Passive infrared (IR) systems enable rapid detection of chemical vapors but are limited by size, weight, cost, and power. Previously, the authors reported a novel passive sensor that utilizes multiple IR filter/detector combinations to discriminate between different chemical vapors based on their unique IR absorption spectra in the same manner the human eye uses to generate colors. This approach enables a very small, compact, and low-power sensor system with the capability to discriminate between chemical vapors of interest and background chemicals. All previous work showed the capability of this sensor system in discriminating chemical vapors against a hot blackbody in a laboratory environment. Now the authors demonstrate the ability of this sensor system to discriminate between the chemical vapor agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate and ethanol against the cold sky in an outdoor environment. This study introduces two novel sandwich-type tungsten–oxygen cluster compounds synthesized by hydrothermal methods, H4(C6H12N2H2)3{Na(H2O)2[Mn2(H2O)(GeW9O34)]}2 (Compound 1) and H2(C6H12N2H2)3.5{Na3(H2O)4[Co2(H2O)(GeW9O34)]2}·17H2O (Compound 2). The two compounds comprise cluster anions [GeW9O34]10– coordinated with transition metal atoms, either Mn or Co, and are stabilized by organic ligands. These compounds are crystallized in the hexagonal crystal system and P63/m space group. The two compounds were characterized through various techniques. Fourier transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy showed absorption peaks of anionic backbone vibrations of the Keggin cluster at 500–1000 cm–1, IR spectral peaks of δ(N–H) and νas(C–N) of the ligand triethylenediamine at 1000–2000 cm–1, and IR spectral peaks of the ligand νas(N–H) and νas(O–H) of water at 3000–3500 cm–1. Despite similar one-dimensional (1D) IR spectra due to the same cluster anions and similar molecular structures, the two compounds exhibited distinct responses in two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy with IR under magnetic and thermal perturbations. Under magnetic perturbation, Compound 1 showed a strong response peak for νas(W–Ob–W), while Compound 2 exhibited a strong response peak for νas(W=Od), possibly linked to differing magnetic particles. Similarly, Compound 1 displayed a strong response peak under thermal perturbation for νas(W–Oc–W). In contrast, Compound 2 showed a strong response peak for νas(W=Od); these results may be attributed to the different hydrogen bonding connections between the two compounds, which affect the groups in distinct ways through vibration and transmit these vibrations to the W–O bonds. We have demonstrated high-speed, super-resolution infrared (IR) spectroscopy and chemical imaging of autofluorescent biomaterials and organisms using camera-based widefield photothermal detection that takes advantage of temperature-dependent modulations of autofluorescent emission. A variety of biological materials and photosynthetic organisms exhibit strong autofluorescence emission under ultraviolet excitation and the autofluorescent emission has a very strong temperature dependence, of order 1%/K. Illuminating a sample with pulses of IR light from a wavelength-tunable laser source causes periodic localized sample temperature increases that result in a corresponding transient decrease in autofluorescent emission. A low-cost light-emitting diode-based fluorescence excitation source was used in combination with a conventional fluorescence microscopy camera to detect localized variations in autofluorescent emission over a wide area as an indicator of localized IR absorption. IR absorption image stacks were acquired over a range of IR wavelengths, including the fingerprint spectral range, enabling extraction of localized IR absorption spectra. We have applied widefield fluorescence detected photothermal IR (FL-PTIR) to an analysis of autofluorescent biological materials including collagen, leaf tissue, and photosynthetic organisms including diatoms and green microalgae cells. We have also demonstrated the FL-PTIR on live microalgae in water, demonstrating the potential for label-free dynamic chemical imaging of autofluorescent cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many baseline correction approaches have been developed to address baseline artifacts observed in measured infrared (IR) absorption spectra during post-processing. These approaches offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which one to employ depends on the complexity of baseline artifacts present in a particular application. In this paper, we compare the performance of two baseline correction approaches: a frequency-domain polynomial fitting approach and a time-domain modified free induction decay approach, under various baseline scenarios, spectral resolutions, and noise levels for mixtures containing up to 464 species. Our results showed that the frequency-domain approach outperformed the time-domain approach by a factor of up to 16 when the baseline was represented by a sine wave with fewer than two cycles over the full spectral range. On the other hand, the time-domain approach performed up to 12 times better when the baseline featured two cycles of a sine wave. Additionally, we observed that the time-domain approach exhibited higher sensitivity to spectral resolution and underperformed when the noise level was high. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of numerically testing a few candidate approaches for a given application, taking into consideration baseline characteristics, as well as the spectral resolution and noise constraints of the application. Injection-molded polyoxymethylene (POM) has molecular chains mainly oriented in the injection direction. We investigated the directional dependence of the polarized infrared reflection and attenuated total reflection spectra by rotating the anisotropic POM sample. Because of the strong absorption and large frequency dispersion of the C–O vibration in the main-chain direction, we found phenomena such as shoulder wing generation that resulted from the mixing of optical responses attributed to the vibration in the main chain and that in the direction perpendicular to the main chain. The spectra of the directional dependence can be explained qualitatively because of the anisotropy of the mode with large frequency dispersion. A method for measuring the optical functions of a flat sample made of homogeneous and isotropic material, using attenuated total reflection spectroscopy when there is poor contact between the sample and the internal reflection element is presented. The approach consists in treating the spacing between the internal reflection element and the sample as an adjustable parameter, along with the dispersion model parameters, in the simultaneous fitting of s - and p -polarized spectra obtained when the gap distance is unknown. The method is tested with both synthetic and experimental (polystyrene) spectra. The results demonstrate the method's ability to accurately determine the optical functions even in the presence of a contact problem. Based on hybrid 2D correlation analysis, we recently derived and introduced a "smart error sum," a sophisticated loss function that can be used for solving nonlinear inverse problems like the determination of optical constants and oscillator parameters from a series of optical spectra in the infrared spectral region. The advantage of the smart error sum compared to the conventional sum of squared errors lies in its ability to marginalize multiplicative systematic errors such as, for example, reflectance values above unity in transflection spectra. This is enabled by a transformation, which allows fits to not exclusively focus on forcing fit spectra to agree with experimental spectra at every wavenumber point by all means, but also to take correlations such as spectral similarities and their changes with certain perturbations into account. In this work, we extend our approach to accommodate the treatment of individual spectra, instead of only series, based on hybrid two-trace two-dimensional (2T2D) correlation analysis. We evaluate and prove the value of our approach by individually analyzing experimental transflection spectra of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) layers on gold substrates. The comparison of the results with those obtained by the original smart error sum based on the whole set of spectra as well as those resulting from conventional fitting of series and individual spectra (using the conventional sum of squared errors) confirms the validity and soundness of the 2T2D smart error sum. Acute leukemia, a highly perilous cancer, is diagnosed using invasive procedures like bone marrow aspirate and biopsy (BMA/BMB). This study investigated the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy as a non-invasive, reagent-free diagnostic alternative with high sensitivity and specificity. The spectral peak patterns of peripheral blood smears (PBS) from clinically healthy individuals (n = 50) BMA/BMB-confirmed acute leukemia patients (n = 50) were examined in the 1800-850 cm–1 range. Six trained models were used to assess the diagnostic performance, focusing on accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), F1 score, and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The study shows significantly lower absorbance peaks in leukemia cases compared to healthy controls across various spectral regions: 1637.82, 1528.63, 1448.29, and 1388.54 cm–1, 1302.02, and 1240.21 cm–1, and 1163.99 cm–1. These differences indicate decreased concentrations or distinct molecular configurations of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates in cases. Conversely, they exhibited elevated absorbance peaks at 1032.14 and 894.11 cm–1 regions, suggesting potential disparities in amino acid, DNA, fatty acid, and saccharide residues compared to healthy controls. Of the six trained models, the SVM model demonstrated remarkable diagnostic performance, achieving an accuracy of 83%, a PPV of 80%, an NPV of 86%, an F1 score of 82.47%, and an AUC of 90.76%. This study demonstrates the potential of AI-enhanced FT-IR spectroscopy as a valuable adjunct diagnostic tool for acute leukemia. Attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is used to characterize a vast array of materials at the molecular level in various industry types. Here we compare the performance of a portable spectrometer with a novel three-bounce–two-pass (3B2P) ATR scanning interface to the same device with a standard one-bounce (1B) ATR, and to a benchtop spectrometer with a 10-bounce (10B) ATR, in ideal sample–interface conditions and an applied dermatological study setting. In both application settings, the benchtop 10B ATR interface showed the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), however, the novel 3B2P produced a six-fold increase in the sensitivity of the portable spectrometer when analyzing isopropanol and showed the greatest consistency of SNR of all devices when analyzing isopropanol and in vivo skin samples. Spectral data were sourced from a recently undertaken dermatological study involving a cohort of 180 healthy, full-term babies, using both 1B and 3B2P interfaces. Use of the 3B2P interface resulted in a 55% greater successful high-quality spectrum collection rate, compared to the 1B, and showed significantly superior SNR at both observed study time points, i.e., birth (1B: 68.37; 3B2P: 77.37), and at four weeks (1B: 74.53; 3B2P: 80.22). The utility of ATR FT-IR spectrometers as a dermatological clinical tool was also exemplified here, by quantifying the moisture level of newborn skin. The heat treatment of an injection-molded polyoxymethylene slightly below the melting point and subsequent isothermal treatment at 130 °C were performed. The polyoxymethylene structure was examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and polarization infrared reflection measurements. After the heat treatment, a significant change in the surface morphology was observed, and the reflection spectrum derived from the polariton in the injection direction also changed dramatically. Since the reflection spectrum in the injection direction contains the reflection component of the perpendicular direction and vice versa, the polarization spectra of both directions can be calculated consistently. The mixing ratio of each crossed component and the pure relative permittivity both parallel and perpendicular to the main-chain direction were determined using the oscillator model. The heat treatment reduced the ratio of the perpendicular component and increased the order structure until just before melting. We document an artifact associated with the back reflection from samples or sampling accessories in Fourier transform spectrometers. Samples oriented normal to the incoming modulated beam can reflect light back to the interferometer and this light (the percentage dependent on the sample's refractive index) is modulated by the interferometer a second time resulting in light erroneously appearing at twice its true frequency. The phenomenon occurs across the spectrum but is most apparent when positive-going narrow absorption peaks at 1 f display as negative-going peaks at 2 f. We have redressed the artifact by implementing a rotation stage directly beneath the sample holder: As the stage is rotated through small angles relative to beam normal, the back-reflected light does not enter the interferometer and the artifact disappears. An innovative mid-infrared spectroscopic sensor system based on quantum cascade lasers has been developed. The system combines the versatility of substrate-integrated hollow waveguides (IHWGs) with the robustness of attenuated total reflection (ATR) crystals employed as internal reflection waveguides for evanescent field sensing. IHWGs are highly reflective metal structures that propagate infrared (IR) radiation and were used as light pipes for coupling radiation into the ATR waveguide. The combined IHWG-ATR device has been designed such that the utmost stability and robustness of the optical alignment were ensured. This novel assembly enables evanescent field absorption measurements at yet unprecedently harsh conditions, that is, high pressure and temperature. Combining these advantages, this innovative sensor assembly is perfectly suited for taking ATR spectroscopy into the field where the robustness of the assembly and optical alignment is essential. In this technical note, we present an advanced thermospectroscopic imager based on a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer and a thermal camera. This new instrument can image both thermal emission and multispectral absorbance fields in a few seconds at a resolution of 4 cm−1 or less. The setup is made of a commercial FT-IR spectrometer (ThermoFisher Nicolet iS50R) synchronized to an IR camera (indium antimonide and strained layer superlattice) as a detector to record the interferograms in each pixel of the images. A fast Fourier transform algorithm with apodization and Mertz phase correction is applied to the images, and the background is rationed to process the interferograms into the absorbance spectra in each pixel. The setup and image processing are validated using thin polystyrene films; during this processing, more than 1750 spectra per second are recorded. A spectral resolution equivalent to that of commercial FT-IR spectrometers is obtained for absorbance peaks valued less than two. The transient capability of the FT-IR thermospectroscopic imager is illustrated by measuring the heterogeneous thermal and absorbance fields during the phase change of paraffin over a few minutes. The complete mechanism of the thermochemical processes during a polymer solidification is revealed through the thermospectroscopic images, demonstrating the usefulness of such an instrument in studying fast transient thermal and chemical phenomena with an improved spectral resolution. This paper presents the results of study of titanium–magnesium catalysts often used in polymerization processes, by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) in combination with diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The interaction of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) with MgCl2 was studied at DBPadded/Mg = 0–1 (mol/mol). The luminescence spectra with excitation at 278 nm and the excitation spectra for main emission bands were recorded. It was shown that DBP adsorbed on magnesium chloride, both in the form of donor–acceptor complexes (D+A–) and in the form of molecular complexes. At DBPadded/Mg <0.15, the formation of D+A– complexes occur predominantly; with an increase in DBPadded/Mg, the fraction of molecular complexes increases. Molecular complexes are destroyed during the treatment of the support by TiCl4. In this case, the structure of magnesium chloride is disordered and new coordination–unsaturated sites are formed. This work is a first attempt to apply PL spectroscopy in combination with DRIFTS spectroscopy to study titanium–magnesium Ziegler–Natta catalysts. The application of PL spectroscopy to such systems made it possible to detect interactions within and between donor molecules, which would be particularly challenging to achieve using other spectroscopic methods. Both spectroscopic methods provided crucial information about the existence of two types of complexes on the sample surface which is important for tuning the synthesis procedure of the titanium–magnesium catalysts for olefin polymerization. The comparison of the characteristics of the infrared (IR) spectra of saliva of healthy volunteers was carried out based on gender and age. It is shown that statistically significant differences between male and female groups are observed for the absorption bands of proteins and lipids. At the same time, the absorbance of the bands assigned to proteins and nucleic acids is higher for males, whereas the absorbance of the bands assigned to lipids is higher in the group of females. It is established that the correlation relationships of the characteristics of the spectra and age are weakly expressed. Thus, when forming the criteria of the norm and pathology for saliva, it is necessary to take into account the gender of the subjects, while there are no strict requirements for taking into account age periodization. Nevertheless, the revealed patterns are valid only for the composition of the saliva of healthy volunteers, the extension of the results to groups of patients with various diseases, as well as other biological fluids, requires additional testing. We report updated infrared (IR) absorption measurements on vapor-deposited cryogenic parahydrogen (pH2) solids that indicate a ≈10% systematic error in our previous approach for determining a pH2 solid's thickness (S. Tam and M.E. Fajardo. Appl. Spectrosc. 2001. 55(12): 1634-1644). We provide corrected values for the integrated absorption intensities of the Q1(0)+S0(0) and S1(0)+S0(0) bands calculated over the 4495–4520 cm−1 and 4825–4855 cm−1 regions, respectively. New polarized IR absorption spectroscopy data demonstrate the insensitivity to polarization effects of the peak intensity of the QR(0) phonon sideband near 4228 cm−1. Methacrylated hyaluronic acid (MeHA) has been used extensively in tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. The degree of methacrylation (DM) of HA impacts hydrogel crosslinking, which is of pivotal importance for cell interactions. The methacrylation reaction occurs over several hours, and DM is currently assessed post reaction and after dialysis of the solution, using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) data. Thus, there is little control over exact DM in a specific reaction. Here, infrared (IR) spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection (ATR) mode was investigated as an alternate modality for assessment of the DM of HA hydrogels, including during the reaction progression. Attenuated total reflection is a low-cost technique that is widely available in research and industry labs that can be used online during the reaction process. Strong correlations were achieved with IR-derived peak heights from dialyzed and lyophilized samples at 1708 cm−1 (from the methacrylic ester carbonyl vibration), and 1H NMR values (R = 0.92, P = 6.56E-11). Additional IR peaks of importance were identified using principal component analysis and resulted in significant correlations with the 1H NMR DM parameter: 1454 cm−1 (R = 0.85, P = 2.81E-8), 1300 cm−1 (R = 0.95, P = 4.50E-14), 950 (R = 0.85, P = 3.55E-8), 856 cm−1 (R = 0.94, P = 1.20E-12), and 809 cm−1 (R = 0.93, P = 3.54E-12). A multiple linear regression model to predict 1H NMR-derived DM using the 1708, 1300, and 1200 cm−1 peak heights as independent variables resulted in prediction with an error of 3.2% using dialyzed and lyophilized samples (P < 0.001). Additionally, a multilinear regression model to predict the DM in undialyzed liquid MeHA samples obtained during the reaction process using similar peak height positions as independent variables resulted in a prediction error of 0.81% (P < 0.05). Thus, IR spectroscopy can be utilized as an alternate modality to 1H NMR for quantification of the DM of MeHA while sampling either on-line during the methacrylation reaction as well as in post-lyophilized products. Sol-gels are found in many different scientific fields and have very broad applications. They are often prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes such as trimethoxysilanes, which are commonly used as precursors in the preparation of silsequioxanes via the sol-gel process. The reaction rates of such reactions are influenced by a wide range of experimental factors such as temperature, pH, catalyst, etc. In this study, we combined multiple in situ spectroscopic techniques to monitor the hydrolysis and partial condensation reactions of methyltrimethoxysilane and phenyltrimethoxysilane. A rich set of kinetics information on intermediate species of the hydrolysis reactions were obtained and used for kinetics modeling. Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provided the most information about hydrolysis and NMR provided the most information about condensation. A quantitative method based on Raman spectra to quantify the various transient intermediate hydrolysis products was developed using NMR as the primary method, which can be deployed in the field where it is impractical to carry out NMR measurements. With the availability of easy-to-use commercial instrumentation for infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, the number of users is growing very fast. Even in labs in which no personnel with experience in spectroscopy is around, spectra can be recorded and analyzed. However, for an inexperienced person it is virtually impossible to check whether a spectrum is plausible. In this Note, it is demonstrated that even comparing an experimental spectrum with data from a database may lead to significant errors. Raw materials need to be of a certain quality with respect to physical and chemical composition. They also need to have no contaminants, including particles, because these could indicate raw material impurities or contaminate the product. Particle identification allows determination of process conditions that caused them and whether the quality of the final product is acceptable. Particles may appear to the eye to be very different things than they actually are. They may be coated with the raw material and may consist of several components; therefore, chemical and elemental analyses are required for accuracy in proper identification and definitive information about their source. Thus, microscope versions of Raman spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy are excellent tools for identifying particles in materials. Those tools are fast and accurate, and can provide chemical and elemental composition as well as images that can aid identification. The micro-analysis capabilities allow for easy analysis of different portions of samples so that multiple components can be identified and sample preparation can be reduced or eliminated. The differences in sensitivities of Raman and IR spectroscopies to different functional groups as well as the elemental analysis provided by LIBS and the image analysis provided by the microscopy makes these complementary techniques and provides the advantage of identifying various chemical components. A two-step synthesis of polyimide reaction from dianhydride and diamine was followed by both infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy in situ in this case study. In the first step, the two reactants form poly(amide acid), which resulted in substantial spectral changes easily detected by both spectroscopic techniques. The reaction was found to occur rapidly and reached completion within tens of minutes at room temperature. In the second step, trimethylamine (catalyst) and acetic anhydride (dehydration agent) were added to form the five-member imide ring. Interestingly, different spectral changes were observed using IR and Raman spectroscopic methods due to their different responses toward the various functional groups involved. Conclusive evidence was also obtained based on the Raman results to demonstrate a long-lived intermediate species, which was harder to observe in the IR results. A spectral processing method was developed and tested for analyzing temperature-dependent attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectra of aliphatic polyesters. Spectra of a bio-based, biodegradable polymer, 3.9 mol% 3HHx poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate] (PHBHx), were analyzed and corrected prior to analysis using two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS). Removal of the temperature variation of diamond absorbance, correction of the baseline, ATR correction, and appropriate normalization were key to generating more reliable data. Both the processing steps and order were important. A comparison to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicated that the normalization method should be chosen with caution to avoid unintentional trends and distortions of the crystalline sensitive bands. Saliva provides a valuable tool for assessing oral and systemic diseases, but concentrations of salivary components are very small, calling the need for precise analysis methods. In this work, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy using transmission and photoacoustic (PA) modes were compared for quantitative analysis of saliva. The performance of these techniques was compared with a calibration series. The linearity of spectrum output was verified by using albumin- thiocyanate (SCN-) solution at different SCN- concentrations. Saliva samples used as a comparison were obtained from healthy subjects. Saliva droplets of 15 μL were applied on the silicon sample substrate, 6 drops for each specimen, and dried at 37 °C overnight. The measurements were carried out using an FT-IR spectrometer in conjunction with an accessory unit for PA measurements. The findings with both transmission and PA modes mirror each other. The major bands presented were 1500-1750 cm-1 for proteins and 1050-1200 cm-1 for carbohydrates. In addition, the distinct spectral band at 2050 cm-1 derives from SCN- anions, which is converted by salivary peroxidases to hypothiocyanate (OSCN-). The correlation between the spectroscopic data with SCN- concentration (r>0.990 for transmission and r = 0.967 for PA mode) was found to be significant (P<0.01), thus promising to be utilized in future applications. In this study, monoatomic and thus IR-inactive ions were determined via infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) spectroscopy including Cl-, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Br-, next to the IR-active ion SO42-. The determination of IRinactive ions is enabled, as each ion influences the infrared spectrum of bulk water by organizing the water molecules within the solvation shell around the ionic species in a unique way. Furthermore, the influence of temperature was taken into account for the potential application of this analytical technique in real-world scenarios. Using chemometric data analysis, seven ions could be discriminated at temperatures ranging between 3°C and 45°C. Finally, within a sample of seawater, Cl-, Na+, Mg2+ and SO42- could be simultaneously quantified, while the concentrations of Ca2þ, Kþ and Br remained below the achievable limits of detection.
