Context. Giant (> 100 kpc) nebulae associated with active galaxies provide rich information about the circumgalactic medium around galaxies, its link with the interstellar medium of the hosts, and the mechanisms involved in their evolution. Aims. We have studied the giant nebula associated with the Teacup (z = 0.085) quasar based on VLT MUSE integral field spectroscopy to investigate whether the well-known giant (∼10 kpc) active galactic nucleus (AGN) -induced outflow has an impact on the distribution of heavy elements in and outside the host galaxy. Methods. We have mapped the oxygen and nitrogen gas relative abundances (O/H and N/O) in two spatial dimensions across the giant nebula and within the galaxy by means of comparing emission line ratios with photoionisation model predictions. Results. The widely studied AGN-driven outflow responsible for the ∼10 kpc ionised bubble is enhancing the gas metal abundance up to ∼10 kpc from the AGN. O/H is solar or slightly higher at the edges of the bubble, in comparison with the subsolar abundances across the rest of the nebula median (O/H ∼0.63 (O/H)⊙). Conclusions. This study offers an in-depth analysis of the kinematic behavior of ionized gas in IZw18, a galaxy notable for its extremely low metallicity and close proximity, utilizing data from MEGARA/GTC. We explored the structure and dynamics of the galaxy through Hα line profiles, applying single and double Gaussian component fittings to create detailed maps of the luminosity, velocity, and velocity dispersion in the main body (MB) and halo regions. Additionally, we retrieved integrated spectra from various galactic regions to achieve a higher signal-to-noise ratio. In the MB, a rotational pattern is evident, yet a secondary, more complex kinematic pattern emerges from the double-component fitting, which is further enriched by the identification of a very broad component. Distinguished by a full width at half maximum of nearly 2000 km s−1 and a wide spatial extension, this component suggests a high-energy outflow and points toward large-scale, nonlocalized sources of high kinetic energy. Additionally, the observed significant velocity differences between the narrow and very broad components imply that these gases may occupy distinct spatial regions. This is potentially explained by high-density gas near the origin of the kinematic input, acting as a "wall" that reflects back the momentum of the gas. Regarding the halos, while the NE halo exhibits a tranquil state with low velocity dispersions, the SW halo presents higher velocities and more complex kinematics, indicative of diverse dynamic interactions. The identification of the very broad component across the MB and the high kinematic complexity in all regions of the galaxy points toward a scenario of widespread and subtle turbulent motion. This nuanced understanding of the kinematic behavior in IZw18, including the interplay of different gas components and the influence of internal structures, enhances our comprehension of the dynamics in blue compact dwarf galaxies. We present the discovery of HLock01-LAB, a luminous and large Lyα nebula at z = 3.326. Medium-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopic observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveal extended emission in the Lyα 1215 Å, C IV 1550 Å, and He II 1640 Å lines over ∼100 kpc, and a total luminosity LLyα = (6.4 ± 0.1)×1044 erg s−1. HLock01-LAB presents an elongated morphology aligned with two faint radio sources contained within the central ∼8 kpc of the nebula. The radio structures are consistent with faint radio jets or lobes of a central galaxy, whose spectrum shows nebular emission characteristic of a type-II active galactic nucleus (AGN). The continuum emission of the AGN at short wavelengths is however likely dominated by stellar emission of the host galaxy, for which we derive a stellar mass M* ≃ 2.3 × 1011 M⊙. Our kinematic analysis shows that the ionized gas is perturbed almost exclusively in the inner region between the radio structures, probably as a consequence of jet–gas interactions, whereas in the outer regions the ionized gas appears more quiescent. The detection of extended emission in C IV and C III] indicates that the gas within the nebula is not primordial. Feedback may have enriched the halo at at least 50 kpc from the nuclear region. Using rest-frame UV emission-line diagnostics, we find that the gas in the nebula is likely heated by the AGN. Nevertheless, at the center of the nebula we find extreme emission line ratios of Lyα/C IV ∼60 and Lyα/He II ∼80, one of the highest values measured to date, and well above the standard values of photoionization models (Lyα/He II ∼30 for case B photoionization). Our data suggest that jet-induced shocks are likely responsible for the increase of the electron temperature and, thus, the observed Lyα enhancement in the center of the nebula. This scenario is further supported by the presence of radio structures and perturbed kinematics in this region. The large Lyα luminosity in HLock01-LAB is likely due to a combination of AGN photoionization and jet-induced shocks, highlighting the diversity of sources of energy powering Lyα nebulae. Future follow-up observations of HLock01-LAB will help to reveal the finer details of the excitation conditions of the gas induced by jets and to investigate the underlying cooling and feedback processes in this unique object. Context. Only a few open clusters are as important for the study of stellar and substellar objects, and their formation and evolution, as the young σ Orionis cluster. However, a complete spectroscopic characterisation of its whole stellar population is still missing. Aims. We filled most of that gap with a large spectroscopic and astrometric survey of targets towards σ Orionis. Eventually, it will be one of the open clusters with the lowest proportion of interlopers and the largest proportion of confirmed cluster members with known uncontrovertible youth features. Methods. We acquired 317 low-resolution optical spectra with the Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (IDS) at the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We measured equivalent widths of Li I, Hα, and other key lines from these spectra, and determined spectral types. We complemented this information with Gaia DR2 astrometric data and other features of youth (mid-infrared excess, X-ray emission) compiled with Virtual Observatory tools and from the literature. Results. Of the 168 observed targets, we determined for the first time spectral types of 39 stars and equivalent widths of Li I and Hα of 34 and 12 stars, respectively. We identified 11 close (ρ ≲ 3 arcsec) binaries resolved by Gaia, of which three are new, 14 strong accretors, of which four are new and another four have Hα emission shifted by over 120 km s−1, two juvenile star candidates in the sparse population of the Ori OB1b association, and one spectroscopic binary candidate. Remarkably, we found 51 non-cluster-members, 35 of which were previously considered as σ Orionis members and taken into account in high-impact works on, for example, disc frequency and initial mass function. Context. Ionized outflows are ubiquitous in non-radio-loud obscured quasars (QSO2s) at different redshifts. However, the actual size of the outflows and their efficiency for gas ejection and star formation truncation are controversial. Large-scale (exceeding several kiloparsec) extended radio structures might be necessary to identify (even to trigger) outflow signatures across such large spatial scales. Aims. We search for large-scale ionized outflows associated with six optically selected QSO2 (five non-radio-loud and one radio-loud) at z ∼ 0.2−0.5, targeting objects with extended radio structures. We also investigate the dynamical state of the QSO2 host galaxies. Methods. We obtained data with the optical imager and long-slit spectrograph (OSIRIS) mounted on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias Spanish telescope (GTC) for these six QSO2 with the slit located along the radio axis. We traced the gas kinematics with the [OIII]λλ4959,5007 lines to investigate ionized outflows and characterize the dynamical state of the host galaxies. This second study was complemented with previously published spectroscopic data obtained with the multimode focal reducer and low dispersion spectrograph (FORS2) mounted on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of 13 more QSO2 at similar z. Results. We identify ionized outflows in four out of the six QSO2 observed with the GTC. The outflows are spatially unresolved in two QSO2 and compact in a third (radial size of R = 0.8 ± 0.3 kpc). Of particular interest is the radio-quiet QSO2 SDSS 0741+3020 at z = 0.47. It is associated with a giant ∼112 kpc nebula. An ionized outflow probably induced by the radio structures has been detected along the axis defined by the central ∼1″ radio structure, extending up to at least ∼4 kpc from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Turbulent gas (σ ∼ 130 km s−1) has also been detected across the giant gas nebula up to ∼40 kpc from the AGN. This turbulence may have been induced by outflows triggered by the interaction between a so-far undetected large-scale radio source and the nebula. Regarding the dynamical state of the host galaxies, we find that the majority of the QSO2 show v/σ <  1, implying that they are dominated by random motions (so-called dispersion-dominated systems). Most (17 of 19) fall in the area of the E/S0 galaxies in the dynamical diagram v/σ versus σ. None are consistent with spiral or disk galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The population of comets hosted by the Oort cloud is heterogeneous. Most studies in this area have focused on highly active objects, those with small perihelion distances or examples of objects with peculiar physical properties and/or unusual chemical compositions. This may have produced a biased sample of Oort cloud comets in which the most common objects may be rare, particularly those with perihelia well beyond the orbit of the Earth. Within this context, the known Oort cloud comets may not be representative of the full sample meaning that our current knowledge of the appearance of the average Oort cloud comet may not be accurate. Comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS) is an object of interest in this regard. Aims. Here, we study the spectral properties in the visible region and the cometary activity of C/2018 F4, and we also explore its orbital evolution with the aim of understanding its origin within the context of known minor bodies moving along nearly parabolic or hyperbolic paths. Methods. We present observations obtained with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) that we use to derive the spectral class and visible slope of C/2018 F4 as well as to characterise its level of cometary activity. Direct N-body simulations are carried out to explore its orbital evolution. Results. The absolute magnitude of C/2018 F4 is Hr > 13.62 ± 0.04 which puts a strong limit on its diameter, D < 10.4 km, assuming a pV = 0.04 cometary-like value of the albedo. The object presents a conspicuous coma, with a level of activity comparable to those of other comets observed at similar heliocentric distances. Comet C/2018 F4 has a visible spectrum consistent with that of an X-type asteroid, and has a spectral slope S′ = 4.0 ± 1.0%/1000 Å and no evidence of hydration. The spectrum matches those of well-studied primitive asteroids and comets. The analysis of its dynamical evolution prior to discovery suggests that C/2018 F4 is not of extrasolar origin. Conclusions. Although the present-day heliocentric orbit of C/2018 F4 is slightly hyperbolic, both its observational properties and past orbital evolution are consistent with those of a typical dynamically old comet with an origin in the Oort cloud. The low-inclination (i < 8°) primitive asteroid families in the inner main belt, that is, Polana-Eulalia, Erigone, Sulamitis, and Clarissa, are considered to be the most likely sources of near-Earth asteroids (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu. These two primitive NEAs will be visited by NASA OSIRIS-REx and JAXA Hayabusa 2 missions, respectively, with the aim of collecting samples of material from their surfaces and returning them back to Earth. In this context, the PRIMitive Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey (PRIMASS) was born, with the main aim to characterize the possible origins of these NEAs and constrain their dynamical evolution. As part of the PRIMASS survey we have already studied the Polana and Erigone collisional families in previously published works. The main goal of the work presented here is to compositionally characterize the Sulamitis and Clarissa families using visible spectroscopy. We have observed 97 asteroids (64 from Sulamitis and 33 from Clarissa) with the OSIRIS instrument (0.5-0.9 μm) at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC).We found that about 60% of the sampled asteroids from the Sulamitis family show signs of aqueous alteration on their surfaces.We also found that the majority of the Clarissa members present no signs of hydration. The results obtained here show similarities between Sulamitis-Erigone and Clarissa-Polana collisional families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Transiting planets offer an excellent opportunity for characterizing the atmospheres of extrasolar planets under very different conditions from those found in our solar system. Aims. We are currently carrying out a ground-based survey to obtain the transmission spectra of several extrasolar planets using the 10 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. In this paper we investigate the extrasolar planet WASP-48b, a hot Jupiter orbiting around an F-type star with a period of 2.14 days. Methods. We obtained long-slit optical spectroscopy of one transit of WASP-48b with the Optical System for Imaging and low- Intermediate-Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) spectrograph. We integrated the spectrum of WASP-48 and one reference star in several channels with different wavelength ranges, creating numerous color light curves of the transit. We fit analytic transit curves to the data taking into account the systematic effects present in the time series in an effort to measure the change of the planetto- star radius ratio (Rp=Rs) across wavelength. The change in transit depth can be compared with atmosphere models to infer the presence of particular atomic or molecular compounds in the atmosphere of WASP-48b. Results. After removing the transit model and systematic trends to the curves we reached precisions between 261 ppm and 455- 755 ppm for the white and spectroscopic light curves, respectively. We obtained Rp=Rs uncertainty values between 0.8 × 10-3 and 1.5×10-3 for all the curves analyzed in this work. The measured transit depth for the curves made by integrating the wavelength range between 530 nm and 905 nm is in agreement with previous studies. We report a relatively flat transmission spectrum for WASP-48b with no statistical significant detection of atmospheric species, although the theoretical models that fit the data more closely include TiO and VO. Aims. In this work, we use long-slit spectroscopy observations of a transit event of the close-in orbiting planet WASP-43b (Mp = 2:034 MJup, Rp = 1:036 RJup) in an effort to detect its atmosphere. Methods. We used the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) instrument OSIRIS to obtain long-slit spectra in the optical range 520-1040 nm of the planetary host star WASP-43 and of a reference star during a full primary transit event and four partial transit observations. We integrated the stellar flux of both stars in different wavelength regions producing several light curves. We fitted transit models to these curves to measure the star-to-planet radius ratio, Rp=Rs, across wavelength among other physical parameters. Results. We measure a mean planet-to-star radius ratio in the white light curve of 0:15988+0:00133 -0:00145. Using broadband filters, we detect the color signature of WASP-43. We present a tentative detection in the planet-to-star radius ratio around the Na i doublet (λ 588.9, 589.5 nm) when compared to the nearby continuum at the 2.9σ level. We find no significant excess of the measured planet-to-star radius ratio around the Ki doublet (λ 766.5 nm, 769.9 nm) when compared to the nearby continuum. Combining our observations with previously published epochs, we refine the estimation of the orbital period. Using a linear ephemeris, we obtained a period of P = 0:81347385 ± 1:5× 10-7 days. Using a quadratic ephemeris, we obtained an orbital period of 0:81347688 ± 8:6 × 10-7 days, and a change in this parameter of P = -0:15 × 0:06 s/year. As previous results, this hints to the orbital decay of this planet although a timing analysis over several years needs to be made to confirm this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We aim to study the dust ejected by main-belt comet (MBC) (300163) 2006 VW139 to obtain information on the ejection mechanism and the spectral properties of the object. This will help to see if they are compatible with those of "normal" comets. Methods. Broad-band images in the g and r band as well as a low-resolution spectrum in the 0.35-0.9 μm region were obtained with the GTC telescope (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Spain). Images were analyzed to produce a color map and derive a lower limit of the absolute magnitude H. A Monte Carlo scattering model was used to derive dust properties such as mass loss rates and ejection velocities as a function of time. The reflectance spectrum was compared to that of the well-studied MBC 133P/ Elst-Pizarro. The spectrum was also used to search for CN emission and to determine the upper limit of the CN production rate. Results. The reflectance spectrum of 2006 VW139 is typical of a C-class asteroid, with a spectral slope S V = 0.5 ± 1.0%/1000 Å. It is similar to the spectrum of 133P and other MBCs. No CN emission is detected in the spectrum. A CN production rate upper limit of 3.76 × 1023 s-1 is derived. Images show that the MBC present a narrow almost linear tail that extends up to 40 000 km in the anti-solar direction and more than 80 000 km in the direction of the object's orbital plane. The color of the tail is slightly redder than the Sun (S - between 3-6%/1000 Å). The Monte Carlo dust tail model derived the mass loss rates and ejection velocity as a function of time, and the results show that the activity onset occurs shortly after perihelion, and lasts about 100 days; the total ejected mass is ~2 × 106 kg. Conclusions. The spectrum of 2006 VW139 suggests that it is not a "normal" comet. The spectrum is typical of the other observed MBCs. Even if no CN emission is detected, the more likely activation mechanism is water-ice sublimation. Like other well studied MBCs, (300163) 2006 VW139 is likely a primitive C-class asteroid that has a water-ice subsurface depth reservoir that has recently been exposed to sunlight or to temperatures that produce enough heat to sublime the ice. Context. Although many studies have been performed so far, there are still dozens of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the young σ Orionis open cluster without detailed spectroscopic characterisation. Aims. We look for unknown strong accretors and disc hosts that were undetected in previous surveys. Methods. We collected low-resolution spectroscopy (R ∼ 700) of ten low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in σ Orionis with OSIRIS at the Gran Telescopio Canarias under very poor weather conditions. These objects display variability in the optical, infrared, Hα, and/or X-rays on time scales of hours to years. We complemented our spectra with optical and near-/mid-infrared photometry. Results. For seven targets, we detected lithium in absorption, identified Hα, the calcium doublet, and forbidden lines in emission, and/or determined spectral types for the first time. We characterise in detail a faint, T Tauri-like brown dwarf with an 18 h-period variability in the optical and a large Hα equivalent width of –125 ± 15 Å, as well as two M1-type, X-ray-flaring, low-mass stars, one with a warm disc and forbidden emission lines, the other with a previously unknown cold disc with a large inner hole. Conclusions. New unrevealed strong accretors and disc hosts, even below the substellar limit, await discovery among the list of known σ Orionis stars and brown dwarfs that are variable in the optical and have no detailed spectroscopic characterisation yet. Aims. The super-Earth planet GJ 1214b has recently been the focus of several studies, which use the transit spectroscopy technique to determine the nature of its atmosphere. Here, we focus on the Hα line as a tool to further restrict the nature of GJ 1214b’s atmosphere. Methods. We used the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) OSIRIS instrument to acquire narrow-band photometry with tunable filters. We were able to observe the primary transit of the super-Earth GJ 1214 in three bandpasses: two centered in the continuum around Hα (653.5 nm and 662.0 nm) and one centered at the line core (656.3 nm). We measure the depth of the planetary transit at each wavelength interval. Results. By fitting analytic models to the measured light curves, we were able to compute the depth of the transit at the three bandpasses. Taking the difference in the computed planet-to-star radius ratio between the line and the comparison continuum filters, we find Δ(Rp/R⋆)Hα − 653.5 = (6.60 ± 3.54) × 10-3 and Δ(Rp/R⋆)Hα − 662.0 = (3.30 ± 3.61) × 10-3. Although the planet radius is found to be larger in the Hα line than in the surrounding continuum, the quality of our observations and the sigma level of the differences (1.8 and 0.9, respectively) do not allow us to claim an Hα excess in GJ 1214’s atmosphere.
