The self-similar expansion method is applied on the fluid system of equations which describes a plasma system consisting of opposite polarity dust grains, positive ions and electrons. The resultant system of equations is solved numerically to study the properties of the plasma expansion of this system. Propagation of nonlinear dust-acoustic waves in a magnetized collisionless plasma having positively, negatively charged dust grains and nonextensive distributed electrons and ions has been investigated. A reductive perturbation method is used to obtain a nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation describing the model. The dynamics of the modulational instability gives rise to the formation of rogue waves that is described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The dependence of rogue waves profiles on positive and negative charged dust cyclotron frequencies, nonextensive parameters of electrons and ions is investigated numerically. Shear and compressional dust Alfvén solitons propagating in a medium of opposite polarity magnetized dust fluids have been theoretically studied by using the reductive perturbation method. The derivative nonlinear Shrödinger (DNLS) and Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV) equations, and their stationary solitonic solutions have been derived to identify the basic properties of shear and compressional dust Alfvén solitons. It is found that the opposite polarity dust medium under consideration supports the shear and compressional dust Alfvén solitons having new features with new (slow) time and (large) length scales. The basic features (amplitude and width) of the shear dust Alfvén solitons are found to be significantly different from those of the compressional ones. The importance of our results in understanding the nonlinear (localized) electromagnetic wave phenomena in space environments and laboratory devices is briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weak ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) in unmagnetized plasmas having two-fluid ions and kappa-distributed electrons are considered. The effects of electron suprathermality, warm ion temperature and polarity on the nonlinear properties of these IASWs are analyzed. The head-on collisions of ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) in a dense magnetized quantum plasma are investigated. The two-sided Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations in generic case as well as the two-sided modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations in a special case are obtained, the analytical phase shifts and the trajectories after the head-on collisions of two IASWs in a three species quantum plasma are derived by using the extended version of Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) method for both the situations. We provide the theoretical predictions about the existence of compressive and rarefactive IASWs in the model. We observe that in generic case collisions are possible among the same polarity solitons, whereas in the special case collisions are possible among the same or opposite polarities solitons. Moreover the colliding phase shifts are significantly affected by the quantum diffraction parameter, by the square of the ratio of ion gyrofrequency to ion plasma frequency and by obliqueness of propagation. The important observations of this manuscript are that the waves reach a maximum amplitude which is the superposition of the initial amplitudes and they suffer a time delay during their collision. Drifts are one of the major cosmic ray modulation mechanisms in the heliosphere. Three types of drifts occur in the background heliospheric magnetic field, namely curvature, gradient and current sheet drifts. The last component occurs because of the switch in magnetic field polarity across the heliospheric current sheet and is the main topic of study. We discuss and implement a new approach to model drifts in a numerical modulation model. The model employs stochastic differential equations to solve the relevant transport equation in five (three spatial, energy and time) dimensions. What is of interest is the fact that the model can handle current sheet tilt angles up to the theoretical maximum of α=90° and still remain numerically stable. We use the additional insights gained from the numerical model to investigate the effectiveness of drifts along the current sheet by examining the relationship between the current sheet path length and the cosmic ray propagation time. It is found that diffusion can disrupt the drift process very effectively, leading to diffusive short circuiting of the current sheet by the cosmic rays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of dust polarity and superthermal electrons are incorporated in the study of dust ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary waves (SWs) as well double layers (DLs) in a dusty plasma containing warm adiabatic ions, superthermal electrons, and arbitrarily (positively or negatively) charged immobile dust. Based on the energy-like integral equation, a new relationship between the localized electrostatic disturbances and dust polarity is derived. It is shown that there exists rarefactive SWs and DLs with qualitatively different structures in a way that depends on the population of superthermal electrons. As the electrons evolve their thermodynamic equilibrium, the localized structures are found with larger amplitude. It is also found that their amplitude increases (decreases) with the increase in the negative (positive) dust number density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The propagation and the head-on collision of nonlinear dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in dusty plasmas consisting of electrons, ions and negative as well as positive dust particles are investigated. Applying an extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) method, Kortwege-de Vries equations and analytical phase shifts after the head-on collision of two DASWs in dusty plasmas are obtained. Analytically and numerically, the relevance of the phase shifts and trajectories to the positive-to-negative dust number density ratio, the ratio of the ion number density to negative dust number density, negative-to-positive dust particle mass ratio, and the ion-to-electron temperature ratio effects is explicitly demonstrated.
