This is a compact, well-organized book presenting a careful selection of the vast amount of information available on metabolic and endocrine physiology. When the author turns aside from a consideration of conventional knowledge and speculates, possibilities are developed in a stimulating manner. Concise figures and tabular material illustrate and document discussions. Attention is directed to major concepts, the largest being referred to by the author as "megacepts." Ideas and methods of molecular biology are developed in the chapter on hormones and protein synthesis. Sutherland's "second messenger" theory of hormone action is presented in the chapter on the adrenal medulla. The book should be of value to physicians in practice, medical students and research fellows, or other physicians starting out at the bench to explore metabolic and endocrine problems.

The Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University has been an impressive source of advances in anesthesiology, based largely on research output. To recognize the clinical acumen of the department and to honor E. M. Papper, the former chairman, a postgraduate course was held in December 1969 in which the current clinical practices of the department were described. This book is a compilation of the presentations made at that meeting with some revision and updating. The chapters discuss in some detail the way in which these practitioners of anesthesia accomplish their day-to-day work. There are several descriptions of precise techniques for anesthesia procedures providing drug dosages, specific monitoring suggestions, and the like. There are two very fine chapters on endocrine problems, namely pheochromocytoma management and hyperaldosteronism. These are helpful discussions for the practicing anesthetist.
