•AMX detection by HPLC with fluorescence is quite sensitive, accurate, and precise.•We recommend a 5-day withdrawal period after AMX administration in Japanese eels.•AMX pharmacokinetics in Japanese eels could help design rational dosing regimens.•The information could help government to formulate laws and regulations for AMX.
