A new algorithm is proposed to estimate the cooling amplitude over North China induced by each Ural blocking event. Taking full account of potential transient temperature rises during the cooling process and the lag time of cooling relative to the blocking, this algorithm provides more detailed analysis which should not be possible by using former methods. The amplitude of the Ural blocking-related cooling events is found to have a broad distribution. Further, although most Ural blocking events lead to severe cold surges over North China, the number of Ural blocking events that do not induce significant cooling over North China cannot be ignored. The possible reasons for the wide range in cooling amplitude are explored in terms of the lifetimes and geographical centers of the blocking highs, the circulation patterns preceding the onset of the cooling events, and the snowfall associated with cooling events. Larger amplitude cooling events occur in Ural blocking highs that have longer lifetimes and northwestward displacements of their geographical centers. The northward displacement of a Ural blocking center favors the advection of extremely cold air from the Arctic regions, which accumulates in West Siberia and subsequently gives rise to the most severe cold surges over North China. The lack of activities of cold surges before the blocking-related cooling events not only amplifies the cooling amplitude directly, but also increases the occurrence probabilities of snowfalls through its modulation on the local specific humidity. In the China VI regulations for light-duty vehicles, the (RDE) test is introduced as a supplementary test procedure. In the actual test process, the RDE results are more significantly influenced by driving behavior and vehicle type. To reduce the test cost, the NOx and PN prediction models are established based on the GA-BP method. The results showed that the coefficients of determination of the GA-BP model for NOx and PN predictions are all greater than 0.9 and are linearly highly correlated at the instantaneous emission level. At the overall emission level, the overall error of the GA-BP model is less than 7% for NOx prediction and less than 6% for PN prediction. The model has high accuracy for both instantaneous and overall emissions of light-duty vehicles. This provides practical engineering value for guiding the RDE test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The values of ratio a of the linear relationship between specific attenuation and specific differential phase vary significantly in convective storms as a result of resonance scattering. The best-linear-fit ratio a at X band is determined using the modified attenuation correction algorithm based on differential phase and attenuation, as well as the premise that reflectivity is unattenuated in S band radar detection. Meanwhile, the systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar and S band radar and water layer attenuation (ZW) on the wet antenna cover of the X band radar are also considered. The good performance of the modified correction algorithm is demonstrated in a moderate rainfall event. The data were collected by four X band dual-polarization (X-POL) radar sites, namely, BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ, and a China's New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD/SA radar) site, BJSDX, in Beijing on 20 July 2016. Ratio a is calculated for each volume scan of the X band radar, with a mean value of 0.26 dB deg−1 varying from 0.20 to 0.31 dB deg−1. The average values of systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar (at BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ) and S band radar (at BJSDX) are 0, −3, 2, and 0 dB, respectively. The experimentally determined ZW is in substantial agreement with the theoretically calculated ones, and their values are an order of magnitude smaller than rain attenuation. The comparison of the modified attenuation correction algorithm and the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm is further evaluated at the X-POL radar. It is shown that the modified attenuation correction algorithm in the present paper provides higher correction accuracy for rain attenuation than the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm. The capability to estimate monsoon rainfall is investigated by using S-band polarimetric radar (S-POL) and two-dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) during 2017–2018 in South China. Based on 2 years of 2DVD raindrop size distribution (DSD) observations of monsoon precipitation systems, four different quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) algorithms were obtained, including R(ZH), R(ZH, ZDR), R(KDP), and R(KDP, ZDR). In order to clearly demarcate the optimal ranges of the four QPE algorithms by considering the impact of the monsoon precipitation system of South China, the optimal ranges of the four QPE algorithms were integrated together according to the characteristics of different QPE algorithms in the reflectivity-differential reflectivity (ZH-ZDR) space distribution by reference to 8 monsoon rainfall events from 2016 to 2020 observed in Guangzhou and Yangjiang S-POL. Then, an optimal algorithm was proposed for the quantitative estimation of monsoon precipitation in South China (2DVD-SCM) using S-POL. The 2DVD-SCM was tested by comparing it with a traditional radar QPE algorithm PPS (WSR-88D Precipitation Processing System); a classical QPE algorithm CSU-HIDRO (Colorado State University-Hydrometeor Identification Rainfall Optimization) for the polarimetric radar; a piecewise fitting algorithm LPA-PFM (Piecewise Fitting Method) based on laser raindrop spectrum. The rainfall event one-by-one test results show that the 2DVD-SCM algorithm performs obviously better than the other three algorithms in most of the rainfall events. The hourly accumulated rainfalls estimated by the 2DVD-SCM algorithm are agreed well with rain gauge observations. The normalized errors (NE) and the root mean square errors (RMSE) values of 2DVD-SCM are remarkably less than the other three algorithms, and the correlation coefficient (CC) values are higher. The results of the classified rain rate test show that the NE and RMSE values of the 2DVD-SCM algorithm are the lowest in all classified rain rates. The overall evaluation results show that the 2DVD-SCM algorithm performs obviously better than the existing three algorithms and have the potential to apply in S-band polarimetric radar monsoon rainfall estimation operational system in South China.
