4. An optical study of stars and dust in the Andromeda galaxy

Abstract

The distribution of light in M 31 is characterized on the basis of the UBVR surface photometry reported by Walterbos and Kennicutt (1987). The results of the data analysis are presented in extensive graphs, maps, and tables and discussed in detail, considering the outer disk regions, the decomposition into bulge and disk, the global disk and bulge colors, and dust and gas in two spiral arms. Principal findings examined include: (1) position-angle changes at radial distances beyond about 18 kpc (consistent with SW disk warping); (2) a bulge profile well described by an r exp 1/4 power law; (3) a bulge contribution to total light of about 40 percent; (4) increasing blueness in the outer disk (color gradient 0.02 mag/kpc in B-R); (5) an extinction law similar to that for the Galaxy; and (6) a significant correlation between dust and H I distributions.

5. Witnessing galaxy preprocessing in the local Universe: the case of a star-bursting group falling into Abell 1367

Abstract

We present a multiwavelength analysis of a compact group of galaxies infalling at high speed into the dynamically young cluster Abell 1367. Peculiar morphologies and unusually high Hαemission are associated with two giant galaxies and at least ten dwarfs/extragalactic HII regions, making this group the region with the highest density of star formation activity ever observed in the local clusters. Moreover Hαimaging observations reveal extraordinary complex trails of ionized gas behind the galaxies, with projected lengths exceeding 150 kpc. These unique cometary trails mark the gaseous trajectory of galaxies, witnessing their dive into the hot cluster intergalactic medium. Under the combined action of tidal forces among group members and the ram-pressure by the cluster ambient medium, the group galaxies were fragmented and the ionized gas was blown out. The properties of this group suggest that environmental effects within infalling groups may have represented a preprocessingstep of the galaxy evolution during the high redshift cluster assembly phase.

Abstract

NGC 1097 is a nearby SBb galaxy with a Seyfert nucleus and a bright starburst ring. We study the physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the ring using spatially resolved far-infrared spectral maps of the circumnuclear starburst ring of NGC 1097, obtained with the PACS spectrometer on board the HerschelSpace Observatory. In particular, we map the important ISM cooling and diagnostic emission lines of [OI] 63 μm, [OIII] 88 μm, [NII] 122 μm, [CII] 158 μm and [NII] 205 μm. We observe that in the [OI] 63 μm, [OIII] 88 μm, and [NII] 122 μm line maps, the emission is enhanced in clumps along the NE part of the ring. We observe evidence of rapid rotation in the circumnuclear ring, with a rotation velocity of ~220 km s-1(inclination uncorrected) measured in all lines. The [OI] 63 μm/[CII] 158 μm ratio varies smoothly throughout the central region, and is enhanced on the northeastern part of the ring, which may indicate a stronger radiation field. This enhancement coincides with peaks in the [OI] 63 μm and [OIII] 88 μm maps. Variations of the [NII] 122 μm/[NII] 205 μm ratio correspond to a range in the ionized gas density between 150 and 400 cm-3.
