The First Church of Christ Scientist in Richmond, United Kingdom, has been altered by David Chipperfield Architects so that the emphasis is now placed on the congregation rather than the building itself. The main auditorium has been changed so that it offered a smaller and more intimate setting for Christian worship, and a new reading room has been added to the side of the reduced auditorium. The architects decided to keep the entrance to the building formal, although it has been improved to include better lighting in the foyer.

David Chipperfield Architects have worked on a variety of projects in the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan since the office became established in 1985. Examples include an office building in Dusseldorf, Germany and The River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom. The office has recently completed a shop refit for Katharine Hamnett in London which only took three weeks to build and offers maximum views in to the shop.

The architectural design for the Citizens Advice Bureau in Chessington is a modern construction which is made up of several square blocked rooms with glazed and framed walls. It caters for disabled and able-bodied people and has includes heating, lighting and security technological innovations. Its appropriateness is questionable in terms of its usage, because the staff of the centre are unlikely to be able to manage the new technology.

Buschow Henley has completed three architectural designs involving working environments which will characterise its work and form a standard for future projects. The Media strategist offices use space in a highly original and innovative manner. The company has analysed the working environment in terms of design, and in doing so changed the traditional division of labour approach to group people in logical groupings.

Avanti Architects' restoration of the Modern Movement building, the White House, near Haslemere, England, has been completed. The house was designed by Amyas Connell and built in 1932. The cubic house had begun to deteriorate, with crumbling concrete walls and corrosion of the staircase enclosure. After consultation with English Heritage, restoration work began in January 1993. The unique design of the house has been respected, although modern technology has been incorporated to ensure that it remains a comfortable family home.

Architects and concrete manufacturers must work together to produce more colourful concrete facades for modern buildings and move away from the traditional plain, white or grey concrete structures which do little for the imagination. Several famous architects have experimented with coloured concrete, although there work is often poorly received by the architectural community.

The choice of Renzo Piano as chief architect of the London Bridge tower, a 390m skyscraper, is discussed. The designs for the skyscraper, which allude to ships' masts and spires, have been approved by London mayor Livingstone.

The first part of the refurbishment project at Beacon House in Victoria London has been completed by Bramante Architects for their client the Look Ahead Housing Association. Television rooms, a surgery, toilets and a reading room are now available for the hostel for the homeless which will be used by residents who have mental and health problems. Plywood benches have been fitted into rooms lined with beech-plywood panels, to use space in the most efficient manner.
