper, we review the development status of reflection and transmission gratings with high diffraction efficiency and high laser-induced damage thresholds, such as metal-film and multilayer-dielectric-film gratings. Then, we review the basic principles and most recent stages in the development of manufacturing techniques, such as mechanical scribing, holographic exposure, electron-beam lithography, and nanoimprinting.

Effective balanced management of battery packs can not only increase the available capacity of a battery pack but reduce attenuation and capacity loss caused by cell inconsistencies and remove safety hazards caused by abnormal use such as overcharge and over-discharge. This research considers both the equilibration period and the battery operating current. The State of Charge (SOC), current, and equalization current of batteries are all limited. Based on the existing multi-layer equalization model, the equalization current of the equalizer was tuned with restrictions. It can equalize multiple batteries simultaneously and ensure the normal operation of the batteries. A layered control strategy was then found to solve the optimal equalization current of the equalizer layer by layer. The proposed control method reduces computation time and guarantees that the equalization approach can be employed in practice. Finally, through MATLAB simulation analysis, this technique can limit the cell current to (−3 A, 3 A), which improves the balancing efficiency by 23.55% compared with the balancing of adjacent cells.

The spontaneous emission recombination lifetime of carriers in the active region of transistor lasers (TLs) is significantly reduced due to the accelerated carrier transport in the base region under the collector bias. Thus, it has the potential for use as a high-speed optical fiber communication light source. The unique three-electrode structure of TL notably enriches the modulation methods of the light source. As an important parameter to measure the data transfer rate, the modulation bandwidth of TL has been studied extensively. This paper briefly analyzes the inherent characteristics and advantages of TL and then discusses the progress in the research on TL modulation characteristics. Currently, the common methods to increase the modulation rate include optimizing the device structure, intracavity photon-assisted tunneling, and adding external auxiliary circuits. Through these techniques, single quantum well GaAs- based TL can achieve error-free transmission of 22 Gb/s, and simulation data show that for InP- based TL, this can reach 40 Gb/s. Finally, the challenges faced by TL in the area of optical fiber communication are elucidated.

Lasers used for space communication, lidar, and laser detection in space-air-ground integration applications typically use a traditional 1550 nm band tunable distributed-feedback Bragg (DFB) semiconductor laser. This has low output power, complex fabrication process, and high fabrication cost. In this paper, we present a gain-coupled surface grating-based 1550 nm DFB semiconductor laser that can be fabricated without the use of secondary epitaxial growth techniques or high-precision lithography. The periodic electrical injection is used to achieve a gain coupling effect. A tapered waveguide is added to achieve a high output power, and the use of AlGaInAs multiple quantum wells in the active region reduces the linewidth of the laser. A continuous-wave (CW)output power of 401.5 mW is achieved at 20 °C, the maximum side mode rejection ratio exceeds 55 dB, the measured 3 dB linewidth is 18.86 MHz, and the stable single-mode output with a quasi-continuous tuning range of 6.156 nm near 1550 nm from 10 °C to 50 °C. This simple preparation method, low cost, excellent performance, and stable tunable laser have extremely high commercial value in applications such as space communication, lidar, and laser detection.

InGaAs quantum well (QW) lasers have attracted significant attention owing to their considerable potential for applications in optical communications; however, the relationship between the misorientation of the substrates used to grow InGaAs QWs and the structural and optical properties of QWs is still ambiguous. In this study, In-rich InGaAs/GaAsP single QWs were grown in the same run via metal organic chemical vapor deposition on GaAs (001) substrates misoriented by 0°, 2°, and 15° toward (111). The effects of substrate misorientation on the crystal quality and structural properties of InGaAs/GaAsP were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The 0° substrate exhibited the least lattice relaxation, and with increasing misorientation, the degree of lattice relaxation increased. The optical properties of the InGaAs/GaAsP QWs were investigated using temperature-dependent photoluminescence. An abnormal S-shaped variation of the peak energy and inverse evolution of the spectral bandwidth were observed at low temperatures for the 2° substrate, caused by the localization potentials due to the In-rich clusters. Surface morphology observations revealed that the growth mode varied with different miscuts. Based on the experimental results obtained in this study, a mechanism elucidating the effect of substrate miscuts on the structural and optical properties of QWs was proposed and verified.

Thermal ice storage has gained a lot of interest due to its ability as cold energy storage. However, low thermal conductivity and high supercooling degree have become major issues during thermal cycling. For reducing the cost and making full use of the advantages of the graphene oxide–Al2O3, this study proposes heat transfer enhancement of thermal ice storage using novel hybrid nanofluids of aqueous graphene oxide–Al2O3. Thermal conductivity of aqueous graphene oxide–Al2O3 nanofluid was measured experimentally over a range of temperatures (0–70 °C) and concentrations. Thermal conductivity of ice mixing with the hybrid nanoparticles was tested. The influences of pH, dispersant, ultrasonic power and ultrasonic time on the stability of the hybrid nanofluids were examined. A new model for the effective thermal conductivity of the hybrid nanofluids considering the structure and Brownian motion was proposed. The results showed that pH, dispersant, ultrasonic power level and ultrasonication duration are important factors affecting the stability of the hybrid nanofluids tested. The optimum conditions for stability are pH = 11, 1% SDS, 375 W ultrasonic power level and 120 min ultrasonic application time. The thermal conductivity of hybrid nanofluids increases with the increase of temperature and mass fraction of nanoparticles. A newly proposed thermal conductivity model considering the nanofluid structure and Brownian motion can predict the thermal conductivity of hybrid nanofluids reasonably well.

In this paper, a widely tunable external cavity diode laser (ECDL) with an ultra-high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) was fabricated. Three configurations were constructed to investigate the relationship between the grating features and the SMSR. When a 1200 grooves/mm grating with a first order diffraction efficiency of 91% is utilized in the external-cavity laser system, a maximum SMSR of 65 dB can be achieved. In addition, the tunable range reaches 209.9 nm. The results show that the laser performance can be improved by proper high grating groove number and first-order diffraction efficiency.

In this paper, we have demonstrated a 1.3 W green laser using a V-shaped intracavity frequency doubling 1036 nm semiconductor disk laser. The beam quality of the fundamental and second harmonic generation (SHG) laser is investigated. It has been found that the output lasers at the fundamental and SHG wavelength both suffer from reduced beam quality along with power scaling. The measured beam profile is elliptical under high power operation. In order to improve the SHG laser beam, an intracavity aperture is employed to control the mode characteristics of fundamental frequency light. By fine-tuning the aperture, a nearly circular beam profile with improving beam quality and brightness is realized.

This paper presents an optimal approach to the multi-objective synthesis of path following and rudder roll reduction for a container ship in heavy waves. An improved line of sight principle with course-keeping in track-belt is proposed to guide the ship in accordance with marine practice. Concise robust controllers for the course and roll motion based on Backstepping and closed-loop gain shaping are developed. The control parameters have obvious physical significance. The determination method is given and much effort is made to guarantee the uniform asymptotic stability of the closed-loop systems by Lyapunov synthesis. Furthermore, the multi-objective optimization method a fast and elitist multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to solve the restrictions caused by the model perturbation, external disturbance and performance trade-off. Contrasting with the existing literature, the research strategy and control performance are more in line with marine engineering practice. Simulation results illustrate the performances and effectiveness of the proposed system.
