Economic development and fast growing urbanization in China have caused severe air pollution, with frequent pollution episodes endangering the health of inhabitants and disturbing social activities, and as an expanding metropolis, Chengdu has suffered ever since. The concentration variations of main air pollutants, such as PM10, PM2.5 and NO2, often show periodicity because of meteorological impact and anthropic activities, and display orientation discrepancies due to influences of wind speed (WS), frequency and pollutant sources. These features have complicated the mechanisms of pollution episodes and deepened the difficulty in pollution control evaluation. The WS has significant influences on the periodicity and orientation variations in pollutant concentrations, and quantifying the influence of which is of high significance and provides sustainable foundations for pollution alleviation strategies. Different time-scale cycles (i.e., Diurnal, weekly, seasonal and annual), along with the WS, wind frequency, wind and spatial orientations in urban areas, were analyzed in this paper. Results show that the periodicity of diurnal, seasonal and annual cycles is remarkable, and weekly cycle is obvious by adding the influence of the WS in 16 orientations. The WS has direct impacts on pollutants varying in the range of 1.5–2.5 m/s, and has a remarkable diffusion effect on pollutants once above 2.5 m/s. Over heavy pollution hours in diurnal, weekly, annual cycles and transitional seasons, the WS had more significant influences on pollutants, and whereas the wind frequency is not the main impact factor for orientation variations. For Chengdu, the northeast orientation is suitable to construct a wind panel with a remarkable diffusion effect on pollutants, while air pollutions in the northwest and southwest orientations were severe with the WS below 1.5 m/s, and pollution diffusion in the north-northwest orientation was the worst. This work can provide guidance and reference for urban planning optimization and air environment protection in cities with air quality control considerations impacted by city wind. Natural environmental factors and human activity intensity factors, the two main factors that affect the spatial and temporal distribution of PM2.5 concentration near the surface, have different mechanisms of action on PM2.5 concentration. In this paper, a GTWR-XGBoost two-stage sequential hybrid model is proposed aiming at detecting the expression of spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the traditional machine learning retrieval model of PM2.5 concentration and the difficulty of expressing the complex nonlinear relationship in the statistical regression model. In the first stage, the natural environmental factors are used to predict PM2.5 concentration with spatiotemporal characteristics by collinearity diagnosis method and Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression method (GTWR). In the second stage, the simulation results in the first stage and the natural factors eliminated through LUR stepwise regression in the first stage are into the XGBoost model together with the human activity intensity factors in the buffer zone with the best correlation coefficient of PM2.5, and finally the temporal and spatial distribution of PM2.5 concentration. Taking the Chengdu Chongqing Economic Circle as an example, the proposed model is used to retrieve PM2.5 concentration and compared with the single GTWR, XGBoost, and coupling model published recently. The experimental results show that the R2, RMSE, and MAE of the GTWR-XGBoost two-stage model cross-validation are 0.92, 5.44 ug·m−3, and 4.12 ug·m−3, respectively. Compared with the above single models, R2 increased by 0.01 and 0.12, and MAE decreased by more than 0.11 and 3.1, respectively. Compared with the coupling model published recently, R2 is increased by 0.02, and MAE is reduced by more than 0.4. In addition, the PM2.5 concentration in Chengdu Chongqing showed obvious seasonal temporal and spatial changes, and the influence ratios of natural environmental factors and human activity intensity activities factors on PM2.5 were 0.66 and 0.34. The results show that the GTWR-XGBoost two-stage Model can not only describe the heterogeneity and objectively reflect the complex nonlinear relationship between the phenomenon and the influencing factors, but also enhance the interpretability of the phenomenon when simulating the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of PM2.5 concentration. In China, traditional food is a significant element of culture that affects human behaviors. The point of interest (POI) of traditional food restaurants' location and their volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions affect the urban ecology. Rather than examine potential urban development patch (PUDP) based on land use data, the perspective of this paper is to examine the PUDP, air quality, and food culture in urban ecology in Chengdu, China. Methods: First, the research identifies three types of PUDP models (open PUDP, landscape PUDP, and conflict PUDP) with the weighted overlay of land use data, then uses machine learning to examine the relationship between PUDP, POI of traditional food restaurant, and VOCs. Results: The study generates three types of PUDP which are open PUDP, landscape PUDP, and conflict PUDP. VOCs and POI of traditional restaurant have a strong correlation, and both have a significant negative correlation with open PUDP. However, the landscape PUDP and conflict PUDP do not show an obvious relationship with food POI and VOCs. Conclusion: The results indicate that the future urban ecology should consider restaurant location, VOCs from restaurants, and their relationship to urban land use data as they have a strong relationship. In this study, the standard tent used by the China International Medical Team (Sichuan) was used as the research object to study the internal temperature change in medical tents in a low-temperature environment relying on heating equipment. Method: Four temperature sensors were arranged along the horizontal direction at a 1.2 m height in the medical tent, and more sensors were installed at heights of 0.1, 0.2, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 2.5 m. A total of 11 temperature sensors were set. Temperature tests were conducted in January and February 2021 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. During the test, the running time of the heating equipment was controlled in real time according to the temperature change trend. A Kolmogorov–Smirnov(K-S) test was used to verify the reliability of the experimental data. The temperature change trend was used to characterize the influence of the heating and cooling equipment on the temperature change inside the tent. Results: Due to the position angle of the heating equipment and the influence of the external environment, the spatial distribution of the ambient temperature inside the medical tent was obviously uneven. In winter, an electric heater with a heating power of about 2500 W can increase the internal temperature of the tent to 16.7 °C, significantly improving the internal thermal environment of the medical tent. The ambient temperature in the medical tent is positively correlated with the height and the installation position of the heating equipment. Conclusion: Medical tents can maintain the ambient temperature well to meet medical needs with the support of heating equipment with sufficient power. The temperature distribution law of medical tents in this experiment has good guiding significance for the placement angle of heating equipment and the configuration position of medical equipment and provides a reference for the development of thermal insulation materials for medical tents. PM2.5 particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm are receiving increasing attention in China. Understanding how complex factors affect PM2.5 particles is crucial for the prevention of air pollution. This study investigated the influence of meteorological factors and land use on the dynamics of PM2.5 concentrations in four urban agglomerations of China at different scales from 2010 to 2020, using the Durbin spatial domain model (SDM) at five different grid scales. The results showed that the average annual PM2.5 concentration in four core urban agglomerations in China generally had a downward trend, and the meteorological factors and land use types were closely related to the PM2.5 concentration. The impact of temperature on PM2.5 changed significantly with an increase in grid scale, while other factors did not lead to obvious changes. The direct and spillover effects of different factors on PM2.5 in inland and coastal urban agglomerations were not entirely consistent. The influence of wind speed on coastal urban clusters (the Pearl River urban agglomeration (PRD) and Yangtze River urban agglomeration (YRD)) was not significant among the meteorological factors, but it had a significant impact on inland urban clusters (the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration (BTH) and Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomeration (CC)). The direct effect of land use type factors showed an obvious U-shaped change with an increase in the research scale in the YRD, and the direct effect of land use type factors was almost twice as large as the spillover effect. Among land use type factors, human factors (impermeable surfaces) were found to have a greater impact in inland urban agglomerations, while natural factors (forests) had a greater impact in coastal urban agglomerations. Therefore, targeted policies to alleviate PM2.5 should be formulated in inland and coastal urban agglomerations, combined with local climate measures such as artificial precipitation, and urban land planning should be carried out under the consideration of known impacts. In the realm of daily activity planning, precise weather forecasting services hold paramount significance. However, the prevalent dissemination of weather forecasts through conventional channels like radio, television, and the internet often yields only generalized regional predictions. This limitation contributes to diminished forecast reach, inadequate accuracy, and a lack of individualization, thwarting the effective distribution of meteorological insights and inhibiting the fulfillment of personalized forecast demands. Addressing these concerns, our study proposes a personalized weather forecasting approach that harnesses machine learning techniques and leverages the 5G messaging platform. By amalgamating projected user travel data, we augment personalized weather reports and extend user coverage to achieve tailored, timely, and high-quality weather services. Concretely, our research commences with an extensive analysis of large-scale user travel behavior data to extract pertinent travel attributes. Subsequently, we construct a user's future location prediction model—dubbed the Loc-PredModel—by employing the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to forecast users' trip destinations and arrival times. Anchored in the anticipated outcomes of user travel behavior, personalized weather data reports are formulated. Experimental results underscore the Loc-PredModel's remarkable predictive prowess, demonstrating a root mean squared error (RMSE) value of 0.208 and a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.935, affirming its efficacy in prognosticating users' trip destinations and arrival times. Furthermore, our 5G message-driven platform, rooted in intelligent personalized meteorological services, underwent testing within Chengdu city and garnered positive user feedback. Our research effectively surmounts the limitations of conventional weather forecasting platforms by furnishing users with more precise and customized weather information predicated on behavioral analysis and the 5G information ecosystem. This study not only advances the theoretical groundwork of intelligent meteorology but also offers invaluable insights and guidance for future advancement. Black carbon (BC), an important component of atmospheric aerosol, plays a significant role in regional climate, hydrological cycle, variation of monsoon rainfall, and human health. The 40-year detailed atmospheric BC over China from 1981 to 2020 is systematically investigated through the MERRA-2 reanalysis dataset. MERRA-2 BC generally showed a good correlation (R = 0.68) compared with 673 monthly samples from ground-based observation at 35 stations around China. The overall annual average of MERRA-2 BC concentration over China is 1.15 μg/m3, with a fast growth rate during 1981–2007 and a relatively slow decrease after that. The winter season has the highest mean concentration of BC, followed by autumn and spring, whereas summer shows relatively weaker values. The order of annual average BC concentrations during 1981–2020 is Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH, 4.02 μg/m3) > Sichuan Basin (SB, 3.94 μg/m3) > Yangtze River Delta (YRD, 2.68 μg/m3) > Pearl River Delta (PRD, 1.47 μg/m3). The monthly mean BC concentrations over the BTH, YRD, PRD and SB are estimated to be smallest 3.18 μg/m3 in May, 1.94 μg/m3 in August, 0.82 μg/m3 in July, 3.04 μg/m3 in June, respectively, whilst largest consistently in December with 5.09 μg/m3, 3.83 μg/m3, 2.12 μg/m3, and 5.41 μg/m3, respectively. Our study indicates the primary potential source areas for BC are concentrated in the research city and its surroundings. Beijing and Chengdu are more BC-polluted areas than Shanghai and Guangzhou. Long-distance, regional transfer from south BTH contributes importantly to BC pollution in Beijing under the influence of prevailing southerly winds. Monitoring particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) is of great importance to assess its adverse effects on human health, especially densely populated regions. In this paper, an improved linear mixed effect model (LMEM) was developed. The model introduced meteorological variable, column water vapor (CWV), which has as the same resolution as satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness (AOT), to enhance PM2.5 estimation accuracy by considering spatiotemporal consistency of CWV and AOT. The model was implemented to urban agglomeration of Chengdu Plain during 2015. The results show that model accuracy has been improved significantly compared to linear regression model (R2 = 0.49), with R2 of 0.81 and root mean squared prediction error (RMSPE) of 15.47 μg/m3, mean prediction error (MPE) of 11.09 μg/m3, and effectively revealed the characteristics of spatiotemporal variations PM2.5 level across the study area: The PM2.5 level is higher in the central and southern areas with dense population, while it is lower in the northwest and southwest mountain areas; and the PM2.5 level is higher during autumn and winter, while it is lower during spring and summer. As air quality has improved rapidly in recent years, the public has become more interested in whether a famous snow peak, Yaomei Feng on the Tibetan Plateau, can be seen from Chengdu, a megacity located on the western plain of the Sichuan Basin, east of the plateau. Therefore, a threshold-method-based forecasting system for snow peak sighting was developed in this study. Variables from numerical models, including cloud–water mixing ratio, cloud cover over snow peak, water mixing ratio, PM2.5 concentration, and ground solar radiation, were used in the snow peak sighting forecast system. Terrain occlusion rate of each model grid was calculated. Monte Carlo simulations were applied for threshold determination. A WRF-CMAQ hindcast was conducted for 2020, owing to insufficient observation data, hindcast results on the snow peak sighting were compared with posts collected from social media. Estimations showed that the snow peak sighting forecast system performed well in reflecting the monthly trend of snow peak sightings, and the hindcast results matched the daily observations, especially from May to August. Accuracy of the snow peak sighting forecast model was 78.9%, recall value was 57.1%, and precision was 24.4%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to realize low-carbon and high-quality development, this study took the carbon emissions of each district and county in the Chengdu–Chongqing region from 2005 to 2017 as the research object and used the spatial autocorrelation model to analyze the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of carbon emissions in the counties of the Chengdu–Chongqing region, so as to fill in the research blank of carbon emissions in the counties of the Chengdu–Chongqing region. Then, the geographical detector model is used to explore the interaction among influencing factors of carbon emissions and reveal the time changes and regional differences of influencing factors, so as to improve the lack of spatial and temporal heterogeneity of influencing factors of carbon emissions by geographical detector. The results show the following: (i) The overall carbon emissions of counties show a year-on-year growth trend with the main urban areas of Chengdu and Chongqing as the core, but the growth rate slows down after 2010. (ii) The carbon emissions showed a significant positive spatial autocorrelation, and the neighboring counties showed a spatial clustering characteristic of "high-high" or "low-low", and the clustering status tended to be enhanced. (iii) The carbon emissions are strongly influenced by industrial structure, economic development, investment level, financial situation, urbanization rate and social consumption, and their interactions are all enhanced, but the influence mostly tends to rise first and then fall. (iv) County carbon emissions can be divided into four types of geographical types, such as population size influencing type, urbanization rate influencing type, economic development influencing type and industrial structure influencing type. Therefore, a variety of factors need to be considered comprehensively, a multi-pronged approach, and a comprehensive policy to realize low-carbon transformation in the Chengdu–Chongqing region. The expansion of urban areas and the increase in the number of buildings and urbanization characteristics, such as roads, affect the meteorological environment in urban areas, resulting in weakened pollutant dispersion. First, this paper uses GIS (geographic information system) spatial analysis technology and landscape ecology analysis methods to analyze the dynamic changes in land cover and landscape patterns in Chengdu as a result of urban development. Second, the most appropriate WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model parameterization scheme is selected and screened. Land-use data from different development stages in the city are included in the model, and the wind speed and temperature results simulated using new and old land-use data (1980 and 2015) are evaluated and compared. Finally, the results of the numerical simulations by the WRF-Chem air quality model using new and old land-use data are coupled with 0.25° × 0.25°-resolution MEIC (Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China) emission source data from Tsinghua University. The results of the sensitivity experiments using the WRF-Chem model for the city under different development conditions and during different periods are discussed. The meteorological conditions and pollution sources remained unchanged as the land-use data changed, which revealed the impact of urban land-use changes on the simulation results of PM2.5 atmospheric pollutants. The results show the following. (1) From 1980 to 2015, the land-use changes in Chengdu were obvious, and cultivated land exhibited the greatest changes, followed by forestland. Under the influence of urban land-use dynamics and human activities, both the richness and evenness of the landscape in Chengdu increased. (2) The microphysical scheme WSM3 (WRF Single–Moment 3 class) and land-surface scheme SLAB (5-layer diffusion scheme) were the most suitable for simulating temperatures and wind speeds in the WRF model. The wind speed and temperature simulation results using the 2015 land-use data were better than those using the 1980 land-use data when assessed according to the coincidence index and correlation coefficient. (3) The WRF-Chem simulation results obtained for PM2.5 using the 2015 land-use data were better than those obtained using the 1980 land-use data in terms of the correlation coefficient and standard deviation. The concentration of PM2.5 in urban areas was higher than that in the suburbs, and the concentration of PM2.5 was lower on Longquan Mountain in Chengdu than in the surrounding areas. Nowadays, many cities in China are suffering from both fine particulate matter (PM2.5, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 µm) and ozone (O3) pollution. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is an important component of PM2.5 and is closely related to the oxidation processes. To investigate the characteristics and formation pathways of SOA during different types of haze pollution episodes, carbonaceous components of PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored continuously in Chengdu in April 2019, when Chengdu experienced not only PM2.5 pollution (SPP) but also a complex pollution of PM2.5 and O3 (CoP). In the CoP episode, the concentrations of SOA increased by 51.2% as compared to SPP, and the SOA concentrations were positively correlated with PM2.5 mass concentrations. These suggest that SOA drove the increase in PM2.5 levels during the haze event to some extent. The preliminary VOC source analysis based on the feature ratio showed that vehicle emission and fuel volatilization sources were the main sources of VOCs at this urban site. In addition, coal emissions and biomass burning were also important contributors. High-carbon alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons significantly contributed to the SOA formation. These results provide a preliminary understanding of SOA formation during different types of pollution episodes in Chengdu, which can help us to further understand air pollution in this typical region. Urbanization promotes the development of the subway system, and the particulate matter (PM) concentrations inside have received increasing attention. This study first measured the dynamic PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in a metro carriage in Chengdu and explored the dominant influencing factors. The personal inhalation intakes of different routes were evaluated. The results showed that the in-carriage PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations ranged from 11 to 74 μg/m3 (mean: 36.7 μg/m3) and 13 to 89 μg/m3 (mean: 40.1 μg/m3), respectively. When the train passed from the overground to underground, the in-carriage PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations increased by 30.4% and 32.9%, respectively. No specific linear relationship between passenger number and in-carriage PM concentrations was found. In-carriage PM concentrations decreased after the carriage doors were opened on the platforms. PM2.5 inhalation intakes ranged from 1.08 to 9.52, with a mean of 4.24 µg. For the passengers with the same age and sex, the average inhaled PM2.5 intake in the metro carriage on the route with more underground platforms was higher. This study not only revealed the PM characteristics in the Chengdu metro system for the first time, but also provided guidelines for reducing the in-carriage PM concentrations to build a healthier travel environment. Surface ozone (O3) pollution has not improved significantly in recent years. It is still the primary air pollution problem in many megacities in China during summertime. In high temperature and intense radiation weather, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are easily oxidized and degraded to induce O3 pollution. In order to understand the impact of difference between photochemical initial concentration (PIC) of VOCs and the actual measured concentration on O3 formation, a campaign was carried out during O3 pollution in Chengdu (25 July–5 August 2021). During this O3 pollution episode, the maximum value of O3 concentration reached 335.0 μg/m3, and the precursor concentrations increased significantly. The mean values of VOCmeasured and VOCPICs were 19.7 ppbv and 30.7 ppbv, corresponding to O3 formation potential (OFP) of 175.3 μg/m3 and 478.8 μg/m3, respectively, indicating that the consumption of VOCs content could not be ignored. Alkenes accounted for 77.2% of VOCs consumption. Alkenes and aromatics contributed 63.0% and 29.2% to OFP values which derived from PIC of each VOC species. The relative incremental reactivity analysis based on PICs showed that the O3 formation was controlled by the cooperation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and VOCs, and the effect of NOx emission reduction was better. Frequent air pollution due to urbanization poses a severe threat to urban environments. In this study, the effects of urban landscapes on pollutant concentrations at different spatial and temporal scales are examined using "3S" technology, based on land-use (LU) classification maps for two time phases (2015 and 2018) in conjunction with monitoring data for air pollutants of the same periods. The results showed that: (1) A very high overall LU ratio was found for Chengdu Plain urban agglomeration (CPUA), with only 0.3% of the land being unused. Farmlands (43%), forests (36.45%), and grasslands (14.17%) were identified as the main landscape types. A decrease in the proportions of the total area occupied by farmlands and grasslands was 0.44% and 0.72%, respectively, and 0.10%, 0.04%, and 0.97% increased in the proportions of the total area occupied by forests, water bodies, and developed lands, respectively, were found from 2015 to 2018. (2) NO2, PM2.5, and PM10 were mainly distributed in the central and eastern parts of the study area, while SO2 was mainly distributed in the southwest. In 2018, compared with 2015, the maximum concentration of NO2 decreased from 60.36 μg/m3 to 49.75 μg/m3, and the distribution range of high concentration NO2 was reduced and concentrated in Chengdu; the concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 decreased significantly, and the maximum concentration decreased by 20.53% and 23.93%, respectively, but the concentration of pollution in the northeast increased significantly. The scope of SO2 pollution had shifted from the south to the southwest, and the pollution level had decreased from south to north. (3) The effects of various landscape types on pollutant concentrations were complex. At a patch-type level, increasing the area proportions of "pollution-reducing" landscape types could reduce pollutant concentrations. Specifically, increasing the area, largest patch index, and patch cohesion of forests and grasslands, as well as reducing the area, largest patch index, and patch cohesion of farmlands and developed lands, could effectively lower pollutant concentrations. From a landscape pattern perspective, high shape regularity and low diversity of landscape patches resulted in high concentrations of NO2, PM10, and PM2.5. Based on hourly observation data from the aethalometer and GRIMM180 environment particle monitor as well as the simultaneous data of visibility (V), relative humidity (RH) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from October to December in 2017 in Chengdu, the corresponding time series of aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass is retrieved. The generalized additive models (GAMs) are adopted to analyze the non-stationarity of the time series of aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass and to explore the responses of the aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass to the aerosol component structure factors (ρBC/ρPM10, ρPM1/ρPM2.5, ρPM1~2.5/ρPM2.5 and ρPM2.5/ρPM10; ρ represents particle mass concentration) and RH. The results show that through the comparative analysis of stationary and non-stationary models, the time series of aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass in autumn and winter in Chengdu is non-stationary. In addition, the RH and aerosol component structure factors are all significant nonlinear covariates that affect the non-stationarity of the aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass. According to the influence of covariates, the sequence is as follows: RH > ρBC/ρPM10 > ρPM2.5/ρPM10 > ρPM1/ρPM2.5. At PM2.5 pollution concentration (ρPM2.5 > 75 μg m−3), according to the influence of covariates, the sequence is as follows: RH > ρPM1~2.5/ρPM2.5 > ρBC/ρPM10 > ρPM2.5/ρPM10. Moreover, the interaction between RH and aerosol component structure factors significantly affects the aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass. The condition of high RH, high ρPM2.5/ρPM10, high ρPM1/ρPM2.5 and low ρBC/ρPM10 has a synergistic amplification effect on the increase of the aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass. At PM2.5 pollution concentration, the synergistic effect of high RH, high ρPM2.5/ρPM10, high ρPM1~2.5/ρPM2.5 and low ρBC/ρPM10 is beneficial to the increase of the aerosol extinction coefficient per unit of mass. In recent years, haze pollution is frequent, which seriously affects daily life and production process. The main factors to measure the degree of smoke pollution are the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the prediction of PM2.5/PM10 concentration. Since PM2.5 and PM10 concentration data are time series, their time characteristics should be considered in their prediction. However, the traditional neural network is limited by its own structure and has some weakness in processing time related data. Recurrent neural network is a kind of network specially used for sequence data modeling, that is, the current output of the sequence is correlated with the historical output. In this paper, a haze prediction model is established based on a deep recurrent neural network. We obtained air pollution data in Chengdu from the China Air Quality Online Monitoring and Analysis Platform, and conducted experiments based on these data. Air pollution with fluidity can influence a large area for a long time and can be harmful to the ecological environment and human health. Haze, one form of air pollution, has been a critical problem since the industrial revolution. Though the actual cause of haze could be various and complicated, in this paper, we have found out that many gases' distributions and wind power or temperature are related to PM2.5/10's concentration. Thus, based on the correlation between PM2.5/PM10 and other gaseous pollutants and the timing continuity of PM2.5/PM10, we propose a multilayer long short-term memory haze prediction model. This model utilizes the concentration of O3, CO, NO2, SO2, and PM2.5/PM10 in the last 24 h as inputs to predict PM2.5/PM10 concentrations in the future. Besides pre-processing the data, the primary approach to boost the prediction performance is adding layers above a single-layer long short-term memory model. Moreover, it is proved that by doing so, we could let the network make predictions more accurately and efficiently. Meteorological conditions significantly influence air pollution. The Chengdu plain, with few external pollution sources and homogeneous meteorological conditions, is a natural lab to study the effects of meteorological elements on the diffusion and dissipation of pollutants. Large-scale and long-duration haze events occurred all over China during the Spring Festival in 2014. This study tries to detect the characteristics and the formation mechanisms of this haze event in the Chengdu area using air quality and the meteorological monitoring of this event. The results showed that, when considering the concentration changes of the primary pollutant, this haze event could be divided into three stages: Stage 1, the concentration of all pollutions increased; Stage 2, the concentration of gaseous pollutants decreased, while that of particulate matter increased; Stage 3, the concentration of all pollutants decreased. Adverse atmospheric circulation, unfavorable meteorological conditions (lower air temperature and wind speed, higher air pressure and relative humidity), a frequently occurring inversion layer (with a strong intensity and lower bottom), and the low height of the mixing layer resulted in this haze. This study suggests that not only surface meteorological factors, but also the boundary layer structure, played an important role in the vertical diffusion of the pollutants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution has become a serious environmental issue in major urban agglomerations in China. To investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and regional transports of O3 in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH-UA), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD-UA), the Triangle of Central China (TC-UA), Chengdu–Chongqing (CY-UA), and the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration (PRD-UA), multiple transdisciplinary methods were employed to analyze the O3-concentration data that were collected from national air quality monitoring networks operated by the China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC). It was found that although ozone concentrations have decreased in recent years, ozone pollution is still a serious issue in China. O3 exhibited different spatiotemporal patterns in the five urban agglomerations. In terms of monthly variations, O3 had a unimodal structure in BTH-UA but a bimodal structure in the other urban agglomerations. The maximum O3 concentration was in autumn in PRD-UA, but in summer in the other urban agglomerations. In spatial distribution, the main distribution of O3 concentration was aligned in northeast–southwest direction for BTH-UA and CY-UA, but in northwest–southeast direction for YRD-UA, TC-UA, and PRD-UA. O3 concentrations exhibited positive spatial autocorrelations in BTH-UA, YRD-UA, and TC-UA, but negative spatial autocorrelations in CY-UA and PRD-UA. Variations in O3 concentration were more affected by weather fluctuations in coastal cities while the variations were more affected by seasonal changes in inland cities. O3 transport in the center cities of the five urban agglomerations was examined by backward trajectory and potential source analyses. Local areas mainly contributed to the O3 concentrations in the five cities, but regional transport also played a significant role. Sichuan Basin is one of the most densely populated areas in China and the world. Human activities have great impact on the air quality. In order to understand the characteristics of overall air pollutants in Sichuan Basin in recent years, we analyzed the concentrations of six air pollutants monitored in 22 cities during the period from January 2015 to December 2020. During the study period, the annual average concentrations of CO, NO2, SO2, PM2.5 and PM10 all showed a clear downward trend, while the ozone concentration was slowly increasing. The spatial patterns of CO and SO2 were similar. High-concentration areas were mainly located in the western plateau of Sichuan Basin, while the concentrations of NO2 and particulate matter were more prominent in the urban agglomerations inside the basin. During the study period, changes of the monthly average concentrations for pollutants (except for O3) conformed to the U-shaped pattern, with the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. In the southern cities of the basin, secondary sources had a higher contribution to the generation of fine particulate matter, while in large cities inside the basin, such as Chengdu and Chongqing, air pollution had a strong correlation with automobile exhaust emissions. The heavy pollution incidents observed in the winter of 2017 were mainly caused by the surrounding plateau terrain with typical stagnant weather conditions. This finding was also supported by the backward trajectory analysis, which showed that the air masses arrived in Chengdu were mainly from the western plateau area of the basin. Air pollution is becoming increasingly serious along with social and economic development in the southwest of China. The distribution characteristics of particle matter (PM) were studied in Chengdu from 2016 to 2017, and the changes of PM bearing water-soluble ions and heavy metals and the distribution of secondary ions were analyzed during the haze episode. The results showed that at different pollution levels, heavy metals were more likely to be enriched in fine particles and may be used as a tracer of primary pollution sources. The water-soluble ions in PM2.5 were mainly Sulfate-Nitrate-Ammonium (SNA) accounting for 43.02%, 24.23%, 23.50%, respectively. SO42−, NO3−, NH4+ in PM10 accounted for 34.56%, 27.43%, 19.18%, respectively. It was mainly SO42− in PM at Clean levels (PM2.5 = 0~75 μg/m3, PM10 = 0~150 μg/m3), and mainly NH4+ and NO3− at Light-Medium levels (PM2.5 = 75~150 μg/m3, PM10 = 150~350 μg/m3). At Heavy levels (PM2.5 = 150~250 μg/m3, PM10 = 350~420 μg/m3), it is mainly SO42− in PM2.5, and mainly NH4+ and NO3− in PM10. The contribution of mobile sources to the formation of haze in the study area was significant. With the continuous progress of air pollution prevention and control in China, the study of the emission characteristics of vehicles has become increasingly important. An in situ experiment was performed in the Tianfu tunnel in Chengdu to determine the vehicle emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A total of 50 species of VOCs were quantified in the tunnel, with total concentrations in the range of 32.25–162.18 ppbv in the entrance and 52.90–233.92 ppbv in the exit, respectively. Alkanes were the most abundant group, followed by alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygenated VOCs, alkynes and chlorocarbons. The general emission factors of the measured VOCs ranged from 141.71 mg veh−1 km−1 to 236.12 mg veh−1 km−1, and the average ± std was 177.31 ± 24.59 mg veh−1 km−1. The emission factors of diesel-fuelled vehicles, gasoline-fuelled vehicles and natural gas-fuelled vehicles were estimated based on linear regression analysis, with values of 272.39 ± 191.17 mg veh−1 km−1, 185.08 ± 12.85 mg veh−1 km−1 and 158.72 ± 3.21 mg veh−1 km−1, respectively. The results of roadside experiments indicate that the roadside ambience atmosphere contains many species characterized with vehicle emission features. The Model Output Statistics (MOS) model is a dynamic statistical weather forecast model based on multiple linear regression technology. It is greatly affected by the selection of parameters and predictors, especially when the weather changes drastically, or extreme weather occurs. We improved the traditional MOS model with the machine learning method to enhance the capabilities of self-learning and generalization. Simultaneously, multi-source meteorological data were used as the input to the model to improve the data quality. In the experiment, we selected the four areas of Nanjing, Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou for verification, with the numerical weather prediction (NWP) products and observation data from automatic weather stations (AWSs) used to predict the temperature and wind speed in the next 24 h. From the experiment, it can be seen that the accuracy of the prediction values and speed of the method were improved by the ML-MOS. Finally, we compared the ML-MOS model with neural networks and support vector machine (SVM), the results show that the prediction result of the ML-MOS model is better than that of the above two models. Ground-level ozone (O3), which is mainly from the photochemical reactions of NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), has become a crucial pollutant obstructing air quality improvement in China. Understanding the composition, temporal variability and source apportionment of VOCs is necessary for determining effective control measures to minimize VOCs and their related photochemical pollution. To provide a comprehensive analysis of VOC sources and their contributions to ozone formation in the city of Chengdu—a megacity with the highest rates of industrial and economic development in southwest China—we conducted a one-month monitoring project at three urban sites (Shuangliu, Xindu, Junpingjie; SL, XD and JPJ, respectively) along the main north–south meteorological transport channel before and during the implemented control measures. Alkanes were the dominant group at each site, contributing to around 50% of the observed total VOCs, followed by oxygen-containing VOCs (OVOCs), aromatics, halohydrocarbons and alkenes. During the control period, the mixing ratios of most measured VOC species decreased, and O3 concentrations were down by at least 20%. VOC species experiencing the most effect from control were aromatics and OVOCs, which had higher O3 formation reactivity. This indicated that the control policies had significant influence on reductions of reactive VOC species. We also identified VOC sources at SL and XD using positive matrix factorization (PMF) and assessed their contributions to photochemical O3 formation by calculating the O3 formation potential (OFP) based on mass concentrations and maximum incremental reactivity of related VOCs. Five dominant VOC sources were identified, with the highest contributions from vehicular exhaust and fuel evaporation before control, followed by solvent utilization, biogenic background and secondary formation, and industrial emissions. Contribution from vehicular exhaust was reduced the most at SL, while at XD, secondary formation VOCs decreased significantly. VOCs from vehicular and industrial emissions and solvent utilization were found to be the dominant precursors for OFPs, particularly the species of xylenes, toluene and propene. Our results therefore suggest that priority should be given to the alleviation of photochemical pollutants for effective control of O3 formation in Chengdu.
