The growing importance of traceability in supply chains requires robust, transparent, and efficient systems to ensure the integrity and authenticity of product journeys. This paper presents a comprehensive characterisation and data model for a generic blockchain-based traceability system, highlighting its implementation using smart contracts on Ethereum-compatible networks, as the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), with its pioneering implementation of smart contracts and its extensive ecosystem; it provides a robust environment for developing decentralised applications. We discuss the advantages of using blockchain technology to notarise traceability activities, ensuring immutability and transparency by exploring two main scenarios, namely one where hash keys (i.e, cryptographic digests) are stored on-chain while detailed data remain off-chain, and another where all traceability data are fully stored on-chain. Each approach is evaluated for its impact on scalability, privacy, storage efficiency, and operational costs. The hash key method offers significant advantages in reducing blockchain storage costs, enhancing privacy, and maintaining data integrity, but it depends on reliable off-chain storage. Conversely, the full on-chain approach guarantees data immutability but at a higher cost and lower scalability. By combining these strategies, a balanced solution can be achieved, leveraging the strengths of both methods to provide a reliable, efficient, and secure blockchain-based traceability system, which is illustrated with a practical implementation to support traceability in the timber sector in Galicia, Spain. This paper aims to provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners looking to implement or enhance traceability systems using blockchain technology, demonstrating how smart contracts can be effectively utilised to meet the demanding requirements of modern supply chains.

This paper investigates the potential of integrating supply chain management with blockchain technology, specifically by implementing smart contracts on the Ethereum network using Solidity. The paper explores supply chain management concepts, blockchain, distributed ledger technology, and smart contracts in the context of their integration into supply chains to increase traceability, transparency, and accountability with faster processing times. After investigating these technologies’ applications and potential use cases, a framework for smart contract implementation for supply chain management is constructed. Potential data models and functions of a smart contract implementation improving supply chain management processes are discussed. After constructing a framework, the effects of the proposed system on supply chain processes are explained. The proposed framework increases the reliability of the supply chain history due to the usage of DLT (distributed ledger technology). It utilizes smart contracts to increase the manageability and traceability of the supply chain. The proposed framework also eliminates the SPoF (Single Point of Failure) vulnerabilities and external alteration of the transactional data. However, due to the ever-changing and variable nature of the supply chains, the proposed architecture might not be a one-size-fits-all solution, and tailor-made solutions might be necessary for different supply chain management implementations.

Debt compensation is a process via which various entities (companies, people, etc.) propose the payment of their mutual debts by compensating them according to the credits they may have in their favor. The aim is to establish the financial information of a company so that its debts can somehow be satisfied by its credits, breaking the vicious cycle of debts that cannot be paid. To this end, this financial information is retrieved from the business information system of a company, encompassing how much is owed and to which companies. From the retrieved information, this paper describes the implementation of an automatic system that allows calculating not only the debt cycles involving different companies, but also how these cycles can be effectively solved using blockchain technology thanks to the use of smart contracts. Blockchain technology can have a great impact for companies in this kind of application, guaranteeing the security and traceability of transactions among companies, which are two well-appreciated features from a financial auditing point of view.

The article addresses the issue of clustering of multidimensional data arrays with a noise using the methods of discrete mathematical analysis (DMA clustering). The theory of DMA clustering through the logical densities calculus is detailed, and the new algorithm Linear Discrete Perfect Sets (LDPS) is described. The main objective of the LDPS algorithm is to identify linearly stretched anomalies in a multidimensional array of geo-spatial data (geophysical fields, geochemistry, satellite images, local topography, maps of recent crustal movements, seismic monitoring data, etc.). These types of anomalies are associated with tectonic structures in the upper part of the Earth’s crust and pose the biggest threat for integrity of the isolation properties of the geological environment, including in regions of high-level radioactive waste disposal. The main advantage of the LDPS algorithm as compared to other cluster analysis algorithms that may be used in arrays with a noise is that it is more focused on searching for clusters that are linear. The LDPS algorithm can apply not only in the analysis of spatial natural objects and fields but also to elongated lineament structures.

Bitcoin continues to get more and more attention from the media, mainly because of the volatility of its value and insignificantly associated with the technological innovation. This cryptocurrency is supported by an immutable database and is distributed throughout a network of thousands of nodes, known as Blockchain. One way to ensure that all the concepts behind the Blockchain technology and infrastructure are seized is to conduct the development of one of the most popular context applications for it: a wallet for well-known cryptocurrencies. Yet Another Bitcoin Wallet (YABW) is a hybrid application available for both Android and iOS, which was developed with the Ionic and Angular frameworks. This application communicates with Bitcoin Blockchain to send, receive and store bitcoins; provides a set of features focused on security and user experience, and is available on the Play Store and Apple Store. A rather relevant issue that is becoming a major subject of current research is the application of the Blockchain infrastructure to other contexts that are neither directly connected to cryptocurrencies, nor are finance related. The implementation of a proof-of-concept application proposes the use of a blockchain for a specific case study: the exchange of meal vouchers of an institution amongst students. This is achieved using the decentralized platform Ethereum, which allows us to create a Smart Contract using the Solidity programming language to create a token that follows the Ethereum Request for Comment (ERC), the ERC-20 standard and represents the meal vouchers. This second application uses the architecture defined for YABW, reusing major components and custom developing specific modules to enhance the required features. There is still a lot of research to be done on the non-financial applicability of the Blockchain infrastructure and technology, but for the moment, we have left further evidence that it is possible and is a relative straight-forward process to accomplish from the technological perspective.
