Search

Colour-magnitude diagrams reveal a population of blue (hot) sub-luminous objects with respect to the main sequence. These hot sub-luminous stars are the result of evolutionary processes that require stars to expel their obscuring, hydrogen-rich envelopes to reveal the hot helium core. As such, these objects offer a direct window into the hearts of stars that are otherwise inaccessible to direct observation. We showcase MeerLICHT's capabilities of detecting faint hot subdwarfs and identifying the dominant frequency in the photometric variability of these compact hot stars, in comparison to their $Gaia$ DR3 data. We hunt for oscillations, which will be an essential ingredient for accurately probing stellar interiors in future asteroseismology. Comparative MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ colour-magnitude diagrams are presented as a way to select hot subdwarfs from our sample. A dedicated frequency determination technique is developed and applied to the selected candidates to determine their dominant variability using time-series data from MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ DR3. We explore the power of both datasets in determining the dominant frequency. Using the $g-i$ colour, MeerLICHT offers a colour-magnitude diagram that is comparable in quality to that of $Gaia$ DR3. The MeerLICHT colour-colour diagrams allow for the study of different stellar populations. The frequency analysis of MeerLICHT and $Gaia$ DR3 data demonstrates the superiority of our MeerLICHT multi-colour photometry in estimating the dominant frequency compared to the sparse $Gaia$ DR3 data. MeerLICHT's multi-band photometry leads to the discovery of high-frequency faint subdwarfs. Our MeerLICHT results are a proof-of-concept of the capacity of the BlackGEM instrument currently in the commissioning stage at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile., Accepted from A&A journal. Aims. Through the ATOMIUM project, based on an ALMA large program, we aim to present a consistent view of a sample of 17 nearby cool evolved stars (Aymptotic Giant Branch and red supergiant stars). Methods. Here we present VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL polarimetric maps obtained in the visible of 14 out of the 17 ATOMIUM sources. They were obtained contemporaneously with the ALMA high spatial resolution data. To help interpret the polarized signal, we produced synthetic maps of light scattering by dust, through 3D radiative transfer simulations with the RADMC3D code. Results. The degree of linear polarization (DoLP) observed by ZIMPOL spreads across several optical filters. We infer that it primarily probes dust located just outside of the point spread function, and in or near the plane of the sky, with a total optical depth close to unity in the line of sight, representing only a fraction of the total circumstellar dust. The maximum DoLP ranges from 0.03-0.38 depending on the source, fractions that can be reproduced by our 3D pilot models for grains composed of common dust species. The spatial structure of the DoLP shows a diverse set of shapes. Only for three sources do we note a correlation between the ALMA CO and SiO lines, which trace the gas density, and the DoLP, which traces the dust. Conclusion. The clumpiness of the DoLP and the lack of a consistent correlation between the gas and the dust location show that, in the inner circumstellar environment (CSE), dust formation occurs at very specific sites. This has potential consequences for the derived mass-loss rates and dust-to-gas ratio in the inner region of the CSE. Except for $\pi^1$~Gru and perhaps GY Aql, we do not detect interactions between the circumstellar wind and the hypothesized companions that shape the wind at larger scales. Kinematic misalignment between gas and stellar components observed in a certain fraction of galaxies. It believed to be caused by acquisition of gas from the external reservoir by major or minor mergers, accretion from cosmological filaments or circumgalactic medium, etc. We aim to constrain possible sources of the gas that forms counter-rotating component. We derived the gas-phase oxygen abundance in 69 galaxies with kinematic misalignment between gas and stellar components from MaNGA DR17 survey and compared it with the metallicity expected according to the mass-metallicity relation. We found that the oxygen abundance of the counter-rotating gas in our sample is higher than 8.2 dex that excludes significant role of inflow of pristine gas. Meanwhile, there is a significant difference in the oxygen abundance of the counter-rotating gas between red and blue galaxies. In general, the oxygen abundance is lower than expected for their stellar mass in red galaxies, but is compatible with or even higher than typical values for their stellar mass in blue galaxies. We showed that the exchange of enriched gas between galaxies is the most plausible mechanism for explaining the metallicity of counter-rotating gas components in galaxies of all masses and colors. Context: The study of high-mass stars found to be isolated in the field of the Milky Way may help to probe the feasibility of the core-accretion mechanism in the case of massive star formation. The existence of truly isolated stars may efficiently probe the possibility that individual massive stars can be born in isolation. Aims: We observed WR67a (hereafter Sapaki), an O3If* star that appears to be isolated close to the center of a well-developed giant cavity that is aptly traced by 8.0 $\mu$m hot dust emission. Methods: We acquired medium-resolution ($R=4100$) and moderate signal-to-noise ($S/N = 95$ at 4500 \r{A}) spectra for Sapaki in the range of 3800-10500 \r{A} with the Magellan Echellette (MagE) at Las Campanas Observatory. We computed the line-of-sight total extinctions. Additionally, we restricted its heliocentric distance by using a range of different estimators. Moreover, we measured its radial velocity from several lines in its spectrum. Finally, we analyzed its proper motions from Gaia to examine its possible runaway status. Results: The star has been classified as having the spectral type O3If* given its resemblance to standard examples of the class. In addition, we found that Sapaki is highly obscured, reaching a line-of-sight extinction value of $A_{V} = 7.87$. We estimated the heliocentric distance to be in the range of $d = 4-7$ kpc. We also estimated its radial velocity to be $V_{r} = -34.2 \pm 15.6$ km/s. We may also discard its runaway status solely based on its 2D kinematics. Furthermore, by analyzing proper motions and parallaxes provided by Gaia, we found only one other star with compatible measurements. Conclusions: Given its apparent non-runaway status and the absence of clustering, Sapaki appears to be a solid candidate for isolated high-mass star formation in the Milky Way., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Recently, intense emission from nebular C III] and C IV emission lines have been observed in galaxies in the epoch of reionization ($z>6$) and have been proposed as the prime way of measuring their redshift and studying their stellar populations. These galaxies might represent the best examples of cosmic reionizers, as suggested by recent low-z observations of Lyman Continuum emitting galaxies, but it is hard to directly study the production and escape of ionizing photons at such high redshifts. The ESO spectroscopic public survey VANDELS offers the unique opportunity to find rare examples of such galaxies at cosmic noon ($z\sim 3$), thanks to the ultra deep observations available. We have selected a sample of 39 galaxies showing C IV emission, whose origin (after a careful comparison to photoionization models) can be ascribed to star formation and not to AGN. By using a multi-wavelength approach, we determine their physical properties including metallicity and ionization parameter and compare them to the properties of the parent population to understand what are the ingredients that could characterize the analogs of the cosmic reionizers. We find that C IV emitters are galaxies with high photons production efficiency and there are strong indications that they might have also large escape fraction: given the visibility of C IV in the epoch of reionization this could become the best tool to pinpoint the cosmic reioinzers., 15 pages, 10 figures, resubmitted to A&A after addressing the referee comments

Aims. With the recent preliminary release of the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS), the first wide-area, ultra-low frequency observations from LOFAR were published. Our aim is to combine this data set with other surveys at higher frequencies to study the spectral properties of a large sample of radio sources. Methods. We present a new cross-matching algorithm taking into account the sizes of the radio sources and apply it to the LoLSS-PR, LoTSS-DR1, LoTSS-DR2 (all LOFAR), TGSS-ADR1 (GMRT), WENSS (WSRT) and NVSS (VLA) catalogues. We then study the number of matched counterparts for LoLSS radio sources and their spectral properties. Results. We find counterparts for 22 607 (89.5%) LoLSS sources. The remaining 2 640 sources (10.5%) are identified either as an artefact in the LoLSS survey (3.6%) or flagged due to their closeness to bright sources (6.9%). We find an average spectral index of $\alpha = -0.77 \pm 0.18$ between LoLSS and NVSS. Between LoLSS and LoTSS-DR2 we find $\alpha = -0.71 \pm 0.31$. The average spectral index is flux density independent above $S_{54} = 181$ mJy. Comparison of the spectral slopes from LoLSS--LoTSS-DR2 with LoTSS-DR2--NVSS indicates that the probed population of radio sources exhibits evidence for a negative spectral curvature., Comment: 13 pages, 22 figures and 2 tables. We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17, focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2 = -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. Mass and angular momentum are key parameters of galaxies. Their co-evolution establishes an empirical relation between the specific stellar angular momentum j* and the stellar mass M* that depends on morphology. In this work, we measure j* in a sample of 32 early type galaxies (ETGs) from the ePN.S survey, using full 2D kinematic information out to a mean 6Re. We present lambda and j* profiles. We derive the distribution of these galaxies on the total j*-M* plane and determine the ratio between the stellar j* and the specific angular momentum of the host dark matter halo. The radially extended, 2D kinematic data show that the stellar halos of ETGs do not contain large stellar mass fractions of high j*. The j*-profiles of fast-rotator ETGs are largely converged within the range of the data. For slow rotators, j* is still rising and is estimated to increase beyond 6Re by up to 40%. More than 60% of their halo angular momentum is in misaligned rotation. We find that the ePN.S ETG sample displays the well-known correlation between j*, M*, and morphology: elliptical galaxies have systematically lower j* than similar mass S0 galaxies. However, fast and slow rotators lie on the same relation within errors with the slow rotators falling at the high M* end. A power-law fit to the j*-M* relation gives a slope of 0.55+-0.17 for the S0s and 0.76+-0.23 for the ellipticals, with normalisation about 4 and 9 times lower than spirals, respectively. The estimated retained fraction of angular momentum at 10^10-10^10.5 Msun is 25% for S0s and >10% for ellipticals, and decreases by 1.5 orders of magnitude at M*~10^12 Msun. Our results show that ETGs have substantially lower j* than spiral galaxies with similar M*. Their j* must be lost during their evolution, and/or retained in the hot gas component and the satellite galaxies that have not yet merged with the central galaxy. In order to test active galactic nucleus (AGN) unification and evolutionary models, we measured the AGN clustering properties as a function of AGN obscuration defined in terms of hydrogen column density, $N_{\rm H}$. In addition to measuring the clustering of unobscured ($N_{\rm H} < 10^{22}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) and moderately obscured ($10^{22} \leq N_{\rm H} < 10^{23.5}$) AGNs, we also targeted highly obscured sources ($N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{23.5}$) up to redshifts of $z=3$. We have compiled one of the largest samples of X-ray-selected AGNs from a total of eight deep XMM/Chandra surveys. We measured the clustering as a function of both AGN obscuration and redshift using the projected two-point correlation function, $w_{\rm p}(r_{\rm p})$. We modeled the large-scale clustering signal, measured the AGN bias, $b(z, N_{\rm H})$, and interpreted it in terms of the typical AGN host dark matter halo, $M_{\rm halo}(z, N_{\rm H}$). We find no significant dependence of AGN clustering on obscuration, suggesting similar typical masses of the hosting halos as a function of $N_{\rm H}$. This result matches expectations of AGN unification models, in which AGN obscuration depends mainly on the viewing angle of the obscuring torus. We measured, for the first time, the clustering of highly obscured AGNs and find that these objects reside in halos with typical mass $\log M_{\rm halo} = 12.98_{-0.22}^{+0.17} [h^{-1} M_\odot]$ ($12.28_{-0.19}^{+0.13}$) at low $z \sim 0.7$ (high $z \sim 1.8$) redshifts. We find that irrespective of obscuration, an increase in AGN bias with redshift is slower than the expectation for a constant halo mass and instead follows the growth rate of halos, known as the passive evolution track. Models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) suggest that their circumnuclear media are complex with clumps and filaments, while recent observations hint towards polar extended structures of gas and dust, as opposed to the classical torus paradigm. The X-ray band forms an interesting window to study these circumnuclear media in great detail. In this work, we extended the radiative transfer code SKIRT with the X-ray processes that govern the broadband X-ray spectra of obscured AGN, to study the structure of AGN circumnuclear media in full 3D, based on their reflected X-ray emission. We extended the SKIRT code with Compton scattering on free electrons, photo-absorption and fluorescence by cold atomic gas, scattering on bound electrons, and extinction by dust. This includes a novel treatment of extreme-forward scattering by dust, and a detailed description of anomalous Rayleigh scattering. To verify our X-ray implementation, we performed the first dedicated benchmark of X-ray torus models, comparing five X-ray radiative transfer codes. Finally, we illustrated the 3D nature of the code by producing synthetic X-ray images and spectra of clumpy torus models. SKIRT forms a powerful new tool to model AGN circumnuclear media in full 3D from X-ray to millimetre wavelengths, and is now publicly available. In the X-ray regime, we find an excellent agreement with the simulation results of the MYTorus and RefleX codes, which validates our X-ray implementation. We find some discrepancies with other codes, which motivates the need for a robust framework that can handle non-linear 3D radiative transfer effects. The new X-ray functionalities of the SKIRT code allow for uncomplicated access to a broad suite of 3D X-ray models for AGN that can easily be tested and modified. The Milky Way as well as a majority of external galaxies possess a thick disc. However, the dynamical role of the (geometrically) thick disc on the bar formation and evolution is not fully understood. Here, we investigate the effect of thick discs in bar formation and evolution by means of a suite of N-body models of (kinematically cold) thin-(kinematically hot) thick discs. We systematically vary the mass fraction of the thick disc, the thin-to-thick disc scale length ratio as well as thick disc's scale height to examine the bar formation under diverse dynamical scenarios. Bars form almost always in our models, even in presence of a massive thick disc. The part of the bar constituted by the thick disc closely follows the overall growth and temporal evolution of the part of the bar constituted by the thin disc, only the part of the bar in the thick disc is weaker than the part of the bar in the thin disc. The formation of stronger bars is associated with a simultaneous larger loss of angular momentum and a larger radial heating. In addition, we demonstrate a preferential loss of angular momentum and a preferential radial heating of disc stars, along the azimuthal direction within the extent of the bar, in both thin and thick disc stars. For purely thick disc models (without any thin disc), the bar formation critically depends on the disc scale length and scale height. A larger scale length and/or a larger vertical scale height delays the bar formation time and/or suppresses the bar formation almost completely in thick-disc-only models. We find that the Ostriker-Peeble criterion predicts the bar instability scenarios in our models better than the Efstathiou-Lake-Negroponte criterion., 20 pages, 14 figures, 1 table (including appendix), accepted for publication in A&A

The infall and merger scenario of massive clusters in the Milky Way's potential well, as one of the Milky Way formation mechanisms, is reexamined to understand how the stars of the merging clusters are redistributed during and after the merger process using, for the first time, simulations with a high resolution concentrated in the 300 pc around the Galactic center. We adopted simulations developed in the framework of the "Modelling the Evolution of Galactic Nuclei" (MEGaN) project. We compared the evolution of representative clusters in the mass and concentration basis in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. We used the spatial distribution, density profile, and the $50\%$ Lagrange radius (half mass radius) as indicators along the complete simulation to study the evolutionary shape in physical and velocity space and the final fate of these representative clusters. Observations have shown that the effective temperature of hydrogen-free Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars is considerably lower than that of the standard model, which means that the radius of the observed H-free WR stars is several times larger than that estimated by the standard model. The envelope inflation structure (EIS) caused by the radiation luminosity being close to the Eddington luminosity in the iron opacity peak region of H-free WR stars may be the key to resolve the radius problem of H-free WR stars. We try to explain the H-free WR stars observed in the Milk Way (MW) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the He stars. Using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics code, we compute the evolution of He stars with and without MLT++ prescriptions and discuss their effects on the EIS. We have calculated the evolution of He stars using a new mass-loss rate formula and three different relative rotational velocity and compared our results with observations on Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. The low luminosity (log$(L/L_{{\odot}})\leq5.2$) H-free WR stars in the MW and the LMC can be explained by the helium giant phase in low-mass He stars, the high $X_{C}$ and $X_{O}$ in WC stars can only evolve through low-mass He stars with a rapid rotation. High-mass He stars with the EIS can explain H-free WR stars with a luminosity exceeding $10^{5.7} L_{{\odot}}$ and an effective temperature above $10^{4.7}$ K in the MW. They can also explain H-free WR stars on the right-hand side of the He zero-age main sequence in the LMC. High-mass stars with the EIS evolve into WO stars at the final evolution stage, and the shorter lifetime fraction is consistent with the small number of observed WO stars., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures 1 tables, Accepted to A&A

Time variability of astronomical sources provides crude information on their typical size and on the implied physical mechanisms. PKS1830-211 is a remarkable radio-bright lensed quasar with a foreground molecular absorber at z=0.89. Small-scale morphological changes in the core-jet structure of the quasar -- which is magnified by the lensing -- result in a varying illumination of the absorber screen, which in turn causes variations in the absorption profile. We aim to study the time variations of the system [...] in order to obtain constraints on both the quasar activity and small-scale structures in the ISM of the absorber. We used ALMA to monitor the submm continuum emission, together with the absorption spectra of the H2O and CH molecules, with 17 visits spread over six months in 2016. [...] From the continuum data, we followed the evolution of the flux density, flux-density ratio, spectral index, and differential polarization between the two lensed images of the quasar; all quantities show significant variations related to the intrinsic activity of the quasar. We propose a simple parametric model of a core plus a ballistic plasmon to account for the continuum evolution, from which we constrain a time delay of 25+/-3~days between lensed images. The spectral lines reveal significant variations in the foreground absorption. A PCA highlights apparent wavy time variations, possibly linked to the helical jet precession period of the quasar. From the deep averaged spectra towards the SW image, we detect the absorption of 13CH and estimate an abundance ratio of 12CH/13CH~150. We also measure the oxygen isotopic ratios, 16O/18O=65.3+/-0.7 and 18O/17O=11.5+/-0.5. Finally, we find a remarkable continuous shallow trough in the water absorption spanning a velocity interval of nearly 500 km/s. (abridged) Far-infrared (FIR) line emission provides key information about the gas cooling and heating due to shocks and UV radiation associated with the early stages of star formation. Gas cooling via FIR lines might, however, depend on metallicity. We aim to quantify the FIR line emission and determine the spatial distribution of the CO rotational temperature, ultraviolet (UV) radiation field, and H2 number density toward the embedded cluster Gy 3-7 in the CMa-l224 star-forming region, whose metallicity is expected to be intermediate between that of the LMC and the Solar neighborhood. By comparing the total luminosities of CO and [O I] toward Gy 3-7 with values found for low- and high-mass protostars extending over a broad range of metallicities, we also aim to identify the possible effects of metallicity on the FIR line cooling within our Galaxy. We studied SOFIA/FIFI-LS spectra of Gy 3-7 covering several FIR lines. The spatial extent of CO high-J (J>14) emission resembles that of the elongated 160 um continuum emission detected with Herschel. The CO transitions from J=14-13 to J=16-15 are detected throughout the cluster and show a median rotational temperature of 170+/-30 K on Boltzmann diagrams. Comparisons to other protostars observed with Herschel show a good agreement with intermediate-mass sources in the inner Galaxy. Assuming an origin of the [O I] and high-J CO emission in UV-irradiated C-shocks, we obtained pre-shock H2 number densities of 10^4-5 cm-3 and UV radiation field strengths of 0.1-10 Habing fields. Far-IR line observations reveal ongoing star formation in Gy 3-7, dominated by intermediate-mass Class 0/I young stellar objects. The ratio of molecular-to-atomic far-IR line emission shows a decreasing trend with bolometric luminosities of the protostars. However, it does not indicate that the low-metallicity has an impact on the line cooling in Gy 3-7., 26 pages, 23 figures

Ueta & Otsuka (2021) proposed a method, named as the "Proper Plasma Analysis Practice", to analyze spectroscopic data of ionized nebulae. The method is based on a coherent and simultaneous determination of the reddening correction and physical conditions in the nebulae. The same authors (Ueta & Otsuka 2022, UO22) reanalyzed the results of Galera-Rosillo et al. (2022, GR22) on nine of the brightest planetary nebulae in M31. They claim that, if standard values of the physical conditions are used to compute the extinction instead of their proposed method, extinction correction is underestimated by more than 50% and hence, ionic and elemental abundance determinations, especially the N/O ratio, are incorrect. Several tests were performed to assess the accuracy of the results of GR22, when determining: i) the extinction coefficient, ii) the electron temperature and density, and iii) the ionic abundances. In the latter case, N+ /H+ ionic abundance was recalculated using both H_alpha and H_beta as the reference H I emissivity. The analysis shows that the errors introduced by adopting standard values of the plasma conditions by GR22 are small, within their quoted uncertainties. On the other hand, the interstellar extinction in UO22 is found to be overestimated for five of the nine nebulae considered. This propagates into their analysis of the properties of the nebulae and their progenitors. The python notebook used to generate all the results presented in this paper are of public access on a Github repository. The results from GR22 are proven valid and the conclusions of the paper hold firmly. Although the PPAP is, in principle, a recommended practice, we insist that it is equally important to critically assess which H I lines are to be included in the determination of the interstellar extinction coefficient, and to assert that physical results are obtained for the undereddened line ratios., Accepted for publication in A&A Letter

We present new neutral hydrogen (H I) observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 2403 to determine the nature of a low-column-density cloud that was detected earlier by the Green Bank Telescope. We find that this cloud is the tip of a complex of filaments of extraplanar gas that is coincident with the thin disk. The total H I mass of the complex is 2 × 107 M⊙ or 0.6% of the total H I mass of the galaxy. The main structure, previously referred to as the 8 kpc filament, is now seen to be even more extended, along a 20 kpc stream. The kinematics and morphological properties of the filaments are unlikely to be the result of outflows related to galactic fountains. It is more likely that the 20 kpc filament is related to a recent galaxy interaction. In this context, a ∼50 kpc long stellar stream has recently been detected connecting NGC 2403 with the nearby dwarf satellite DDO 44. Intriguingly, the southern edge of this stream overlaps with the tip of the 20 kpc H I filament. We conclude that the H I anomalies in NGC 2403 are the result of a recent (∼2Gyr) interaction with DDO 44 leading to the observed filamentary complex.

*Context: The optimisation of new multiplex spectrographs (resolution, wavelength range,...), their associated surveys (choice of setup), or their parameterisation pipelines require methods that estimate which wavelengths contain useful information. *Aim: We propose a method that establishes the usefulness (purity & detectability) of an atomic line. We show two applications: a) optimising an instrument, by comparing the number of useful lines at a given setup, and b) optimising the line-list for a given setup by choosing the least blended lines detectable at different signal-to-noise ratios. *Method: The method compares pre-computed synthetic stellar spectra containing all of the elements and molecules with spectra containing the lines of specific elements alone. Then, the flux ratios between the full spectrum and the element spectrum are computed to estimate the line purities. The method identifies automatically (i) the line's central wavelength, (ii) its detectability based on its depth and a given S/N threshold and (iii) its usefulness based on the purity ratio. *Results: We compare the three WEAVE high-resolution setups (Blue: 404-465nm, Green: 473-545nm, Red: 595-685nm), and find that the Green+Red setup both allows one to measure more elements and contains more useful lines. However, there is a disparity in terms of which elements are detected, which we characterise. We also study the performances of R~20 000 and R~6000 spectra covering the entire optical range. Assuming a purity threshold of 60%, we find that the HR setup contains a much wealthier selection of lines, for any of the considered elements, whereas the LR has a "loss" of 50 to 90% of the lines even for higher S/N. *Conclusions: The method provides a diagnostic of where to focus to get the most out of a spectrograph, and is easy to implement for future instruments, or for pipelines that require line masks., Accepted for publication to A&A Code available here: https://gitlab.oca.eu/gkordo/line_selections. Context. Blob detection is a common problem in astronomy. One example is in stellar population modelling, where the distribution of stellar ages and metallicities in a galaxy is inferred from observations. In this context, blobs may correspond to stars born in-situ versus those accreted from satellites, and the task of blob detection is to disentangle these components. A difficulty arises when the distributions come with significant uncertainties, as is the case for stellar population recoveries inferred from modelling spectra of unresolved stellar systems. There is currently no satisfactory method for blob detection with uncertainties. Aims. We introduce a method for uncertainty-aware blob detection developed in the context of stellar population modelling of integrated-light spectra of stellar systems. Methods. We develop theory and computational tools for an uncertainty-aware version of the classic Laplacian-of-Gaussians method for blob detection, which we call ULoG. This identifies significant blobs considering a variety of scales. As a prerequisite to apply ULoG to stellar population modelling, we introduce a method for efficient computation of uncertainties for spectral modelling. This method is based on the truncated Singular Value Decomposition and Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling (SVD-MCMC). Results. We apply the methods to data of the star cluster M54. We show that the SVD-MCMC inferences match those from standard MCMC, but are a factor 5-10 faster to compute. We apply ULoG to the inferred M54 age/metallicity distributions, identifying between 2 or 3 significant, distinct populations amongst its stars., Comment: Revision submitted to A&A, comments welcome

The winds of massive stars have an impact on stellar evolution and on the surrounding medium. The maximum speed reached by these outflows, the terminal wind speed, is a global wind parameter and an essential input for models of stellar atmospheres and feedback. With the arrival of the ULLYSES programme, a legacy UV spectroscopic survey with HST, we have the opportunity to quantify the wind speeds of massive stars at sub-solar metallicity (in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, 0.5Z and 0.2Z) at an unprecedented scale. We empirically quantify the wind speeds of a large sample of OB stars, including supergiants, giants, and dwarfs at sub-solar metallicity. Using these measurements, we investigate trends of terminal wind speed with a number of fundamental stellar parameters, namely effective temperature, metallicity, and surface escape velocity. We empirically determined the terminal wind speed for a sample of 149 OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds either by directly measuring the maximum velocity shift of the absorption component of the Civ 1548-1550 line profile, or by fitting synthetic spectra produced using the Sobolev with exact integration method. Stellar parameters were either collected from the literature, obtained using spectral-type calibrations, or predicted from evolutionary models. We find strong trends of terminal wind speed with effective temperature and surface escape speed when the wind is strong enough to cause a saturated P Cygni profile in Civ 1548-1550. We find evidence for a metallicity dependence on the terminal wind speed proportional to Z^0.22+-0.03 when we compared our results to previous Galactic studies. Our results suggest that effective temperature rather than surface escape speed should be used as a straightforward empirical prediction of terminal wind speed and that the observed metallicity dependence is steeper than suggested by earlier works., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 8 tables. The young massive-star-forming region M17 contains optically visible massive pre-main-sequence stars that are surrounded by circumstellar disks. Such disks are expected to disappear when these stars reach the main sequence. The physical and dynamical structure of these remnant disks are poorly constrained, especially the inner regions where accretion, photo-evaporation, and companion formation and migration may be ongoing. We aim to constrain the physical properties of the inner parts of the circumstellar disks of massive young stellar objects B243 (6 Msun) and B331 (12 Msun), two systems for which the central star has been detected and characterized previously despite strong dust extinction. Two-dimensional radiation thermo-chemical modelling with ProDiMo of double-peaked hydrogen lines of the Paschen and Brackett series observed with X-shooter was used to probe the properties of the inner disks. Additionally, the dust structure was studied by fitting the optical and near-infrared spectral energy distribution. B243 features a hot gaseous inner disk with dust at the sublimation radius at 3 AU. The disk appears truncated at roughly 6.5 AU; a cool outer disk of gas and dust may be present, but it cannot be detected with our data. B331 also has a hot gaseous inner disk. A gap separates the inner disk from a colder dusty outer disk starting at up to 100 AU. In both sources the inner disk extends to almost the stellar surface. Chemistry is essential for the ionization of hydrogen in these disks. The lack of a gap between the central objects and these disks suggests that they accrete through boundary-layer accretion. This would exclude the stars having a strong magnetic field. Their structures suggest that both disks are transitional in nature, that is to say they are in the process of being cleared, either through boundary-layer accretion, photo-evaporation, or through companion activity., 18 pages, 16 figures. We present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of the young massive cluster (YMC) NGC 1569-B. The host galaxy, NGC~1569, is a dwarf irregular starburst galaxy at a distance of 3.36$\pm$0.20 Mpc. We determined the abundance ratios from the analysis of an optical integrated-light spectrum of NGC 1569-B, obtained with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. We considered different red-to-blue supergiant ratios, namely: the ratio obtained from a theoretical isochrone, the ratio obtained from a resolved colour-magnitude diagram of the YMC, and the ratio that minimises the $\chi^2$ when comparing our model spectra with the observations. We adopted the latter ratio for our resulting chemical abundances. The derived iron abundance is sub-solar with [Fe/H] = $-0.74\pm0.05$. In relation to the scaled solar composition, we find enhanced $\alpha$-element abundances, $\text{[/Fe]}=+0.25\pm$0.11, with a particularly high Ti abundance of +0.49$\pm$0.05. Other super-solar elements include $\text{[Cr/Fe]}=+0.50\pm$0.11, $\text{[Sc/Fe]}=+0.78\pm$0.20, and $\text{[Ba/Fe]}=+1.28\pm$0.14, while other Fe-peak elements are close to scaled solar abundances: ($\text{[Mn/Fe]}=-0.22\pm$0.12 and $\text{[Ni/Fe]}=+0.13\pm$0.11). The composition of NGC 1569-B resembles the stellar populations of the YMC NGC 1705-1, located in a blue compact dwarf galaxy. The two YMCs agree with regard to $\alpha$-elements and the majority of the Fe-peak elements, except for Sc and Ba, which are extremely super-solar in NGC~1569-B -- and higher than in any YMC studied so far. The blue part of the optical spectrum of a young population is still a very challenging wavelength region to analyse using IL spectroscopic studies. This is due to the uncertain contribution to the light from blue supergiant stars, which can be difficult to disentangle from turn-off stars, even when resolved photometry is available., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Context. The Gaia third Data Release (DR3) presents the first catalogue of full-sky variable Young Stellar Object (YSO) candidates observed by the Gaia space telescope during the initial 34 months of science operations. Aims. Numerous types of variable stars were classified using photometric data collected by Gaia. One of the new classes presented in the Gaia DR3 is the class of YSOs showing brightness variability. We analysed 79 375 sources classified as YSO candidates to validate their young nature and investigate the completeness and purity of the sample. Methods. We cross-matched the Gaia DR3 YSO sample with numerous catalogues from the literature, including YSO catalogues based on optical and infrared data, as well as catalogues of extragalactic sources and Galactic variable stars. YSO catalogues were used to quantify the completeness of the Gaia DR3 YSO sample, while others were inspected to calculate the contamination. Results. Among the 79 375 potential Young Stellar Object candidates published in the Gaia DR3 variable star catalogue, the majority of these objects are distributed along the line of sight of well-known Star Forming Regions and the Galactic mid-plane. We found that the contamination level is well below 1%, while the completeness is also at the percent level, taking into account that the Gaia DR3 YSO sample is based on sources that showed significant variability during the data collection period. Gaia DR3 publishes a catalogue of full-sky RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) observed during the initial 34 months of science operations, that were processed through the Specific Object Study (SOS) pipeline for Cepheids and RRLs (SOS Cep&RRL) observed by Gaia. The SOS Cep&RRL validation of DR3 candidate RRLs relies on tools that include the Period (P) G-amplitude diagram and the P-phi21 and -phi31 parameters of the G light curve Fourier decomposition, based on a sample of bona fide known RRLs (Gold Sample). The SOS processing led to a catalogue of 271779 RRLs listed in the vari_rrlyrae table of DR3. By dropping sources that clearly are contaminants, or have an uncertain classification we produce the final catalogue of SOS-confirmed DR3 RRLs containing 270905 sources (174947 fundamental mode, 93952 first overtone and 2006 double-mode RRLs) confirmed and fully characterised by the SOS Cep&RRL pipeline. They are distributed all over the sky, including 95 globular clusters and 25 Milky Way companions. RVS time series radial velocities are also published for 1096 RRLs and 799 Cepheids. Of the 270905 DR3 RRLs, 200294 are already known in the literature and 70611 are, to the best of our knowledge, new discoveries by Gaia. An estimate of the interstellar absorption is published for 142660 fundamental-mode RRLs from a relation based on the G-band amplitude and the pulsation period. Metallicities derived from the Periods and the phi31 Fourier parameters of the G-light curves are also released for 133559 RRLs. The final Gaia DR3 catalogue of confirmed RRLs almost doubles the DR2 RRLs catalogue. An increase of statistical significance, a better characterization of the RRLs pulsational and astrophysical parameters, and the improved astrometry published with Gaia EDR3, make the SOS Cep&RRL DR3 sample, the largest, most homogeneous and parameter-rich catalogue of All-Sky RRLs published so far., 42 pages, 36 figures, submitted to A&A, revised version after the referee report

The third Gaia Data Release, covering 34 months of data, includes the second Gaia catalogue of long-period variables (LPVs), with G variability amplitudes larger than 0.1 mag (5-95% quantile range). The paper describes the production and content of this catalogue, and the methods used to compute the published variability parameters and identify C-star candidates. We applied various filtering criteria to minimise contamination by other kinds of variables. The variability parameters, period and amplitude, were derived from model fits to the G-band light curves, wherever possible. C stars were identified using their molecular signature in the low-resolution RP spectra. The catalogue contains 1 720 558 LPV candidates, including 392 240 stars with published periods (ranging from 35 to1000 days) and 546 468 stars classified as C-stars candidates. Comparison with literature data (OGLE and ASAS-SN) leads to an estimated 80% of completeness. The recovery rate is about 90% for the most regular stars (typically Miras) and 60% for semi-regular and irregular ones. At the same time, the number of known LPVs is increased by a large factor with respect to the literature data, especially in crowded regions, and the contamination is estimated to be below two percents. Our C-star classification, based on solid theoretical arguments, is consistent with spectroscopically identified C stars in the literature. Caution must however be taken if the S/N ratio is small, in crowded regions or if the source is reddened by some kind of extinction. The quality and potential of the catalogue are illustrated by presenting and discussing LPVs in the solar neighbourhood, in globular clusters and in galaxies of the Local Group. This is the largest all-sky catalogue of LPVs to date with a photometric depth down to G=20 mag, providing a unique data set for research on late stages of stellar evolution., This paper is part of Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). The third release of the Gaia catalogue contains the radial velocities for 33,812,183 stars having effective temperatures ranging from 3100 K to 14,500 K. The measurements are based on the comparison of the observed RVS spectrum (wavelength coverage: 846--870 nm, median resolving power: 11,500) to synthetic data broadened to the adequate Along-Scan Line Spread Function. The additional line-broadening, fitted as it would only be due to axial rotation, is also produced by the pipeline and is available in the catalogue (field name gaia_source:vbroad). To describe the properties of the line-broadening information extracted from the RVS and published in the catalogue, as well as to analyse the limitations imposed by the adopted method, wavelength range, and instrument. We use simulations to express the link existing between the line broadening measurement provided in Gaia Data Release 3 and Vsin(i). We then compare the observed values to the measurements published by various catalogues and surveys (GALAH, APOGEE, LAMOST, ...). While we recommend being cautious in the interpretation of the vbroad measurement, we also find a reasonable global agreement between the Gaia Data Release 3 line broadening values and those found in the other catalogues. We discuss and establish the validity domain of the published vbroad values. The estimate tends to be overestimated at the lower vsini end, and at $T_\mathrm{eff}>7500\,\mathrm{K}$ its quality and significance degrade rapidly when $G_\mathrm{RVS}>10$. Context. The characteristics of the polarised radio sky are a key ingredient in constraining evolutionary models of magnetic fields in the Universe and their role in feedback processes. The origin of the polarised emission and the characteristics of the intergalactic medium on the line of sight can be investigated using large samples of polarised sources. Ancillary infrared (IR) and optical data can be used to study the nature of the emitting objects. Aims. We analyse five early science datasets from the APERture Tile in Focus (Apertif) phased array feed system to verify the polarisation capabilities of Apertif in view of future larger data releases. We aim to characterise the source population of the polarised sky in the L-Band using polarised source information in combination with IR and optical data. Methods. We use automatic routines to generate full field-of-view Q- and U-cubes and perform rotation measure (RM)-Synthesis, source finding, and cross-matching with published radio, optical, and IR data to generate polarised source catalogues. All sources were inspected individually by eye for verification of their IR and optical counterparts. Spectral energy distribution (SED)-fitting routines were used to determine photometric redshifts, star-formation rates, and galaxy masses. IR colour information was used to classify sources as active galactic nuclei (AGN) or star-forming-dominated and early- or late-type. Results. We surveyed an area of 56 deg2 and detected 1357 polarised source components in 1170 sources. The fraction of polarised sources is 10.57% with a median fractional polarisation of 4.70 ± 0.14%. We confirmed the reliability of the Apertif measurements by comparing them with polarised cross-identified NVSS sources. Average RMs of the individual fields lie within the error of the best Milky Way foreground measurements. All of our polarised sources were found to be dominated by AGN activity in the radio regime with most of them being radio-loud (79%) and of the Fanaroff-Riley (FR)II class (87%). The host galaxies of our polarised source sample are dominated by intermediate disc and star-forming disc galaxies. The contribution of star formation to the radio emission is on the order of a few percent for ≈10% of the polarised sources while for ≈90% it is completely dominated by the AGN. We do not see any change in fractional polarisation for different star-formation rates of the AGN host galaxies. Conclusions. The Apertif system is suitable for large-area high-sensitivity polarised sky surveys. The data products of the polarisation analysis pipeline can be used to investigate the Milky Way magnetic field on projected scales of several arcminutes as well as the origin of the polarised emission in AGN and the properties of their host galaxies. © ESO 2022., This research made use of Montage. Context. Understanding the conditions in which stars and stellar clusters form is of great importance. In particular, the role that stellar feedback may have is still hampered by large uncertainties. Aims. We aim to investigate the role played by ionising radiation and protostellar outflows during the formation and evolution of a stellar cluster. To self-consistently take into account gas accretion, we start with clumps of tens of parsecs in size. Methods. Using an adaptive mesh refinement code, we ran magneto-hydrodynamical numerical simulations aimed at describing the collapse of massive clumps with either no stellar feedback or taking into account ionising radiation and/or protostellar jets. Results. Stellar feedback substantially modifies the protostellar cluster properties in several ways. We confirm that protostellar outflows reduce the star formation rate by a factor of a few, although the outflows do not stop accretion and, likely enough, do not modify the final cluster mass. On the other hand, once sufficiently massive stars have formed, ionising radiation efficiently expels the remaining gas and reduces the final cluster mass by a factor of several. We found that while HII radiation and jets barely change the distribution of high density gas, the latter increases the dense gas velocity dispersion again by a factor of several in a few places. As we are starting from a relatively large scale, we found that the clusters whose mass and size are, respectively, of the order of a few 1000 M⊙ and a fraction of parsec, present a significant level of rotation. Moreover, we found that the sink particles that mimic the stars themselves tend to have rotation axes aligned with the cluster’s large-scale rotation. Finally, computing the classical Q parameter used to quantify stellar cluster structure, we infer that when jets are included in the calculation, the Q values are typical of observations, while when protostellar jets are not included, the Q values tend to be significantly lower. This is due to the presence of sub-clustering that is considerably reduced by the jets. Conclusions. Both large-scale gas accretion and stellar feedback, namely HII regions and protostellar jets, appear to significantly influence the formation and evolution of stellar clusters.

Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) contains the first release of magnitudes estimated from the integration of Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) spectra for a sample of about 32.2 million stars brighter than G_RVS~14 mag (or G~15 mag). In this paper, we describe the data used and the approach adopted to derive and validate the G_RVS magnitudes published in DR3. We also provide estimates of the G_RVS passband and associated G_RVS zero-point. We derived G_RVS photometry from the integration of RVS spectra over the wavelength range from 846 to 870 nm. We processed these spectra following a procedure similar to that used for DR2, but incorporating several improvements that allow a better estimation of G_RVS. These improvements pertain to the stray-light background estimation, the line spread function calibration, and the detection of spectra contaminated by nearby relatively bright sources. We calibrated the G_RVS zero-point every 30 hours based on the reference magnitudes of constant stars from the Hipparcos catalogue, and used them to transform the integrated flux of the cleaned and calibrated spectra into epoch magnitudes. The G_RVS magnitude of a star published in DR3 is the median of the epoch magnitudes for that star. We estimated the G_RVS passband by comparing the RVS spectra of 108 bright stars with their flux-calibrated spectra from external spectrophotometric libraries. The G_RVS magnitude provides information that is complementary to that obtained from the G, G_BP, and G_RP magnitudes, which is useful for constraining stellar metallicity and interstellar extinction. The median precision of G_RVS measurements ranges from about 0.006 mag for the brighter stars (i.e. with 3.5 < G_RVS < 6.5 mag) to 0.125 mag at the faint end. The derived G_RVS passband shows that the effective transmittance of the RVS is approximately 1.23 times better than the pre-launch estimate., 16 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. We investigate the ionizing properties of the pair of bright Lyα emitting galaxies BDF521 and BDF2195 at z = 7.012 in order to constrain their contribution to the formation of the Bremer Deep Field (BDF) ‘reionized bubble’ in which they have been shown to reside. Methods. We obtain constraints on four UV emission lines (the CIVλ1548 doublet, HeIIλ1640, the OIII]λ1660 doublet, and the CIII]λ1909 doublet) from deep VLT X-shooter observations and compare them to those available for other high-redshift objects, and to models with mixed stellar and active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission. We use this spectroscopic information, together with the photometry available in the field, to constrain the physical properties of the two objects using the spectro-photometric fitting code BEAGLE. Results. We do not detect any significant emission at the expected position of the UV lines, with 3σ upper limits of equivalent width (EW) ≲2–7 Å rest-frame. We find that the two objects have a lower CIII] emission than expected on the basis of the correlation between the Lyα and CIII] EWs. The EW limits on CIV and HeII emission exclude pure AGN templates at ∼2 − 3σ significance, and only models with a ≲40% AGN contribution are compatible with the observations. The two objects are found to be relatively young (∼20–30 Myrs) and metal-poor (≲0.3 Z⊙), with stellar masses of a few 109 M⊙. Their production rate of hydrogen ionizing photons per intrinsic UV luminosity is log(ξion*/Hz erg−1) = 25.02–25.26, consistent with values typically found in high-redshift galaxies, but more than twice lower than values measured in z > 7 galaxies with strong CIII] and/or optical line emission (≃25.6–25.7). Conclusions. The two BDF emitters show no evidence of higher-than-average ionizing capabilities and are not capable of reionizing their surroundings by their own means, under realistic assumptions of the escape fraction of ionizing photons. Therefore, a dominant contribution to the formation of the reionized bubble must have been provided by fainter companion galaxies. The capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope will be needed for spectroscopic confirmation of these objects.

X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are intense repeating soft X-ray bursts from the nuclei of nearby galaxies. Their physical origin is still largely unconstrained, and several theoretical models have been proposed to date. We present here results from a recent XMM-Newton observation of GSN 069, the galactic nucleus where QPEs were first discovered. After about two years of absence, QPEs have reappeared in GSN 069, and we detect two consecutive QPEs separated by a much shorter recurrence time than ever before. Moreover, their intensities and peak temperatures are remarkably different, a novel addition to the QPE phenomenology. We study the QPE spectral properties from all XMM-Newton observations assuming QPEs to either represent an additional emission component superimposed on that from the disc, or the transient evolution of the disc emission itself. In the former scenario, QPEs are consistent with black-body emission from a region that expands by a factor of 2-3 during the individual QPE evolution with radius of the order of that of the Sun at QPE peak. In the alternative non-additive scenario, QPEs originate from a region with an area 6-30 times smaller than the quiescent state X-ray emission, with the smallest regions corresponding to the hottest and most luminous eruptions. The QPE reappearance reveals that eruptions are only present below a quiescent luminosity threshold corresponding to an Eddington ratio of the order of 0.4 for a one million solar masses black hole. The disappearance of QPEs above threshold is most likely driven by the ratio of QPE to quiescence temperatures approaching unity at high quiescent luminosity, making QPE detection challenging, if not impossible, above threshold. Recent evolutionary computations predict that a few percent of massive OB stars in binary systems should have a dormant BH companion. Despite several reported X-ray quiet OB+BH systems over the last couple of years, finding them with certainty remains challenging. These have great importance as they can be gravitational wave (GW) source progenitors, and are landmark systems in constraining supernova kick physics. This work aims to characterise the hidden companions to the single-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) in the B star population of the young open Galactic cluster NGC 6231 to find candidate systems for harbouring compact object companions. With the orbital solutions for each SB1 previously constrained, we applied Fourier spectral disentangling to multi-epoch optical VLT/FLAMES spectra of each target to extract a potential signature of a faint companion, and to identify newly disentangled double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). For targets where the disentangling does not reveal any signature of a stellar companion, we performed atmospheric and evolutionary modelling on the primary to obtain constraints on the unseen companion. Seven newly classified SB2 systems with mass ratios down to near 0.1 were identified. From the remaining targets, for which no faint companion could be extracted from the spectra, four are found to have companion masses in the predicted mass ranges of neutron stars (NSes) and BHes. Two of these have companion masses between 1 and 3.5 $M_{\odot}$, making them potential hosts of NSes (or lower mass main sequence stars). The other two are between 2.5 to 8 $M_{\odot}$ and 1.6 and 26 $M_{\odot}$, respectively, and so are identified as candidates for harbouring BH companions. We report the identification of very massive stars (VMS; mass $> 100$\,\msun) that may be segregated in the center of the young massive star cluster at $z$=2.37 hosted in the lensed galaxy called {\tt Sunburst} galaxy. This result is based on two pieces of evidence: (1) VLT/MUSE spectra of several multiple images of the same star cluster show key spectral signatures of VMS, such as the \heii\ broad emission, \nivblue\ emission, and an \niv\ P-Cygni profile. In particular, \heii\ is broad ($\sim1610\pm300$ \kms), with an equivalent width of 3\AA,\ and asymmetric profile. These features require an extremely young ($\sim2.5$ Myr) stellar population component in which the masses of the stars exceed 100~\msun. When a Salpeter initial mass function and BPASS models for normal massive stars are assumed, the observed spectral features require $\sim$400 VMS. (2) The same star cluster is detected at a signal-to-noise ratio of~$\sim100$ in the Lyman continuum domain ($\lambda < 900$\AA). The Lyman continuum emission emerges from a region with a radius that is at least twice smaller than what is observed at 1700\AA~(independently of magnification) and is located in the center of the cluster. After delensing, the effective radii in absolute scales are R$_{\tt eff}[{\tt LyC}]\sim4.7 \pm 1.5$ pc and R$_{\tt eff}[1700]= 7.8 \pm 1.4$ pc. The Lyman continuum radiation is mainly produced by hot and massive stars, which implies that their spatial distribution (including that of VMS) is preferentially more confined in the central parts of the cluster. Approximately 400 VMS hosted by a cluster of $\sim 10^7$ \msun\ produce $\sim$15\% of the escaping Lyman continuum photons, and the remaining photons are produced by other massive early-type stars., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to publication in A&A

Reconstructing how all the stellar components of the Galaxy formed and assembled over time, by studying the properties of the stars which make it, is the aim of Galactic archeology. In these last years, thanks to the launch of the ESA Gaia astrometric mission, and the development of many spectroscopic surveys, we are for the first time in the position to delve into the layers of the past of our galaxy. Globular clusters (GCs) play a fundamental role in this research field since they are among the oldest stellar systems in the Milky Way (MW) and so bear witness of its entire past. In the recent years, there have been several attempts to constrain the nature of clusters (accreted or formed in the MW itself) through the analysis of kinematic spaces and to reconstruct from this the properties of the accretions events experienced by the MW through time. This work aims to test a widely-used assumption about the clustering of the accreted populations of GCs in the integrals of motions space. We analyze a set of dissipation-less N-body simulations that reproduce the accretion of one or two satellites with their GC population on a MW-type galaxy. Our results demonstrate that a significant overlap between accreted and "kinematically-heated" in-situ GCs is expected in kinematic spaces, for mergers with mass ratios of 1:10. In contrast with standard assumptions made in the literature so far, we find that accreted GCs do not show dynamical coherence, that is they do not cluster in kinematic spaces. In addition, GCs can also be found in regions dominated by stars which have a different origin (i.e. different progenitor). This casts doubt on the association between GCs and field stars that is generally made in the literature to assign them to a common origin. We present ALMA CO(1-0) observations of the nearby LIRG galaxy pair IRAS05054+1718 with a new analysis of X-ray data collected between 2012 and 2021 using NuSTAR, Swift, and XMM-Newton. The western component of the pair, NED01, hosts a Seyfert 1.9 nucleus launching a powerful X-ray UFO. Our X-ray spectral analysis suggests the UFO could be variable or multi-component in velocity and constrains its momentum flux to $\dot p^{X-ray}_{out} \sim (4\pm2)\times 10^{34}$ gcms$^{-2}$. ALMA CO(1-0) observations include also the eastern component of the pair, a LIRG with no clear evidence for an AGN. We study the CO(1-0) kinematics in the two galaxies using the 3D-BAROLO code. In both sources, we can model the bulk of the CO(1-0) emission with rotating disks and, after subtracting the best-fit models, we detect compact residual emission at S/N=15 within $\sim3$kpc from the centre. A molecular outflow in NED01, if present, cannot be brighter than such residuals, implying an upper limit on its outflow rate of $\dot{M}^{mol}_{out} \lesssim 19\pm14~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ and on its momentum rate of $\dot p^{mol}_{out} \lesssim (2.7\pm2.4) \times 10^{34}$gcms$^{-1}$. Combined with the revised energetics of the X-ray wind, we derive an upper limit on the momentum rate ratio of $\dot{p}^{mol}_{out}/\dot{p}^{X-ray}_{out}, Accepted by A&A

Dusty magnetized structures observable in the far-infrared (FIR) at high Galactic latitudes are ubiquitous and found to be closely related to HI filaments with coherent velocity structures. Considering dimensionless morphological characteristics based on Minkowski functionals, we determine the distribution of filamentarities $F$ and aspect ratios $A$ for these structures. Our data are based on Planck FIR and HI4PI HI observations. Filaments have previously been extracted by applying the Hessian operator. We trace individual filamentary structures along the plane of the sky and determine $A$ and $F$. Filaments in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) are seldom isolated structures, but are rather part of a network of filaments with a well-defined, continuous distribution in $A$ and $F$. This distribution is self-replicating, and the merger or disruption of individual filamentary structures leads only to a repositioning of the filament in $A$ and $F$ without changing the course of the distribution. FIR and HI filaments identified at high Galactic latitudes are a close match to model expectations for narrow filaments with approximately constant widths. This distribution is continuous without clear upper limits on the observed aspect ratios. Filaments are associated with enhanced column densities of CO-dark $H_2$. Radial velocities along the filaments are coherent and mostly linear with typical dispersions of $\Delta v_{\mathrm{LSR}} = 5.24 $ km/s. The magnetic field strength in the diffuse turbulent ISM scales with hydrogen volume density as $B \propto n_{\mathrm{H}}^{0.58} $. At high Galactic latitudes, we determine an average turbulent magnetic field strength of $\langle \delta B \rangle = 5.3 ~\mu$G and an average mean strength of the magnetic field in the plane of the sky of $\langle B_{\mathrm{POS}} \rangle = 4.4 ~\mu$G., Comment: 22 pages, 30 figures

The growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) through merging has long been predicted but its detection remains elusive. However, a promising target has been discovered in the Seyfert-1 galaxy J1430+2303. If a binary system truly lies at the center of J1430+2303, the usual symmetry expected from pole-on views in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) responsible for the observed low ($\le$ 1\%) optical linear polarization in the continuum of these objects is expected to be broken. This should lead to higher-than-usual polarization degrees, together with time-dependent variations of the polarization signal. We used the specialized photopolarimeters RoboPol mounted on the 1.3m telescope at the Skinakas Observatory and the Alhambra Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (ALFOSC) mounted on the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at the "Roque de los Muchachos" Observatory to measure the B-, V-, R-, and I-band polarization of J1430+2303. Observations were complemented using the FORS2 spectropolarimeter mounted on the VLT to acquire 3500 -- 8650 Angs polarized spectra. We compared our set of observations to Monte Carlo radiative-transfer predictions to look for the presence of a SMBH binary. The observed linear continuum polarization of J1430+2303 in the V and R bands is $\sim$ 0.4\% with an associated polarization angle of slightly larger than 0$^\circ$. We detected no significant changes in polarization or photometry between May, June, and July of 2022. In addition, there is no significant difference between the polarization of H$\alpha$ and the polarization of the continuum. A single SMBH at the center of an AGN model is able to reproduce the observed spectrum and polarization, while the binary hypothesis is rejected with a probability of $\sim$85\%., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Methanol is the most complex molecule securely identified in interstellar ices and is a key chemical species for understanding chemical complexity in astrophysical environments. Important aspects of the methanol ice photochemistry are still unclear such as the branching ratios and photo-dissociation cross-sections at different temperatures and irradiation fluxes. This work aims at a quantitative agreement between laboratory experiments and astrochemical modelling of the CH3OH ice UV photolysis. This work also allows us to better understand which processes govern the methanol ice photochemistry present in laboratory experiments. We use ProDiMo to simulate the conditions of laboratory measurements. The simulations start with simple chemistry consisting only of methanol ice and helium to mimic the residual gas in the experimental chamber. A surface chemical network enlarged by photo-dissociation reactions is used to study the chemical reactions within the ice. Additionally, different surface chemistry parameters (surface competition, tunnelling, thermal diffusion and reactive desorption) are adopted to check those that reproduce the experimental results. The chemical models with ProDiMo can reproduce the methanol ice destruction via UV photodissociation at temperatures of 20, 30, 50 and 70 K as observed in the experiments. We note that the results are sensitive to different branching ratios after photolysis and to the mechanisms of reactive desorption. In the simulations of a molecular cloud at 20 K, we observed an increase in the methanol gas abundance of one order of magnitude, with a similar decrease in the solid-phase abundance. Comprehensive astrochemical models provide new insights into laboratory experiments as the quantitative understanding of the processes that govern the reactions within the ice. The goal of this study is to reconstruct the evolution and the dust formation processes during the final AGB phases of a sample of carbon-rich, post-AGB Galactic stars, with particular attention to the determination of the past mass-loss history. We study the IR excess of sources classified as single stars by means of dust formation modelling where dust grains form and grow in a static wind and expand from the surface of the star. The method is applied to various evolutionary stages of the final AGB phase of stars with different masses and metallicities. The detailed analysis of the SED of the sources investigated, which included the derivation of the luminosities and the dust properties, is used to infer information on mass loss, efficiency of dust formation, and wind dynamics. Aims. We address the problem of young stellar objects that are found too far away from possible star formation sites. Different mechanisms have been proposed before to explain this unexpected circumstance. The idea of high-velocity protostars is one of these mechanisms, although observational support is not always easy to obtain. We aim to shed light on this issue after the serendipitous discovery of a related stellar system. Methods. Following the inspection of archival infrared data, a peculiar anonymous star was found that apparently heads a long tail that resembles a wake-like feature. We conducted a multiwavelength analysis including photometry, astrometry, and spectroscopy. Together with theoretical physical considerations, this approach provided a reasonable knowledge of the stellar age and kinematic properties, together with compelling indications that the extended feature is indeed the signature of a high-velocity, or runaway, newborn star. Results. Our main result is the discovery of a low-mass young stellar object that fits the concept of a runaway T-Tauri star that was hypothesized several decades ago. In this peculiar star, nicknamed UJT-1, the interaction of the stellar wind with the surrounding medium becomes extreme. Analyzing resolved stellar populations across the disk of a galaxy can provide unique insights into how that galaxy assembled its stellar mass over its lifetime. Previous work at ~1 kpc resolution has already revealed common features in the mass buildup (e.g., inside-out growth of galaxies). However, even at approximate kpc scales, the stellar populations are blurred between the different galactic morphological structures such as spiral arms, bars and bulges. Here we present a detailed analysis of the spatially resolved star formation histories (SFHs) of 19 PHANGS-MUSE galaxies, at a spatial resolution of ~100 pc. We show that our sample of local galaxies exhibits predominantly negative radial gradients of stellar age and [Z/H], consistent with previous findings, and a radial structure that is primarily consistent with local star formation, and indicative of inside-out formation. In barred galaxies, we find flatter [Z/H] gradients along the semi-major axis of the bar than along the semi-minor axis, as is expected from the radial mixing of material along the bar. In general, the derived assembly histories of the galaxies in our sample tell a consistent story of inside-out growth, where low-mass galaxies assembled the majority of their stellar mass later in cosmic history than high-mass galaxies. We also show how stellar populations of different ages exhibit different kinematics, with younger stellar populations having lower velocity dispersions than older stellar populations at similar galactocentric distances, which we interpret as an imprint of the progressive dynamical heating of stellar populations as they age. Finally, we explore how the time-averaged star formation rate evolves with time, and how it varies across galactic disks. Recent work has suggested that black holes (BHs) could be cosmologically coupled to the accelerated expansion of the universe, potentially becoming a candidate for dark energy. This would imply BH mass growth following the cosmological expansion, with the masses of individual BHs growing as $M_{\rm BH}\propto (1+z)^3$. In this letter, we discuss the binary systems Gaia BH1 and Gaia BH2, which contain $\sim 9\,M_{\odot}$ BHs orbited by $\sim 1\,M_{\odot}$ stars in widely-separated orbits. The ages of both systems can be constrained by the properties of the luminous stars. If BH masses are indeed growing as $(1+z)^3$, the masses of both BHs at formation would have been significantly smaller than today. We find a 77% probability that the mass of the BH in Gaia BH2 would have been below $2.2M_\odot$ at formation. This is below the classical Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov limit, though it is not yet clear if BHs subject to cosmological coupling should obey this limit. For Gaia BH1, the same probability is 70%. This analysis is consistent with results from two BHs in the globular cluster NGC3201, but unlike the NGC3201 BHs, the Gaia BHs have well-constrained inclinations and thus firm upper mass limits. The origin of phosphorus, one of the essential elements for life on Earth, is currently unknown. Prevalent models of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) underestimate the amount of P compared to observations. The recently discovered P-rich ([P/Fe] > 1 dex) and metal-poor giants further challenge current theories on stellar nucleosynthesis. Since the observed stars are low-mass giants, our primary goal is to find clues on their progenitor. By increasing the number of known P-rich stars, we aim to narrow down a reliable chemical abundance pattern and to place robust constraints on the responsible nucleosynthetic mechanism. In the long term, identifying the progenitor of the P-rich stars may contribute to the search for the source of P in our Galaxy. We performed a detailed chemical abundance analysis based on the H-band spectra from APOGEE-2 (DR17). Employing the BACCHUS code, we measured the abundances of 13 elements in the sample, which is mainly composed of a recent collection of Si-enhanced giants. We also analyzed the orbital motions and compared the abundance results to possible nucleosynthetic formation scenarios, and also to detailed GCE models. We enlarged the sample of confirmed P-rich stars from 16 to 78 giants, which represents the largest sample of P-rich stars to date. Significant enhancements in O, Al, Si and Ce, as well as systematic correlations among the elements, unveil the chemical fingerprint of the P-rich stars. The high Mg and C+N found in some of the P-rich stars with respect to P-normal stars is not confirmed over the full sample. Strikingly, the strong over-abundance in the $\alpha$-element Si is accompanied by normal Ca and S abundances. Our analysis of the orbital motion showed that the P-rich stars do not belong to a specific sub-population. Recently multiscale imaging approaches such as DoG-HiT were developed to solve the VLBI imaging problem and showed a promising performance: they are fast, accurate, unbiased and automatic. We extend the multiscalar imaging approach to polarimetric imaging, reconstructions of dynamically evolving sources and finally to dynamic polarimetric reconstructions. These extensions (mr-support imaging) utilize a multiscalar approach. The time-averaged Stokes I image is decomposed by a wavelet transform into single subbands. We use the set of statistically significant wavelet coefficients, the multiresolution support, computed by DoG-HiT as a prior in a constrained minimization manner: we fit the single-frame (polarimetric) observables by only varying the coefficients in the multiresolution support. The EHT is a VLBI array imaging supermassive black holes. We demonstrate on synthetic data that mr-support imaging offers ample regularization and is able to recover simple geometric dynamics at the horizon scale in a typical EHT setup. The approach is relatively lightweight, fast and largely automatic and data driven. The ngEHT is a planned extension of the EHT designed to recover movies at the event horizon scales of a supermassive black hole. We benchmark the performance of mr-support imaging for the denser ngEHT configuration demonstrating the major improvements the additional ngEHT antennas will bring to dynamic, polarimetric reconstructions. Current and upcoming instruments offer the observational possibility to do polarimetric imaging of dynamically evolving structural patterns with highest spatial and temporal resolution. State-of-the-art dynamic reconstruction methods can capture this motion with a range of temporal regularizers and priors. Energy redistribution after a chemical reaction is one of the few mechanisms to explain the diffusion and desorption of molecules which require more energy than the thermal energy available in quiescent molecular clouds (10 K). This energy distribution can be important in phosphorous hydrides, elusive yet fundamental molecules for interstellar prebiotic chemistry. We studied the reaction dynamics of the \ce{P + H -> PH} reaction on amorphous solid water, a reaction of astrophysical interest, using \emph{ab-initio} molecular dynamics with atomic forces evaluated by a neural network interatomic potential. We found that the exact nature of the initial phosphorous binding sites is less relevant for the energy dissipation process because the nascent PH molecule rapidly migrates to sites with higher binding energy after the reaction. Non-thermal diffusion and desorption-after-reaction were observed and occurred early in the dynamics, essentially decoupled from the dissipation of the chemical reaction energy. From an extensive sampling of reactions on sites, we constrained the average dissipated reaction energy within the simulation time (50 ps) to be between 50 and 70 %. Most importantly, the fraction of translational energy acquired by the formed molecule was found to be mostly between 1 and 5 %. Including these values, specifically for the test cases of 2% and 5% of translational energy conversion, in astrochemical models, reveals very low gas-phase abundances of PH$_{x}$ molecules and reflects that considering binding energy distributions is paramount for correctly merging microscopic and macroscopic modelling of non-thermal surface astrochemical processes. Finally, we found that PD molecules dissipate more of the reaction energy. Which galaxies in the general population turn into active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is a keystone of galaxy formation and evolution. Thanks to SRG/eROSITA's contiguous 140 square degree pilot survey field, we constructed a large, complete, and unbiased soft X-ray flux-limited ($F_X>6.5\times 10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$) AGN sample at low redshift, $0.05, Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. High-redshift galaxies are expected to be more turbulent than local galaxies because of their smaller size and higher star formation and thus stronger feedback from star formation, frequent mergers events, and gravitational instabilities. However, this scenario has recently been questioned by the observational evidence of a few galaxies at z~4-5 with a gas velocity dispersion similar to what is observed in the local population. Our goal is to determine whether galaxies in the first Gyrs of the Universe have already formed a dynamically cold rotating disk similar to the local counterparts. We studied the gas kinematic of 22 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z > 5 and determined their dynamical state by estimating the ratio of the rotational velocity and of the gas velocity dispersion. We mined the ALMA archive and exploited the [CII] and [OIII] observations to perform a kinematic analysis of the cold and warm gas of z>5 main-sequence galaxies. The gas kinematics of the high-z galaxies is consistent within the errors with rotating but turbulent disks. We infer a velocity dispersion that is systematically higher by 4 times than the local galaxy population and the z~5 dust-obscured galaxies reported in the literature. The difference between our results and those reported at similar redshift can be ascribed to the systematic difference in the galaxy properties in the two samples: the disks of massive dusty galaxies are dynamically colder than the disks of dust-poor galaxies. The comparison with the theoretical predictions suggests that the main driver of the velocity dispersion in high-z galaxies is the gravitational energy that is released by the transport of mass within the disk. The formation process of fossil groups (FGs) is still under debate, and, because of their relative rarity, large samples of such objects are still missing. Aims. The aim of the present paper is to increase the sample of known FGs, to analyse the properties of their brightest group galaxies (BGGs), and to compare them with a control sample of non-FG BGGs. Methods. We extracted a sample of 87 FG and 100 non-FG candidates from a large spectroscopic catalogue of haloes and galaxies. For all the objects with data available in UNIONS (initially the Canada France Imaging Survey, CFIS) in the u and r bands, and/or in an extra r-band processed to preserve all low-surface-brightness features (rLSB), we performed a 2D photometric fit of the BGG with GALFIT with one or two Sérsic components. We also analysed how the subtraction of the intracluster light (ICL) contribution modifies the BGG properties. From the SDSS spectra available for the BGGs of 65 FGs and 82 non-FGs, we extracted the properties of their stellar populations with Firefly. To complement our study, and in order to provide a detailed illustration of the possible origin of emission lines in the FG BGGs, involving the presence or absence of an AGN, we investigated the origin of the emission lines in a nearby FG that is dominated by the NGC 4104 galaxy. Results. Morphologically, a single Sérsic profile can fit most objects in the u band, while two Sérsics are needed in the r and rLSB bands, both for FGs and non-FGs. Non-FG BGGs cover a larger range of Sérsic index n. FG BGGs follow the Kormendy relation (mean surface brightness versus effective radius) previously derived for almost 1000 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), while the majority of non-FGs BGGs are located below this relation, with fainter mean surface brightnesses. This suggests that FG BGGs have evolved similarly to BCGs, and non-FG BGGs have evolved differently from both FG BGGs and BCGs. All the above properties can be strongly modified by the subtraction of the ICL contribution. Based on spectral fitting, the stellar populations of FG and non-FG BGGs do not differ significantly. Conclusions. FG and non-FG BGGs differ from one another in terms of their morphological properties and Kormendy relation, suggesting they have had different formation histories. Unusually high N/O abundance ratios were recently reported for a very compact, intensively star-forming object GN-z11 at $z=10.6$ from JWST/NIRSpec observations. We present an empirical comparison with the C, N, and O abundance ratios in Galactic globular clusters (GCs) over a large metallicity range. We show that hot hydrogen-burning nucleosynthesis within supermassive stars (SMS) formed through runaway collisions can consistently explain the observed abundances ratio in GN-z11 and in GCs. This suggests that a proto-globular cluster hosting a SMS could be at the origin of the strong N-enrichment in GN-z11. Our model predicts the behavior of N/O, C/O, and Ne/O ratios as a function of metallicity, which can be tested if high-$z$ objects similar to GN-z11 are detected with JWST in the future. Further studies and statistics will help differentiate the proto-GC scenario from the Wolf-Rayet scenario that we quantify with a population synthesis model, and shed more light on this peculiar object., Comment: Accepted by A&A Letters (revised version; in press)

We acknowledge the usage of the HyperLeda database ( http://leda.univ-lyon1.fr )., At the highest stellar masses (log(M*) ≳ 11.5 M⊙), only a small fraction of galaxies are disk-like and actively star-forming objects. These so-called ‘super spirals’ are ideal objects to better understand how galaxy evolution proceeds and to extend our knowledge about the relation between stars and gas to a higher stellar mass regime. We present new CO(1–0) data for a sample of 46 super spirals and for 18 slightly lower-mass (log(M*) > 11.0 M⊙) galaxies with broad HI lines – HI fast-rotators (HI-FRs). We analyze their molecular gas mass, derived from CO(1–0), in relation to their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, and compare the results to values and scaling relations derived from lower-mass galaxies. We confirm that super spirals follow the same star-forming main sequence (SFMS) as lower-mass galaxies. We find that they possess abundant molecular gas (mean redshift-corrected molecular gas mass fraction (log(fmol, zcorr) = −1.36 ± 0.02), which lies above the extrapolation of the scaling relation with stellar mass derived from lower-mass galaxies, but within the relation between fmol and the distance to the SFMS. The molecular gas depletion time, τdep = Mmol/SFR, is higher than for lower-mass galaxies on the SFMS (τdep = 9.30 ± 0.03, compared to τdep = 9.00 ± 0.02 for the comparison sample) and seems to continue an increasing trend with stellar mass. HI-FR galaxies have an atomic-to-molecular gas mass ratio that is in agreement with that of lower-mass galaxies, indicating that the conversion from the atomic to molecular gas proceeds in a similar way. We conclude that the availability of molecular gas is a crucial factor to enable star formation to continue and that, if gas is present, quenching is not a necessary destiny for high-mass galaxies.
