This paper tests hypotheses of independent parallel evolution of the rostrosoma among euchelicerate taxa by analyzing the microscopic anatomy and histology of the rostrosoma of Uropygi (Schizomida and Thelyphonida) and comparing it with the morphology of the snout region in other euchelicerates. The study employs analysis of multiple histological serial sections, μCT-imaging, and graphical as well as computer-based 3D reconstruction. Results of the study are that Thelyphonida and Schizomida share the same morphology of the rostrosoma. The rostrosoma of both groups contains a unique arrangement of musculature that is functionally interpreted as pre-oral suction pump. This is followed by a pharyngeal suction pump. The muscles of the pharyngeal suction pump attach to the epistome and the epipharyngeal sclerite. Neither Schizomida nor Thelyphonida possess a postcerebral suction pump as reported earlier. The microscopic anatomy of the rostrosoma of both taxa is unique and does not compare with any of the other euchelicerates, thus supporting the idea of independent evolutionary origin of the rostrosoma. Thelyphonida, Amblypygi and Scorpiones share the occurrence of a large epipharyngeal/epistomal sclerite with associated musculature, which is a feature that lines up with the Arachnopulmonata concept. A comparison with all Euchelicerata taxa shows that the snout region is formed by homologous morphological elements but the specific arrangement, additions and reductions shape the formation of the rostrosoma, so that parallel evolution of homologous parts of the arachnid ground pattern can be assumed that has formed those elements into convergent morphologies. • Uropygi and Schizomida share a complete set of pharyngeal muscles. One of the least studied eyes of any beetle taxon are those of the scarabaeoid family Passalidae. Some members of this family of around 600 species worldwide are known to have superposition eyes (Aceraius grandis; A. hikidai) while others have apposition eyes (Cylindrocaulus patalis ; Ceracupes yui). In C. yui of nearly 3 cm body length (this paper) the retinal layer is very thin and occupies approximately half of an ommatidium's total length, the latter amounting to 284 and 266 μm in the respective dorsal and ventral eye regions. The two eye regions are almost completely separated by a prominent cuticular canthus, a feature usually associated with the presence of a tracheal tapetum, a clear-zone between dioptric and light-perceiving structures and a regular array of smooth facets. In C. yui the facets are smooth (but not very regular) and a tracheal tapetum and a clear-zone are absent. The rhabdoms, formed by 8–9 retinula cells, are complicated, multilobed structures with widths and lengths of around 15 and 80 μm, respectively. The combination of some superposition and mostly apposition eye features, e.g., extensive corneal exocones, relatively small number of ommatidia, absence of a clear-zone and tracheal bush, suggest an adaptation of this species' eye to the fossorial lifestyle of C. yui , and, thus, a manifestation of the passalid eye's plasticity. • First detailed ultrastructural study of the eye of a passalid from Taiwan. • Description of a scarabaeoid beetle eye in which apposition features dominate. • Eye adaptations to accommodate the species' fossorial lifestyle. • Compromise between adaptations to protect the eye against physical damage and to retain some sensitivity. Species' mean relative head size decreases with increasing species mean body size in paper wasps, which may have important implications for biomechanics in these flying animals. Here we quantify the allometric relationship (log/log slope) of head size to body size in paper wasps. We sampled species in two genera (Agelaia and Polybia) to test whether head/body allometry was consistent among genera. Head mass/total mass relationships were significantly hypoallometric (log/log slopes ∼0.90) and statistically similar between Agelaia and Polybia. We reanalyzed previously published multi-genus data to calculate the slope of head/body allometry, and to compare two different aspects of head size: the allometry of head mass which could impact weight distribution along the longitudinal axis of the body, and the allometry of head volume which could impact fluid resistance and mobility. The multi-genus data set yielded a similar estimate for the slope of head mass allometry (∼0.90), but the slope of head volume allometry was significantly shallower (∼0.80): relative head volume increases faster than relative head mass as total size decreases. We suggest the demands of brain housing affect the greater investment in head size and head weight in smaller species. Relative brain size is greater for smaller-bodied species within clades (Haller's rule), and brain volume had a significantly lower allometric slope than both head mass and head volume. Relatively large brains may require increased relative head size in smaller-bodied species. The mandibular gland is an important exocrine gland connected to the mandibles. In ants, it plays a crucial role in alarm communication and reproduction. While the overall morphology of the mandibular gland does not vary much between ant species, significant differences exist in the ultrastructural characteristics and gland size in some reported cases. However, there have been few systematic comparative studies on this subject. In this paper, we conducted microscopic observations to analyze the morphological and ultrastructural similarities and differences of the mandibular gland in different castes of Camponotus japonicus. Our findings revealed that the mandibular glands of males were significantly larger than those of females. In terms of relative size, within the female castes the mandibular glands of minor workers were the largest. Additionally, our observations of the ultrastructure showed that secretory substances were most abundant in queens. All female castes and males showed the presence of crystalline structures in the secretory cells. The content of these biocrystals decreased from minor workers to major workers, queens, and males. In males, however, crystalline structures were rare and the most abundant substances are droplet-like secretions. The differences in morphology and ultrastructure between different castes suggest that the function of the mandibular gland varies among castes. In conclusion, our study provides insights into the morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of the mandibular gland in different castes of C. japonicus. Systematic issues regarding Plecoptera are still debated, and the molecular data seem to be unable to definitively clarify the relationships within the order. Spermatozoa are under constant evolutionary pressure, and comparative spermatology can be useful in carrying systematic and phylogenetic information. In the present paper we describe the sperm structure, using light, scanning and transmission electron and immunofluorescence microscopy, of six Euholognatha species belonging to genera not analyzed in our previous studies, i.e. Capnopsis , Amphinemura , Rhabdiopteryx , Tyrrhenoleuctra , Zwicknia and Protonemura. The spermatozoa of all the species examined are fîliform and have a flagellum characterized by an axoneme with 9 + 9+2 pattern and two mitochondrial derivatives. Their ultrastructure shows a degree of heterogeneity within the order. On the contrary, morphological features of sperm are well conserved inside a single Euholognathan family, and the species share a general family sperm model, even if different interspecific or intergeneric characters can be identified and used for systematic inferences. Among Nemouroidea, Taeniopterygidae, showing a peculiar sperm model, seems to have an isolated phylogenetic position. Nemouridae, with a mono-layered acrosome, are isolated among the remaining families, while we can hypothesize a sister taxa relationship between Leuctridae and Capniidae. The woodwasp Sirex noctilio Fabricius is a major quarantine pest that was reported in China in 2013 and mostly damages Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica. Reverse chemical ecology, which uses chemical lures to catch or block insects from mating is the classic way to control forestry pests. This indicates that insect sensilla play a crucial role in detecting external chemical and physical stimuli. Nonetheless, the categorization and distribution of sensilla on the antennae and ovipositor of S. noctilio are insufficiently specific. In this paper, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the ultrastructure of the sensilla of S. noctilio on the antenna and ovipositor. It was found that the types and distribution of sensilla on the antennae of S. noctilio male and female are consistent, and six types of sensilla are found: sensilla trichodea (ST), sensilla chaetica (SC), Böhm bristles (BB), sensilla basiconica (SB), sensilla ampullacea (SA), and contact chemoreceptors (CC). Besides, there are five types of sensilla on the female ovipositor. In addition to ST, SC and BB, two more types of sensilla are also found: sensilla cavity (SCa) and sensilla coeloconica (SCo). Through identification of the morphology and distribution of the sensilla, the functions of different sensilla in the mating and host selection mechanisms of S. noctilio are proposed, thereby establishing a foundation for S. noctilio chemical communication research. • SEM was used to analyze the morphology of the antennae and ovipositors in Sirex noctilio. • The six sensilla types found on the antennae of S. noctilio are not sexually dimorphic. • Five types of sensilla were found on female ovipositors. • The functions of different sensilla types are predicted based on their morphology and distribution. Though the transparent apposition eyes of larval stomatopod crustaceans lack most of the unique retinal specializations known from their adult counterparts, increasing evidence suggests that these tiny pelagic organisms possess their own version of retinal complexity. In this paper, we examined the structural organization of larval eyes in six species of stomatopod crustaceans across three stomatopod superfamilies using transmission electron microscopy. The primary focus was to examine retinular cell arrangement of the larval eyes and characterize the presence of an eighth retinular cell (R8), which is typically responsible for UV vision in crustaceans. For all species investigated, we identified R8 photoreceptor cells positioned distal to the main rhabdom of R1-7 cells. This is the first evidence that R8 photoreceptor cells exist in larval stomatopod retinas, and among the first identified in any larval crustacean. Considering recent studies that identified UV sensitivity in larval stomatopods, we propose that this sensitivity is driven by this putative R8 photoreceptor cell. Micro air vehicles (MAVs) have wide application prospects in environmental monitoring, disaster rescue and other civil fields because of their flexibility and maneuverability. Compared with fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) have higher energy utilization efficiency and lower cost and have attracted extensive attention from scientists. Insects have become excellent bionic objects for the study of FWMAVs due to their characteristics of low Reynolds number, low noise, hoverability, small size and light weight. By mimicking flying insects, it may be possible to create highly efficient biomimetic FWMAVs.
