In this paper, I aim to analyze the contributions and limits of the concepts of peace and violence proposed by Johan Galtung for the study of violent conflicts. In doing so, I try to emphasize not only their advantages and disadvantages, but also reformulate them in a way that they don´t loose their original meanings. More specifically, I argue that instead of using the concepts of cultural violence and cultural peace, we should use the expressions “meaning in the service of violence" and “meaning in the service of peace".
