The suitability of silages containing buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) and chicory (Cichorium intybus) for the nutrition of dairy cows was determined. Buckwheat and chicory were sown in mixture with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), and a pure ryegrass culture served as a control forage. Swards were harvested 55 d after sowing and were ensiled after wilting, without additives in small round bales. Finally, buckwheat and chicory made up the dietary dry matter (DM) proportions of 0.46 and 0.34, respectively. Concentrates were restricted to 2 kg/d. Diets were fed to 3 × 6 late-lactating cows for 15 d at ad libitum access. During the collection period (days 10–15) amounts of feed intake and faeces, urine and milk were recorded and samples were taken. Ensilability was good for buckwheat and ryegrass swards, but was so less for the chicory sward, which was rich in total ash. The buckwheat silage was rich in acid detergent fibre (445 g/kg DM) and lignin (75.7 g/kg DM) and contained less crude protein (135 g/kg DM) and ether extract (15.8 g/kg DM) than the other silages. Consistent with that, the apparent digestibility of the organic matter and fibre were lowest when feeding this silage. The potassium concentrations in the chicory and ryegrass silages were high (61 g/kg) and lower in buckwheat (47 g/kg). No significant treatment effects on intake, body weight, milk yield or milk composition as well as plasma β-hydroxybutyrate and non-esterified fatty acids occurred. Being lowest in nitrogen (N) content, the buckwheat silage resulted in the lowest urine N losses and the most efficient N utilisation for milk protein synthesis, but this at cost of body N retention. The results show that silages containing buckwheat and chicory may be used as components of the forage part of dairy cows’ diets even though they were found to have a lower feeding value than ryegrass silage. Three temperate forages, sainfoin, birdsfoot trefoil, and chicory, characterized by elevated contents of plant secondary compounds, were compared to a ryegrass-clover mixture (control) in dried (Experiment 1) and ensiled form (Experiment 2) in their palatability and nutritional value. Palatability was measured in adult wethers (n = 6) allowed to choose between the familiar control forage and one of the three test plants. Palatability index was calculated from differences in intake of control and test plants measured after given times. Generally at first contact, palatability of the unfamiliar plants was low. Lag time until palatability index approached or exceeded a value of 100 was 2 - 5 d, but could not be related to the content of condensed tannins. Sainfoin had a high palatability, the highest content of condensed tannins (77.4 ± 10.23 g/kg DM), a high content of duodenally utilisable crude protein (94.7 ± 16.87 g/100 g CP), and a high content of metabolizable energy (9.5 ± 0.38 MJ ME/kg DM), making this plant most promising for various purposes including anthelmintic action. Two experiments were conducted with 30 dairy cows each, to study the preference for fresh (Experiment 1) and ensiled (Experiment 2) ryegrass, white and red clover. Both experiments consisted of three choice diets with white or red clover or both, offered with ryegrass, and two diets with ryegrass mixed with white or red clover (40% clover). Cows consumed diets with 37.7% fresh white and 45.9% red clover, and no preference was observed when the cows were offered all three forages. By contrast, cows preferred white and red clover silage (73.0 and 69.2%, respectively) over ryegrass silage (of lower nutritive quality). When offered three forages, cows preferred white (59.8%) over red clover (17.5%) and ryegrass (22.7%). Choice diets resulted in diets similar (fresh forages) or higher in nutrient content and digestibility (silages). Treatments did not affect feed intake and performance. Choices compared to mixed diets with red clover silage were preferable regarding the fatty acid composition of the milk fat. Obviously, only large differences in nutrient and energy concentration facilitate preferences for clovers over ryegrass, which could, depending on clover type, be beneficial in terms of the milk's fatty acid composition. The ruminal degradation of RNA in rye grass ( Lolium perenne ) was studied using the bag method. A non-lactating cow (BW 550 kg) fitted with a rumen cannula was used and fed twice daily at maintenance level with a chopped grass hay-based ration containing 30% ground barley. Rye grass, labelled during growth by fertilization with 15 N 2 -urea (9.5 atom% 15 N, 20 g N/m 2 ), was cut at seven stages of growth and maturity and freeze-dried. RNA-N represented 6 to 17% of total N. Labelled grass samples (milled to 5.0 mm screen, 5.0 ± 0.1 g DM) were incubated in polyester bags (100 × 200 mm, pore size 50 μm) in the rumen for periods of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 48 h. Data of N and RNA disappearances from the bags were fitted to an exponential equation to estimate parameters of degradation. The effective degradability of RNA in the rumen averaged 90 ± 4%, for N it was 11% units lower ( P  < 0.001). Degradability of RNA was correlated to that of N ( R 2  = 0.92). Degradability of RNA ( R 2  = 0.96) and N ( R 2  = 0.93) decreased with increasing fibre content of grass. Increasing the fibre content by 1% diminished the degradability of RNA and N by 1.1% units and 2.4% units, respectively ( P  < 0.001). Assuming a microbial protein synthesis in the rumen of 150 g/kg DOM, a N : RNA ratio of 1 : 1.35 in rumen microbes and a rumen outflow rate of 0.06 h  − 1 , a model calculation indicates that about 9 to 19% of duodenal RNA are of dietary origin in animals fed grass.
