HS0702+6043 (DW Lyn) is one of the very few known sdB pulsators which exhibit both pressure- and gravity-mode oscillations. Given its high potential for asteroseismology, we carried out an extensive campaign in integrated light photometry at the Steward Observatory 1.6 m Kuiper Telescope using the new CCD camera Mont4K, a joint venture between the Universite de Montreal and the University of Arizona. Over a period starting November 1st 2007 up to March 14th 2008, we were able to gather some 424.5 hours of useful data. To our knowledge, never before a pulsating sdB star has been observed at such high frequency resolution and sensitivity. We present the results of a preliminary analysis of this unique data set.

In 2007, a companion with planetary mass was found around the pulsating subdwarf B star V391 Pegasi with the timing method, indicating that a previously undiscovered population of substellar companions to apparently single subdwarf B stars might exist. Following this serendipitous discovery, the EXOTIME (http://www.na.astro.it/~silvotti/exotime/) monitoring program has been set up to follow the pulsations of a number of selected rapidly pulsating subdwarf B stars on time-scales of several years with two immediate observational goals: 1) determine Pdot of the pulsational periods P 2) search for signatures of substellar companions in O-C residuals due to periodic light travel time variations, which would be tracking the central star's companion-induced wobble around the center of mass. These sets of data should therefore at the same time: on the one hand be useful to provide extra constraints for classical asteroseismological exercises from the Pdot (comparison with "local" evolutionary models), and on the other hand allow to investigate the preceding evolution of a target in terms of possible "binary" evolution by extending the otherwise unsuccessful search for companions to potentially very low masses. While timing pulsations may be an observationally expensive method to search for companions, it samples a different range of orbital parameters, inaccessible through orbital photometric effects or the radial velocity method: the latter favours massive close-in companions, whereas the timing method becomes increasingly more sensitive towards wider separations. We started a program to construct several grids of suitable model atmospheres and synthetic spectra for hot subdwarf O stars computed, for comparative purposes, in LTE, NLTE, with and without metals. For the moment, we use our grids to perform fits on our spectrum of SDSS J160043.6+074802.9 (J1600+0748 for short), this unique pulsating sdO star. Our best fit is currently obtained with NLTE model atmospheres including carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in solar abundances, which leads to the following parameters for SDSS J1600+0748 : Teff = 69 060 +/- 2080 K, log g = 6.00 +/- 0.09 and log N(He)/N(H) = -0.61 +/- 0.06. Improvements are needed, however, particularly for fitting the available He II lines. In this paper, we report a rare reflection effect eclipsing sdB+dM binary, 2M 1533+3759. It is the seventh eclipsing sdB+dM binary that has been discovered to date. This system has an orbital period of 0.16177042 day and a velocity semi-amplitude of 71.1 km s−1. Using a grid of zero-metallicity NLTE model atmospheres, we derived Teff=29250 K, log g=5.58 and [He/H]=−2.37 from spectra taken near the reflection effection minimum. Lightcurve modeling resulted in a system mass ratio of 0.301 and an orbital inclination angle of 86.6°. The derived primary mass for 2M 1533+3759, 0.376±0.055 M⊙, is significantly lower than the canonical mass (0.48 M⊙) found for most previously investigated sdB stars. This implies an initial progenitor mass >1.8 M⊙, at least a main sequence A star and perhaps even one massive enough to undergo non-degenerate helium ignition.

We report on the outcome of the first major multi-site campaign on a long-period variable subdwarf B star. The target PG 1627+017 was observed for a total of 334 h during April/May/June 2003 from the lynchpin observatory at Mt. Bigelow, Arizona, with important contributions coming from co-observations at SAAO, Calar Alto and Siding Spring. Preliminary analysis indicates the presence of 8–10 probable periods in the range ∼4500 to ∼8900 s with relative amplitudes between 0.1 and 0.5%;. The range over which the periods are found is in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions and the number of periods found shows potential for an in-depth asteroseismological analysis. Multi-colour observations show that the relative amplitudes of pulsation are larger in the U-band than in the R, which again is in agreement with theory. However, more multi-colour observations are needed to be able to make statements at the quantitative level.

Preliminary results are presented from two ongoing complementary surveys intended to investigate the nature and characteristics of the optically invisible secondaries in post-common envelope subdwarf B (sdB) binary stars. We obtain precise radial velocities to derive periods and minimum companion masses for bright field sdB stars. These data are combined with light curves to search for eclipses, reflection effects, or ellipsoidal variations. We emphasize the importance of using complete unbiased samples, without which it will not be possible to understand the details of the multiple processes that produce these stars.

Radial velocity curves have been measured for nine sdB stars from high resolution optical spectra and are found to be sinusoidal indicating that they are binary stars with circular orbits. Their periods range from ≈12 h to more than 8 days. The companions are invisible in optical light. Minimum companion masses are derived from the mass functions, assuming the mass of the sdB primary to be half a solar mass. We argue that the companions to UVO 1735+22, Feige 108, HD 188112, and HD 171858 are white dwarfs, since their (statistically) most likely mass is above ≈0.7M⊙. Five of the systems have not been investigated before, for the others our results agree with previously published ones.

We briefly review the recent advances that have been made on the front of pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) stars. The first family of sdB pulsators, the EC 14026 stars, was discovered a few years ago and consists of short-period (∼100−200 s) p-mode variables. The second type of pulsating sdB’s consists of the PG 1716+426 stars, a group of variables showing long-period (∼1 h) g-mode pulsations. The existence of the latter was first reported less than a year ago. While the two types of sdB pulsators differ markedly in their observational characteristics, we recently found a unifying property in the sense that the observed modes in these objects are excited through the same driving process, a classic kappa mechanism associated with the radiative levitation of iron in the stellar envelope.

During the course of an ongoing CCD monitoring program to investigate low-level light variations in subdwarf B (sdB) stars, weserendipitously discovered a new class of multimode pulsators withperiods of the order of an hour. These periods are a factor of tenlonger than those of previously known multimode sdB pulsators (EC14026 stars), implying the new pulsations are due to gravity modes rather than pressure modes. The iron opacity instability that drives the short period EC 14026 stars is effective in hot sdB's. Thelong period pulsators are found only among cooler sdB stars, wherethey are surprisingly common. The mechanism responsible for excitingthe deeper g-modes in cool sdB's is currently unknown, but thetemperature and gravity range in which these stars occur must be animportant clue. We present the first observational results for thisnew class of pulsating sdB stars, and discuss some possible implications.
