This paper offers a new explanation of the recent Australian wage inequality and unemployment experience. Building on a standard international trade model, it is argued that trade affects wage inequality and unemployment through changes in the bargaining power of different groups of workers in the presence of hiring and firing costs. This allows previously puzzling aspects of the trends to be explained, including the inconsistency of the existing Stolper-Samuelson trade explanation with rising relative skilled wages at the same time as rising skilled labour intensity of production. Considering differences in labour market institutions, in particular hiring and firing costs and minimum wages, allows differences between the experiences of Australia, the USA and Europe to be explained. This paper provides new rankings for Australian university economics departments for the periods 1988-2000, 1988-1994 and 1994-2000 using the ECONLIT database. We rank economics departments using two different journal ranking criteria - one based on citations and the other based on perceptions of journal quality. In addition, we provide updates on the rankings using the Towe and Wright (1995) methodology. We find that the perception-based rankings are quite different from the citation-based rankings. This paper presents evidence from two surveys to help explain the poor ratings consistently given to the teaching of economics at Australian universities. The evidence suggests that the poor ratings of economics teaching can be attributed to two related factors: inappropriate pedagogical practices and lack of rewards for allocating additional time to teaching. The survey data on pedagogy in economics consist of 205 responses from graduates from two Queensland universities. The time elapsed since graduation ranges from 1 to 10 years. The paper attempts to project the future trend of the gender wage gap in Australia up to 2031. The empirical analysis utilises the Income Distribution Survey (1996) together with Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) demographic projections. The methodology combines the ABS projections with assumptions relating to the evolution of educational attainment in order to project the future distribution of human capital skills and consequently the future size of the gender wage gap. The analysis suggests that female relative pay will continue to rise up to 2031. However, gender wage convergence will be relatively slow, with a substantial gap remaining in 2031. This paper derives analytical expressions for the revenue elasticity of consumption taxes and combined income-consumption tax systems, analogous to those familiar for income taxes. It provides measures of tax revenue elasticities which can readily be applied in practice. Analytical results suggest that, unlike income taxes, consumption tax revenues are likely to be income-inelastic in practice, and total income plus consumption tax revenue, though generally elastic, can be expected to decline over time in the absence of counterveiling fiscal reforms. The results also provide some insight into the effects on tax revenue growth (often unintended or unknown) of reforms made with other policy objectives in mind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper uses a unique survey of consumers to test several separate but inter-related hypotheses of household saving. Unit records from 17,585 Australian households are available, which enables the incorporation of a range of household characteristics that may be important factors for saving behaviour, but which are not typically available to researchers undertaking macroeconomic analyses. An ordered profit estimation method is used, and the results support the view that current incomes are perhaps the most important determinant of saving. This article focuses on the book "Drawing Relationships in Northern Italian Renaissance Art: Patronage and Theories of Invention," edited by Giancarla Periti. This book, skillfully edited by Giancarla Periti, brings together eight essays originally presented at a one-day conference held at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome in July 2000, and adds an introduction by Charles Dempsey. As is emphasized in the preface and introduction, the focus of the conference and of the papers here presented is on the Emilia Romagna and Lombardy regions of Italy. The variety of the works presented and examined is encouraging yet, at the same time, there is a feeling of the collection spreading itself too thinly, and of trying to cover too many possibilities.

Focuses on Robert (Bob) G. Gregory, an Australian economics professor who has been selected for receiving the 2001 Distinguished Fellow Award. Over the years the Distinguished Fellow Award has been made to individuals who have 'made an impact'. The type of impact has varied widely, from Trevor Swan's contributions to theory. However, rarely has the Distinguished Fellow Award been made to someone who has made such a consummate impact in many different areas. Bob Gregory has achieved excellence across the board, with respect to scholarship, public service and academic leadership. Arguably Bob Gregory has contributed as much, if not more, to scholarship within both the Australian and international economics community than any other living Australian economist. His achievements in this area can be traced to four characteristics of his work. In his early research in labor he analyzed aggregate issues of employment and unemployment (1978a), wages (1978b, 1979b), labor supply (1980) and labor market segmentation (1981). A very significant contribution (1982, 1986) provided the basis of what Snower and Lindbeck later called the 'Insider-Outsider' perspective. In recent years his interest in policy and his substantial reputation resulted in a plethora of roles as an economic adviser. The bottom line from all personal observations is that, not only is Bob a path-breaking, innovative and very talented economist, he's also very human. Thus there should be no surprises that, as well as holding him in very high esteem, members of the Australian profession regard him with the greatest affection.

This article discusses various issues related to a unique project where over 2,500 bookmarks, produced by twenty-five artists, were made available for free public distribution. The artists have produced bookmarks for free public distribution at 11 selected venues in Europe, the U.S. and Australia. For this project, each of the 25 artists kindly agreed to make an edition of 100 bookmarks using any source of artwork or literature for their inspiration. Each of the participating artists received a set of bookmarks hidden within a scooped out hardback book as thanks for their participation.

This article focuses on the book "The Italian Renaissance Imagery of Inspiration: Metaphors of Sex, Sleep, and Dreams," by Maria Ruvoldt. The book is a subtle and absorbing book. In part, it draws on an older tradition of iconographic studies in art history, but its sophisticated critical readings are clearly informed by more recent theoretical work in semiotics and gender studies. A major theme of Ruvoldt's book is how Renaissance artists came to appropriate a discourse of creativity that was originally meant to apply to philosophers, poets and religious figures. Ruvoldt initially explores the Renaissance discourse concerning creativity, which linked it with melancholy and inspiration in the form of divine furore.
