In this research, the design of a robust curved-line path-following control system for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (FWUAVs) affected by uncertainties on the latitude plane is studied. This is undertaken to enhance closed-loop system robustness under unknown uncertainties and derive the control surface deflection angle directly used to control FWUAVs, which has rarely been studied in previous works. The system is formed through the mass center position control (MCPC) and yaw angle control (YAC) subsystems. In the MCPC, the desired yaw angle, which is treated as the reference signal for the YAC subsystem, is calculated analytically using path-following errors, current flow angles, and the yaw angle. In the YAC, a disturbance estimator is designed to estimate uncertainties such as nonlinearities, couplings, time variations, model parameter perturbations, and unmodeled dynamics. Predictive functional controllers are designed to target nominal systems in the absence of uncertainties, such that the estimations of the uncertainties can be incorporated through feedback for closed-loop system robustness enhancement. The simulation results show that higher path-following precision and stronger robustness for the FWUAVs based on the proposed approach can be achieved using only rough model parameters compared with the conventional nonlinear dynamic inversion, which requires detailed model information. The rapid expansion of the Internet and communication technologies is leading to significant changes in both society and the economy. This development is driving the evolution of smart cities, which utilize cutting-edge technologies and data analysis to optimize efficiency and reduce waste in their infrastructure and services. As the number of mobile devices and embedded computers grows, new technologies, such as fifth-generation (5G) cellular broadband networks and the Internet of Things (IoT), are emerging to extend wireless network connectivity. These cities are often referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), highlighting their innovative approach to utilizing technology. To address the challenges posed by continuously varying perturbations, such as unknown states, gyroscopic disturbance torque, and parametric uncertainties, an adaptive recursive sliding mode control (ARSMC) has been developed. The high computational cost and high-order nonlinear behavior of UAVs make them difficult to control. The controller design is divided into two steps. First, a confined stability analysis is performed using controllability and observability to estimate the system's stability calculation. Second, a Lyapunov-based controller design analysis is systematically tackled using a recursive design procedure. The strategy design aims to enhance robustness through Lyapunov stability-based mathematical analysis in the presence of considered perturbations. The ARSMC introduces new variables that depend on state variables, controlling parameters, and stabilizing functions to minimize unwanted signals and compensate for nonlinearities in the system. This paper focuses on the design of a disturbance rejection controller for a tailless aircraft based on the technique of nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI). The tailless aircraft model mounted on a three degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) dynamic rig in the wind tunnel is modeled as a nonlinear affine system subject to mismatched disturbances. First of all, a baseline NDI attitude controller is designed for sufficient stability and good reference tracking performance of the nominal system. Then, a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is supplemented to the baseline NDI controller to estimate the lumped disturbances for compensation, including unmodeled dynamics, parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances. Mathematical analysis demonstrates the convergence of the employed NDO and the resulting closed-loop system. Furthermore, an anti-windup modification is applied to the NDO for control performance preserving in the presence of actuator saturation. Subsequently, the designed control schemes are preliminarily validated and compared via simulations. The baseline NDI controller demonstrates satisfactory attitude tracking performance in the case of nominal simulation; the NDO augmented NDI controller presents significantly improved ability of disturbance rejection when compared with the baseline NDI controller in the case of robust simulation; the anti-windup modified scheme, rather than the baseline NDI controller nor the NDO augmented NDI controller, can preserve the closed-loop performance in the case of actuator saturation. Finally, the baseline NDI scheme and the NDO augmented NDI scheme are implemented and further validated in the wind tunnel flight tests, which demonstrate that the experimental results are in good agreement with that of the simulations. This study proposes a novel, nonlinear trajectory/path-following controller based on jerk-level error dynamics. Therefore, at first the nonlinear acceleration-based kinematic equations of motion of a dynamic system are differentiated with respect to time to obtain a representation connecting the translation jerk with the (specific) force derivative. Furthermore, the path deviation, i.e., the difference between the planned and the actual path, is formulated as nonlinear error dynamics based on the jerk error. Combining the derived equations of motion with the nonlinear error dynamics as well as employing nonlinear dynamic inversion, a control law can be derived that provides force derivative commands, which may be commanded to an inner loop for trajectory control. This command ensures an increased smoothness and faster reaction time compared to traditional approaches based on a force directly. Furthermore, the nonlinear parts in the error dynamic are feedforward components that improve the general performance due to their physical connection with the real dynamics. To solve the lateral-directional control problem of the high aspect ratio full-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) without an aileron and rudder, a control method is proposed that uses the differential thrust of propellers as the control output and the yaw angle as the controlled attitude angle. Meanwhile, simulation analysis and experimental verification are carried out. First, a lateral-direction mathematical model and a differential thrust of propeller model of the full-wing drone are established. The influence of the aerodynamic derivative C Y β on the lateral-direction mode is analyzed. Second, based on nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI) and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) theories, a yaw angle controller that uses the differential thrust of propellers as the control output is designed. Finally, the vector field (VF) method is improved to obtain the straight-line trajectory tracking method satisfying different speeds, and the logic of waypoint switching is given. The research shows that C Y β has a great influence on the dutch roll damping of the drone. For the full-wing configuration, it is feasible to use the yaw angle as the controlled attitude angle without considering the roll angle. The simulation and experimental results show that the designed lateral-directional control method for the high aspect ratio full-wing UAV has a good control effect and disturbance rejection ability.
