The innovative work of British-born architect Duncan Lewis is discussed. Examples of his striking projects in France and Norway, which makes strong use of landscape, plants, vegetal forms and motifs, are described.

Cambridge Regional College site has been transformed into an attractive campus, in three phases. The first phase was commissioned from Powell Moya Partnership in 1989, and was funded, along with phase 2 by central government. Phase 3 was commissioned in 1995 and undertaken by the practice of Bernard Stilwell Architects. The majority of rooms phase 3 are classrooms, with some studios, photographic darkrooms and a computer suite, using the same materials as the previous phases.

The University of Salford's Centenary Building is a visually stunning building which won the 1996 Stirling Prize, but reaction from students is mixed. The Centenary Building, designed by Stephen Hodder, is a tough, easily-maintained building which meets its brief of being a 'statement building' with a strong image. The building demonstrates the concept of disciplined romanticism, and is both functional and also an extension of the city street. However, some users feel it is too colourless and fails to meet their specific needs.

The construction of the second phase of the Sunderland University buildings, Sunderland, England, cost some 18 million pounds sterling and consists of two new buildings, a resources centre and a computer school. It has been designed by Building Design Partnership with the intention it should be integrated into phase I of the building which was completed in 1995. The new buildings, which were completed in Aug 1996, will cater for 1800 students and incorporates a parking area for 224 cars. The new areas combine more formal teaching rooms with an open area where 500 computers are stationed.

RMJM, architects, designed the new University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, from a brief calling for academic, staff and technical accommodation for 1,500 students. The building had to be flexible to meet changing needs and required a strong visual identity. It is built as a series of modules with vertical cores and stairs at perimeter edges. An internal street and high level bridges link the modules together. The construction comprised precast concrete.

Sir Norman Foster and Partners were selected as architects for the new Faculty of Law building at the University of Cambridge. The North facade of the building uses curved structural silicon glazing, progressing into a stainless steel roof. Internally there are coluumn free spaces and the building is designed to be energy efficient using the thermal mass of the exposed internal concrete structure.

A new building at the University of East Anglia was designed by architect John Miller & Partners, to house lecture and seminar facilities, offices and serviced dining rooms. The building features a shallow curved projecting entrance bay forming an oval shaped element which is also expressed internally. The approach to the low energy brief concentrates on low pressure drop mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and opening windows. A Swedish system was used to make better use of the available storage mass. A cost summary is listed and working details of the glazed canopy is described.

Wilson Court, designed by architect Van Heynigngen and Haward, is part of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, England, and comprises accommodation, conference and teaching facilities for graduates entering the surveying profession. An appraisal of the 1.90 million pounds sterling building by the client, architect, structural engineer and acoustic engineer is presented, plus a cost comment and an overview of working details.

Building Design Partnership (BDP), Shepherd Design and Build and Bond Bryan Partnership worked together to design new facilities for Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, England. The university is being moved from five sites to two main city centre campuses, with the architects responsible for developing a central atrium, new main entrance, pedestrian concourse and academic accommodation. The project cost 26 million pounds sterling. The design of the new facilities is examined in detail from several personal viewpoints.

Teesside Development Corp commissioned a new university college at Stockton as part of a business park in 1991. The architect was Halliday Meecham. The first phase was completed in less than a year. It was built to meet the demands for higher education in Teesside. Accounts of the building are included from the occupier, the civil engineer and the user. A cost analysis, outline specification and working details are given.

The campus of Cheltenham Art College has been extended by Edward Cullinan Architects to include new departments of fashion, video, graphics and photography together with new residential and teaching accommmodation. The original building was constructed in the 1960s. Different materials have been used which meet and overlap for protection. The bay windows have frameless 6mm toughened glass panels. The bays are built of plywood and timber studwork with cold face insulation. A stud partition wall internally divides the south elevation's projecting bays. The design of the extension is described.

Chaucer College at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, is a residential base for Japanese students, and its design contains elements of traditional Japanese architecture, for example the concave pitched roofs with overhanging gables and eaves. The college has three- and two-storey residential blocks, while classrooms, dining hall, common room, lecture theatre and library form a courtyard. Technical details of the college's design are detailed.

The architecture of the Free University in Berlin, the first building in Germany after the Second World War to use industrialized processes, is examined. Some of the features of the building include a Cor-ten steel external finish and the entire structure was based on prefabrication and flexibility, in order to help make quick changes in the departmental layout.

The Keyworth Centre building, part of the London Southbank University, is a high profile university teaching building that is drawn on its in-house ability to integrate architecture, environment and structure. The detailed plans and working drawings of the structure is discussed.

The architecture of Studio Gang at the campus of Rock Valley College in Illinois is discussed. In summertime, the college runs the popular outdoor Starlight Theatre, but since summers are no more reliable in Illinois than in the UK, and the theater wanted a roof of some kind, but with an open-air quality.

The architectural features of the latest extension to the University of Durham funded by the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) ruler Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qassimi are presented. The building has a variety of timber-framed facade design within a steel frame, which provides the desired subtle curves of the main elevations and roofline.

Il Magistero--the School of Education (Urbino, Italy) was designed by architect Giancarlo De Carlo, and was set up at Urbino University from 1968-76. Although he is presently 83 years old, De Carlo remains involved in various architectural projects including educational projects. De Carlo's efforts at Il Magistero are examined.

Architect Berman Guedes Stretton is involved in a number of projects involving the construction of university research facilities and buildings for the science industry. According to Bruce Cockburn, the firm's associate director, scientists can benefit from an environment where casual encounters are encouraged and the building reflects the scientists' values. The firm is currently working at the University of Oxford, where a laboratory is scheduled to be completed by 2004.

The new learning resource centre at Thames Valley University was designed by Richard Rogers Partnership and features a solid three storey linear concrete frame, with a shorter metal barrel vault running parallel. Each of the arched beams had to be site welded as they were tool large to be transported by road. Glass was used for the stair treads and the first floor level bridge. Raised flooring was used throughout, due to the need for large amounts of cabling.

The rooftop extension to the Oxford Brookes University will cost 580,000 pounds sterling and will be funded partly by the department of architecture, partly by the university with the remainder from fundraising. The new bulding will be used as part of building research monitoring certain conditions. The structure of the extension will be aluminium extrusions in a grid forming an arch. The spherical roof will feature a mix of glazed and solid panels.

A column discusses how architecture becomes uninteresting and limited as prediction and reduction of materials becomes more prevalent in projects. While working on the new Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, the author encountered limited materials to work with due to high import taxes and subsequently felt a constraint on the creative process.

The University of Cambridge has launched a masterplan for its West Cambridge site, with the aim of creating opportunities for scientific advancement. The plans would provide new areas for academic use, along with residential units. However the plan is confined by remit limitations and there is concern as to how the continuity can be achieved to foster the development of appropriate, adaptable systems of building.

The design of the lecture theatres at the new National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, presented a particular environmental challenge since they are designed for internal temperatures of up to 28.2 deg C in mid-summer. In order to reduce the temperature and at the same time provide soundproofing and light-tightness, ventilation of the interior had to be separated from the building fabric's ventilation. The solution of international consortium Mwamuka DM-TM is to build a diaphragm wall made up of two brickwork skins with a ventilated cavity in between.
