The fallow agricultural soils of Northwest Russia represent an evolutionary model of the development of ecosystem components in time and space with multidirectional dynamics of agrogenic impact during the long history of agricultural land development. There has been both large-scale land development and uncontrolled conversion of arable lands to a fallow state along with their removal in recent times. All this has led to the formation of a chrono-series of different-age soils with varying degrees of exposure of agrogenic factors. This paper presents a current review of the humus state of fallow soils in Northwest Russia, and examines the main factors (self-restoration, humus transformation, acidification) influencing the transformation of the soil cover under the process of post-agrogenesis. Effective farming techniques aimed at fixing carbon in soils as part of increasing the sequestration potential to mitigate the impact of climate change are considered. The ongoing process of the transition of lands into a fallow state could lead to organic carbon losses and changes in the main physical and chemical parameters, which negatively affects the self-restoration of fallow lands. We offer some recommendations for the effective rewetting of fallow lands in Northwest Russia with the purpose of carbon sequestration in the soil cover. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thawing permafrost has affected the structural integrity of buried warm pipelines in cold regions and poses an ongoing threat in the context of climate change. Therefore, characterizing variation in the engineering properties of pipeline foundation permafrost and its effect on the mechanical behavior of pipeline is important. In this paper, the ground temperature distributions around a buried warm pipeline and mechanical response of the pipeline to differential thaw settlement of foundation permafrost are investigated using thermal–mechanical sequential coupling simulation, based on the observational data collected from a selected monitoring site along the China-Russia crude oil pipelines in northeastern China. The results indicate that the thaw-induced settlement of pipeline foundation permafrost develops quickly with the formation and expansion of the thaw bulb in the first 10 years, and then increases slowly when the thaw bulb extends to the weathered granite. Differential thaw settlement will cause a significant change in the deformation and stress of the pipeline near the interface of strong and weak thaw settlement zones. When the length ratio of strong and weak thaw settlement zones is 1, the maximum stress of the pipeline with a thickness of 16 mm is approximately 45% of the allowable stress of X65 steel, and the pipeline remains safe for 30 years. However, the potential failure of the pipeline should be considered due to the continued ground thawing and warming and pipe material aging. The cloud adjacency effect on surface reflectance retrievals for the region of the Russian Federation with coordinates 51–54 ∘   N , 103–109 ∘   E including the southern part of Lake Baikal for the period of 1–23 July 2021 is assessed in this paper. The method is based on the computer program for statistical simulation of radiative transfer in the atmosphere with the stochastic cloud field including a deterministic gap of a given radius. The results of this program are then used in the interpolation formula. Masks of cloudless pixels, for which the cloud adjacency effect (CAE) changes the ground surface reflectance by more than 0.005, are constructed. The analysis of the resulting CAE radii shows that the average radius is 13.7 km for MODIS band 8, 11.2 km for band 3, 8.4 km for band 4, 7.2 km for band 1, and 7 km for band 2. For the considered MODIS images and bands, the pixels with strong CAE make up from 2.8 to 100% of the total number of cloudless pixels. The correlation coefficients between the initial data and the CAE radius suggest that the cloud optical depth, cloud cover index, and ground surface reflectance exert the major influence on the considered images. A simplified approximation equation for the CAE radius as a function of the cloud optical depth, cloud cover index, and surface reflectance is derived. The analysis of the approximation shows that for the considered images, the CAE radius decreases nearly linearly with wavelength for low reflective surfaces. This paper aims to better understand why there was a global warming pause in 2000–2015 and why the global mean surface temperature (GMST) has risen again in recent years. We present and statistically analyze substantial time-series observed datasets of global lower-stratospheric temperature (GLST), troposphere–stratosphere temperature climatology, global land surface air temperature, GMST, sea ice extent (SIE) and snow cover extent (SCE), combined with modeled calculations of GLSTs and GMSTs. The observed and analyzed results show that GLST/SCE has stabilized since the mid-1990s with no significant change over the past two and a half decades. Upper-stratospheric warming at high latitudes has been observed and GMST or global land surface air temperature has reached a plateau since the mid-2000s with the removal of natural effects. In marked contrast, continued drastic warmings at the coasts of polar regions (particularly Russia and Alaska) are observed and well explained by the sea-ice-loss warming amplification mechanism. The calculated GMSTs by the parameter-free quantum-physics warming model of halogenated greenhouse gases (GHGs) show excellent agreement with the observed GMSTs after the natural El Niño southern oscillation and volcanic effects are removed. These results have provided strong evidence for the dominant warming mechanism of anthropogenic halogenated GHGs. During 2020–2021, a comprehensive experiment was conducted to study the composition of near-surface atmospheric aerosol in Moscow. The paper considers the experimental data together with synoptic and meteorological conditions. Attention is focused on six episodes of extremely high aerosol mass concentration values: in March and October 2020, as well in March, April, May and July 2021. In all these cases (and only in them), the average daily mass concentration of PM10 aerosol exceeded the Maximum Permissible Concentration (MPC) value (according to Russian standards, 60 μg/m3). The origin of the aerosol during these periods of extreme pollution is revealed, which is the main result of the work. It was shown that the July episode of 2021 was associated with a local intensive anthropogenic source that arose as a result of the active dismantling and demolition of multistory industrial buildings. The remaining spring and autumn episodes were caused by atmospheric transport of both smoke aerosol from various regions with strong biomass fires and dust aerosol from arid zones of the south of European territory of Russia (ETR) with dust wind storms. The cases of atmospheric pollution transport to Moscow region from the other regions are confirmed with the help of air mass transport trajectories (HYSPLIT 4 model) and MERRA-2 reanalysis data on black carbon and/or dust distribution in the atmosphere over ETR. Differences in the elemental composition of the near-surface aerosol of Moscow air during periods with extremely high aerosol concentrations are analyzed in comparison with each other and with unperturbed conditions for the season. We present a union of three measurement systems on the basis of the Siberian lidar station and mobile ozone lidar. The lidars are designed for studying the ozonosphere using the method of differential absorption and scattering, as well as for studying aerosol fields using elastic single scattering. The systems are constructed on the basis of Nd:YAG lasers (SOLAR) and an Nd:YAG laser (LOTIS TII), a XeCl laser (Lambda Physik) and receiving telescopes assembled using the Kassegrain system with a diameter 0.35 m and the Newtonian 0.5 m system. Lidars operate in photon-counting mode and record lidar signals with a spatial resolution from 1.5 m to 160 m at sensing wavelengths of 299/341 nm in the altitude range of ~0.1–12 km and ~5–20, and at 308/353 nm in the altitude range of ~15–45 km. The union of these three measurement systems was used to carry out field experiments of atmospheric lidar sensing in Tomsk and to present the results of retrieving the vertical profile of the ozone concentration. For the first time, data on the emission of climate-active gases from soils of different types of use of the south taiga sub-zone were obtained. Soils of the boreal belt are key elements of the global carbon cycle. They determine the sink and emission of climate-active gases. Soils near large cities are a major carbon sink, in the face of climate change, soils from sinks can become a source of carbon and contribute significantly to climate change on the planet. Studies of FCO2 and FCH4 fluxes were carried out on the territory of the monitoring site "Ladoga" located in the southern taiga subzone in soils of land not used in agriculture, former agriculture lands, and wetlands. During the chamber measurements, a portable gas analyzer GLA131-GGA (ABB, Canada) was used. The chamber was placed on the soil, after which the concentration of CO2, CH4 and H2O in the mobile chamber was recorded. As a result of the study it was found that the lowest emission of carbon dioxide is characteristic of soils developing on the soils of wetland and is 0.64 gCO2/(m2*year). Which is associated with a high degree of hydrophobicity of the territory and changes in the redox regime. The highest emission of carbon dioxide is registered in soils on the land not used in agriculture and is 4.16 gCO2/(m2*year). This is due to the formation of predominantly labile forms of carbon in the soil, which can be relatively rapidly involved in the carbon cycle and affect the active emission of carbon from the soil. According to the data obtained on FCH4 emission from soils, it was found that soils of land not used in agriculture and former agriculture lands were net sinks, while soils of wetlands were characterized by CH4 source, the emission was from 0.05 to 0.83 gCH4/(m2*year). The results obtained indicate spatial heterogeneity and changes in the carbon cycle within the monitoring site "Ladoga", which are due to the change of plant communities and habitat type. Monitoring the release of important greenhouse gases in close proximity to major urban areas is an important task in the face of predicted climate change and increasing rates of urbanization. This paper considers spatiotemporal distribution and seasonal variability of aerosol optical depth (AOD) of the atmosphere at the 0.55 μm wavelength in the atmosphere over the Baikal region of Russia based on long-term data (2005–2019) from satellite observations (MODIS/AQUA). A comparison of satellite AOD values with the AERONET record at the Geophysical Observatory of Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of Siberian Brunch of Russian Academy of Science was performed. The results show that interannual AOD variability is mainly due to forest fires. The highest atmospheric transparency was in 2010, 2013 and 2016, and the lowest was in 2008, 2012 and 2014. It is noted that AOD decreased with latitude with a gradient ΔAOD = 0.002 ÷ 0.001 per degree of latitude. The mean seasonal variations in AOD at the six satellite overpass points were characterized by spring (April) and summer (July) highs and low AOD values in autumn. Severe convective windstorms and tornadoes regularly hit the territory of Russia causing substantial damage and fatalities. An analysis of the climatology and formation environments of these events is essential for risk assessments, forecast improvements and identifying of links with the observed climate change. In this paper, we present an analysis of severe convective windstorms, i.e., squalls and tornadoes reported between 1984 and 2020 in the Perm region (northeast of European Russia), where a local maximum in the frequency of such events was previously found. The analysed database consists of 165 events and includes 100 squalls (convective windstorms), 59 tornadoes, and six cases with both tornadoes and squalls. We used various information to compile the database including weather station reports, damage surveys, media reports, previously presented databases, and satellite images for windthrow. We found that the satellite images of damaged forests are the main data source on tornadoes, but their role is substantially lower for windstorm events due to the larger spatial and temporal scale of such events. Synoptic-scale environments and associated values of convective indices were determined for each event with a known date and time. Similarities and differences for the formation conditions of tornadoes and windstorms were revealed. Both squalls and tornadoes occur mostly on rapidly moving cold fronts or on waving quasi-stationary fronts, associated with low-pressure systems. Analyses of 72-h air parcel backward trajectories shows that the Caspian and Aral Seas are important sources of near-surface moisture for the formation of both squalls and tornadoes. Most of these events are formed within high CAPE and high shear environments, but tornadic storms are generally characterised by a higher wind shear and helicity. We also differentiated convective storms that caused forest damage and those did not. We found the composite parameter WMAXSHEAR is the best discriminator between these two groups. In general, storm events causing windthrow mainly occur under conditions more favourable for deep well-organised convection. Thus, forest damage can be considered as an indicator of the storm severity in the Perm region and in adjacent regions with forest-covered area exceeding 50%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change and climate-sensitive disasters caused by climatic hazards have a significant and increasing direct and indirect impact on human health. Due to its vast area, complex geographical environment and various climatic conditions, Russia is one of the countries that suffers significantly from frequent climate hazards. This paper provides information about temperature extremes in Russia in the beginning of the 21st century, and their impact on human health. A literature search was conducted using the electronic databases Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, and e-Library, focusing on peer-reviewed journal articles published in English and in Russian from 2000 to 2021. The results are summarized in 16 studies, which are divided into location-based groups, including Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other large cities located in various climatic zones: in the Arctic, in Siberia and in the southern regions, in ultra-continental and monsoon climate. Heat waves in cities with a temperate continental climate lead to a significant increase in all-cause mortality than cold waves, compared with cities in other climatic zones. At the same time, in northern cities, in contrast to the southern regions and central Siberia, the influence of cold waves is more pronounced on mortality than heat waves. To adequately protect the population from the effects of temperature waves and to carry out preventive measures, it is necessary to know specific threshold values of air temperature in each city. This study evaluated the spatial and long-term variations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the snow at 55 industrial, urban, rural, and remote stations in Eastern Siberia, Russia, in 2021 in comparison to data obtained from the 1990s to the 2010s. In 2021, the mean levels of the organochlorine compounds in snow amounted to 76 ng/L ∑PCB36, 5.8 ng/L hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 0.02 ng/L α-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), and 1.01 ng/L dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites. The spatial distribution of organochlorines was shown to result from the presence of industrial and urban sources, as well as atmospheric transport. The PCB and HCB temporal distributions from the 1990s to the 2020s were represented as V-shaped curves. The PCB homological patterns show that, in some of the samples, the abundance of lower chlorinated homologues in 2021 is greater than in previous years. Over the last three decades, the HCH and DDT levels have significantly decreased. The relationship between PCBs and suspended particulate matter became stronger with the increase in PCB chlorination levels from lighter to heavier chlorinated congeners. Deposition with wet precipitation in the wintertime provided 3–8% of the annual deposition flux. In this study, we evaluate the long-term and seasonal variations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), α-, γ-hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCH), and p,p′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p′-DDT) and its metabolites through a passive air sampling method at two (urban and suburban) stations in Eastern Siberia, Russia, in 2011–2017. The median levels of HCB, ∑HCHs, ∑DDTs, ∑PCB39, and ∑PCB6 in the air were 116, 84, 55, 128, and 41 pg/m3 and 83, 21, 11, 52, and 16 pg/m3 at the urban and suburban stations, respectively. PCB and HCH levels in the air of Irkutsk decreased considerably in the 2000s, in comparison to the late 1980s and early 1990s, while an increasing trend was observed for HCB during the 2010s. The seasonality of air concentrations (with summer concentrations higher than winter concentrations) was well exhibited by PCB, HCH, and DDT, but not HCB. Significant correlations were observed between approximately all studied persistent organic pollutants and the average air temperature, quantity of precipitation, and frequency of the prevailing wind direction during the sampling period. The daily doses of PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, and HCB under human exposure by inhalation amounted to 38, 21, 27, and 35 and 17, 6, 7, and 27 pg/kg body weight per day in urban and suburban areas, respectively. Biomass burning is an important and changing component of global and hemispheric carbon cycles. Boreal forest fires in Russia and Canada are significant sources of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). The influence of carbon monoxide (CO) on the greenhouse effect is practically absent; its main absorption bands of 4.6 and 2.3 μm are far away from the climatically important spectral regions. Meanwhile, CO concentrations in fire plumes are closely related to CO2 and CH4 emissions from fires. On the other hand, satellite measurements of CO are much simpler than those of the aforementioned gases. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) operating in the Thermal IR spectral region has provided a satellite-based CO data set since October 2002. This satellite data allow to estimate CO emissions from biomass burning north of 30° N using a simple two-box mass-balance model. These results correlate closely with independently estimated CO emissions from the GFED4c bottom-up database. In 2021, both estimate record high emissions throughout the preceding two decades, double the annual emissions compared to previous periods. There have been two years with extremely high emissions (2003 and 2021) but for the rest of the data, an upward trend with a rate of 3.6 ± 2.2 Tg CO yr−2 (4.8 ± 2.7% yr−1) was found. The role of the atmosphere in the formation of the chemical composition and quality of water in Lake Baikal and its tributaries has been increasing in recent years. In this regard, studies of the chemical composition of the constituents of the atmosphere have an important practical application. In 2020 and 2021, we studied the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol, one of the indicators of air pollution, in the atmosphere of the coastal zone of the southern basin of Lake Baikal compared to the data from previous years. The studies were carried out in the summer on the southwestern (Bolshiye Koty) and southeastern coast (Boyarsky). In the absence of smoke in the aerosol on the southwest coast, the concentrations of NH4+, NO3− and SO42− ions prevailed. The mean total concentration of ions at the Bolshiye Koty research station was 2.08 ± 1.26 μg/m3. The appearance of smog contributed to the growth of the total ionic concentration in the aerosol on the southwest coast to 6.4 μg/m3 in 2020 and to 17.6 μg/m3 in 2021. On the southeast coast, the minimum concentration of the total amount of ions was 3.3 μg/m3. The concentrations of Ca2+, Na+, K+, Cl−, and SO42− ions prevailed in the aerosol. Under the influence of smog, the total amount of ions increased to 34.1 μg/m3 in 2020 and to 18.6 μg/m3 in 2021. In periods of intense smoke, NH4+ and SO42− became the dominant ions in the aerosols at both stations. The contribution of NO3− ions increased. Although the effect of natural factors is periodic, they contribute significantly to the change in the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
