A study was conducted in a marine inlet to assess the effects of untreated discharges from a pulp and paper mill, a municipality, and industries in western Newfoundland on winter flounder ( Pleuronectes americanus), a fish species shown previously to be sensitive to environmental contaminants in sediment. The fish were captured by SCUBA divers about 2 km down-current from the mill discharging effluent containing resin acids, and at three reference sites 2 to 11 km away near the opposite shore, each spring in five consecutive years and the fish were necropsied on site. A total of 360 and 339 flounder were examined near the mill and references sites, respectively. Several bioindicators were used to assess fish health including parasites. More fish exhibiting external and microscopic lesions in several tissues, lower condition factors, elevated hepatosomatic index, and delayed reproductive development were observed in samples taken near the paper mill than at the reference sites. A higher prevalence of an ectoparasite, Cryptocotyle lingua, but a significantly lower mean abundance of three metazoans infecting the digestive tract was noted in fish near the mill than in the reference samples. These results, comprising abnormal fish size distribution, low body condition factor, external and internal lesions, enlarged liver, delayed gonadal development, and changes in parasitism, were stress-related, indicative of impaired health, and associated primarily with untreated discharges from the pulp and paper mill. This integrated and multidisciplinary study also provides further evidence on the use of fish parasites as a valid and an additional bioindicator in programs monitoring environmental contaminants. A study was conducted to determine the influence of decontamination on winter flounder living downstream from a pulp and paper mill. The fish and controls were held 8–26 weeks under contaminant-free conditions in aquaria supplied with ambient sea water. Groups of flounder, for comparison, were also sampled near the paper mill at the time of or following autopsy. No differences were apparent in length/organ-weight relationships between depurated and control groups after 26 weeks at 0–6°C, but condition factor, gonadal and hepatosomatic indices, coincident with elevated levels of detoxifying enzymes, differed from field-derived samples. Pathological changes, including hemosiderin deposits in the liver and spleen, decreased, whereas pericholangitis and clear cell foci were apparent in the depurated fish and in the field samples. In two additional groups decontaminated for 8–16 weeks at 6–16°C, there was no evidence of pericholangitis, but hemosiderin deposits persisted and an increase of fibrosis and clear cell foci occurred in contrast to the field group. These results suggest that some tissue repair in the liver transpired primarily during summer while other lesions, such as preneoplastic clear cell foci, which were probably induced prior to depuration, increased, but hemosiderin concentration remained unchanged. This study assessed the effects of discharges from a sulphite-bleaching paper mill on winter flounder ( Pleuronectes americanus) sampled each spring over a 5-year period in St. George’s Bay, Newfoundland, prior to foraging activity. The fish were captured by SCUBA divers near the mill and at a reference site 10 km up current. Several bioindicators were used to assess fish health. Larger and older flounder exhibiting gross and microscopic tissue lesions, lower condition factor, and elevated hepatosomatic index but lower gonadosomatic index that was associated with delayed development, were observed in samples caught near the mill compared to those at the reference site. Additionally, fish examined near the mill were infested with an ectoparasite, Cryptocotyle lingua, that causes black spot disease but harbored fewer numbers of a digene, Steringophorus furciger, in the digestive tract than samples taken at the reference site. These results suggest that abnormal size distribution, interruption of growth, high prevalence of lesions, lower condition factor, enlarged liver, delayed gonadal development, and differences in parasitic levels were indicative of stress in winter flounder caused by discharges from the mill compared to samples from a reference site. The influence of temperature variation on the humoral immune response using the plaque-forming cell (PFC) assay in freshwater fish Channa punctatus (Bloch) was investigated. The fish was exposed to 1% concentration (v/v in water) of paper and pulp mill effluent under standard laboratory conditions in glass aquaria. Effect of effluent exposure on the organ weight and organ cellularity was also evaluated. In general, lower temperature in winter produced a subdued response in control as well as experimental group. At higher temperature of summer and rainy seasons, an elevated response was observed. It was revealed that though suppressive effect of effluent was evident during all the seasons, in summer, extent of suppression was greater as compared to winter. Paper and pulp mill effluent exposure resulted in a decrease in the splenic and pronephric (head kidney) cellularity, with more pronounced effect in the summer season. We also studied the effects of the length of exposure on various parameters. Fish were exposed for 15, 30, 60, and 90 days to effluent. Short-term exposure for 15 days induced an elevated PFC response, but change was not statistically significant. Conversely, the exposure for 30, 60, and 90 days significantly reduced (p < 0.05–0.001) the PFC response. Long-term exposure also caused significant reduction (p < 0.05–0.01) in the weights of lymphoid organs (spleen, head kidney, and total kidney). These results show a suppressive effect of chemical constituents of paper and pulp mill effluent on the immune functions. Furthermore, results demonstrated that though modulatory effect of the temperature on immune functions is recognized, it was not a major contributory factor to the elevated immunotoxicity of paper and pulp mill effluent in the seasons of high temperature. This study was conducted to ascertain the influence of sediment contaminated with pulp and paper mill effluent in a fjord on winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus, based on a laboratory study. Flounder, captured from a pristine site, were exposed in a flow-through system for 16 weeks to sediment collected at 2, 5, 7, and 10 km from the outfall. A group of controls was placed in uncontaminated sediment. Mortality occurred almost exclusively in fish exposed to sediment taken from 2 km than from more distant sites. Additionally, the condition factor was lower, the liver was enlarged, and toxicopathic lesions in the liver and spleen were significantly greater in fish submerged in the sediment than in fish from the more distant locations or the controls. Two ectoparasites including a ciliate, Trichodina jadranica, and a monogenean, Gyrodactylus pleuronecti, were observed only in the control group, while a digenean in the digestive tract, Steringophorus furciger, was more abundant in fish exposed to sediment from sites more distant from the outfall and the controls than at 2 km. Comparison of these results with data from a previous gradient field study on biological variables in winter flounder, captured at 2, 5, 7, and 10 km down-current from the outfall, revealed an enlarged liver that was associated with elevated levels of detoxification of hepatic enzymes and prevalence of toxicopathic lesions in both the liver and the spleen; these were significantly greater in samples taken nearest to the outfall from the mill than at more distant sites. Moreover, two metazoan parasites, S. furciger (Digenea) and Echinorhynchus gadi (Acanthocephala), in the digestive were more abundant in samples taken at farther locations and also from the reference sites. These results, based on a laboratory study, are in agreement with previous observations that winter flounder exposed to sediment at the site nearest to the outfall, where high concentrations of toxic contaminants persisted, was greater than in the fish from the other locations. In the noncereal-producing areas, there is not enough straw to supply the amount required for animal bedding. However, pulp and paper mills produce tons of wood fiber wastes, including de-inking paper sludge (DPS), in which most toxic compounds are at their detection limit. Among the detected compounds in DPS, aluminum, copper, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present and were selected as model molecules. In this context, broilers were submitted to a diet containing 0, 5, and 10% of their ration as DPS. In addition, broilers and pigs were grown on de-inking paper sludge and wood shavings beddings. The presence of aluminum and copper were evaluated in blood and bones, whereas the presence of PAHs was evaluated in fat, liver, meat, and urine or blood of broilers and pigs. Animal performances were also investigated. DPS bedding did not increase aluminum or copper contents of blood or bones or PAHs in animal tissues. This long-term study (2003-2010) compared the breeding parameters of great tits living in a paper-and-pulp-industry area to those of great tits living in a rural area on the west coast of Portugal. We also measured the abundance of caterpillar biomass, an important food source and determinant of breeding success for tits. In 2009, we further analysed trace metal [arsenic (As), calcium (Ca), cadmium, copper, mercury (Hg), nickel, lead, selenium, and zinc] as well as Ca concentrations in excrement of 15-day-old great tit nestlings. Generally, for most trace metals, fecal concentrations were similar at both sites. Nonetheless, greater Hg levels and lower As levels were detected in the industrial area. Great tits laid more eggs and produced more fledglings in the industrial area than in the rural area. Caterpillar biomass was also greater in the industrial area, which likely explains the better breeding success. Wild-caught European perch (Perca fluviatilis) were exposed in the laboratory to untreated bleached pulp and paper mill effluent in two separate experiments. The first experiment was conducted at 7-8°C using effluent concentrations of 5 and 10%, and the second experiment was conducted at ambient river temperature of 4-20°C using an effluent concentration of 1%. Trichodinid ciliates were identified and enumerated at the end of the exposure using a mucus subsampling technique from gill and skin as well as a formalin immersion technique, which provided total counts on each fish. Four different trichodinid species were identified on the fish. Prevalence of infection, mean number, and mean density of Trichodina spp. decreased on fish exposed to effluents compared with controls. Prevalence of infection, mean number, and mean density of Trichodinella epizootica decreased on fish exposed to 5% and 10% effluents but increased on fish exposed to 1% effluents compared with controls. These results demonstrate that trichodinid ciliates vary in their susceptibility to at least certain types of contaminants and cautions against using trichodinids as environmental indicators without delineating species. Physiological and biochemical biomarker responses were studied in juvenile whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) exposed experimentallyto effluent from the forest industry. The large study area (609 km2), Southern Lake Saimaa, in Southeast Finland, receives 330,000 m3 d-1 of biologically and 55,000 m3 d-1 of chemically treated effluents, discharged fromtwo integrated elementary chlorine free (ECF) bleached kraft pulp and paper mills, from one ECF pulp mill, and from one mill producing unbleached pulp and cardboard. The assessment of exposure to effluent discharged from the mills was based on lake water chlorophenolics (CPs) and resin acids (RAs) measured in samples collected from the 22 experimental sites along the area. Despite the low levels of effluent constituents in the lake, they were still accumulated in detectable levels in fish bile, indicating an exposure to the bioactive compounds of effluents. In comparison to the reference area, a two- to four-foldincrease in ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity was observed in whitefish exposed in the vicinity (1--6 km) of all the mills. However, cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) gene expression was increased in only one of the receiving areas, indicating higher sensitivity of theEROD activity in the present study. There were no statistically significant correlations between EROD activity and the ambient water concentrations of the CPs, the RAs, or effluent dilution expressed by water sodium concentration. Neither bile chlorophenolics nor bile resin acids showed a significant correlation with EROD. No significant changes in circulating reproductive steroids, 17beta-estradiol and testosterone, in juvenile whitefish were observed. The aim of this study was to assess the use of aldehyde indicator pads for detection of glutaraldehyde and alkaline glutaraldehyde permeation through chemical protective gloves under simulated in-use conditions. The quantitative analysis of glutaraldehyde permeation through a glove material was determined for Metricide, Wavicide, and 50% glutaraldehyde following a solvent-desorption process and gas chromatographic analysis. All glutaraldehyde solutions exhibited >99% adsorption (including both the glutaraldehyde oligomers of the reaction product and the excess glutaraldehyde) on the pads over the spiking range 0.05–5.0 μL. Breakthrough times for protective gloves were determined using the Thermo-Hand test method, and found to range from 76 to 150, from 170 to 230, and from 232 to 300 min for Metricide, Wavicide, and 50% glutaraldehyde, respectively. Glutaraldehyde recovery was calculated and ranged from 61 to 80% for all glutaraldehyde solutions. The mass of glutaraldehyde in these solutions at the time of breakthrough detection ranged from 17 to 18, from 18 to 19, and from 19 to 20 μg/cm2 for Wavicide, 50% glutaraldehyde solution, and Metricide, respectively. A toxicity evaluation is an important parameter in wastewater quality and in the monitoring of discharged effluents. Some organic and inorganic compounds at toxic levels have been detected in industrial discharges, resulting in plant upsets and discharge permit violations. In some cases, even though the effluent does not exceed the chemical-specific discharge limits, the results of toxicity tests show potential toxicity. Knowledge of the toxicity of effluents can benefit treatment plant operators in optimizing plant operation, protecting receiving water quality, and establishing sewer discharge permits. In the Turkish regulations only toxicity dilution factor with fish is part of the toxicity monitoring program of permissible wastewater discharge. This study investigated the acute toxicity of pulp-paper, leather, and petrochemical industry wastewaters by traditional and enrichment toxicity tests and emphasized the importance of toxicity tests in wastewater discharge regulations. The enrichment toxicity tests are novel applications indicating whether there is potential toxicity or stimulation conditions. Different organisms were used, including bacteria (Floc and Coliform bacteria) algae (Chlorella sp.), fish (Lepistes sp.), and protozoan species (Vorticella sp.) to represent four trophic levels. The toxicity test results were compared with chemical analyses to identify the pollutants responsible for the toxicity in the effluent wastewater samples. Toxicity of the effluents could not be explained by using physicochemical analyses in five cases for the leather and four cases for the pulp-paper and petrochemical industries. Natural resource managers are concerned about the impacts of aerial ultra-low volume spray (ULV) of insecticides for mosquito control (i.e., mosquito adulticides) and seek science-driven management recommendations that reduce risk but allow vector control for nearby human populations. Managers at the National Key Deer Refuge (Florida Keys, FL) are concerned for ULV effects upon conservation efforts for imperiled butterflies (Florida leafwing [Anaea troglodyta floridalis] and Bartram's hairstreak [Strymon acis bartrami] butterflies). No-spray zones were designated for protection of those butterflies, but their effectiveness for mitigation is unclear. To address this uncertainty, cholinesterase activity (ChE) and mortality were monitored for caged butterflies gulf fritillary [Agraulis vanilla] and great southern white [Ascia monuste]) deployed on the Refuge during three aerial ULV applications of the insecticide naled. Residue samplers also were deployed to estimate butterfly exposure. Spray efficacy against mosquitoes was assessed by deploying caged mosquitoes at the same locations as the butterflies. Average naled residue levels on filter paper samplers in the target area (1882–2898 µg/m2) was significantly greater than in the no-spray zone (9–1562 µg/m2). Differences between the no-spray zone and target area for butterfly mortality and ChE were inconsistent. Average mortality was significantly lower, and average ChE was significantly higher in the no-spray zone for larvae of one species but not for larvae of the other species. Mosquito mortality did not differ significantly between the two areas. Data from the present study reflect the inconsistent effectiveness of no-spray zones on the Refuge using standard methods employed at the time by the vector control agency in the Florida Keys and possibly by other vector control agencies in similar coastal environments. Furthermore, these findings helped to guide the design and to improve the conservation value of future no-spray zone delineations while allowing for treatment in areas where mosquito control is necessary for vector-borne disease reduction. Sediments polluted by historical emissions from anthropogenic point sources are common in industrialized parts of the world and pose a potential threat to the function of aquatic ecosystems. Gradient studies using fish as a bioindicator are an option to assess the ecological impact of locally polluted areas. This study investigates the remaining effects of historical emissions on sediments outside ten Swedish pulp and paper mills using perch (Perca fluviatilis). The aim has been to obtain a general picture of the impact area of local deposits of cellulose fiber-rich sediments containing elevated levels of trace metals, e.g., Hg, and organochlorines, e.g., dioxins. In addition to analyzing contaminant levels in muscle and liver tissue, morphological measures in the fish that constitute biomarkers for health and reproductivity were measured. Another aim was to augment existing historical data sets to observe possible signs of environmental recovery. Overall, the results indicate only a minor elevation in contaminant levels and a minor impact on the fish health status in the polluted areas, which in several cases is an improvement from historical conditions. However, exceptions exist. Differences in the ecosystems' responses to pollution loads are primarily explained by abiotic factors such as water turnover rate, bottom dynamic conditions, and water chemistry. Weaknesses in the sampling methodology and processing of data were identified. After minor modifications, the applied survey strategy has the potential to be a management tool for decision-makers working on the remediation of contaminated areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an increasingly popular vertebrate model used for assessing the toxicity of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on living beings. The zebrafish features high genetic homology to mammals, because of its rapid embryonic development, optical transparency of phenotypic screening embryos, high throughput genetic and chemical screening which make them a powerful toxicological model. This systematic review aimed to assess the recent literature on the use of zebrafish model in EDCs toxicity studies. We capture the data on the types of EDCs used, zebrafish life stages associated with the toxicity, and its effects on the alterations in neuroendocrine factors and cardiac hypoxia in zebrafish. A total of 17 articles published between 2010 and 2020 were curated. The information gathered highlighted the association of EDCs with cardiological outcomes and neurobehavioral effects and distorted expression of genes. The genes that were highlighted in the paper include bdnf, ntrk2a, grin2cb, VTG-1, HIF-1α, tnnt2, ntrk1, and pax6b. The effect of EDCs on cardiac hypoxia and neurodevelopmental and behavioral factors of zebrafish were described in all the papers chosen for this review. The involvement of EDCs in altered regulation of gene expression can be studied further to identify the potential EDC compounds on its toxicological and endocrine disruption function at the molecular level. We have reviewed a paper titled "Bioaccumulation of Methyl Siloxanes in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and in an Estuarine Food Web in Northeastern China" by Xue et al., which was published in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology in 2019. In the paper, the authors presented and discussed the measured bioconcentration factors (BCFs), biomagnification factors (BMFs), and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of selected volatile methylsiloxanes in Shuangtaizi estuary in China. Although we appreciate their efforts for sample collection and data analysis, we have identified significant errors in calculations of BCFs, TMFs, and BMFs, as well as animal welfare issues and food web trophic level assumptions. Based on the data, we have attempted to correct some of the analysis and offered a more complete and robust interpretation of the related data, when possible. This paper presents a semiquantitative method to help ecotoxicologists evaluate the consistency of data within the available peer-reviewed literature. In this case study, we queried whether there is consistent evidence of direct toxicity in Anurans exposed to atrazine at concentrations ≤ 100 μg/L under laboratory conditions. Atrazine was selected because of the relatively large repository of Anuran toxicity data. To accomplish this, we interrogated available data found in recent quantitative weight-of-evidence risk assessments for atrazine with a series of yes or no questions developed a priori. The questions examined consistency of reported effects within and between studies, within and between species, and across a wide range of endpoints categories (e.g., survivorship, growth and development, reproduction). The analysis found no compelling evidence of a consistent direct effect in Anurans around growth and development, reproduction, or survivorship at concentrations of up to at least 100 μg/L atrazine in laboratory studies. Further work is needed to refine the approach, including accounting for the magnitude of the reported effects. However, we recommend that ecotoxicologists employ some method of formal consistency of effects assessment method routinely before performing toxicity tests, in the contextualizing of new data, and in reviews of contaminants. The surveillance of chemical substances in the scope of Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) is classically performed through bio-assays from which data are collected and then analysed and/or modelled. Some analysis are based on the fitting of toxicokinetic (TK) models to assess the bioaccumulation capacity of chemical substances via the estimation of bioaccumulation metrics as required by regulatory documents. Given that bio-assays are particularly expensive and time consuming, it is of crucial importance to deeply benefit from all information contained in the data. By revisiting the calculation of bioaccumulation metrics under a Bayesian framework, this paper suggests changes in the way of characterising the bioaccumulation capacity of chemical substances. For this purpose, a meta-analysis of a data-rich TK database was performed, considering uncertainties around bioaccumulation metrics. Our results were statistically robust enough to suggest an additional criterion to the single median estimate of bioaccumulation metrics to assign a chemical substance to a given bioaccumulation capacity. Our proposal is to use the 75th percentile of the uncertainty interval of the bioaccumulation metrics, which revealed an appropriate complement for the classification of chemical substances (e.g. PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) and vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative) under the EU chemicals legislation). A bleached sulfate integrated pulp and paper mill producing printingand writing paper from mixed tropical hardwood and bamboo was studied. The mill uses a 'conventional bleaching sequence', C-E-H1-H2, withan average molecular chlorine consumption of 50 kg per ton of air-dried pulp (ADP). The content of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) in the bleaching filtrate in terms of the nordic toxicity equivalent (N-TEQ) was 33.5, 1.15, 0.56, and 0.014pg/L for the E, C, H1, and H2 bleaching stages, respectively. The corresponding PCDFs and PCDDs loads in ng/t ADP were in the same ranking, i.e., 670, 69, 11.2, and 0.28, respectively. The congener and isomeric pattern of PCDFs and PCDDs of the bleaching filtrate and the bleached pulp was found to be typical for the chlorine bleaching plant effluent. The obtained dioxin load formed in the mill is in agreement with Western studies for the given multiple chlorine of 0.21-0.23. The load is, however, lower than reported discharges from Scandinavian mills using 1980s bleaching technologies, but substantially higher than the discharges from mills with modern bleaching technologies. As mentioned in our paper, we were trying to provide the baseline information for the bioaccumulation potentials of methyl siloxanes in food chains in an estuary food web. Although TMFs were below 1 in food chains of FC-01 and FC-03, the high TMFs calculated for food chain of FC-02 deserve further investigations for the bioaccumulation potentials of methyl siloxanes in this estuary food web. By claiming that "this is the first study to investigate the bioaccumulation behaviors of methyl siloxanes by coupling BCF and BMF with TMF", we mean that we first used the three factors to assess the bioaccumulation potentials of methyl siloxanes in an estuary food web. Although we did not trace the origin of the common carp used in the bioconcentration study, the information gained from BCF helped us to understand the bioaccumulation potentials of methyl siloxanes in the estuary food web when combined with the information of BMF and TMF acquired from this food web. Anionic surfactants are one of the pollutants derived from particulate matter (PM) and adversely affect the health of living organisms. In this study, the compositions of surfactants extracted from PM and vehicle soot collected in an urban area were investigated. A high-volume air sampler was used to collect PM sample at urban area based on coarse (> 1.5 µm) and fine (< 1.5 µm) mode particles. Meanwhile, the vehicle soot was collected randomly from the exhaust pipe of various types of diesel and petrol vehicles using a soft brush during dry days. The concentration of anionic surfactants, such as Methylene Blue Active Substances (MBAS), was determined by the colorimetric method using UV–Vis Spectrophotometer. Morphological properties of the PM and exhaust soot sample was studied using field-emission scanning electron microscope. Results revealed that the MBAS concentration was dominated by fine mode particles (6.03 ± 3.97 µmol g−1), whereas heavy-duty vehicles, such as buses, demonstrated the highest surfactant concentration with an average value of 0.340 ± 0.180 µmol g−1. The structure of collected PM for all samples mostly appeared to be an irregular shape with the size range of ultrafine particles (0.05–0.2 µm). The emission of surfactants from diesel and petrol vehicles, especially at urban areas, should be a major concern, because they could negatively affect human health and the environment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed to elucidate the distribution, ecological risk, pathways, and fluxes of these pollutants in and around the Seto Inland Sea, an industrialized coastal region of Japan. High molecular weight PAHs (5–6 rings) were primarily found in regions close to the bay estuaries, and their proportions decreased at distances further from the estuaries (offshore areas), where low molecular weight PAHs (2–4 rings) were more ubiquitous. Screening-level risk assessments revealed that the PAHs found in the sediments should have no adverse effects on benthic communities. A mass balance for PAHs in the Seto Inland Sea, calculated based on data collected in the field and published literature findings, showed the PAH flux into the Seto Inland Sea from atmospheric deposition were ca. 6 times higher than that from riverine inflows. Comparison of the amount of the PAH mass flux between the Seto Inland Sea and the sea of the Europe and Asian countries indicated that the Seto Inland Sea is less polluted than the Gulf of Lion, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Bohai Sea, China and more polluted than the Yellow Sea. Between 1991 and 1992, comprehensive toxicological, chemical, and benthic community structure surveys were conducted at Jackfish Bay, Lake Superior, Ontario, to assess sediment quality below a bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME) outfall. In this report, we describe the spatial distribution and concentration of extractable organic chlorines (EOX) in sediments below the outfall in relation to effluent discharge patterns, sediment deposition, and bioaccumulation potential. Triplicate sediment samples were collected by Ekman grab from 29 and 44 stations in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and from 15 stations in three reference areas not exposed to the effluent. For each sample, organic carbon content, dry weight, and sediment-associated EOX were determined. In addition, sediment traps were used to determine sediment deposition along two tangents transecting the effluent plume and at a reference station located approximately 4,200 m from the outfall. The spatial distribution of sediment EOX consisted of two distinct concentration gradients, each linked to effluent discharge patterns from Blackbird Creek and dominant circulatory patterns in Jackfish Bay: a north-south gradient, extending along the west shore of Jackfish Bay, and it east-west gradient. Sediment EOX ranged from 7,000 mg/kg organic carbon (oc) (2,050 mg/kg dry solids (ds)) in depositional sediments of Moberley Bay to nondetectable at some stations in eastern and outer Jackfish Bay. Reference (background) concentrations ranged from nondetectable to 3,000 mg/kg oc (1--15 mg/kg ds). The attenuation of EOX was significantly correlated with the rate of sediment deposition (r3 = 0.57; p <-0.001). The increased demand for technology-critical elements (TCEs) in emerging technologies brings about the need to determine their spatial distribution in the environment and establish regulatory guidelines. In this paper, concentrations of Li, Sc, Nb, W, Ga, Ge, and REY (rare earth elements, including yttrium) in soils collected from different parent materials in the upper catchment of the Sava River (Slovenia, Croatia) were analysed. Results of multivariate (principal component analysis) and univariate (threshold methods) statistical techniques were used to determine geochemical characteristics of studied soils to identify the background variations and to establish geochemical threshold values. The investigated area is characterized by great lithological diversity and substantial variation of TCE concentrations. Among methods for assessment of geochemical threshold, the TIF (Tukey inner fence) and 97.5th percentile delivered the most reasonable results. Some exceedances above the 97.5th percentile were natural in origin, caused by local geology. In Taiwan, aquatic toxicity tests for industrial effluents are not required for discharge permits. However, relying on traditional chemical and physical characteristics of an effluent to monitor and regulate such discharges to manage water quality of a receiving water is insufficient. In this study, we used two fish species, Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), and three toxic endpoints, including acute and subacute toxicity, to determine toxicity of seven different types of industrial effluents. Prior to the study, two reference toxicants were tested on two fish species. The LC50s of CdCl2 for tilapia and medaka juveniles were 29.6 ± 15.3 mg/L and 2.2 ± 1.2 mg/L, respectively. The sensitivity of medaka embryo mortality and hatching inhibition to CdCl2 were about the same, with the LC50 and EC50 of 0.3 ± 0.1 mg/L and 0.1 ± 0.1 mg/L, respectively. The LC50s for tilapia and medaka juveniles to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were 19.7 ± 10.6 mg/L and 12.5 ± 5.9 mg/L. The medaka embryo was less sensitive to SDS than to CdCl2. The embryo's LC50 for SDS was 5.8 ± 2.8 mg/L and the hatching inhibition EC50 was 1.3 ± 1.1 mg/L. Results of toxicity tests on different effluents showed that the electroplating effluent was the most toxic, followed by acrylonitrile manufacturing and pulp/paper mill discharges. The LC50s of the electroplating effluent to different assays were in the range of several percents of the whole effluent. The pulp/paper effluent was toxic only to the medaka embryo. Groundwater contamination is a global problem that has a significant impact on human health and ecological services. Studies reported in this special issue focus on contaminants in groundwater of geogenic and anthropogenic origin distributed over a wide geographic range, with contributions from researchers studying groundwater contamination in India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Thus, this special issue reports on the latest research conducted in the eastern hemisphere on the sources and scale of groundwater contamination and the consequences for human health and the environment, as well as technologies for removing selected contaminants from groundwater. In this article, the state of the science on groundwater contamination is reviewed, and the papers published in this special issue are summarized in terms of their contributions to the literature. Personal care product (PCP) chemicals have a greater chance of accumulation in the aquatic environments because of their volume of use. PCPs are biologically active substances that can exert an adverse effect on the ecology and food safety. Information on the status of these substances in Indian open water ecosystems is scarce. In this paper, we report the incidence of two synthetic antimicrobials, triclosan (TCS), including its metabolite methyl-triclosan (Me-TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) in Torsa, a transboundary river flowing through India. In water TCS and TCC were detected at levels exceeding their respective PNEC (Predictive No Effect Concentration). Both the compounds were found to be bioaccumulative in fish. TCS concentration (91.1–589 µg/kg) in fish was higher than that of TCC (29.1–285.5 µg/kg). The accumulation of residues of the biocides varied widely among fishes of different species, ecological niche, and feeding habits. Me-TCS could be detected in fishes and not in water. The environmental hazard quotient of both TCS and TCC in water indicated a moderate risk. However, the health risk analysis revealed that fishes of the river would not pose any direct hazard to human when consumed. This is the first report of the occurrence of these PCP chemicals in a torrential river system of the eastern Himalayan region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that can act as endocrine disruptors in vertebrates. Biologically active levels of phytoestrogens have been found in aquatic habitats near wood pulp and paper mills, biofuel manufacturing plants, sewage-treatment plants, and agricultural fields. Phytoestrogens are known to cause hormonal and gonadal changes in male fish, but few studies have connected these effects to outcomes relevant to reproductive success. In one experiment, we exposed sexually mature male fighting fish Betta splendens to environmentally relevant (1 μg L) and pharmacological concentrations (1000 μg L) of the phytoestrogen genistein as well as to a positive control of waterborne 17β-estradiol (E2; 1 μg L), and a negative control of untreated water. In a second experiment, we exposed male B. splendens to environmentally relevant concentrations (1 μg L) of genistein and β-sitosterol singly and in combination as well as to the positive and negative controls. All exposures were 21 days in duration. We measured sex-steroid hormone levels, gonadosomatic index (GSI), sperm concentration and motility, and fertilization success in these fish. We found that exposure to genistein did not affect circulating levels of the androgen 11-ketotestosterone or the estrogen E2 relative to negative-control fish. We also found that neither of the compounds nor their mixture affected GSI, sperm concentration or motility, or fertilization success in exposed fish relative to negative-control fish. However, fish exposed to phytoestrogens showed some evidence of fewer but more motile sperm than fish exposed to the positive control E2. We conclude that sexually mature male B. splendens are relatively immune to reproductive impairments from short-term exposure to waterborne phytoestrogens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemicals pollution in the environment has attracted attention all over the world, and the toxicity prediction of chemical pollutants has become quite important. In this paper, we introduce a simple approach to predict the toxicity of some chemical components, in which the Tchebichef image moment (TM) method was employed to extract useful chemical information from the images of molecular structures to establish quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) prediction models. The proposed approach was applied to predict the toxicity of anilines and phenols for the aquatic organisms of P. subcapitata and V. fischeri, in which the obtained TMs were defined as the independent variables, while the biological toxicity (pEC50) was regarded to be the dependent variable. Then, the predictive models were established by stepwise regression, respectively. The obtained squared correlation coefficients of leave-one-out cross-validation (Q2) for training sets and the predictive squared correlation coefficients (Rp2) for test sets of the two groups of data were higher than 0.79 and 0.75, respectively, which indicated that the obtained models possessed satisfactory accuracy and reliability. Compared with several reported methods, the proposed approach was more convenient and has a higher predictive capability. Our study provides another perspective in QSAR research. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to 0, 10, 30, and 70% (v/v) of a secondary-treated, integrated thermomechanical-bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent. The immunological parameters oxidative burst and phagocytosis of head kidney macrophages and total and differential circulating leukocytes were measured after 21 d of exposure. General parameters of stress and exposure including erythrocyte counts, numbers of degenerating erythrocytes, splenic pigmented macrophage aggregates (PMAs), spleen size, bile chemistry, and hepatic EROD activity were also assessed. Contrary to parallel chronic studies on the same effluent, EROD induction did not occur. Analyses of bile indicated uptake and accumulation of resin acids and some sterols. There was no measurable macrophage-related immunological dysfunction. However, circulating leukocytes, specifically lymphocytes, were reduced. The density of splenic PMAs increased over the exposure period, possibly in association with degenerating blood cells. There were statistical differences between staggered days of sampling in head kidney oxidative burst, white and mature red blood cell counts, and spleen size, indicating that relatively minor capture and handling stress could result in rapid changes in some parameters. Overall, it was concluded that the observed minor, indirect alterations in the immune response were likely the result predominantly of a nonspecific mechanism such as a cortisol-mediated stress response. Residue levels of azinphosmethyl and captan were determined from blotter paper patches attached to the clothing of personnel participating in an orchard spray program. Average exposure of 1.74 mg/man/hr for azinphosmethyl and 1.94 mg/man/hr for captan were extrapolated from mean residue values obtained from analyzing the patches. Azinphosmethyl residue found on apple and peach foliage had been reduced by 69% by the tenth day post-application, while captan residue had been reduced 50% for the same period. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for animals and yet becomes toxic with only a small increase in concentration. Toxicological studies have reported various effects of Se on fishes, including developmental impacts and deformities of the musculature and sensory systems. This paper investigates the impact of sublethal concentrations of Se on the ability of the Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas) to perform escape responses, a routine behaviour important to predator–prey dynamics. Predation is among the strongest evolutionary driving forces in nature. Changes to this dynamic can have effects that cascade through the ecosystem. We used responses to mechanical and visual stimuli to determine the impact of environmentally relevant concentrations of dietary selenomethionine on the behaviour of minnows. Latency to respond to the stimulus and kinematic performance were assessed. Our results indicated that there was no significant effect of selenomethionine on either the visual response to a threat or burst swimming behaviours of the fast-start response in minnows. Levels of Se in tissues approached that of tissue-specific guidelines set by regulatory bodies across North America. Traffic emission is a major source of air pollution in urban cities of developing world. This paper shows dependence of traffic-related air pollutants in urban cities on morning/evening peak hours and winter/summer seasons. This research also shows the meteorological impact, such as temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and wind speed (WS), on traffic-related air pollutants in urban cites. Based on the research output, the elevated level of PM concentration was observed between 1.8 and 6.7 times at all nearby roadway locations compared with background (IIT [ISM] campus). We have found 2.3, 2.4, 2.6 (morning) and 2.0, 2.1, and 2.1 (evening) times higher average PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 concentrations, respectively, in the winter than summer monitoring periods across all locations, due to the stable boundary layer, lower mixing height, and lower friction velocity. It is indicated that urban meteorology plays a crucial role in increasing or decreasing exposed pollutant concentrations in various microenvironments. The analysis of PM2.5/PM10 ratios was lower during whole campaign due to higher contribution of coarser particles generated by vehicles. During winter and summer seasons, 0.57 and 0.33 was observed, respectively. It is indicated that 57% and 33% of PM10 makes up PM2.5 particle, respectively. PM concentrations have showed a negative linear relationship with T and WS and positive relationship with RH in winter/summer seasons. The effect of sublethal concentrations of heavy metals on cladoceran growth and reproduction is a cornerstone of modern ecotoxicology. However, the literature contains assays across numerous concentrations, on numerous species and genotypes, and conditions are far from consistent. We undertook a systematic review of the sublethal effects of copper and cadmium concentrations on Cladocera spp. life history (reproduction, maturation age, and somatic growth rate). Using meta-analysis, we tested the hypothesis that the effects of increasing Cu and Cd concentrations on traits may vary by species. We also evaluated where possible whether the effect of metal concentrations on traits vary by water hardness, exposure duration, or whether the metals were delivered in aqueous solution or via food. We surveyed > 200 papers, resulting in a set of 32 experimental studies representing 446 trials where the results were presented compared with Daphnia magna—the most commonly assayed species. We found qualitatively similar effects of Cu and Cd on life history traits that included reduction in reproduction and somatic growth rate and delay of maturation. Cladocera species showed marked variations in their susceptibility to metals, and D. magna was found to be the least sensitive species to sublethal changes in reproduction. The effects were largely consistent for aqueous vs. dietary food. Water hardness, where data were available, had no detectable effect. Available data indicate that exposure duration had no effect on the toxicity of Cu but did for D. magna reproductive response to Cd. Since their ubiquity in the ocean and marine organisms was first revealed, global concern about microplastics has grown considerably. The North Pacific Ocean and the adjacent marginal seas have high levels of microplastic contamination compared with the global average. This special issue on microplastics was organized by the North Pacific Marine Science Organization to share information on microplastic pollution in the North Pacific region. The special issue highlights high levels of contamination in the North Pacific both on shorelines and at the sea surface. Particularly high levels of contamination were reported on the western and southern coasts of Korea. Sources, including sewage discharge, aquaculture, and shipyards, were implicated. With the direction and energy of surface winds and currents have an important influence on shoreline patterns of distribution. The special issue also demonstrates potential for ingestion of microplastic by small planktonic organisms at the base of the food chain. A wide range of chemicals are associated with plastic debris and concerns are expressed about the potential for these chemicals to transfer to biota upon ingestion. As an introduction to the topic, this paper provides a brief background on microplastic contamination, highlights some key research gaps, and summarizes findings from the articles published in this issue. Since the new millennium, a notion has developed in certain parts of society that environmental pollutants and their associated effects are under control. The primary objective of this investigation, performed in 2003, was to test whether this was actually the case in an industrialised region in the County of Västernorrland in northern Sweden with well-documented environmental pollution from past and present activities. This was performed by measuring a moderate battery of simple biomarkers in adult female perch at several stations. The point sources included sewage-treatment plants, pulp and paper mills, as well as other industries. The biomarkers included growth, somatic indices, gonad maturation status, gonad pigmentation, fin erosion, skin ulcers, and ethoxyresorufin- O-deethylase (EROD) activity in the liver. The results showed that the environmental pollutants and their associated effects were not under control. In fact, the health of the perch was impaired at all of the polluted stations. Many responses were unspecific with respect to underlying cause, whereas some effects on EROD activity and gonad maturation status were attributed to historical creosote pollution and current kraft pulp mill effluents, respectively. The Tinto and Odiel river basins (SW Spain) are known worldwide for their unique water characteristics. Such uniqueness is a consequence of their flow through the Iberian Pyrite Belt (an area rich in metal sulphides) and the mining activities in the basins. A process of sulphide oxidation occurs in this region, which acidifies the water and increases the amount of heavy metals in it. As a result, the rivers suffer the so-called 'acid mine drainage' (AMD). Traditional biotic diatom-based indexes (IPS, IBD, EPI-D, etc.) do not take into account the pollution caused by AMD. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new diatom-based index which can serve as a useful and quick monitoring tool. Such tool must reflect the level of AMD while being user friendly. We present the development and validation of the ICM ( Índice de Contaminación por Metales or Metal Pollution Index). ICM demonstrated to meet successfully the above criteria and, therefore, can assess water quality in the Tinto and Odiel Rivers. In addition, ICM was applied with satisfactory results in the Guadiamar River (SW Spain), which was subjected to AMD too. Many types of pulp and paper mill effluents have the ability to induce mixed-function oxygenase (MFO) activity and vitellogenin (VTG) protein in exposed male fish. The search for the compounds responsible for MFO induction has led to several classes of compounds, among them retene and stilbenes. The objective of this study was to investigate the biological activities of candidate stilbene compounds. Three stilbenes, 3,5-dihydroxystilbene (pinosylvin; P1), 3-hydroxy-5-methoxystilbene (P2), and 3,5-dimethoxystilbene (P3), were extracted from Scotch pine ( Pinus sylvestris) and purified to evaluate their ability to induce MFO activity in vitro using ethoxyresorufin- O-deethylase (EROD) activity in a rat hepatoma cell line (H4IIE). As these compounds may be chlorinated during pulp bleaching, chlorination of P2 was undertaken, producing di- and trichlorinated isomers (Cl-P2), which were also tested. Compounds were tested for EROD-inducing ability in vivo by exposing juvenile rainbow tout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) to waterborne concentrations (0.010 to 1.0 mg/L) for 4 days. Compounds were also tested for their ability to induce VTG in trout primary liver cells in vitro. The stilbenes were weak inducers of EROD and VTG. H4IIE EROD was induced by all four compounds, with the most potent induction by P3, followed by P1, the Cl-P2 mixture, and then P2. Induction for all four stilbenes was from 3.13 × 10 to 3.57 × 10 as potent as retene and about 1.11 × 10 to 1.20 × 10 as potent as TCDD. Juvenile rainbow trout did not show EROD induction after exposures to P1, P2, or the Cl-P2 mixture, whereas P3 caused activity fourfold above that of controls. P1, P3, and Cl-P2 all weakly induced VTG in rainbow trout hepatocytes. The most potent inducer of VTG was Cl-P2, followed by P3 and P1. The results show the ability of wood-derived stilbenes to cause weak MFO induction in fish and in rat liver cells and to weakly induce vitellogenin in fish liver cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Juvenile zebrafish ( Danio rerio) were exposed to different dilutions (0, 0.67, 2.5, 10, and 50%) of effluent water from a Swedish pulp mill that previously has been reported to be androgenic to fish. Exposure was performed between days 10–38 days post-hatch. Fish were sampled for whole-body vitellogenin concentrations at day 38 post-hatch and for histological examination of gonads at day 60 post-hatch. In fish exposed to the highest concentration of pulp mill effluent, elevated concentrations of vitellogenin were measured. The androgenicity of the pulp mill water was confirmed by the increased number of males recorded at 60 days post-hatch. Image analysis of testes indicated stimulation of spennato genesis. Intersex fish were observed in all exposure groups. An androgenic activity equivalent to 5.6 ng/L dihydroxytestosterone was measured using the yeast androgen screen (YAS) assay. The present study demonstrates that both androgenic and estrogenic effects can be detected when exposing zebrafish during the juvenile period to complex mixtures of chemicals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Kalamazoo River Superfund site in Michigan is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which were heavily discharged into the river from several paper companies as part of the deinking process in the 1950s through 1970s. We characterized biomarkers of chronic PCB exposure in a resident fish population using real-time reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction to examine mRNA expression levels of multiple genes in carp ( Cyprinus carpio) liver from PCB contaminated and reference sites in the Kalamazoo River. We also measured these same genes in juvenile carp exposed to dietary PCBs for 4 months. Kalamazoo River carp had significantly increased levels of cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) mRNA as did carp fed PCBs in the laboratory. No significant mRNA upregulation occurred in the specific oxidative stress genes (gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase and magnesium superoxide dismutase) and metabolic genes (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and nucleolin) examined. These data are consistent with the idea that carp from the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site are responding to PCB exposure via upregulation of CYP1A independent of activation of the oxidative stress response genes normally thought to be co-regulated with CYP1A. This review examines the state of knowledge on the phytotoxic effects of antibiotics on terrestrial crop plants and wild (non-crop) plants with the goal of evaluating differences in their sensitivity. This is important because environmental risk assessments of antibiotics currently consider their potential effects only on crop species but not wild species. Overall, we analysed 275 datasets consisting of antibiotic-plant species-endpoint combinations for germination (mg/L) and 169 datasets for plant growth (elongation and biomass) (mg/kg). EC10 and EC50 of each parameter were compared using a quotient approach, in which the geometric mean and the 5th percentile of the crop data were divided by wild data. Quotients were > 1 for elongation growth, suggesting that wild species were more sensitive than crops, while they were < 1 for biomass growth, suggesting quite the contrary. However, < 1% of the data in each dataset came from wild species, preventing definitive conclusions. Merging crop and wild data to evaluate differences in sensitivity among classes of antibiotics and plant families, we found using a linear mixed effect model and post hoc test that plants were most sensitive to phenicol and least sensitive to macrolides and tetracyclines. Further work must be conducted to gain a better understanding of the phytotoxic effects of antibiotics on terrestrial wild plants and subsequently assess whether the current approach to environmental risk assessment of antibiotics is sufficient to protect plant biodiversity. Tampa Bay is a large, urban estuary that is located in west central Florida. Although water quality conditions represent an important concern in this estuary, information from numerous sources indicates that sediment contamination also has the potential to adversely affect aquatic organisms, aquatic-dependent wildlife, and human health. As such, protecting relatively uncontaminated areas of the bay from contamination and reducing the amount of toxic chemicals in contaminated sediments have been identified as high-priority sediment management objectives for Tampa Bay. To address concerns related to sediment contamination in the bay, an ecosystem-based framework for assessing and managing sediment quality conditions was developed that included identification of sediment quality issues and concerns, development of ecosystem goals and objectives, selection of ecosystem health indicators, establishment of metrics and targets for key indicators, and incorporation of key indicators, metrics, and targets into watershed management plans and decision-making processes. This paper describes the process that was used to select and evaluate numerical sediment quality targets (SQTs) for assessing and managing contaminated sediments. These SQTs included measures of sediment chemistry, whole-sediment and pore-water toxicity, and benthic invertebrate community structure. In addition, the paper describes how the SQTs were used to develop site-specific concentration-response models that describe how the frequency of adverse biological effects changes with increasing concentrations of chemicals of potential concern. The complex nature of ocean pollution underscores the utility in identifying and characterizing a limited number of 'indicators' that enables scientists and managers to track trends over space and time. This paper introduces a special issue on indicators of marine pollution in the North Pacific Ocean and builds on a scientific session that was held at the North Pacific Marine Science Organization. The special issue highlights studies using a variety of indicators to provide insight into the identification of legacy and emerging contaminants, the ranking of priority pollutants from various sources, and the effects of contaminants on ecosystem health in the North Pacific Ocean. Examples include the use of mussels to illustrate spatial and temporal trends of a number of contaminants following the 2011 tsunami in Japan, the use of molecular marker (linear alkylbenzenes, hopanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) profiles to identify pollution sources, and the use of plastic resin pellets to illustrate spatial trends of petroleum pollution around the world. Stable isotopes were used to strengthen the utility of the Glaucous-winged gull ( Larus glaucescens) as an indicator of marine pollution. Examples also demonstrate the development and application of biomarker approaches, including gene transcripts, oxidative stress, estradiol, hatchability, and respiration and swimming behavior abnormalities, as a function of exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls, sulfur-diesel, Pinghu crude oil, galaxolide and antifouling biocides. We provide a brief review of indicators of marine pollution, identify research gaps, and summarize key findings from the articles published within the issue. This special issue represents the first compilation of research pertaining to marine pollution indicators in the North Pacific Ocean and provides guidance to inform mitigation and monitoring efforts of contaminants in the region. Oil pollution in the marine environment is an unavoidable problem due to chronic input from local sources, particularly in urban areas and oil spills. Oil pollution not only causes immediate physical damages to surrounding wildlife but also some components, including higher molecular weight PAHs, can persist in the environment for many years and pose insidious threats to the ecosystem. Long-term and nontargeted monitoring of oil pollution is important. This paper examines the ability of International Pellet Watch (IPW) for initial identification and monitoring of oil pollution by analysing PAHs and hopanes in plastic pellet samples collected globally by volunteers. PAH concentrations with the sum of 28 parent and methyl PAHs vary geographically, ranging from 0.035 to 24.4 µg/g-pellet, in line with the presence or absence of local oil pollution sources, such as oil refineries or oil spill sites. This suggests that PAHs can be used to monitor petroleum pollution in IPW. A colour-coded categorization for PAH concentrations within IPW monitoring also is established to facilitate data presentation and understanding. PAH concentrations are generally higher in Western Europe, especially around the North Sea shorelines, moderate in East Asia and North America, and lower in South East Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa. Hopane concentrations, with a smaller spatial variation (1.7-101 µg/g-pellet), showed no spatial pattern. This result and the poor correlation between hopanes and PAHs suggest that hopane concentrations alone are unsuited to identify petroleum pollution. However, hopane compositions can be used for fingerprinting sources of oil pollution. Thus, both PAHs and hopanes in IPW allow for low cost, remote monitoring of global oil pollution.
