The frequency of El Niño occurrences in southern Africa surpasses the norm, resulting in erratic weather patterns that significantly impact food security, particularly in Zimbabwe. The effects of these weather patterns posit that El Niño occurrences have contributed to the diminished maize yields. The objective is to give guidelines to policymakers, researchers, and agricultural stakeholders for taking proactive actions to address the immediate and lasting impacts of El Niño and enhance the resilience of the agricultural industry. This brief paper provides prospective strategies for farmers to anticipate and counteract the El Niño-influenced dry season projected for 2023/24 and beyond. The coefficient of determination R2 between yield and ENSO was low; 11 of the 13 El Niño seasons had a negative detrended yield anomaly, indicating the strong association between El Nino's effects and the reduced maize yields in Zimbabwe. The R2 between the Oceanic Nino Index (ONI) and rainfall (43%) and between rainfall and yield (39%) indirectly affects the association between ONI and yield. To safeguard farmers' livelihoods and improve their preparedness for droughts in future agricultural seasons, this paper proposes a set of strategic, tactical, and operational decision-making guidelines that the agriculture industry should follow. The importance of equipping farmers with weather and climate information and guidance on drought and heat stress was underscored, encompassing strategies such as planting resilient crop varieties, choosing resilient livestock, and implementing adequate fire safety measures. The Tarim Basin is a large inland arid basin in the arid region of northwest China and has been experiencing significant "warming and wetting" since 1987. As a result, the purpose of this paper is to determine whether the climate transition phenomenon occurred in the Tarim Basin as well as the role of atmospheric circulation in this process. We use meteorological data and atmospheric circulation indexes to study the seasonal trends of climate change in this region from 1987 to 2020 to understand how they are affected by atmospheric circulation. The findings show that, from 1987 to 2020, the Tarim Basin experienced significant warming and wetting; with the exception of the winter scale, all other seasonal scales exhibited a clear warming and wetting trend. From the perspective of spatial distribution, most of the areas showed a significant warming trend, and the warming amplitude around the basin is greater than that in the central area of the basin. However, there are significant regional differences in precipitation change rates. Meanwhile, wavelet analysis shows that there is a significant oscillation period of 17–20 years between climate change and the atmospheric circulation index during 1987–2020. The correlation analysis shows that the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are the main influencing factors of climate change in the Tarim Basin at different seasonal scales, while the teleconnection of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is low and the PDO dominates the summer and autumn temperature changes in the Tarim Basin. As the most significant interannual signal in the tropical Pacific, the influence of ENSO on the interannual variability in TC genesis location in the western North Pacific (WNP) has received much attention in previous studies. This paper mainly emphasizes the underlying SST factors independent of the ENSO signal and explores how they modulate interannual tropical cyclone genesis (TCG) latitude variability. Our study finds that the meridional sea temperature gradient (SSTG) between the Kuroshio Extension and the WNP still has a significant effect on the interannual variability in the TCG latitude after removing the effect of ENSO (r = 0.6). The interannual forecasts of the TCG latitude were effectively improved from 0.67 to 0.81 when the ENSO-independent SSTG and ENSO were regressed together in a multi-linear regression. We then propose an ENSO-independent physical mechanism affecting the TCG latitude. The equatorward (poleward) SSTG excited the positive (negative) Pacific–Japan telecorrelation pattern over the WNP, forming Rossby wave trains and propagating northward. A significant cyclonic vortex (anticyclonic vortex) with strong convective development (suppression) developed near 20° N, leading more TCs to the northern (southern) part of the WNP. Previous studies have demonstrated that the influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the Euro-Atlantic atmospheric circulation varies considerably during the boreal winter. Compared to the late winter (January–March) relationship, the early winter (November–December) teleconnection is more uncertain and less understood. In this paper, we revisited this early winter regional ENSO teleconnection using the Hadley Centre Global Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature (HadISST) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) fifth generation reanalysis (ERA5) datasets for the period 1979–2022. It was found that the signal projected well onto the second dominant mode of Euro-Atlantic atmospheric variability, the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP), rather than the previously mentioned North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This influence is associated with ENSO-induced dipolar convection anomalies in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea (GMCA), which leads to an EAP via exciting Rossby waves propagating northward into the North Atlantic. We further revealed that this ENSO–EAP teleconnection underwent a pronounced interdecadal strengthening around the late 1990s. Prior to the late 1990s, the convective response to ENSO in the GMCA was weak. The atmospheric responses over the Euro-Atlantic were mainly driven by the ENSO-induced convective forcing in the tropical Indian Ocean, which favors an NAO-like pattern. In contrast, since the late 1990s, ENSO has induced stronger precipitation anomalies in the GMCA, which exert a dominant influence on the Euro-Atlantic atmospheric circulation and produce an EAP. The first paper focuses on the impact of the El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) on South American rainfall during austral spring [[9]]. Since these sub-periods include years under ENSO extremes, the authors could study the ENSO impact on the mean climatic states in different AMO/PDO phases. The objective of this paper is to estimate the trend of the Total Ozone Column (TOC) over Togo. A Multi-Sensor Reanalysis-2 (MSR-2) of the TOC over the entire territory of Togo was used. A Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) method has been applied to retrieve the interannual contributions of different forcings and the long-term variability. It was found that the Annual Oscillation (AnO), the Quasi Biennial Oscillation at 30 mb (QBO30), the Solar Flux (SF), and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a statistically significant influence on the interannual variability of the TOC. The strongest contribution (22 ± 1.4 DU) is allocated to the AnO while the weakest (<1 DU) is attributed to the Semi-Annual Oscillations (SAnO). Before the peak year of the Equivalent Effective Stratospheric Chlorine (EESC) in the tropics in 1997, the trend is negative (−0.3% ± 0.9% per decade) and is not statistically significant. After the peak year, a statistically significant positive trend is observed. The trend of the TOC is 0.6% ± 0.2% per decade. The monthly TOC trend over Togo is positive and statistically significant during the rainy season (particularly during the monsoon period) except in April, unlike during the harmattan period (DJF), where the trend is not significant. Heavy rainfall under the conditions of the changing climate has recently garnered considerable attention. The statistics on heavy daily rainfall offer vital information for assessing present and future extreme events and for clarifying the impacts of global climate variability and change, working to form a favorable background. By analyzing a set of large-ensemble simulations using a global atmospheric model, this study demonstrated that two different physical processes in global climate variability control the interannual fluctuations in the 99th- and 90th-percentile values of summertime daily rainfall (i.e., the potential amounts) on Kyushu Island in western Japan. The 90th-percentile values were closely related to large-scale horizontal moisture transport anomalies due to changes in the subtropical high in the northwestern Pacific, which was usually accompanied by basin-scale warming in the Indian Ocean subsequent to the wintertime El Niño events. The contributions of the sea surface temperatures over the northern Indian Ocean and the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean showed low-frequency modulations, mainly due to the influences of the global warming tendency and the interdecadal variability in the climate system, respectively. In contrast, tropical cyclone activity played a major role in changing the 99th-percentile value. The potentials of both the tropical cyclone intensity and the existence density fluctuated, largely owing to the summertime sea surface temperature over the tropical Pacific, which can be modulated by the El Niño diversity on interdecadal timescales. It is important to consider extreme climate events, reduce disaster losses, and formulate effective disaster prevention and mitigation countermeasures. Based on the daily data from 36 meteorological stations of Xinjiang from 1960 to 2020, in order to analyze the temporal–spatial variations and influencing factors of extreme dry and wet events in Xinjiang, a number of methods were used including climate trend, the Mann–Kendall test, the Fourier power spectrum, the contribution rate, partial least squares and cross-wavelet analysis. Results indicate that the annual average frequency of extreme dry/wet events has a decreasing/increasing trend, at the rate of 0.26 times/decade and 0.19 times/decade, respectively; the variation trend in extreme dry and wet events of four seasons are consistent with the annual counterpart, at the rate of −0.04 times/decade and 0.02 times/decade (spring), −0.08 times/decade and 0.05 times/decade (summer), −0.05 times/decade and 0.06 times/decade (autumn), and −0.1 times/decade and 0.08 times/decade (winter). Fe fluctuation is greatest in winter and the smallest in spring, so the transition to warm and wet is obvious in winter and spring drought is easy to occur; the variation extent of extreme dry and wet events in northern Xinjiang exceeds the counterpart in southern Xinjiang; 1986 and 1987 witnessed abrupt variation in extreme dry and wet events in Xinjiang, with indication of distinct periodic oscillations of 2.44, 2.94, and 5.69 years and 2.94 and 5.69 years, respectively; the extreme dry (wet) events are determined by meteorological factors, comprising precipitation, relative humidity and temperature, and the circulation factors constituted by Western Pacific Subtropical High-Intensity Area (East Asian Trough Intensity, Westerly Circulation and Western Pacific Subtropical High Area) and El Niño events. Once an El Niño event has been forecast, government warnings and news headlines highlight the need for society to get ready for the potential impacts of the event, whether drought, flood, heatwave, disease outbreak, or water shortage. The notion of readiness for a climate-, water- or weather-related hazard or disaster is a fuzzy term, subject to a wide range of conflicting perceptions. Not every government sees El Niño as a direct threat to the wellbeing of its citizens. In this paper, we conceptualize readiness and identify reasons that some governments do not as well as cannot prepare for El Niño's foreseeable consequences. Central among those reasons are its characteristics: quasi-periodicity, event variability, difficulties with onset forecasting, and the fact that El Niño and its "teleconnections" are influenced by numerous other oceanic and atmospheric oscillations. As a result, there is no universally accepted approach to or reliable measure of readiness. The concept is often discussed qualitatively in terms of "shades of readiness", such as hardly ready, somewhat ready, almost ready, and absolutely ready. Although El Niño is still difficult to forecast, the existing knowledge about it can provide usable information for decision makers to choose whether to pursue strategic or tactical disaster risk reduction policies. The results of a piControl experiment investigating general circulation models participating in the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) were examined. The global interannual variability in the monthly surface temperature (ST) and sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies was considered. The amplitudes of the fluctuations in the anomalies of these meteorological fields between opposite phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) were calculated. It was shown that most CMIP6 models reproduced fluctuations in the ST and SLP anomalies between El Niño and La Niña not only in the equatorial Pacific, but also throughout the tropics, as well as in the middle and high latitudes. Some of the CMIP6 models reproduced the global structures of the ST and SLP anomaly oscillations quite accurately between opposite phases of ENSO, as previously determined from observational data and reanalyses. It was found that the models AS-RCEC TaiESM1, CAMS CAMS-CSM1-0, CAS FGOALS-f3-L, CMCC CMCC-ESM2, KIOST KIOST-ESM, NASA GISS-E2-1-G, NCAR CESM2-WACCM-FV2, and NCC NorCPM1 reproduced strong ENSO teleconnections in regions beyond the tropical Pacific. Information about wind variations and future wind conditions is essential for a monsoon domain such as the Northwest Pacific (NWP) region. This study utilizes 10 Generalized Circulation Models (GCM) from CMIP6 to evaluate near-future wind changes in the NWP under various climate warming scenarios. Evaluation against the ERA5 reanalysis dataset for the historical period 1985–2014 reveals a relatively small error with an average of no more than 1 m/s, particularly in the East Asian Marginal Seas (EAMS). Future projections (2026–2050) indicate intensified winds, with a 5–8% increase in the summer season in the EAMS, such as the Yellow Sea, East Sea, and East China Sea, while slight decreases are observed in the winter period. Climate mode influences show that winter El Niño tends to decrease wind speeds in the southern study domain, while intensifying winds are observed in the northern part, particularly under SSP5-8.5. Conversely, summer El Niño induces higher positive anomalous wind speeds in the EAMS, observed in SSP2-4.5. These conditions are likely linked to El Niño-induced SST anomalies. For the application of CMIP6 surface winds, the findings are essential for further investigations focusing on the oceanic consequences of anticipated wind changes such as the ocean wave climate, which can be studied through model simulations. The westerly circulation and the monsoon circulation are the two major atmospheric circulation systems affecting the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH), which have significant impacts on climate and environmental changes in the middle latitudes. However, until now, people's understanding of the long-term paleoenvironmental changes in the westerly- and monsoon-controlled areas in China's middle latitudes is not uniform, and the phase relationship between the two at different time scales is also controversial, especially the exception to the "dry gets drier, wet gets wetter" paradigm in global warming between the two. Based on the existing literature data published, integrated paleoenvironmental records, and comprehensive simulation results in recent years, this study systematically reviews the climate and environmental changes in the two major circulation regions in the mid-latitudes of China since the Middle Pleistocene, with a focus on exploring the phase relationship between the two systems at different time scales and its influencing mechanism. Through the reanalysis and comparative analysis of the existing data, we conclude that the interaction and relationship between the two circulation systems are relatively strong and close during the warm periods, but relatively weak during the cold periods. From the perspective of orbital, suborbital, and millennium time scales, the phase relationship between the westerly and Asian summer monsoon (ASM) circulations shows roughly in-phase, out-of-phase, and anti-phase transitions, respectively. There are significant differences between the impacts of the westerly and ASM circulations on the middle-latitude regions of northwest China, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, and eastern China. However, under the combined influence of varied environmental factors such as BHLSR (boreal high-latitude solar radiation), SST (sea surface temperature), AMOC (north Atlantic meridional overturning circulation), NHI (Northern Hemisphere ice volume), NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation), ITCZ (intertropical convergence zone), WPSH (western Pacific subtropical high), TIOA (tropical Indian Ocean anomaly), ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation), CGT/SRP (global teleconnection/Silk Road pattern), etc., there is a complex and close coupling relationship between the two, and it is necessary to comprehensively consider their "multi-factor's joint-action" mechanism and impact, while, in general, the dynamic mechanisms driving the changes of the westerly and ASM circulations are not the same at different time scales, such as orbital, suborbital, centennial to millennium, and decadal to interannual, which also leads to the formation of different types of phase relationships between the two at different time scales. Future studies need to focus on the impact of this "multi-factor linkage mechanism" and "multi-phase relationship" in distinguishing the interaction between the westerly and ASM circulation systems in terms of orbital, suborbital, millennium, and sub-millennium time scales. Featured Application: Various studies have reported a teleconnection between the El Niño phenomenon in the southern Pacific Ocean and the North-Atlantic Oscillation, which governs the weather in the eastern side of the American continent and most parts of Europe, including the Mediterranean. Though such a relationship has been established to a large degree, it is still unknown whether the El Niño phenomenon can affect atmospheric processes in the mentioned regions. Therefore, the present study investigates the existence of any effect of El Niño on atmospheric radiation and atmospheric aerosols over the Mediterranean region. The Mediterranean area is considered a hot spot on our planet because it represents the crossroads of various aerosols. Several studies have shown that the weather in the region is affected by the North-Atlantic Oscillation, which, in turn, is well connected with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Nevertheless, no study has investigated the ENSO effect on the solar radiation and atmospheric aerosols in this region. The present study considers a greater area around the Mediterranean Sea over the period 1980–2022. The results show that there exists a loose but significant dependence, in some cases, of the optical properties of aerosols (aerosol optical depth, Ångström exponent, cloud optical depth) and solar radiation (net short-wave and net long-wave radiation, direct aerosol radiative forcing) on ENSO events. The results of this study provide motivation for further investigations, since such results can increase the accuracy of general circulation models that deal with climate change. Besides the ENSO effect, the enrichment of the Mediterranean atmosphere in suspended particles from great volcanic eruptions is shown. Based on observation data from 1958 to 2020, the current study explores the interdecadal modulation effects on moderate El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) episodes and East Asian (EA) winter surface air temperature (SAT) through the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Strong and moderate ENSO episodes are classified by their amplitudes. The current work investigates the influence of moderate ENSO episodes on the EA winter SAT, especially moderate La Niña episodes, which show a close relationship with the EA winter SAT. To explore the PDO modulation effect on the influence of ENSO episodes, these ENSO episodes are further divided into two categories in terms of warm or cold PDO phases. The composite results show that in the warm phase of the PDO, the moderate La Niña signal is relatively strong and stable, with a profound impact on the EA winter SAT variability, whereas in the cold PDO phase, the relationship between the EA winter SAT and moderate La Niña episodes becomes ambiguous. Further studies show that the PDO modulates the moderate La Niña impacts on EA winter SAT primarily through varying the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). While moderate La Niña episodes take place in a warm PDO phase, positive and negative anomalies of sea level pressure (SLP) are observed in the Eurasian continent and mid–high-latitude North Pacific, respectively, favoring anomalous northerlies along the eastern coast of East Asia and therefore a colder-than-normal EA winter. In contrast, in a moderate La Niña winter during the cold PDO phase, the mid–high-latitude North Pacific is controlled by an anomalous high-pressure system with southerly anomalies along its western flank, and therefore, a weak warm pattern is observed for the EA winter SAT. Fire danger poses a pressing threat to ecosystems and societies worldwide. Adequate preparation and forewarning can help reduce these threats, but these rely on accurate prediction of extreme fire danger. With the knowledge that climatic conditions contribute heavily to overall fire danger, this study evaluates the skill with which episodes of extreme fire danger in Australia can be predicted from the activity of large-scale climate driver patterns. An extremal dependence index for extreme events is used to depict the historical predictive skill of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's subseasonal climate prediction system in replicating known relationships between the probability of top-decile fire danger and climate driver states at a lead time of 2–3 weeks. Results demonstrate that the El Niño Southern Oscillation, Southern Annular Mode, persistent modes of atmospheric blocking, Indian Ocean Dipole and Madden-Julian Oscillation are all key for contributing to predictability of fire danger forecasts in different regions during critical fire danger periods. Northwest Australia is found to be particularly predictable, with the highest mean index differences (>0.50) when certain climate drivers are active, compared with the climatological index mean. This integrated approach offers a valuable resource for decision-making in fire-prone regions, providing greater confidence to users relying on fire danger outlooks for key management decisions, such as those involved in the sectors of national park and forest estate management, agriculture, emergency services, health and energy. Furthermore, the results highlight strengths and weaknesses in both the Australian Fire Danger Rating System and the operational climate model, contributing additional information for improving and refining future iterations of these systems. Atmosphere clearness is the single most essential parameter determining surface solar radiation. However, few studies have investigated the interannual variations in China's atmosphere clearness and the impacts of El Niño–Southern Oscillation on it. This study aims to fill the knowledge gap by calculating the clearness index using the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset version 1.7 and then analyzing the correlations between the interannual anomaly and the Niño-3.4 index. The results show that there is a significantly negative correlation in the southeastern coastal regions, northern Xinjiang, northeastern Xizang, and areas from northern Hebei to middle Inner Mongolia. In these areas, the higher the ENSO index, the lower the clearness index, and, coincidingly, positive precipitation anomalies are reported in previous studies. The impacts of El Niño and La Niña vary with seasons. The ENSO events have generally opposite impacts in the seasons other than summer. El Niño tends to decrease the clearness index, while La Niña tends to decrease the atmosphere clearness in most territories of China. The impacts are different in the places of statistical significance. The negative impacts of El Niño are significant in the southeastern coastal regions of China in winter and in northeast China in autumn. The positive impacts of La Niña are significant in the southwestern and northeastern China in the autumn. In these seasons, ENSO's impacts scale with the strength of the event. Stronger events amplify the magnitude of the anomalies, while the spatial patterns of the anomalies are kept almost invariant. In summer, ENSO's impacts exhibit different characteristics than in the other seasons and between the El Niño and La Niña events. For the El Niño events, the impacts are insignificant in most territories of China, even for the strong ones. La Niña has a larger influence on the summertime clearness than El Niña, and the spatial pattern of the La Niña's impacts varies with the event strength. The anomalies during strong La Niña events have a tripolar pattern with a positive anomaly in south and north China and a negative anomaly in between. The pattern suggests that the relationship between the clearness index and precipitation is different during strong La Niña events. These findings would provide valuable insights into the interannual variations of atmosphere clearness in China and could be clues to further investigation. The heat budget of the equatorial Pacific mixed layer during El Niño formation was studied based on reanalysis (GLORYS2V4) and model data for the modern climate. The focus of the study is on the so-called El Niño diversity, i.e., the existence of different types of events that are characterized by different locations and intensities, as well as significantly different teleconnection all around the world. The analysis of the processes that participate in the formation of different El Niño types may serve for a better understanding of the El Niño dynamic and contribute to improving its forecast. Two classifications, based on the location and intensity of the events, were considered: strong/moderate and Eastern Pacific (EP)/Central Pacific (CP). The analysis did not reveal a significant difference in the heat budget of the mixed layer between strong and EP El Niño events, as well as between moderate and CP events. The major difference in the generation mechanism of strong (EP) and moderate (CP) El Niño events consists of the magnitude of heating produced by ocean heat budget components with higher heating rates for strong (EP) events. The evolution of sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) is governed primarily by oceanic advection. The vertical advection (due to the thermocline feedback) is the main contributor to SSTA growth in the eastern Pacific regardless of El Niño's type. In the Central Pacific, horizontal advection is more important than vertical one, with a stronger impact of meridional processes for both strong and moderate regimes. Furthermore, the evaluation of the CMIP5 model's skill in the simulation of the processes responsible for the formation of different El Niño types was carried out. The analysis of the heat budget of the mixed layer in the CMIP5 ensemble demonstrated that the most successful models are CCSM4, CESM1-BGC, CMCC-CMS, CNRM-CM5, GFDL-ESM2M, and IPSL-CM5B-LR. They are capable of reproducing the most important contribution of the advection terms in the SSTA tendency, keeping the major role of the thermocline feedback (and vertical advection) in the eastern Pacific, and do not overestimate the contribution of zonal advective feedback. Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of extreme rainfall and meteorological drought on a watershed scale could be beneficial for local management of any water resources system that supports dam operation and river conservation. This study considered the watershed of Angat as a case, given its economic importance in the Philippines. A series of homogeneity tests were initially conducted on each rainfall dataset from monitoring stations in and near the watershed, followed by trend analysis to determine the rate and direction of change in the annual and seasonal rainfall extreme indices in terms of intensity, duration, and frequency. Three indices, using the rainfall deviation method (%DEV), percent of normal rainfall index (PNRI), and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), were also used to identify meteorological drought events. Generally, rainfall in the watershed has an increasing annual PCPTOT (4–32 mm/year), with increasing frequency and intensity in heavy rainfall and wet days. A significant increasing trend (α = 5%) in the seasonal PCPTOT (7–65 mm/year) and R10mm (1.7–10.0 days/decade) was particularly observed in all stations during the Amihan Monsoon Season (Dec–Feb). The observed increasing rainfall intensity and frequency, if it continues in the future, could have an implication both for the water resources operation to satisfy the multiple objectives of Angat Reservoir and for the flood operation that prevents damage in the downstream areas. The effect of each ENSO (El Niño- Southern Oscillation) phase on the rainfall is unique in magnitude, intensity, and duration. The seasonal reversal of the ENSO in the extreme rainfall and meteorological drought signals in Angat Watershed was also evident. The identified meteorological drought events in the watershed based on SPI-12 persisted up to 12–33 months, could reduce more than 60% (PNRI < 40%) of the normal rainfall. Based on the 30-year global hourly sea surface temperature (SST) dataset (MLSST) produced by the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center, Ministry of Natural Resources of China, we analyzed the variability of diurnal sea surface temperature amplitude (DSST) of the tropical Indian Ocean at multiple time scales, as well as its influencing factors. The results show that the DSST in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and equatorial Indian Ocean exhibits a bimodal seasonal variation with a semi-annual cycle, while the DSST in the southern Indian Ocean shows an annual cycle. The seasonal variation of DSST is mainly influenced by factors such as sea surface wind speed, shortwave solar radiation, and precipitation. The DSST in the equatorial Indian Ocean is generally higher during El Niño years compared to La Niña years. At the intraseasonal scale, the large standard deviation of DSST in boreal winter is mainly distributed in the southern hemisphere, while the large standard deviation of DSST in boreal summer shifts northward. The intraseasonal variation amplitude of DSST in boreal winter of the tropical Indian Ocean is greater than that in boreal summer. The DSST in the tropical Indian Ocean exhibits significant variation characteristics at multi-time scales. Global climatic circulation indices play a major role in determining regional and global climate conditions. These atmospheric circulation patterns exhibit substantial variability, covering a wide geographical area and affecting weather-related events. The primary goal of this study was to examine and characterize various global climatic variability indices during the 1950 to 2020 period (El Niño Southern Oscillation, ENSO; Southern Oscillation Index, SOI; North Atlantic Oscillation, NAO; Atlantic Meridional Mode, AMM; and Indian Ocean Dipole, IOD). Also, this article try to investigating the link between these global climatic indices. Trend analysis showed that the ENSO index exhibits the highest recurrence frequency of correlation relationships with the other yearly global indices with significance at the 95% and 99% levels, while the NAO index exhibits the lowest recurrence frequency. On a seasonal basis, most indices demonstrate more abrupt changes during the winter season than during the summer. An increase occurred in events of abrupt changes in these indices over the last two decades (2000 to 2020), especially annually and in summer. The SOI exhibits the largest number of abrupt changes throughout the entire study period, spanning from positive to negative significant trends, whereas the IOD did not exhibit abrupt changes annually. Increasing and decreasing trends in the global climatic circulation indices may be related to natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change. Regarding both the correlation coefficient (CC) and partial correlation results, there existed a highly negative association between the ENSO and SOI in the annual, winter and summer time series. On the other hand, there is no relationship between ENSO and NAO. Furthermore, on an annual basis, there existed a highly negative association between the NAO and AMM and a less negative but still statistically significant association between these indices during the winter and summer seasons, respectively. Therefore, through the Azore high, the NAO could promote AMM. Moreover, when the NAO, AMM, and SOI are held constant, a positive and robust correlation is reached between the ENSO and IOD in winter season. A long-term vertical ozone observational dataset has been provided during 2001–2019 by ozonesonde measurements in Beijing on the North China Plain. Previous studies using this dataset primarily focused on the vertical characteristics of climatological ozone and its variation; however, the driving factors of ozone variation have not been well discussed. In this study, by applying the wavelet analysis method (including continuous wavelet transform and cross wavelet) and sliding correlation coefficients to ~20 years of ozonesonde measurements collected in Beijing, we analyzed the dominant modes of ozone column variability within three height ranges over Beijing (total column ozone: TOT; stratospheric column ozone: SCO; and tropospheric column ozone: TCO). Moreover, we also preliminarily discussed the relationship between these three ozone columns and the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO), and 11-year solar activity cycle. The results revealed that the ozone columns within the three height ranges predominantly adhered to interannual variability patterns, and the short-term variabilities in TOT and SCO may have been related to eruptive volcanic activity. In comparison to the TOT and SCO, the TCO was more susceptible to the forcing influences of high-frequency factors such as pollutant transport. Similar to the results in other mid-latitude regions, strong ENSO and QBO signals were revealed in the interannual ozone column variability over Beijing. The TOT and SCO showed positive anomalous responses to ENSO warm-phase events, and the peak of the ENSO warm phase led the winter peaks of the TOT and SCO by approximately 3–6 months. During the strong cold–warm transition phase in 2009–2012, the TOT and SCO showed a significant positive correlation with the ENSO index. The strong seasonality of the meridional circulation process driven by the QBO led to a significant positive correlation between the QBO index and the TOT and SCO in the interannual cycle, except for two periods of abnormal QBO fluctuations in 2010–2012 and 2015–2017, whereas the TCO showed a time-lagged correlation of approximately 3 months in the annual cycle relative to the QBO due to the influence of the thermodynamic tropopause. In addition, analysis of the F10.7 index and the ozone columns revealed that the ozone columns over Beijing exhibited lagged responses to the peaks of sunspot activity, and there was no obvious correlation between ozone columns and 11-year solar activity cycle. Given the complex driving mechanism of the climatic factors on local ozone variability, the preliminary results obtained in this study still require further validation using longer time series of observational data and the combination of chemical models and more auxiliary data. In this paper, the teleconnections from the tropical Atlantic to the Indo-Pacific region from inter-annual to centennial time scales will be reviewed. Identified teleconnections and hypotheses on mechanisms at work are reviewed and further explored in a century-long pacemaker coupled ocean-atmosphere simulation ensemble. There is a substantial impact of the tropical Atlantic on the Pacific region at inter-annual time scales. An Atlantic Niño (Niña) event leads to rising (sinking) motion in the Atlantic region, which is compensated by sinking (rising) motion in the central-western Pacific. The sinking (rising) motion in the central-western Pacific induces easterly (westerly) surface wind anomalies just to the west, which alter the thermocline. These perturbations propagate eastward as upwelling (downwelling) Kelvin-waves, where they increase the probability for a La Niña (El Niño) event. Moreover, tropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies are also able to lead La Niña/El Niño development. At multidecadal time scales, a positive (negative) Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation leads to a cooling (warming) of the eastern Pacific and a warming (cooling) of the western Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. The physical mechanism for this impact is similar to that at inter-annual time scales. In this paper, the sea surface temperature (SST) based statistical seasonal forecast model (S4CAST) is utilized to examine the spatial and temporal prediction skill of Sahel heavy and extreme daily precipitation events. As in previous studies, S4CAST points out the Mediterranean Sea and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as the main drivers of Sahel heavy/extreme daily rainfall variability at interannual timescales (period 1982–2015). Overall, the Mediterranean Sea emerges as a seasonal short-term predictor of heavy daily rainfall (1 month in advance), while ENSO returns a longer forecast window (up to 3 months in advance). Regarding the spatial skill, the response of heavy daily rainfall to the Mediterranean SST forcing is significant over a widespread area of the Sahel. Contrastingly, with the ENSO forcing, the response is only significant over the southernmost Sahel area. These differences can be attributed to the distinct physical mechanisms mediating the analyzed SST-rainfall teleconnections. Sea ice fraction (SIF) over the Ross/Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea (RAB) are investigated using the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Application, Version 2 (MERRA-2), focusing on the differences in time-lagged response to ENSO between the late 20th (1980–2000, L20) and the early 21st century (2001–2021, E21). The findings suggest that the typical Antarctic response to ENSO is influenced by changes in ENSO type/intensity, highlighting the need for caution when investigating the Antarctic teleconnection. Time-lagged regressions onto the mature phase of El Niño reveal that the SIF decrease and SST increase over the RAB is relatively weaker in E21 and most pronounced at 0–4 months lag. Conversely, the SIF in L20 continues to decline and reaches its peak at two-season lag (5–7 months). Tropospheric wind, pressure, and wave activity in response to El Niño in L20 show a zonally oriented high/low-pressure areas with two-season lag, enhancing the poleward flow that plays a key role in sea ice melt in the RAB, while this pattern in E21 is insignificant at the same lag. This study suggests that stronger (weaker) and more eastern (central) Pacific ENSOs on average in L20 (E21) are associated with this decadal change in the SIF response to ENSO. The Silk Road pattern (SRP) and circumglobal teleconnection pattern (CGT) are two well-known teleconnection patterns, representing the summer circulation variations of the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes, which have different definitions but are often regarded as one teleconnection pattern. In view of the distinct features of the SRP/CGT on the interannual (IA) and interdecadal (ID) timescales, the present study investigates the linkages and differences between the SRP and CGT on the two timescales, respectively. On the IA timescale, both the SRP and CGT feature a similar circumglobal wave train structure with strong and significant centers over Eurasia but show clear independence. Specifically, the SRP and CGT illustrate largely the mid-/high-latitude-related and tropics-related parts of the Northern Hemisphere upper tropospheric circulation variations, respectively. Also, the CGT shows a stronger connection to the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) heating and El Niño–Southern Oscillation than the SRP, which makes the CGT more like a tropical forcing-driven atmospheric mode and the SRP more like an internal atmospheric mode. The linkages and differences between them are associated with their asymmetrical relationship during their positive and negative phases, which are attributed mainly to the asymmetrical impact of the ISM heating/cooling on the Eurasian circulations. On the ID timescale, the SRP and CGT are characterized by a coherent two-wave train structure over Eurasia and feature a similar teleconnection pattern over Eurasia, which is associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. The typical diurnal variability of tropospheric winds over West Sumatra and their changes associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation, Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Madden–Julian Oscillations and convectively coupled Kelvin waves during the extended boreal winter season are investigated based on nineteen years of observations from Equatorial Atmosphere Radar in Kototabang, Indonesia. Sub-diurnal wind variability is assessed based on the amplitude and phase of the diurnal (24 h) and semidiurnal (12 h) modes.The results show that composite diurnal variability is dominated by cloud-induced circulation and thermal tides. Although these sub-diurnal modes do not change the daily mean wind direction, they modulate velocities throughout the day. Typical diurnal evolution of the vertical wind component is consistent with changes in the latent heating profiles associated with the evolution of a cloud field from cumulus before noon to deep convection in the afternoon and stratiform clouds in the evening. El Niño Southern Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation affect the mean tropospheric winds, throughout the troposphere and above 250 hPa, respectively, but do not affect sub-diurnal amplitudes. Eastward propagating Madden–Julian Oscillations and convectively coupled Kelvin waves impact both the mean and sub-diurnal tropospheric wind variability. Both horizontal and vertical winds show the largest variability in the lower and mid troposphere (below 400 hPa). The observed variability in the vertical wind component highlights that large-scale phenomena interact with both the local evolution and progression of a cloud field through dynamical feedback. The Atacama desert stands as the most arid, non-polar, region on Earth and has accommodated a considerable portion of the world's ground-based astronomical observatories for an extended period. The comprehension of factors important for observational conditions in this region, and the potential alterations induced by the escalating impact of climate change, are, therefore, of the utmost significance. In this study, we conduct an analysis of the surface-level air temperature, water vapour density, and astronomical seeing at the European Southern Observatory (commonly known by its acronym, ESO) telescope sites in northern Chile. Our findings reveal a discernible rise in temperature across all sites during the last decade. Moreover, we establish a correlation between the air temperature and water vapour density with the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases, wherein, the warm anomaly known as El Niño (EN) corresponds to drier observing conditions, coupled with higher maximum daily temperatures favouring more challenging near-infrared observations. The outcomes of this investigation have potential implications for the enhancement of the long-term scheduling of observations at telescope sites in northern Chile, thereby aiding in better planning and allocation of resources for the astronomy community. This article explores the dendrochronological potential of Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart) Barroso (Imbuia) for reconstructing past climate conditions in the General Carneiro region, Southern Brazil, utilizing well-established dendroclimatic techniques. A total of 41 samples of Imbuia were subjected to dendroclimatic analysis to reconstruct precipitation and temperature patterns over the period from 1446 to 2011. Notably, we achieved the longest reconstructions of spring precipitation and temperature for the Brazilian southern region, spanning an impressive 566-year timeframe, by employing a mean chronology approach. To achieve our objectives, we conducted a Pearson's correlation analysis between the mean chronology and the climatic time series, with a monthly temporal resolution employed for model calibration. Impressively, our findings reveal significant correlations with coefficients as high as |rx,P| = 0.32 for precipitation and |rx,T| = 0.45 for temperature during the spring season. Importantly, our climate reconstructions may elucidate a direct influence of the El Niño—South Oscillation phenomenon on precipitation and temperature patterns, which, in turn, are intricately linked to the natural growth patterns of the Imbuia trees. These results shed valuable light on the historical climate variability in the Southern Brazil region and provide insights into the climatic drivers affecting the growth dynamics of Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart) Barroso. In this study, the properties and related anomalies in sea surface wind and rainfall associated with marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the northern South China Sea (SCS) were investigated. The intensity and frequency (duration) of MHWs are high (short) along the coast and decrease (increase) when moving toward the open sea. On the continental shelf of the northern SCS, the wind anomalies associated with MHWs move in a northeastward direction in seasons other than summer. In the summer, MHW-induced wind anomalies were found to be statistically insignificant. In response to MHWs, there is a notable negative rainfall anomaly observed during the spring and summer, whereas a positive anomaly is observed in the fall. In the winter, the MHW-induced rainfall anomalies were deemed insignificant. The presence of an El Niño event can delay the influence of MHWs on rainfall anomalies and attenuate the amplitude of MHW-induced sea surface wind anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights from the article: The atmospheric and climate research communities have made significant advances in recent decades in gathering and understanding the scientific evidence supporting the concept of anthropogenic climate change. It is therefore important that there is continued effort to characterize and quantify the impacts of climate change, particularly at local and regional levels, since this is what will drive improvements in climate change mitigation and adaptation policy [[9]]. Two papers in this special issue address the links between large scale climate dynamics and health: specifically the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) which are both important modes of global climate variability [[14]].

This paper examines the effects of the tropical Pacific Ocean (TPO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) modes in the interannual variations of austral spring rainfall over South America (SA). The TPO mode refers to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The isolated effects between IOD and TPO were estimated, events were chosen from the residual TPO (R-TPO) or residual IOD (R-IOD), and the IOD (TPO) effects for the R-TPO (R-IOD) composites were removed from the variables. One relevant result was the nonlinear precipitation response to R-TPO and R-IOD. This feature was accentuated for the R-IOD composites. The positive R-IOD composite showed significant negative precipitation anomalies along equatorial SA east of 55° W and in subtropical western SA, and showed positive anomalies in northwestern SA and central Brazil. The negative R-IOD composite indicated significant positive precipitation anomalies in northwestern Amazon, central–eastern Brazil north of 20° S, and western subtropical SA, and negative anomalies were found in western SA south of 30° S. This nonlinearity was likely due to the distinct atmospheric circulation responses to the anomalous heating sources located in longitudinally distinct regions: the western tropical Indian Ocean and areas neighboring Indonesia. In recent years, more and more record-breaking extreme weather/climate events have been reported from the Asian monsoon region, which have caused tremendous loss of property and lives. In this paper, we analyzed the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability during the Holocene and evaluated future climate extremes in monsoonal China from a paleoclimatic view. We found a significant regime transition to more chaotic fluctuations, with enhanced decadal variability of the ASM since 6.6 ka BP. We suggested the gradual intensification of ENSO was responsible for enhancing the ASM variability since the late mid-Holocene. If the observed relationship of monsoon mean intensity, ENSO and decadal variability of the ASM in the past 11.2 ka continue to exist, enhanced decadal variability of ASM in the future warming world will be expected. As a result, the intensification of daily precipitation extremes, superimposed on enhanced decadal variability of ASM, might make the record-breaking extremes more frequent in the future, increasing the risk of climate-related disasters in China. This paper examines the relative role of the Indian Ocean basin-wide (IOBW) mode and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the atmospheric circulation and rainfall interannual variations over South America (SA) during southern summer of the 1951‒2016 period. The effects of the warm IOBW and El Niño (EN) events, and of the cold IOBW and La Niña (LN) events are examined using partial correlations. The ENSO and IOBW modes, through the associated large-scale and regional anomalous circulation patterns, induce contrasting effects on the rainfall in northeastern SA. The EN without the warm IOBW effect induces anomalously dry conditions over eastern Amazon and part of northeastern Brazil (NEB) through anomalous sinking motions of the EN-related anomalous Walker and Hadley cells and strong moisture divergence associated with a vigorous anticyclone over tropical South Atlantic (TSA) and SA. The warm IOBW without the EN effect induces anomalously wet conditions in NEB, which is marginally related to the anomalous Walker and Hadley cells but is modulated by an anticyclone over SA between the equator and 20° S, and a cyclone in the southwestern Atlantic between 20° S and 40° S. Clouds play an important role in the climate system; nonetheless, the relationship between climate change in general and regional cloud occurrence is not yet well understood. This particularly holds for remote areas such as the iconic Galapagos archipelago in Ecuador. As a first step towards a better understanding, we analyzed the spatio-temporal patterns of cloud cover over Galapagos. We found that cloud frequency and distribution exhibit large inter- and intra-annual variability due to the changing influence of climatic drivers (trade winds, sea surface temperature, El Niño/La Niña events) and spatial variations due to terrain characteristics and location within the archipelago. The highest cloud frequencies occur in mid-elevations on the slopes exposed to the southerly trade winds (south-east slopes). Towards the highlands (>900 m a.s.l), cloud frequency decreases, with a sharp leap towards high-level crater areas mainly on Isabela Island that frequently immerse into the trade inversion layer. With respect to the diurnal cycle, we found a lower cloud frequency over the islands in the evening than in the morning. Seasonally, cloud frequency is higher during the hot season (January–May) than in the cool season (June–December). However, spatial differences in cloudiness were more pronounced during the cool season months. We further analyzed two periods beyond average atmospheric forcing. During El Niño 2015, the cloud frequency was higher than usual, and differences between altitudes and aspects were less pronounced. By decomposing observed El Niño and La Niña events into a strong group and a weak group, respectively, we discovered that the strong La Niña group has its peak center more towards the west compared to the weak La Niña group, whereas the strong El Niño group has its peak center more towards the east compared to the weak El Niño group. The cause of this structure asymmetry is investigated through an ocean mixed-layer heat budget analysis. It was found that the asymmetry is closely linked to the longitudinal distribution of SST anomaly (SSTA) skewness along the equator, and is fundamentally caused by nonlinear dynamic heating, especially nonlinear horizontal temperature advection. It was demonstrated that near the equatorial central Pacific, the anomalous zonal and meridional currents generate negative nonlinear zonal and meridional temperature advection anomalies for both the El Niño and La Niña events, thus favoring a stronger La Niña and a weaker El Niño. Over the eastern Pacific, due to the dominant geostrophic zonal current anomalies and the southward shift of SSTA centers, nonlinear horizontal temperature advection anomalies tend to be positive for both the El Niño and La Niña, thus favoring a stronger growth of El Niño than La Niña. Nonlinear vertical temperature advection anomalies play minor roles in the central Pacific and tend to partially offset the nonlinear horizontal advection effect in the equatorial eastern Pacific. We conducted an investigation into the characteristics of marine heatwaves (MHWs) in Indonesian waters, aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for their formation, particularly the ones generated by net surface heat flux. To accomplish this, we utilized remote sensing data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The dataset covered a 40-year period (1982–2021) encompassing both warm (1982–2007) and cold (2008–2021) phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Statistical analysis methods were employed to process the data. Our study reveals significant findings regarding MHWs in Indonesian waters. We observed the highest average frequency and maximum intensity of MHWs, occurring approximately 2–3 times a year and exceeding 1.5 °C, respectively, during the warm phase of PDO (with El Niño events occurring more frequently than La Niña). Conversely, the longest durations of MHWs in Indonesian waters were recorded during the cold phase of PDO (with La Niña events occurring more frequently than El Niño), spanning approximately 7–15 days. We identified local forcing in the form of net surface heat flux as the primary driver of MHW frequency and maximum intensity. During the warm phase of PDO, the net surface heat flux was notably higher, primarily due to increased shortwave radiation (heat gain) and reduced latent heat flux (heat loss) through the evaporation process. These factors collectively contributed to maintaining warmer ocean temperatures. Moreover, our study provides valuable insights into the interannual variability of MHWs through the application of composite calculations. We discovered a strong correlation between the occurrence of El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events during the warm PDO phase and the highest frequency and maximum intensity of MHWs, with approximately 2.52 events and 1.54 °C, respectively. In contrast, we found that MHWs with the longest durations were closely linked to La Niña and negative IOD events during the cold PDO phase, lasting approximately 10.90 days. Rainfall erosivity (RE) is an important indicator of the ability of rainfall to cause soil erosion and is linked to ENSO through the transport of rainfall. Accurate assessment of RE and improved understanding of RE are essential for soil erosion prediction, optimization of soil and water conservation measures, and ecological management and restoration. Therefore, the Wuding River Basin, a typical ecologically fragile area, is selected as the research area. The erosivity model based on daily rainfall was first used to calculate RE, and the temporal and periodic characteristics of RE are studied. Then the effects of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), the Surface Temperature of the Central East Equatorial Pacific Ocean (SST), and the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) on RE are explored by using cross wavelet technique. Results indicated that: (1) the concentration of rainfall leads to the largest RE values in summer compared with other seasons, accumulating about 69% of the annual RE; (2) The overall trend of increasing RE in the Wuding River basin is not significant, but shows an abrupt change in 2015; (3) the influence of the SOI and SST indices of ENSO events on RE is significant, which is shown to be a statistically significant correlation (95% confidence level), indicating that ENSO has a strong influence on the changing pattern of RE. Exploring the relationship between climate phenomena and anomalies in Earth's rotation during a corresponding period is helpful for constraining the assessment of global change, even for the early warning of climate events. This study selected the latest length of day changes (ΔLOD) observations, and extracted the interannual terms solely related to climatic variations, employing a difference plus frequency domain stepwise regression (Difference+FDSR) method. Afterward, we calculated the correlations of different data compositions between surface fluid contributions (AAM, OAM and HAM) and the climate-related ΔLOD. Finally, the anomalies during the period of 1993–2023 were focused on, by comparing the high-precision fluid forcing and the climate-related ΔLOD with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indices. Our results show that superimposing the HAM can improve fluid correlations ~5% with climate-related ΔLOD, but the OAM contribution is not obvious. Additionally, we detected a triple-dip La Niña in the last 3 years, and the corresponding minimum values of climate-related ΔLOD were between −0.11 and −0.23 ms. Furthermore, we investigated the short-term forecast of a climate event with ΔLOD predictions based on the climate change information on Earth's rotation rate, wherein a follow-up El Niño is indicated. In order to figure out the associated underlying dynamical processes of the 2014–2015 warming event, we used the ECCO (Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean) reanalysis from 1993 to 2016 and two combined scatterometers, QuikSCAT and ASCAT, to analysis hydrodynamic condition and ocean heat budget balance process in the equatorial tropical pacific. The spatiotemporal characteristics of that warming event were revealed by comparing the results with a composite El Niño. The results showed that the significant differences between the 2014 and 2015 warming periods were the magnitudes and positions of the equatorial easterly wind anomalies during the summer months. The abruptly easterly wind anomalies of 2014 that spread across the entire equatorial Pacific triggered the upwelling of the equatorial Kelvin waves and pushed the eastern edge of the warm pool back westward. These combined effects caused abrupt decreases in the sea surface temperatures (SST) and upper ocean heat content (OHC) and damped the 2014 warming process into an El Niño. In addition, the ocean budget of the upper 300 m of the El Niño 3.4 region showed that different dynamical processes were responsible for different warming phases. For example, at the beginning of 2014 and 2015, the U advection and subsurface processes played dominant roles in the positive ocean heat content tendency. During the easterly wind anomalies period of 2014, the U advection process mainly caused a negative tendency and halted the development of the warming phase. In regard to the easterly wind anomalies of 2015, the U advection and subsurface processes were weaker negatively when compared with that in 2014. El Niño influences the global climate through teleconnections that are not constant in space and time. In order to study and visualize the spatiotemporal patterns of the El Niño teleconnections, a new method inspired by the concept of attribute trajectories is proposed. The coordinates of the trajectories are the normalized anomalies of the relevant meteorological variables in El Niño. The data structures called flocks are extracted from the trajectories to indicate the regions that are subject to the same type of El Niño teleconnection for a certain period. It is then shown how these structures can be used to get a detailed, spatiotemporal picture of the dynamics of the El Niño teleconnections. The comparison between the flocks of the same temporal scale reveals the general dynamics of the teleconnection, while the analysis among the flocks of different temporal scales indicates the relationship between the coverage and their duration. As an illustration of this method, the spatiotemporal patterns of the anomalous temperature increase caused by El Niño are presented and discussed at the monthly and seasonal scales. Future changes are expected in precipitation under climate change, therefore, changes are projected in the oceanic and terrestrial components. However, it remains poorly elucidated how the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can influence these changes. Therefore, we aimed to perform a space-time causality analysis of regional ENSO impacts on terrestrial and oceanic precipitation by using the Granger causality method as a function of eight temporal lags (lags 1–8). The monthly values of total precipitation obtained using the Lagrangian approach and their respective terrestrial (PLT) and oceanic (PLO) components were used. The analysis was performed for the two regions of western North America (WNA) and eastern South America (ESA) with strong ENSO signals. For the WNA region in winter, the maximum Granger causality was observed in the component of oceanic origin for temporal lags 1 and 2 (3 and 6 months), with a predominance of both positive and negative ENSO conditions. For the ESA region, it was verified that the causality of the ENSO index was maximum for PLT. Temporal lags 2–5 (6–15 months) stood out in winter when there was a marked region of the Granger causality over the La Plata Basin. In autumn, for lags 1–4 (3–12 months), the Granger causality values were predominant in the southern and western areas of ESA and showed a tendency to move northward with an increased temporal lag. Finally, it was shown that high correlation values did not imply the causality of the relationship between the ENSO index and precipitation in the two regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Arctic stratospheric response to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is assessed using the historical simulations provided by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phases 5 and 6 (CMIP5 and CMIP6, respectively). CMIP6 models can well reproduce the ENSO signals in the Arctic stratosphere and have an ameliorated performance compared to CMIP5 models. Specifically, El Niño is associated with an intensified Pacific–North American pattern that leads to a considerable enhancement of planetary wavenumber 1 but a small reduction of planetary wavenumber 2, and thus, a warm and weakened stratospheric polar vortex. The case for La Niña is nearly the opposite, with a cool and strengthened stratospheric polar vortex. In CMIP6, the ENSO-related stratospheric signal matures in the February–March–April season and increases with ENSO magnitude, regardless of the ENSO phase. However, the stratospheric response to strong El Niño (La Niña) is weaker (stronger) than that which should be achieved if the response changes linearly with the amplitude of El Niño (La Niña). An asymmetric time evolution of stratospheric signals exists between strong El Niño and La Niña events. The stratospheric response caused by strong El Niño is weaker from late winter to early spring but stronger in middle and late spring compared to that caused by strong La Niña. By contrast, the Arctic stratospheric signal in moderate El Niño events is larger than that in moderate La Niña. A covariance decomposition method is applied to a monthly global precipitation dataset to decompose the interannual variability in the seasonal mean time series into an unpredictable component related to "weather noise" and to a potentially predictable component related to slowly varying boundary forcing and low-frequency internal dynamics. The "potential predictability" is then defined as the fraction of the total interannual variance accounted for by the latter component. In tropical oceans (30° E–0° W, 30° S–30° N), the consensus is that the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO, with 4–8 year cycles) is a dominant driver of the potentially predictable component, while the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO, with 30–90 days cycles) is a dominant driver of the unpredictable component. In this study, the consensus is verified by using the Nino3-4 SST index and a popular MJO index. It is confirmed that Nino3-4 SST does indeed explain a significant part of the potential predictable component, but only limited variability of the unpredictable component is explained by the MJO index. This raises the question of whether the MJO is dominant in the variability of the unpredictable component of the precipitation, or the current MJO indexes do not represent MJO variability well. In this work, we studied the influence of spring (SP) and summer (SU) El Niño events on the landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in China. The results showed that compared to SU El Niño years, the average latitude of the landfalling TCs in SP El Niño years shifted significantly southward and that the average TC intensity was significantly stronger, especially in the post-landfall period. Additionally, more severe tropical storm-level TCs generated over the South China Sea made landfall in China. Meanwhile, in SP El Niño years, landfalling TCs in southern China had a greater landfall intensity, but landfalling TCs in eastern China were the opposite. These changes in TC intensity during the SP El Niño years could be attributed to more favorable dynamical and thermodynamical conditions, which are beneficial for maintaining TC intensity and duration after landfall. Wave-mean flow interaction is usually regarded as accounting for the origin of the Arctic Oscillation/Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (AO/NAM). It is inferred that the combination of the local wave-mean flow interactions at the AO/NAM's three regional centers of action on three important time scales contributes to the main behavior of the AO/NAM index. To discuss the variations of the AO/NAM indices on the three prominent time scales, we take the 2007/08 and 2009/10 winters as two comparative examples to analyze the local wave-mean flow interactions at the AO/NAM's three centers. The following three facets are identified: (1) Synoptic-scale wave breakings in the North Atlantic can explain the variances of the AO/NAM index on a time scale of 10–20 days. In the 2007/08 winter, there were both cyclonic and anticyclonic synoptic wave breakings, while in the 2009/10 winter, cyclonic synoptic wave breaking was dominant, and the flow characteristics were strikingly similar to the blocking. (2) In the 2007/08 and 2009/10 winters, the signals of the AO/NAM indices on the time scale of 30–60 days are mainly from the interactions between the upward propagating quasi-stationary waves and the polar vortex in the stratosphere. (3) This work also demonstrates that the AO/NAM is linked to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) by the Pacific–North American pattern (PNA) on the winter mean time scale. In the 2007/08 (2009/10) winter, La Niña (El Niño) forced the Pacific jet to shift poleward (equatorward), in favor of weakening (enhancing) the polar waveguide; thus, the polar vortex became stronger (weaker), corresponding to the positive (negative) winter mean AO/NAM index. The deterministic forecast of the stratospheric polar vortex intensity (iSPV) is limited by 2 weeks, but it can be probabilistically predicted for a longer period due to low-frequency components of the climate system, such as large-scale sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) (e.g., El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO)). For a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the effect of the large-scale Pacific SSTAs on the iSPV anomalies formation, idealized model experiments were carried out using the Isca platform. There is no statistically significant response of the SPV dynamics to the SSTAs corresponding to PDO phases, but they noticeably correct the effect of ENSO modes when added to it. The effect of the El Niño (EN) and La Niña (LN) events with neutral PDO phases on the iSPV is asymmetric; in the "single" EN experiment the vortex is 40% weaker relative to the control values, and, in the "single" LN, the SPV is weakened by no more than 20%. When EN accompanied with the positive PDO phase, iSPV is reduced by 58%. When the negative PDO phase is added, the EN effect is significantly weakened. Clouds are notoriously difficult to simulate. Here, we separate and quantify the impact of Pacific climate modes on total cloud cover (TCC) variability, using reliable satellite observations together with state-of-the art reanalysis outputs, over the 1979–2020 period. The two most prominent modes of annual TCC variability show intense loadings over the Pacific basin and explain most of the variance in what could be considered the "signal" in satellite TCC data. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) provides coupled TCC—sea surface temperature (SST) patterns that are linked to the Eastern Pacific (EP) ElNiño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Central Pacific (CP) ENSO in a physically consistent manner. The two ENSO modes dominate global coupled SST–TCC variability with the footprint of the CP ENSO explaining roughly half of the variance induced by the EP ENSO among these coupled fields. Both the EP and the CP ENSO exert an influence on Pacific decadal TCC variability. The impact of both ENSO modes on global total cloud cover variability is amplified by two positive feedbacks. The interaction between tropical clouds and radiation is studied in the context of the weak temperature gradient approximation, using very low order systems (e.g., a two-column two-layer model) as a zeroth-order approximation. Its criteria for the instability are derived in the systems. Owing to the connection between the instability (unstable fixed point) and the oscillation (limit cycle) in physics (phase) space, the systems suggest that the instability of tropical clouds and radiation leads to the atmospheric oscillations with distinct timescales observed. That is, the instability of the boundary layer quasi-equilibrium leads to the quasi-two-day oscillation, the instability of the radiative convective equilibrium leads to the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO), and the instability of the radiative convective flux equilibrium leads to the El Niño–southern oscillation. In addition, a linear model as a first-order approximation is introduced to reveal the zonal asymmetry of the atmospheric response to a standing convective/radiative heating oscillation. Its asymmetric resonance conditions explain why a standing ~45-day oscillation in the systems brings about a planetary-scale eastward travelling vertical circulation like the MJO. The systems, despite of their simplicity, replicate the oscillations with the distinct timescales observed, providing a novel cloud parameterization for weather and climate models. Their instability criteria further suggests that the models can successfully predict the oscillations if they properly represent cirrus clouds and convective downdrafts in the tropics. An Infrared (IR)-passive microwave (PMW) blended technique is developed to derive precipitation estimates over the Asia-Pacific domain through calibrating the temperature of brightness blackbody from the Japanese Himawari-8 satellite to precipitation derived from the combined PMW retrievals (currently MWCOMB2x) based on the probability density function (PDF)-matching concept. Called IRQPE, the technique is modified and fine-tuned to better represent the spatially rapidly changing cloud–precipitation relationship over the target region with PDF-matching tables established over a refined spatial resolution of 0.5° lat/lon grid. The evaluation of the IRQPE shows broadly comparable performance to that of the CMORPH2 in detecting rainfall systems of large and medium-scales at a resolution of 1.0° degree. Rainfall variations from the two datasets over El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Madden Julian Oscillation active convective centers show well consistency of each other, suggesting usefulness of the IRQPE in climate applications. Two approaches for regional improvements are explored by establishing the PDF tables for a further refined spatial resolution and by replacing the PMW-based precipitation 'truth' fields with the surface gauge data to overcome the shortcoming of PMW-based retrievals in capturing orographic rainfall over the Taiwan area. The results show significant improvements. The rainfall patterns of revised the IRQPE at a resolution of 0.1° degree on above the 5-day timescale correlate well with the Taiwan official surface ground truth called the QPESUMS, which is a gridded set of gauge-corrected Radar quantitative precipitation estimations. The root mean square error of the revised IRQPE on estimating the Taiwan overall land rainfall is close to Radar-derived rainfall accumulations on a 30-day time-scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on 35-year (1981–2015) ensemble (24 members) hindcasts of the IAP/LASG global seasonal prediction system named FGOALS-f2 V1.0 (FGOALS-f2), the tropical cyclone (TC) seasonal prediction skills over the South China Sea (SCS) during the TC peak season (July–November) are evaluated. Starting the prediction from June 20th, FGOALS-f2 can well capture the seasonal mean characteristics for both the genesis location and track of TCs over the SCS. For seasonal anomalous TC numbers, FGOALS-f2 underestimates the maximum and minimum of the TC number compared to the observation. The temporal correlation coefficients (TCCs) between FGOALS-f2 and the observation are 0.39 for the TC number and 0.51 for accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) over the SCS, respectively, which are both above the 95% significant level. Additionally, FGOALS-f2 has acceptable prediction skill for the seasonal mean number of TCs landing on three areas (coastal southeastern China, Indochina Peninsula, and Philippines) surrounding the SCS. The skillful prediction of SCS TCs could be ascribed to the well-predicted tropical anomaly of sea surface temperature (SSTA), TC and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (TC-ENSO) relations, and Genesis potential index (GPI).
