In this paper, I revise readings in published papyri from the archive of Dioscorus from Aphrodite. The corrections proposed include all types of changes, as well as new readings of unedited text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

P.Lund I 4, first published in 1935, contains lines from an unknown comedy, doubtfully attributed to Menander in the ed.pr.; P. Carlsb. inv. 50, published in 1977, preserves verses from a comedy possibly by Menander or Apollodorus of Carystus. According to my re-examination, the two fragments belong to the same bookroll. In this paper I will discuss this joint, together with a new reconstruction of the comedy scene preserved by P.Lund I 4 and some new readings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents editions of two small fragments of Christian papyri from the collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford: Bodl. MS. Gr. th. g. 5 (P) and Bodl. MS. Gr. th. f. 16 (P). P.Freib. IV 47 (two separate fragments) preserves a narrative text that is too fragmentary to allow the reconstruction of a plot. In the present paper, we suggest improvements to the text and collect parallels which reinforce the current view that it comes from a lost novel; we also address the possibility that this novel could have a Christian theme. This paper examines SB XX 15071 and P.Mich. III 146, two papyri containing tables of divisions, which have been edited separately but turn out to belong to the same roll. The article offers a new edition of the rejoined pieces, a thorough discussion of various aspects related to the roll, such as provenance and chronology, handwriting, presence of variants of result, purpose of the tables. P.Ant. III 128, a fragment from a medical compilation, is identified in the present paper to contain a passage from the treatise 'On Therapeutic Aids' by Antyllus (2nd century A.D.). In the papyrus, the author's indication is apparently given in the form of a running title. Therefore, the phenomenon of running titles in papyri and manuscripts is discussed. The study concludes with an overview on ancient treatises entitled 'On Therapeutic Aids', along with a reconstruction of the table of contents of Antyllus' lost work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a re-edition of P.Oxy. XII 1466. Whereas previous editors recognised remains of another document on the verso, the whole piece appears to be a copy of a petition for a tutor mulieris addressed to the prefect of Egypt. It is drawn up in the form of a diploma, written transversa charta, with remains of three witnesses' signatures on the verso at 90° to the text of the recto. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is divided into two parts: the first presents all the papyrological and bibliological observations necessary for a new edition of P.Here. 1428 (= LDAB 3563; TM 62400) which comes from the large Herculanean roll that contains Philodemus' treatise On Piety. The second part provides a new critical reconstruction, along with translation and notes, of the 'pre-Socratic section' of P.Here. 1428, in which Philodemus, via his harsh polemics against previous theological thought, critically lays out the Presocratic opinions on the gods, from Thales to the Sophists. This paper provides an edition of P.Berol. Inv. 10536 (= BKT X 14 = LDAB 154370; MP3 2574.01) grounded on a new autopsy of the original manuscript. Even if the editio princeps is not entirely overturned, but only improved in some passages, further elements seem to stand out, which lead not only to the impression of an Epicurean context, but also to other interpretations. This paper offers a new overview of P.Lond. Lit. 112, long considered to be a possible fragment of the lost collection of ethnographical material known as Νόμιμα βαρβαρικά that originated with Aristotle. A new arrangement of the fragments, a re-edition of the text and an updated commentary suggests that the piece, rather than being Aristotelian, could be a fragment of the lost paradoxographic collection of ethnographic anecdotes compiled by Nymphodorus of Amphipolis. This paper provides a complete collection of the papyrological sources concerning the Milesians. Apart from some texts which do not appear in the Corpus dei Papiri Filosofici Greci e Latini (CPF), this collection also takes into account some Herculanean testimonia to Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes which have been forgotten in both the old and most recent editions of these pre-Socratic philosophers. P.Oxy. LXVIII 5156, a second century witness to Plutarch's Quaestiones Convivales, reads τηρε[ῖ instead of the mediaeval manuscripts' ποιεῖ at 660 c 7. The passage suggests a parallel between the effect of conversation on wine drinking and that of marble on heated iron during a puzzling metallurgical process. In this paper we identify and explain this process in the context of ancient ironworking technology, and discuss the two readings and their implications for the understanding of the simile. P.Berol. 21312 and P.Schubart 27 (P.Berol. 16086), as pointed out by Odette Bouquiaux-Simon in 1992, are part of the same sheet containing a Gnomic Anthology dating to the II/III century A.D. (LDAB 4984). This paper shows that the four fragments of P.Berol. 21312 actually join with P.Schubart 27 and it also supplies a new transcription of the text, combined with the papyrological apparatus. This paper deals with a notorious interpretive crux of Alcman's Louvre-Partheneion: the identity of the Πεληάδες and the meaning and function of the φᾶρος. O.BYU Mag., a Coptic love spell written continuously over three successive ostraca, consists largely of a narrative in which Horus asks for the help of his mother Isis to win the love of a woman whom he meets in the underworld. It is one of twenty-two known Coptic magical texts that mention Egyptian or Greek deities, and its narrative is paralleled almost exactly in three of these. Dating to the seventh or eighth century CE, it provides important evidence regarding the knowledge and survival of Egyptian deities at a time when Egypt was thoroughly Christian. This paper analyses some recurring physical features, such as wormholes on the surface, in a fragmentary papyrus from Oxyrhynchus, P.Oxy. IX 1175 + XVII 2081(b), which partially preserves a lost tragedy by Sophocles, Eurypylus (frr. 206-222 R.2). Beinecke papyrus P.CtYBR inv. 5018 consists of a series of well-defined entries, each with three elements: (1) an ordinal number (surviving are '10th' through '15th'); (2) the lemma, no more than a phrase, apparently excerpted from an unknown prose text; (3) literary examples or verbatim quotations, presumably intended to illustrate the content of the lemma. Quoted are a passage from Odyssey 11 and two trimeter lines from an unknown tragedy or tragedies. The contents of the prose text from which the lemmata derive is not clear, but appears to regard poetics or poetic composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides the first complete catalogue of the evidence for pre- Socratic philosophers handed down by the Herculaneum papyri. The Index Praesocraticorum Philosophorum Herculanensis (IPPH) aims to lay the foundations for a systematic analysis of the Traditio Praesocratica within Epicureanism. This article presents the edition of the Arabic papyrus, document A.P. 980, which is currently kept at the papyrus collection of the Austrian National Library in Vienna (Papyrus Erzherzog Rainer). The πλοῖον κοπρηγόν was a specific kind of boat that was dedicated to the conveyance of manure. It is evidenced in Memphis only by two Roman papyri. It seems that there were several kinds of such boats, operating on various scales and revealing various architectural features. This study argues that ethnic designations in the documentary sources constitute our best evidence for immigration to Hellenistic Egypt, for the ethnic composition of the population and for the relative proportions of the different immigrant groups in relation to each other. Ethnic designations indicate that Hellenistic Egypt became ethnically diverse and that a substantial proportion of immigrants arrived from outside the Graeco-Macedonian world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Normally the ius liberorum is associated with Roman citizens, but in the lex Irnitana we have evidence of non-Roman members of the curial class of Baetica who took advantage of this privilege. In Roman Egypt, the constitution of the boulai in the nome capitals could have provided a similar context for the selection of local elites in which Romanized Egyptians obtained that privilege.
