An unusually persistent and heavy rainfall event occurred in Hainan Island from 1 to 9 October 2010, in association with one extended tropical depression (TD) over the South China Sea (SCS). Based on rain-gauge precipitation, satellite altimetry, in situ Argo profile, air–sea enthalpy flux, and reanalysis data, this study investigates the impact of warm ocean anomalies in the SCS on the formation and intensification of the extended TD, and their reinforcing effect on TD-related heavy rainfall. The TD intensified and migrated northward to the vicinity of Hainan Island. A thicker-than-normal warm subsurface layer that was present beneath the positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies contained a sufficient upper-ocean heat content to effectively restrain the TD's self-induced SST cooling effect, and available enthalpy fluxes were therefore sufficient to support the maintenance of the TD. The composite analyses confirm the reinforcing effect of warm oceanic anomalies in the central SCS off the south-central coast of Vietnam on heavy rainfall in Hainan Island, with the composite precipitation of "Warm eddy" cases being significantly larger in Hainan Island and northern Vietnam than that of the "Normal" cases, using reanalysis and remote sensing precipitation data over 29 years (1993–2021). A sensitive, compact detector for the simultaneous measurement of O3 and NO2 is presented in this work. There are two channels in the detector, namely the Ox channel and the NO2 channel. In the presence of excess NO, ambient O3 is converted to NO2 in the Ox measurement channel. In both channels, NO2 is directly detected via cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) at 409 nm. At a 10 s integration time, the Ox and NO2 channels have a 1σ precision of 14.5 and 13.5 pptv, respectively. The Allan deviation plot shows that the optimal sensitivity of O3 and NO2 occurs at an integration time of ~60 s, with values of 10.2 and 8.5 pptv, respectively. The accuracy is 6% for the O3 channel and 5% for the NO2 channel, and the largest uncertainty comes from the effective NO2 absorption cross-section. Intercomparison of the NO2 detection between the NO2 and Ox channels shows good agreement within their uncertainties, with an absolute shift of 0.31 ppbv, a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.99 and a slope of 0.98. Further intercomparison for ambient O3 measurement between the O3/NO2-CRDS developed in this work and a commercial UV O3 monitor also shows excellent agreement, with linear regression slopes close to unity and an R2 value of 0.99 for 1 min averaged data. The system was deployed to measure O3 and NO2 concentrations in Hefei, China, and the observation results show obvious diurnal variation characteristics. A crucial and fundamental type of precipitation monitoring is the automatic observation of precipitation by ground stations. However, the typical quality control methods that are applied to rainfall present restrictions because of their discontinuities in time and space. The multi-component comprehensive consistency approach is a subjective quality control method that uses changes in other weather components associated with the precipitation process. The present study determined the reference weather components for precipitation by calculating the correlation coefficients between weather components and precipitation, and the proportions that passed the significance tests. These components included air pressure, visibility, relative humidity, wind speed, temperature difference, and the sum of cloud covers of 125–875 hPa. This study introduced various gridded fusion products to fill in the empty spaces of weather components, and put forward a scoring method to convert a subjective method into an objective method. The outcomes of the scoring method are assessed using the artificial quality control results. The evaluation's findings demonstrate that the scoring method's accuracy in every period of precipitation is greater than 0.75, meeting the need for objective quality control of real-time surface precipitation. A polarized micropulse lidar (P-MPL) employing a pulsed laser at 532 nm was developed by the Institute of Oceanographic Instrumentation, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences). The optomechanical structure, technical parameters, detection principle, overlap factor calculation method, and inversion methods of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) depth and depolarization ratio (DR) were introduced. Continuous observations using the P-MPL were carried out at Xi'an Meteorological Bureau, and the observation data were analyzed. In this study, we gleaned much information on aerosols and clouds, including the temporal and spatial variation of aerosols and clouds, aerosol extinction coefficient, DR, and the structure of ABL were obtained by the P-MPL. The variation of aerosols and clouds before and after a short rainfall was analyzed by combining time-height-indication (THI) of range corrected signal (RCS) and DR was obtained by the P-MPL with profiles of potential temperature (PT) and relative humidity (RH) detected by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde. Then, the characteristics of tropopause cirrus cloud were discussed using the data of DR, PT, and RH. Finally, a haze process from January 1st to January 5th was studied by using aerosol extinction coefficients obtained by the P-MPL, PT, and RH profiles measured by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde and the time-varying of PM2.5 and PM10 observed by ambient air quality monitor. Near-surface wind data are particularly important for Hainan Island and the South China Sea, and there is a wide range of wind data sources. A detailed understanding of the reliability of these datasets can help us to carry out related research. In this study, the hourly near-surface wind data from the High-Resolution China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (HRCLDAS) and the fifth-generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis data (ERA5) were evaluated by comparison with the ground automatic meteorological observation data for Hainan Island and the South China Sea. The results are as follows: (1) the HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data trend was basically the same as the observation data trend, but there was a smaller bias, smaller root-mean-square errors, and higher correlation coefficients between the near-surface wind data from HRCLDAS and the observations; (2) the quality of HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data was better over the islands of the South China Sea than over Hainan Island land. However, over the coastal areas of Hainan Island and island stations near Sansha, the quality of the HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5; (3) the quality of HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5 over different types of landforms. The deviation of ERA5 and HRCLDAS wind speed was the largest along the coast, and the quality of the ERA5 wind direction data was poorest over the mountains, whereas that of HRCLDAS was poorest over hilly areas; (4) the accuracy of HRCLDAS at all wind levels was higher than that of ERA5. ERA5 significantly overestimated low-grade winds and underestimated high-grade winds. The accuracy of HRCLDAS wind ratings over the islands of the South China Sea was significantly higher than that over Hainan Island land, especially for the higher wind ratings; and (5) in the typhoon process, the simulation of wind by HRCLDAS was closer to the observations, and its simulation of higher wind speeds was more accurate than the ERA5 simulations.
