More and more details of our lives are recorded and stored as part of what has been called big data. Our lives, in all their aspects, leave a digital trail that is continually updated in terms of activities. Our physical and digital lives are recorded in databases with the latest book we purchased and with our medical visits. Many of these data are open and accessible, others are owned by private companies that use them for marketing purposes. In this publication, we provide an initial introduction and justification of the usefulness of the term datacene understood as a metaphor to comprehend our current society mediated by digital data. Then we establish a classification of the contemporary artistic practices with different approaches to the use and analysis of complex data; from the creation of aestheticallypleasing visualizations of large volumes of data, to more conceptual approaches that critically analyze the volume, collection, use and marketing of data. In the last part of this publication we focus on artistic creations based on digital traces and the concept of narrative biography in the age of the datacene where we present our work Data Biography; a speculative design proposal that questions how we could write a current individual’s biography using the data captured from our digital trail on social networks, WhatsApp, emails, websites visited, Google searches, images, GPS location, and so forth.

At the beginning of the decade of the 90’s of the last century, through the commercialisation of the first infographic programs to produce digital art, the first creative proposals that renew classic narrative forms were developed. The International Museum of Electrography of Cuenca, through its artists-in-residence program and its openness to new proposals, welcomed during this historical era of Media Art artists from all over the world who experimented with these new media. One of the first to visit the MIDE was Fred Adam, a French artist and still a student at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Nantes, who carried out during his stay countless research projects in this creative field. One of the ones that had the greatest repercussion was the creation of digital narratives in interactive multimedia.Unfortunately, even today, almost thirty years later, these pioneering creations of digital art not only do not have their own historiographical account that recognises their value and contextualizes them among the artistic practices of the period between centuries, but, due to the obsolescence of the technology with which they were created, are no longer accessible. This work seeks to recognise the value of some of these pioneering works, building and telling their story while trying to recover, preserve and update their languages to make them accessible again. Only through this institutional and personal commitment to history can we recover, divulge and give access to the immense artistic heritage that generated and continues to generate the art that uses or has the new media as a reference.

The technological art emerging during the early part of the second half of the 20th century actively worked to take apart the paradigms that had supported the utopias of the old culture for over 5 centuries. This new art took over the construction and management of these utopias that had been developed for the industrial society by the artistic avant-garde during the first half of last century and replaced them with those for the digital-cybernetic society. Now, in the 21st century, we can finally analyze the utopias of technological art in historiographical terms. The article’s authors provide their experience in the theory and practice, and as curators, managers and professors of new media and art in order to produce this highly needed, though to date non-existent, critical and self-critical analysis. The necessary distance and perspective that we now have allows us to finally undertake the necessary assessment of the level and significance of these utopias of technological art, and their evolution, fall or current validity., El arte tecnológico, que surge en los albores de la segunda mitad del siglo xx, trabajó activamente en el programa de desmantelamiento de los paradigmas que sustentaron durante más de cinco siglos las utopías propias de la vieja cultura.
