Context. Past studies based on optical spectroscopy suggest that the five ω Cen pulsators form a rather homogeneous group of hydrogen-rich subdwarf O stars with effective temperatures of around 50 000 K. This places the stars below the red edge of the theoretical instability strip in the log g - Teff diagram, where no pulsation modes are predicted to be excited. Aims. Our goal is to determine whether this temperature discrepancy is real, or whether the stars' effective temperatures were simply underestimated. Methods. We present a spectral analysis of two rapidly pulsating extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars found in ω Cen. We obtained Hubble Space Telescope/COS UV spectra of two ω Cen pulsators, V1 and V5, and used the ionisation equilibrium of UV metallic lines to better constrain their effective temperatures. As a by-product we also obtained FUV lightcurves of the two pulsators. Results. Using the relative strength of the NIV and NV lines as a temperature indicator yields Teff values close to 60 000 K, significantly hotter than the temperatures previously derived. From the FUV light curves we were able to confirm the main pulsation periods known from optical data. Conclusions. With the UV spectra indicating higher effective temperatures than previously assumed, the sdO stars would now be found within the predicted instability strip. Such higher temperatures also provide consistent spectroscopic masses for both the cool and hot EHB stars of our previously studied sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of an extensive survey for rapid pulsators among Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars in ω Cen. The observations performed consist of nearly 100 h of time-series photometry for several off-centre fields of the cluster, as well as low-resolution spectroscopy for a partially overlapping sample. We obtained photometry for some 300 EHB stars, for around half of which we are able to recover light curves of sufficient quality to either detect or place meaningful non-detection limits for rapid pulsations. Based on the spectroscopy, we derive reliable values of log g, Teff and log N(He)/N(H) for 38 targets, as well as good estimates of the effective temperature for another nine targets, whose spectra are slightly polluted by a close neighbour in the image. The survey uncovered a total of five rapid variables with multi-periodic oscillations between 85 and 125 s. Spectroscopically, they form a homogeneous group of hydrogen-rich subdwarf O stars clustered between 48 000 and 54 000 K. For each of the variables we are able to measure between two and three significant pulsations believed to constitute independent harmonic oscillations. However, the interpretation of the Fourier spectra is not straightforward due to significant fine structure attributed to strong amplitude variations. In addition to the rapid variables, we found an EHB star with an apparently periodic luminosity variation of ~2700 s, which we tentatively suggest may be caused by ellipsoidal variations in a close binary. Using the overlapping photometry and spectroscopy sample we are able to map an empirical ω Cen instability strip in log g - Teff space. This can be directly compared to the pulsation driving predicted from the Montréal "second-generation" models regularly used to interpret the pulsations in hot B subdwarfs. Extending the parameter range of these models to higher temperatures, we find that the region where p-mode excitation occurs is in fact bifurcated, and the well-known instability strip between 29 000-36 000 K where the rapid subdwarf B pulsators are found is complemented by a second one above 50 000 K in the models. While significant challenges remain at the quantitative level, we believe that the same ?-mechanism that drives the pulsations in hot B subdwarfs is also responsible for the excitation of the rapid oscillations observed in the ω Cen variables. Intriguingly, the ω Cen variables appear to form a unique class. No direct counterparts have so far been found either in the Galactic field, nor in other globular clusters, despite dedicated searches. Conversely, our survey revealed no ω Cen representatives of the rapidly pulsating hot B subdwarfs found among the field population, though their presence cannot be excluded from the limited sample. We present Strömgren and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the bulge cluster NGC 6528 and its surrounding field in Baade’s Window. uvby images were collected with EFOSC2 on the New Technology Telescope (NTT, La Silla, ESO). The NIR catalogs are based on J, K-band VIRCAM at VISTA (Paranal, ESO) and SOFI at NTT photometry. We matched the aforementioned data sets with Hubble Space Telescope photometry to obtain proper-motion-cleaned samples of NGC 6528 and bulge stars. Furthermore, we were able to correct the Strömgren-NIR photometry for differential reddening. The huge color sensitivity of the Strömgren-NIR color–magnitude-diagrams (CMDs) helped us in separating age and metallicity effects. The red giant branch (RGB) of NGC 6528 is well reproduced in all the CMDs by adopting scaled solar isochrones with solar abundance, that is Z = 0.0198, or α-enhanced isochrones with the same iron content, that is Z = 0.04, and an age range of t = 10–12 Gyr. The same isochrones well reproduce most of the color spread of Baade’s Window RGB. These findings support the literature age estimates for NGC 6528. We also performed a new theoretical visual-NIR metallicity calibration based on the Strömgren index m1 and on visual–NIR colors for red giant (RG) stars. Scaled solar and α-enhanced models were adopted and we validated the new metallicity-index-color (MIC) relations by applying them to estimate the photometric metal abundance of a sample of field RGs and of a metal-poor (M 92, [Fe/H] ∼ −2.3) and a metal-rich (NGC 6624, [Fe/H] ∼ −0.7) globular cluster. We applied the calibration to estimate the mean metal abundance of NGC 6528, finding [Fe/H] = [M/H] = −0.04 ± 0.02, with a mean intrinsic dispersion of σ = 0.27 dex, by averaging the metallicities obtained with the scaled solar [m], y− J and [m], y− K MIC relations, and of −0.11± 0.01, with σ = 0.27 dex, by using the m1, y − J and m1, y − K relations. These findings support results based on high-resolution spectroscopy, which approximately give a solar metallicity for NGC 6528 with a modest α-enhancement. By applying the scaled solar MIC relations to the sample of Baade’s Window RGs, we find a metallicity distribution that extends approximately from [Fe/H] ∼ −1.0 up to [Fe/H] ∼ 1 dex, with two metallicity peaks at [Fe/H] ≈ −0.2 and [Fe/H] ≈ 0.55 ([m], y− J and [m], y− K relations), and [Fe/H] ≈ −0.25 and [Fe/H] ≈ 0.4 (m1, y− J and m1, y−K relations). These findings fairly agree with previous spectroscopic studies for Baade’sWindow and the recent results of the ARGOS surveys for the bulge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a theoretical calibration of a new metallicity diagnostic based on the Stromgren index m1 and on visual - near-infrared (NIR) colors to estimate the global metal abundance of cluster and field dwarf stars. To perform the metallicity calibration we adopt ar-enhanced evolutionary models transformed into the observational plane by using atmosphere models computed adopting the same chemical mixture. We apply the new visual-NW metallicity-index-color (MIC) relations to two different samples of field dwarfs and we find that the difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements is on average smaller than 0.1 dex, with a dispersion smaller than σ = 0.3 dex. We apply the same MIC relations to a metal-poor (M 92) and a metal-rich (47 Tuc) globular cluster. We find a peak of -2.01 ± 0.08 (σ = 0.30 dex) and -0.47 ± 0.01 (σ = 0.42 dex), respectively.
