This paper proposes a ResGA-Net algorithm for cloud top height (CTH) retrieval using FY-4A satellite data. The algorithm utilizes genetic algorithms for data selection and employs a residual module-based neural network for modeling. It takes the spectral channel data from the FY-4A satellite as input features and uses CTH extracted from ground-based millimeter-wave cloud radar reflectivity as the target. By combining the large observation scale of the FY-4A satellite and the high accuracy of ground-based cloud radar observations, the model can generate satellite CTH products with higher precision. To validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, experiments were conducted using data from the Beijing area spanning from January 2020 to January 2022. The experimental results show that the metrics of the proposed ResGA-Net outperform those of various contrastive algorithms, and compared to the original FY-4A CTH product, the RMSE and MAE have decreased by 37.89% and 34.77%, while the PCC and SRCC have increased by 11.17% and 9.47%, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed method presented in this paper. Accurate air quality prediction is of great significance for pollution prevention and disaster prevention. Effective and reliable prediction models are needed not only for short time prediction, but are even more important for long time-series future predictions. In the long time series, most of the current models might not function as accurately as in the short period and thus a new model is required. In this paper, the new PM2.5 predictor is proposed to achieve accurate long time series PM2.5 prediction in Beijing. The predictor simplifies the input parameters through Spearman correlation analysis and implements the long time series prediction through Informer. The results show that AQI, CO, NO2, and PM10 concentrations are selected from the air quality data, and Dew Point Temperature (DEWP) and wind speed are incorporated from two meteorological data to better improve the prediction efficiency by almost 27%. By comparing with LSTM and attention-LSTM models, the model constructed in this paper performs well in different prediction time periods, with at least 21%, 19%, 28%, and 35% improvement in accuracy in four prediction time series: 48 h, 7 days, 14 days, and 30 days. In conclusion, the proposed model is proved to solve the problem of predicting long time series PM2.5 concentrations in the future, which can make up for the shortcomings of the currently existing models and have good application value. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) has strong chemical and biological effects on human health and ecosystems, and it plays an important role in the atmospheric environment by affecting photochemical processes, etc. Clouds and aerosols are the main factors affecting UV radiation and analyzing the quantitative impact of them on UV radiation is of great significance. Using the observation data of UV radiation in Beijing from 2005 to 2020, as well as the data of aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo (SSA), and other related parameters, this paper simulated the surface UV radiation in two scenarios of cloudless without aerosol and cloudless with aerosol based on the TUV (Tropospheric Ultraviolet-Visible model), and quantitatively evaluated the attenuation of UV radiation by aerosol and cloud in the Beijing area. The results show that UV radiation is more sensitive to changes in AOD. Fixing the SSA value to 0.9, when the AOD increases from 0.2 to 1.0, the UV radiation decreases from 21.16 W/m2 to 12.64 W/m2 at 12:00; when AOD is maintained at 0.64, the SSA increases from 0.7 to 0.95, and the UV radiation increases from 14.55 W/m2 to 19.91 W/m2. The average annual attenuation rates of ultraviolet radiation by aerosols and clouds from 2005 to 2020 are 30.64% and 40.22%, respectively; the monthly averaged attenuation rates are 30.48% and 42.04%, respectively; and the daily averaged attenuation rates are 31.02% and 50.45%, respectively. To predict and explore the return period wind speed distribution in Beijing urban area, based on the short-term measured wind speed record, the measured independent storm peak samples are extracted and the Monte–Carlo numerical simulation method is used to randomly generate pseudo-independent storm peak samples with the same distribution as the independent storm peak samples. In addition, the appropriate threshold is used to select and extract the over-threshold independent storm peak samples from the measured samples. And, then, the return period wind speed of the whole wind direction is predicted. Further, the traditional Cook method is used to predict and analyze the return period wind speed of each wind direction according to the measured wind speed data. The results show that the return period wind speed prediction results of the whole wind direction corresponding to the simulated pseudo samples and the measured over-threshold samples are basically close to each other, and the maximum relative deviation is less than 7%. The mean relative deviation of the return period wind speed prediction results is about 10.6% between each wind direction and the whole wind direction, and the mean relative deviation is about 9.4% between the RPWS prediction result of each wind direction and the design value of the code. In addition, the return period wind speed prediction values of the west by southwest, northwest and north by northeast wind directions exceed the design value of the code, while the predicted values of the other wind directions are within the envelope range of the design value of the code. During the "Parade Blue" period in 2015, Beijing and its surrounding areas implemented mandatory temporary source control strategies, which provided experimental conditions for studying the effects of source emission control measures on the sources of atmospheric PM2.5. Analyzing the source contribution rate of the main particulate matters via the source analysis method of the receptor model is an important method for studying the atmospheric pollution. Previous studies on the "Parade Blue" period only discussed the change in PM2.5 concentration during the source control period and the source non-control period, but did not select appropriate emission sources and acceptor components to analyze the contribution ratio of each emission source to fine particulate matter pollution. In this paper, based on the receptor component spectrum and emission source component spectrum, the chemical mass balance receptor model was used for source analysis. The results showed that outdoor PM2.5 concentration was 26.31 μg/m3 in the source control period, which was less than the 40.08 μg/m3 in the source non-control period. In the source control period, motor vehicle emissions, industrial combustion and urban fugitive dust contributed significantly to the fine particulate pollution, accounting for 76–81%, 8–9% and 11–16%, respectively. In the source non-control period, the contributions of motor vehicle emissions and industrial combustion accounted for 57–59% and 41–43%, respectively, significantly higher than that of urban fugitive dust, which accounted for less than 2%. The correlation between the contribution rate of emission sources and the source control strategy was studied and analyzed during the "Parade Blue" period, and the effectiveness of the source control strategy was proved. In recent years, the concentrations of PM2.5 in urban ambient air in China have been declining; however, the strong atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) represents challenges to the further reduction of PM2.5 concentration and the continuous improvement of ambient air quality in China in the future, since the overall AOC is still at a high level. For this paper, based on ground observation data recorded in Beijing from 2016 to 2019, the variation in AOC was characterized according to the concentration of odd oxygen (OX = O3 + NO2). The concentrations of the primary and secondary components of PM2.5 were analyzed using empirical formulas, the correlation between AOC and the concentrations of secondary PM2.5 and the secondary inorganic components (SO42−, NO3−, NH4+, and SNA) in Beijing were explored, the impact of atmospheric photochemical reaction activity on the generation of atmospheric secondary particles was evaluated, and the impact of atmospheric oxidation variations on PM2.5 concentrations and SNA in Beijing was investigated. The results revealed that OX concentrations reached their peak in 2016 and reached their lowest point in 2019. The OX concentrations followed a descending seasonal trend of summer, spring, autumn, and winter, along with a spatial descending trend from urban observation stations to suburban stations and background stations. The degree of photochemical activity and the magnitude of the AOC have a large influence on the production of atmospheric secondary particles. When the photochemical reaction was more active and the AOC was stronger, the mass concentrations of the secondary generated PM2.5 fraction were higher and accounted for a higher proportion of the total PM2.5 mass concentrations. In the PM2.5 fraction, SNA accounted for 50.7% to 94.4% of the total mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions in the field observations. Higher concentrations of the atmospheric oxidant OX in ambient air corresponded to a higher sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR), suggesting that the increase in AOC could promote the increase of PM2.5 concentration. Based on a relationship analysis of SOR, NOR, and OX, it was inferred that the relationship between OX and SOR and the relationship between OX and NOR were both nonlinear. Therefore, when establishing PM2.5 control strategies in Beijing in the future, the impact of the AOC on PM2.5 generation should be fully considered, and favorable measures should be taken to properly regulate the AOC, which would be more effective when carrying out further control measures regarding PM2.5 pollution. Clarifying the pattern of the urban greenhouse gas (GHG) budget and its influencing factors is the basis of promoting urban low-carbon development. This paper takes Beijing and Shenzhen—the capital city and the most rapidly developing city in China, respectively—as case studies, comprehensively accounts their GHG budgets from 2005 to 2020, and investigates and compares the factors affecting their GHG budgets. The total GHG emissions in Beijing were lowest in 2005 (160.3 TgCO2 equivalents) and peaked at 227.7 TgCO2 equivalents in 2019, and then decreased to 209.1 TgCO2 equivalents in 2020. Meanwhile, the total GHG emissions in Shenzhen gradually increased from 36.0 TgCO2 equivalents in 2005 to 121.4 TgCO2 equivalents in 2019, and then decreased to 119.1 TgCO2 equivalents in 2020. The energy activity sector was the greatest contributor to GHG emissions in this period, accounting for 82.5% and 76.0% of the total GHG emissions in Beijing and Shenzhen, respectively. The carbon sink of the ecosystems of these two cities could absorb only small parts of their emissions, and the neutralization rates of sinks ranged from 1.7% to 2.3% in Beijing and from 0.3% to 1.5% in Shenzhen. The enhancement of population, economic product, and consumption increased the greenhouse gas emissions in both cities. A 1% increase in population size, per capita GD (gross domestic product), and residential consumption level would increase total GHG emissions by 0.181%, 0.019%, and 0.030% in Beijing, respectively. The corresponding increases in Shenzhen would be 0.180%, 0.243%, and 0.172%, respectively. The household size had opposite effects on the two cities, i.e., a 1% increase in household size would increase GHG emissions by 0.487% in Shenzhen but reduce them by 2.083% in Beijing. Each 1% increase in secondary industry and energy intensity would reduce GHG emissions by 0.553% and 0.110% in Shenzhen, respectively, which are more significant reductions than those in Beijing. China has made remarkable achievements in reducing carbon emissions in recent years. However, there is still much reduction room before achieving carbon neutrality. In Beijing, the capital of China, it is a strategic choice to respond to global climate change by promoting green and low-carbon development. This paper calculates the carbon dioxide emissions of key industries in Beijing and analyzes the temporal evolution trend of carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide emissions in Beijing before 2030 are predicted based on the grey prediction GM (1,1) and BP neural network model. The effects of factors of carbon dioxide emissions are discussed using the threshold regression model under different economic conditions. The results show that energy consumption intensity, GDP per capita, and the ownership of civil cars have a positive impact on carbon dioxide emissions, while the number of permanent residents and urban green space areas have a negative impact on carbon dioxide emissions. These findings of carbon emission prediction and influencing factors contribute to carbon reduction path design. Related policy implications on carbon emission reduction are put forward from the aspects of promoting industrial upgrading, accelerating the construction of advanced economic structures, optimizing transportation structures, and strengthening green building development. Quickly obtaining accurate soil quality information is the premise for accurate agricultural production and increased crop yield. With the development of the digital information industry, smart agriculture has become a new trend in agricultural development and there is increasing demand for efficiently and intelligently acquiring good soil quality information. Scientists worldwide have developed many remote sensing quantitative inversion models, which need to be systematized and intelligent for agricultural personnel to enjoy the dividends of information technology such as 3S (remote sensing, geographic information system, and global navigation satellite system) techniques. Accordingly, to meet the need of farmers, agricultural managers, and agricultural researchers to acquire timely information on regional soil quality, in this paper, we designed a cloud platform for inversion analysis of moisture, nutrient, salinity, and other important soil quality indicators. The platform was developed using ArcGIS (The software is produced by the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. of America in Redlands, CL, USA) and GeoScene (The software is produced by GeoScene Information Technology Co.,Ltd., Beijing, China) software, with Java and JavaScript as programing languages and SQL Server as the database management system with a PC client, a web client, and a mobile app. On the basis of the existing quantitative remote sensing models, the platform realizes mapping functions, intelligent inversion of soil moisture–nutrient–salinity (SMNS) content, data analysis mining, soil knowledge base, platform management, and so on. It can help different users acquire, manage, and analyze data and make decisions based on the data. In addition, the platform can customize model parameters according to regional characteristics, improving analysis accuracy and expanding the application area. Overall, the platform employs 3S techniques, Internet technology, and mobile communication technology synthetically and realizes intelligent inversion and decision analysis of significant soil quality information, such as moisture–nutrient–salinity content. This platform has been applied to the analysis of soil indicators in several areas and has produced good operational results and benefits. As a market-based instrument for transportation demand management, a transport fee-charging policy can not only effectively reduce traffic congestion, but also improve air quality. Considering the urgent need to improve urban transport fee-charging policies and reduce transport carbon emissions, the paper focuses on the role of the performance of fee-charging policies in reducing the carbon emissions of urban transport. In this study, we propose a methodological framework for the performance evaluation of urban traffic carbon emission fee-charging policies. First, we analyze the current situation of the implementation of fee-charging policies and their relationship with urban traffic congestion. Subsequently, we analyze changing trends of carbon emissions associated with transportation travel in Beijing in recent years, to identify the main sources of carbon emissions from transport. Finally, we used the DEA method to evaluate the performance of the fee policies for urban transport, which are meant to reduce carbon emissions, analyze their implementation efficiency, and then discuss the main factors affecting their efficiency. The results show that with the implementation of fee-charging policies, urban traffic congestion has eased. The overall carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transportation in Beijing grew rapidly. CO2 emissions generated by car travel are the main source of carbon emissions from transportation in Beijing. The average value of the overall technical efficiency (TE) of Beijing's fee-charging policies to reduce transportation carbon emissions from 2006 to 2018 is 0.962, indicating that the overall implementation of Beijing's fee-charging policies has been effective. Adjustments to the fee structure reduce motor vehicle travel to an extent, increase the proportion of green travel, and reduce the intensity of transportation carbon emissions. The technical non-efficiency in Beijing's fee-charging policy is mainly due to non-efficiency of scale, followed by pure technical non-efficiency. In the rapid urbanization process, climate change has a huge impact on the urban thermal environment, and the urban heat island has attracted widespread attention from society. How to better detect, analyze, and evaluate the urban heat island effect has become a hot issue in current urban environmental research. However, the correlation analysis of heat island factors mostly adopts the conventional least square method, without considering the correlation of and the interaction between spatial elements. At the same time, the single analysis method makes it difficult to analyze environmental problems scientifically, which leads to great bias. Therefore, in this paper, the spatial autoregressive confusion model was used to analyze the satellite data of Beijing, and a preliminary temperature model of Beijing for all seasons was established. The regression results show that the surface temperature of Beijing has a strong spatial autocorrelation, and that the modified normalized difference water index and the normalized differential vegetation index have a strong negative effect on the land surface temperature. The prediction models established in this study can provide accurate and sustainable data support in the urbanization process and aid in the creation of a sustainable and effective urban environment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic and hazardous volatile environmental pollutants that have been studied as possible major causative agents of lung cancer in Xuanwei. In this paper, indoor and outdoor PM2.5 samples were collected from two homes at different time periods in Hutou, the lung cancer epidemic area in Xuanwei. The results showed that PAH pollution levels from coal combustion in Xuanwei lung cancer epidemic area were significant. The mass concentrations of total PAHs, major carcinogenic compounds, and benzo[a]pyrene-based equivalent concentration (BaPeq) were significantly higher in the coal-using home than in the electricity-using home. For the coal-using home, the PAHs were mainly derived from coal combustion. For the electricity-using home, the PAHs might have been a combination of traffic and coal combustion sources. The human health risk due to inhalation exposure to the PAHs was represented by the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of the inhalation exposure. The results showed that the indoor cancer risk for the coal-using home in Xuanwei is higher than that of the electricity-using home and much higher than that of Chinese megacities such as Beijing and Tianjin. Long-term exposure to indoor coal-burning environments containing high levels of PAHs may be one of the main reasons for the high incidence of lung cancer in Xuanwei. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Air pollution is a growing problem and poses a challenge to people's healthy lives. Accurate prediction of air pollutant concentrations is considered the key to air pollution warning and management. In this paper, a novel PM2.5 concentration prediction model, CBAM-CNN-Bi LSTM, is constructed by deep learning techniques based on the principles related to spatial big data. This model consists of the convolutional block attention module (CBAM), the convolutional neural network (CNN), and the bi-directional long short-term memory neural network (Bi LSTM). CBAM is applied to the extraction of feature relationships between pollutant data and meteorological data and assists in deeply obtaining the spatial distribution characteristics of PM2.5 concentrations. As the output layer, Bi LSTM obtains the variation pattern of PM2.5 concentrations from spatial data, overcomes the problem of long-term dependence on PM2.5 concentrations, and achieves the task of accurately forecasting PM2.5 concentrations at multiple sites. Based on real datasets, we perform an experimental evaluation and the results show that, in comparison to other models, CBAM-CNN-Bi LSTM improves the accuracy of PM2.5 concentration prediction. For the prediction tasks from 1 to 12 h, our proposed prediction model performs well. For the 13 to 48 h prediction task, the CBAM-CNN-Bi LSTM also achieves satisfactory results. PM2.5 and PM10 in the atmosphere seriously affect human health and air quality, a situation which has aroused widespread concern. In this paper, we analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from 2016 to 2021 based on real-time monitoring data. In addition, we also explore the influence of meteorological conditions on pollutants. The results show that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are similarly distribution in temporal and spatial from 2016 to 2021, and the average concentrations of both show a decreasing trend. The ratio of PM2.5 to PM10 is decreasing, indicating that the proportion of fine particles is declining. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are higher in spring and winter, but lower in summer. Spatially, it shows a gradual shift from the characteristic of "high in the south and low in the north" to a uniform homogenization across districts. The spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations is synchronous by applying empirical orthogonal functions (EOF). The first EOF pattern exhibits a consistent characteristic of high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The second pattern EOF reflects the effect of impairing PM2.5 concentrations in the southeast during the winter of 2016–2018. The PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are significantly negatively correlated with wind speed and precipitation in both spring and winter. On the other hand, from the perspective of the circulation situation, the southeasterly and weak westerly wind in spring produce convergence resulting in higher particulate matter concentrations in the south than in the north in Beijing. The westerly wind is flatter at 700 hPa geopotential height, which is conducive to the formation of stationary weather. The vertical direction of airflow in spring and winter is dominated by convergence and sinking, indicating the weak dispersion ability of the atmosphere. The reason for the accumulation of particulate matter at the surface is investigated, which is beneficial to provide the theoretical basis for air quality management and pollution control in Beijing. Research on the enhanced control and emission-reduction measures to improve air quality during major events could provide data theory and scientific support for air-quality improvement during non-activities. Based on the air-quality data published by the China Environmental Monitoring Station and the meteorological elements and weather conditions released by the China Meteorological Administration, this paper explored the characteristics of air-quality evolution in Beijing from 5 August to 18 September 2015 and the weather situation during the Military Parade. The results showed that: (1) Emission-reduction measures implemented for air quality by Beijing and its surrounding area were induced, and we explored the contribution of these measures to pollutants or AQI in the locality. (2) During the 2015 Military Parade, Beijing was in the front or lower part of the high-pressure system. Due to the strong effect of North or Northeast winds, the weather situation was conducive to the diffusion of pollutants. When before or after the implementation, once the atmospheric diffusion was poor, the pollutants would accumulate gradually. Thus, it can be seen that the weather situation had a great impact on air quality. (3) During the implementation, PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and other pollutants decreased significantly, of which the concentration of PM10 decreased the most, from 109 μg·m−3 down to 34 μg·m−3, and the concentration of PM2.5 decreased by 72.73%. According to the changes between before and during the implementation or during and after the implementation, the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 increased when the implementation of the emission-reduction measures had been finished, indicating that the enhanced control measures made a great contribution to the emission reduction in particles. (4) In addition, the annual average of AQI in the three years is 87.49, and the average value of a normal year was the average value of 2013 and 2014. The average value of the normal year during the military parade is 64.63, which was 70.40% lower than the average value of AQI during the military parade. The goal of reaching the secondary standard of GB-3095-2012 was achieved, and there was still a long way to go from the primary standard. Air pollution caused by coal burning not only increases the cost of environmental pollution but also harms human health. It is urgent for China to change the practice of coal-fired central heating. Therefore, the effectiveness and sustainability of the Coal to Gas and Electricity policy have become the focus of all sectors of society. In this paper, eight cities in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region were taken as the experimental groups and the other eleven cities as the control groups. Based on the PSM-DID model and the time-varying DID model, a quasi-natural experimental analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of the policy of coal to gas and electricity to improve air quality in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region from 2015 to 2020 and to test the sustainability of the policy. Three research conclusions are shown below: First, during the implementation of the policy, especially in 2019, the AQI index decreased significantly. Although there was a rebound thereafter, it was still lower than before. This shows that the Coal to Gas and Electricity policy has indeed improved the air quality in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei during its implementation. Second, the policy had a great impact on SO2 and PM10 but was relatively weak on PM2.5 and CO. Therefore, there is an urgent need to formulate scientific and accurate policies to control different air pollutants. Third, the time-varying DID model was used to identify the dynamic sustainability effect of the Coal to Gas and Electricity policy. The results showed that the policy had a strong impact in the initial stage, but its effect was greatly reduced at the end of the implementation or near the end, when it was far less obvious than in the initial stage of the policy. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is one of the most important parameters of aerosol and a key physical quantity to characterize atmospheric turbidity and air pollution. Accurate retrieval of AOD is of great significance for air quality assessment. However, the spatial resolution of the currently widely used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOD products is too low to meet the application research of atmospheric environment at the regional scale. In 2013, China launched the Gaofen-1 (GF-1) satellite, which provides a new idea for AOD retrieval. In this paper, we apply the synergetic use of TERRA and AQUA satellite MODIS data to calculate the high-resolution AOD over Beijing based on the Synergetic Retrieval of Aerosol Properties algorithm (SRAP) and discussed scale conversion problems between AODs with different resolutions. To obtain the 100 m MODIS data, we use GF-1 wide-field-of-view data to downscale 1 km MODIS data based on mutual information method. The retrieved AOD has a spatial resolution of 100 m and can cover many land surface types. Preliminary validation was carried out with the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) ground observation data. The correlation coefficient is about 0.88, and the root-mean-square error is about 0.15. Due to the high resolution of retrieved results, more detailed features can be provided in the spatial distribution. As a kind of air pollution, haze has complex temporal and spatial characteristics. From the perspective of time, haze has different causes and levels of pollution in different seasons. From the perspective of space, the concentration of haze in adjacent areas will affect each other, showing some correlation. In this paper, we construct a multi-convolution haze-level prediction model for predicting haze levels in different areas of Beijing, which uses the remote sensing satellite image of the Beijing divided into nine regions as input and the haze pollution level as output. We categorize the predictions into four seasons in chronological order and use frequency histograms to analyze haze levels in different regions in different seasons. The results show that the haze pollution in the southern regions is significantly different from that in the northern regions. In addition, the haze tends to be clustered in adjacent areas. We use Global Moran's I to analyze the predictions and find that haze is related to the geographical location in summer and autumn. We also use Local Moran's I, Moran scatter plot, and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) to study the spatial characteristics of haze in adjacent areas. The results show, for the spatial distribution of haze in Beijing, that the southern regions present a high-high agglomeration, while the northern regions exhibit a 'low-low agglomeration. The temporal evolution of haze on the seasonal scale, according to the chronological order of winter, spring, and summer to autumn, shows that the haze gradually becomes agglomerated. Based on the mean sea level pressure field and 10-meter wind field across eastern China, weather patterns were classified using principal component analysis in the T-model (T-PCA), and four weather conditions were identified. Weather conditions and meteorological factors affecting the winter PM2.5 concentration in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region and the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) were also analyzed. The results showed that there were significant differences in the PM2.5 distribution between BTH and the YRD under different weather conditions. The intensity and path of cold air played important roles in regulating the PM2.5 concentration distribution in eastern China. For the BTH region, under type 2 and type 4 conditions, the weather was stable, and heavy pollution frequently occurred; however, under type 1 and type 3 conditions, cold air was active, and the air quality improved. For the YRD, both type 1 and type 4 conditions lead to high PM2.5 concentrations in this region. Type 1 cold air flows southward along the northwestern path and is beneficial for transporting pollutants from BTH to the YRD, causing a high probability of PM2.5 pollution. Most studies on Chinese dormitories are carried out in summer, while few focus on a transition season or winter. This study evaluated the air quality of a student dormitory in a university in the Beijing area by using a questionnaire survey and on-site measurements. The CO2 concentration was used as an indoor air quality evaluation index to characterize the freshness of the air, and different window opening conditions in the dormitory were simulated, with corresponding improvement plans proposed. The results of this study revealed that the air quality and thermal comfort of the student dormitories during a transition season and winter fell short of expectations. According to the survey, students who opened their windows frequently had a better subjective perception of the air quality. However, due to the large temperature difference between day and night, more than 80% of the students felt too cold when opening the windows. For daytime conditions, the area of unilateral ventilation window opening should not be less than 0.39 m2, the area of bilateral ventilation window opening should not be less than 0.13 m2, and the time taken to close the windows and doors should not exceed the maximum ventilation interval. Empirical equations were fitted for nighttime conditions based on the CO2 concentration, number of people in the room, and window opening area, resulting in a reasonable window opening area of 0.349 m2~0.457 m2. In sum, this study assessed the air quality status within typical university dormitories across varying seasons, gaining a clear understanding of how different ventilation strategies and occupant densities influence air freshness and thermal comfort. Lidar observations of metal layers play a significant role in research on the chemistry and dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. This work reports on Fe lidar observations conducted in Beijing and Mohe. Utilizing the same laser emission system, a 1064 nm seed laser was injected into an Nd: YAG laser to generate a single longitudinal-mode pulse 532 nm laser, which pumped a dye laser to produce a 572 nm laser. The 572 nm laser and the remaining 1064 nm fundamental frequency laser passed through a sum–frequency module to generate a 372 nm laser to detect the Fe layer. According to a total of 52.6 h of observations for 10 nights in Beijing, the Fe layer has an average column density of 1.24 × 1010 cm−2, an RMS width of 4.4 km and a centroid altitude of 89.4 km. In Mohe, observed for 16 nights and a total of 91.5 h, the Fe layer has an average column density of 1.08 × 1010 cm−2, an RMS width of 4.6 km and a centroid altitude of 89.5 km. The probability of the occurrence of sporadic Fe layers was 42.4% in Beijing and 29.4% in Mohe. Compared to simultaneously observed Na layers, the occurrence probabilities of sporadic Fe layers were higher than those of sporadic Na layers in both stations. Based on the two cases observed in Beijing, it is conjectured that the formation mechanism of sporadic metal layers above approximately 100 km has a more significant influence on sporadic Fe layers than on sporadic Na layers. The lower thermospheric Fe layers with densities significantly larger than those of the main layer were observed during two nights in Mohe. To assess the quality of the retrieved products from ground-based microwave radiometers, the "clear-sky" Level-2 data (LV2) products (profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity) filtered through a radiometer in Beijing during the 24 months from January 2010 to December 2011 were compared with radiosonde data. Evident differences were revealed. Therefore, this paper investigated an approach to calibrate the observed brightness temperatures by using the model-simulated brightness temperatures as a reference under clear-sky conditions. The simulation was completed with a radiative transfer model and National Centers for Environmental Prediction final analysis (NCEP FNL) data that are independent of the radiometer system. Then, the least-squares method was used to invert the calibrated brightness temperatures to the atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. A comparison between the retrievals and radiosonde data showed that the calibration of the brightness temperature observations is necessary, and can improve the inversion of temperature and humidity profiles compared with the original LV2 products. Specifically, the consistency with radiosonde was clearly improved: the correlation coefficients are increased, especially, the correlation coefficient for water vapor density increased from 0.2 to 0.9 around the 3 km height; the bias decreased to nearly zero at each height; the RMSE (root of mean squared error) for temperature profile was decreased by more than 1 degree at most heights; the RMSE for water vapor density was decreased from greater than 4 g/m3 to less than 1.5 g/m3 at 1 km height; and the decrease at all other heights were also noticeable. In this paper, the evolution of a temperature inversion process is given as an example, using the high-temporal-resolution brightness temperature after quality control to obtain a temperature and humidity profile every two minutes. Therefore, the characteristics of temperature inversion that cannot be seen by conventional radiosonde data (twice daily) were obtained by radiometer. This greatly compensates for the limited temporal coverage of radiosonde data. The approach presented by this paper is a valuable reference for the reprocessing of the historical observations, which have been accumulated for years by less-calibrated radiometers. The mechanism of aerosol pollution transport remains highly elusive owing to the myriad of influential factors. In this study, ground station data, satellite data, ground-based LiDAR remote sensing data, sounding data, ERA5 reanalysis and a backward trajectory model were combined to investigate the formation process and optical properties of winter aerosol pollution in Beijing and surrounding areas. The analysis of ground station data shows that compared to 2019 and 2021, the pandemic lockdown policy resulted in a decrease in the total number of pollution days and a decrease in the average concentration of particulate matter in the Beijing area in 2020. The terrain characteristics of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) made it prone to northeast and southwest winds. The highest incidence of aerosol pollution in Beijing occurs in February and March during the spring and winter seasons. Analysis of a typical heavy aerosol pollution process in the Beijing area from 28 February to 5 March 2019 shows that dust and fine particulate matter contributed to the primary pollution; surface air temperature inversion and an average wind speed of less than 3 m/s were conducive to the continuous accumulation of pollutants, which was accompanied by the oxidation reaction of NO2 and O3, forming photochemical pollution. The heavy aerosol pollution was transmitted and diffused towards the southeast, gradually eliminating the pollution. The advantages of performing aerosol retrieval with multi-angle, multi-spectral photopolarimetric measurements over intensity-only measurements come from this technique's sensitivity to aerosols' microphysical properties, such as their particle size, shape, and complex refraction index. In this study, an extended LUT (Look Up Table) algorithm inherited from a previous work based on the assumption of surface reflectance spectral shape invariance is proposed and applied to PARASOL (Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Science coupled with Observations from a Lidar) measurements to retrieve aerosols' optical properties including aerosol optical depth (AOD) and aerosol fine-mode fraction (FMF). Case studies conducted over East China for different aerosol scenes are investigated. A comparison between the retrieved AOD regional distribution and the corresponding MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) C6 AOD products shows similar spatial distributions in the Jing-Jin-Ji (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, China's mega city cluster) region. The PARASOL AOD retrievals were compared against the AOD measurements of seven AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) stations in China to evaluate the performance of the retrieval algorithm. In the fine-particle-dominated regions, lower RMSEs were found at Beijing and Hefei urban stations (0.16 and 0.18, respectively) compared to those at other fine-particle-dominated AERONET stations, which can be attributed to the assumption of surface reflectance spectral shape invariance that has significant advantages in separating the contribution of surface and aerosol scattering in urban areas. For the FMF validation, an RMSE of 0.23, a correlation of 0.57, and a bias of −0.01 were found. This study examined the impact of temporary air quality control measures on reducing pollutants during the 2022 Winter Olympics in China, utilizing real-time monitoring data from 2017 and 2022 to assess spatial and temporal variations in critical air pollutant concentrations. The results showed that concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, and NO2 in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region during the Olympic Games showed a marked decrease compared to the historical period, with reductions of 36.59%, 20.35%, 33.95%, 28.90%, and 22.70%, respectively. Significant north–south spatial differences were observed in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province during the Olympic period. The cities of Zhangjiakou, Chengde, Qinhuangdao, Beijing, and Tangshan showed the most significant pollution reduction. Based on assessments conducted during the Olympic period, it was noted that more than 95% of the daily average concentrations of pollutants are below the maximum values set by the World Health Organization for the interim target. Our research shows that provisional regulations effectively control the emission of air pollutants, providing a solid reference and basis for ensuring air quality during major international events. A long-term vertical ozone observational dataset has been provided during 2001–2019 by ozonesonde measurements in Beijing on the North China Plain. Previous studies using this dataset primarily focused on the vertical characteristics of climatological ozone and its variation; however, the driving factors of ozone variation have not been well discussed. In this study, by applying the wavelet analysis method (including continuous wavelet transform and cross wavelet) and sliding correlation coefficients to ~20 years of ozonesonde measurements collected in Beijing, we analyzed the dominant modes of ozone column variability within three height ranges over Beijing (total column ozone: TOT; stratospheric column ozone: SCO; and tropospheric column ozone: TCO). Moreover, we also preliminarily discussed the relationship between these three ozone columns and the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO), and 11-year solar activity cycle. The results revealed that the ozone columns within the three height ranges predominantly adhered to interannual variability patterns, and the short-term variabilities in TOT and SCO may have been related to eruptive volcanic activity. In comparison to the TOT and SCO, the TCO was more susceptible to the forcing influences of high-frequency factors such as pollutant transport. Similar to the results in other mid-latitude regions, strong ENSO and QBO signals were revealed in the interannual ozone column variability over Beijing. The TOT and SCO showed positive anomalous responses to ENSO warm-phase events, and the peak of the ENSO warm phase led the winter peaks of the TOT and SCO by approximately 3–6 months. During the strong cold–warm transition phase in 2009–2012, the TOT and SCO showed a significant positive correlation with the ENSO index. The strong seasonality of the meridional circulation process driven by the QBO led to a significant positive correlation between the QBO index and the TOT and SCO in the interannual cycle, except for two periods of abnormal QBO fluctuations in 2010–2012 and 2015–2017, whereas the TCO showed a time-lagged correlation of approximately 3 months in the annual cycle relative to the QBO due to the influence of the thermodynamic tropopause. In addition, analysis of the F10.7 index and the ozone columns revealed that the ozone columns over Beijing exhibited lagged responses to the peaks of sunspot activity, and there was no obvious correlation between ozone columns and 11-year solar activity cycle. Given the complex driving mechanism of the climatic factors on local ozone variability, the preliminary results obtained in this study still require further validation using longer time series of observational data and the combination of chemical models and more auxiliary data. Determining accurate PM2.5 pollution concentrations and understanding their dynamic patterns are crucial for scientifically informed air pollution control strategies. Traditional reliance on linear correlation coefficients for ascertaining PM2.5-related factors only uncovers superficial relationships. Moreover, the invariance of conventional prediction models restricts their accuracy. To enhance the precision of PM2.5 concentration prediction, this study introduces a novel integrated model that leverages feature selection and a clustering algorithm. Comprising three components—feature selection, clustering, and integrated prediction—the model first employs the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-III) to identify the most impactful features affecting PM2.5 concentration within air pollutants and meteorological factors. This step offers more valuable feature data for subsequent modules. The model then adopts a two-layer clustering method (SOM+K-means) to analyze the multifaceted irregularity within the dataset. Finally, the model establishes the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) weak learner for each classification, integrating multiple weak learners using the AdaBoost algorithm to obtain a comprehensive prediction model. Through feature correlation enhancement, data irregularity exploration, and model adaptability improvement, the proposed model significantly enhances the overall prediction performance. Data sourced from 12 Beijing-based monitoring sites in 2016 were utilized for an empirical study, and the model's results were compared with five other predictive models. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed model significantly heightens prediction accuracy, offering useful insights and potential for broadened application to multifactor correlation concentration prediction methodologies for other pollutants. Black carbon (BC), an important component of atmospheric aerosol, plays a significant role in regional climate, hydrological cycle, variation of monsoon rainfall, and human health. The 40-year detailed atmospheric BC over China from 1981 to 2020 is systematically investigated through the MERRA-2 reanalysis dataset. MERRA-2 BC generally showed a good correlation (R = 0.68) compared with 673 monthly samples from ground-based observation at 35 stations around China. The overall annual average of MERRA-2 BC concentration over China is 1.15 μg/m3, with a fast growth rate during 1981–2007 and a relatively slow decrease after that. The winter season has the highest mean concentration of BC, followed by autumn and spring, whereas summer shows relatively weaker values. The order of annual average BC concentrations during 1981–2020 is Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH, 4.02 μg/m3) > Sichuan Basin (SB, 3.94 μg/m3) > Yangtze River Delta (YRD, 2.68 μg/m3) > Pearl River Delta (PRD, 1.47 μg/m3). The monthly mean BC concentrations over the BTH, YRD, PRD and SB are estimated to be smallest 3.18 μg/m3 in May, 1.94 μg/m3 in August, 0.82 μg/m3 in July, 3.04 μg/m3 in June, respectively, whilst largest consistently in December with 5.09 μg/m3, 3.83 μg/m3, 2.12 μg/m3, and 5.41 μg/m3, respectively. Our study indicates the primary potential source areas for BC are concentrated in the research city and its surroundings. Beijing and Chengdu are more BC-polluted areas than Shanghai and Guangzhou. Long-distance, regional transfer from south BTH contributes importantly to BC pollution in Beijing under the influence of prevailing southerly winds. Many studies have shown that air pollutants have complex impacts on urban precipitation. Meteorological weather station and satellite Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product data from the last 20 years, combined with simulation results from the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), this paper focuses on the effects of air pollutants on summer precipitation in different regions of Beijing. These results showed that air pollution intensity during the summer affected the precipitation contribution rate (PCR) of plains and mountainous regions in the Beijing area, especially in the plains. Over the past 20 years, plains PCR increased by ~10% when the AOD augmented by 0.15, whereas it decreased with lower pollution levels. In contrast, PCR in mountainous areas decreased with higher pollution levels and increased with lower pollution levels. Our analysis from model results indicated that aerosol increases reduce the effective particle size of cloud droplets and raindrops. Smaller cloud raindrops more readily transport to high air layers and participate in the generation of ice-phase substances in the clouds, increasing the total amount of cloud water in the air in a certain time, which ultimately enhanced precipitation intensity on the plains. Air contamination is identified with individuals' wellbeing and furthermore affects the sustainable development of economy and society. This paper gathered the time series data of seven meteorological conditions variables of Beijing city from 1 November 2013 to 31 October 2017 and utilized the generalized regression neural network optimized by the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO-GRNN) to explore seasonal disparity in the impacts of mean atmospheric humidity, maximum wind velocity, insolation duration, mean wind velocity and rain precipitation on air quality index (AQI). The results showed that in general, the most significant impacting factor on air quality in Beijing is insolation duration, mean atmospheric humidity, and maximum wind velocity. In spring and autumn, the meteorological diffusion conditions represented by insolation duration and mean atmospheric humidity had a significant effect on air quality. In summer, temperature and wind are the most significant variables influencing air quality in Beijing; the most important reason for air contamination in Beijing in winter is the increase in air humidity and the deterioration of air diffusion condition. This study investigates the seasonal effects of meteorological conditions on air contamination and suggests a new research method for air quality research. Analyzing the spatial pattern of urban carbon metabolism could provide insights into spatial adjustments to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Using CASA and empirical coefficients, we quantitatively analyzed and mapped the spatial pattern of the urban carbon metabolism of Beijing and its response to land use change from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that the carbon emission rate of Beijing increased in the first decade and decreased in the next, while the carbon sequestration rate kept rising over the past two decades. The net carbon emission rate of Beijing averaged 1284.52 × 107 kg C yr−1, indicating that the city functioned as a net carbon source throughout the study period. The most harmful carbon transitions were always sourced from the southeastern suburban area, where the natural components were converted to artificial components, while beneficial carbon transitions were in the urban central area, where the artificial component with a higher carbon emission density was converted to the other types of artificial components with relatively a lower carbon emission density, and the northwestern mountainous areas, where land use types transferred out of and into the forest or grass. The spatiotemporal change in urban carbon metabolism was highly correlated with the land use transition, and the land use change from cultivated land to industrial land accounted for 34.87% of the harmful carbon transitions. For curbing the global climate crisis, China has set an ambitious target of peak carbon emissions by 2030. Beijing, the capital of China, has implemented a carbon reduction policy since 2012. Using the reduced and generalized forms of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), we deduce that both the cubic EKC and the genetic algorithm-based EKC have an N-shape. The first turning point of the three-order EKC occurs around 2011, demonstrating the effectiveness of the carbon reduction policy. However, the time series model predicts that Beijing will reach the second turning point around 2026, when the gross domestic product (GDP) is about CNY 5000 billion and carbon emissions will begin to increase again. Interpretable machine learning is proposed to explore the socio-economic drivers in carbon emissions, indicating that total energy consumption and GDP contribute the most. Therefore, we should accelerate the upgrading of energy consumption and adjust the industrial structure, thus facilitating Beijing to its peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. The heating and cooling energy consumption levels of urban buildings account for a large and rapidly growing proportion of the total end-use energy consumption of society. The urban heat island (UHI) effect is an important factor influencing the spatiotemporal variations in the heating and cooling energy consumption levels of buildings. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of the UHI on the heating and cooling energy consumption of buildings in cities of different sizes in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration, which is the most urbanized region in northern China. We selected rural reference stations using the remote sensing method, and applied an hourly data set from automatic weather stations, to examine the impact of the UHI on the typical residential building heating and cooling loads in three cities of varied sizes in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration through building energy simulation. The main conclusions were as follows. As the UHI intensity (UHII) increased, the heating load difference between urban and rural areas decreased, while the cooling load difference between urban and rural areas increased in the cities. The average daily heating loads in the urban areas of Beijing, Tianjin, and Shijiazhuang were 8.14, 10.71, and 2.79% lower than those in their rural areas, respectively, while the average daily cooling loads in the urban areas were 6.88, 6.70, and 0.27% higher than those in their rural areas, respectively. Moreover, the absolute hourly load differences between urban and rural areas were significantly larger during the heating periods than during the cooling periods, with the former characterized by being strong at night and weak during the day. During the peak energy load period, the contribution of the UHI to the peak load of residential buildings varied between the cities. During the stable high-load period, from 18:00 to 07:00 the next day in the heating periods (from 18:00 to 05:00 the next day in the cooling periods), the hourly loads in the urban areas of Beijing, Tianjin, and Shijiazhuang were 3.15 (2.48), 3.88 (1.51), and 1.07% (1.09%) lower (higher) than those in their rural areas, respectively. Using ground-based remote sensing equipment (wind profile radar and microwave radiometer) data and ground automatic station data, a ground-based remote sensing sounding profile system (FAS) is constructed, which aims to make use of its advantages of high resolution, high accuracy, and low cost to make up for the lack of space–time density in existing conventional sounding layer information. The retrieval results of remote sensing sounding profiles in Beijing from May 2021 to September 2022 were tested and evaluated. The results show that the correlation coefficient between FAS and conventional sounding specific humidity is 0.89, the root–mean–square deviation is 1.53 g/kg, and the evolution trends of different data sources of convective available potential energy (CAPE) and vertical wind shear are synchronous. A case study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of 40 severe convective processes in the Beijing Plain area. The results show that, due to the minute-level time resolution of FAS, the retrieved convective parameters could track the evolution trend of the atmospheric state with high timeliness, dynamically describe the configuration of thermodynamic parameters, and indicate the time-varying local convective potential and instability level. The various industries, sectors, and citizens' daily lives have undergone significant changes after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers collected and analyzed PM2.5 samples including secondary inorganic ions (SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+, namely SNA), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and other 16 metal elements in Beijing in 2019 (before the pandemic) and 2020 (after the pandemic). The particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration in the autumn and winter of 2020 is 21.16 µg/m3 and 14.05 µg/m3 lower than in 2019, respectively. The contribution of six sources of pollution, including coal combustion, secondary sources, transportation-related sources, dust, Industrial I, and Industrial II, were analyzed using the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model. Due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are choosing private transportation, such as private cars, instead of public transportation. As a result, the contribution of PM2.5 pollution related to transportation increased after the pandemic. The metal elements measured during the sampling period represent only a very small fraction (1%) of PM2.5. However, their health risk to humans cannot be ignored because of the toxicity of some metallic elements, and the carcinogenic risks induced by metal elements in PM2.5 exceeded the safety threshold (>10−6) during the autumn and winter of 2019 and 2020. Arsenic (As) contributes the most to carcinogenic risk, so controlling arsenic emissions is the primary approach to reducing cancer risk in Beijing. Considering the contribution to the health risk from various sources obtained in PMF, coal combustion is the most significant contributor to cancer risk. There is an important significance for human health in predicting atmospheric concentration precisely. However, due to the complexity and influence of contingency, atmospheric concentration prediction is a challenging topic. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid learning method to make point and interval predictions of PM2.5 concentration simultaneously. Firstly, we optimize Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) by opposition-based learning, fitness-based learning, and Lévy flight. The experiments show that the improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (FOSSA) outperforms SSA-based algorithms. In addition, the improved Sparrow Search Algorithm (FOSSA) is employed to optimize the initial weights of probabilistic forecasting model with autoregressive recurrent network (DeepAR). Then, the FOSSA–DeepAR learning method is utilized to achieve the point prediction and interval prediction of PM2.5 concentration in Beijing, China. The performance of FOSSA–DeepAR is compared with other hybrid models and a single DeepAR model. Furthermore, hourly data of PM2.5 and O3 concentration in Taian of China, O3 concentration in Beijing, China are used to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed FOSSA–DeepAR learning method. Finally, the empirical results illustrate that the proposed FOSSA–DeepAR learning model can achieve more efficient and accurate predictions in both interval and point prediction. In Beijing, the probability of snowfall is decreasing as a result of global warming. At the same time, Beijing has suffered severe air pollution. In this paper, the concentration and particle size characteristics of BC (Black Carbon) in snow during the winter of 2015 in Beijing were analyzed by the SP2 method. The average concentration of BC in snow meltwater in Beijing is 82 ng/mL, with a minimum value of 62.9 ng/mL and a maximum of 210.6 ng/mL. The BC particle size in snow and ice in the Beijing area is mostly concentrated in the range of 70–400 nm. After log-normal, the BC particle size above 600 nm is still small, which should be closely related to the nature of the local BC emission source. The concentration of BC in snow is highly susceptible to meteorological conditions and local pollution levels. When Beijing is under the control of the east wind or the southeast wind, aerosols in the urban areas can easily accumulate in the northwestern mountains and then settle or participate in the snowfall process, resulting in an increase in BC aerosol accumulation in the snow, thus further changing the optical properties of snow in the Beijing area. This paper compares the wind fields measured by the meteor radar at Mohe, Beijing, Wuhan, and Sanya stations and horizontal wind model (HWM14) predictions. HWM14 appears to successfully reproduce the height-time distribution of the monthly mean zonal winds, although large discrepancies occur in wind speed between the model and measurement, especially in the summer and winter months. For meridional wind, the consistency between model prediction and radar observation is worse than that of zonal wind. The consistency between radar measurements and model prediction at Sanya station is worse than other sites located at higher latitudes. Beijing, the capital city of China, has achieved remarkable progress in terms of an improvement in air quality under strict control policies in the past 10 years from various sources. In this paper, the characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and O3 in January 2013 and 2018 in Beijing are discussed on the basis of daily sample analysis and hourly monitoring data. It was found that the PM2.5 pollution for the month of January in Beijing has been greatly curbed. The SO42− concentration and proportion of PM2.5 decreased, while the proportions of NO3− and NH4+ increased. Organic matter represented the major component during the two periods with the proportions of 31.7% ± 8.2% and 31.4% ± 9.8%. The results of the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (Hysplit) model and Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) method showed that air mass from southern nearby regions accounted for 34% and 10% in 2013 and 2018, respectively, which was closely related to the pollution period. Thus, the input direction of air mass in January 2018 was more conducive to the diffusion of pollutants. Modeling results of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) coupled with Comprehensive Air Quality Model Extensions (CAMx) indicated that the contribution of industry sources to PM2.5 and O3 decreased from 2013 to 2018, while mobile sources increased. This was mainly due to the different control policies on various emission sources. In terms of O3 sources, more control measurements should be taken on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to its prominent effect on O3 concentration in both periods. The reduction in emissions and the meteorological conditions both contributed effectively to the sharp decrease in PM2.5 concentration. However, the change in weather conditions had the greater impact on the decrease in PM2.5 concentration, while the reduction in emissions was weakened as a function of this change. Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), one of the substitutes for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), has been widely discussed around the world. In this study, the atmospheric concentrations of PFHxS in Beijing in the summer and autumn of 2021 were monitored, and the gas–particle partitioning and wet and dry deposition characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the average total concentrations of PFHxS in Beijing in the summer and autumn were 1.61 pg/m3 and 1.41 pg/m3, respectively. The particulate fraction φ of PFHxS was about 48% during the research period, and there was a significant positive correlation between φ and air temperatures. The linear fitting relationship between log K p (gas–particle partition coefficient) and log P L (compound vapor pressure) showed that the absorption between the PFHxS molecule and particulate matter dominated the process of gas–particle partitioning. The total deposition flux of PFHxS was the largest in July and the smallest in October, with values of 55.2 and 23.7 ng/m2, respectively. During the study period, PFHxS in the atmosphere had no obvious health impacts on humans. As urbanization continues to accelerate, the urban heat island effects have become one of the most important issues affecting the urban environment and people's living experience. Numerous studies have shown that urban parks and green spaces can effectively alleviate the problem of the urban heat island effect and provide cooling and humidifying effects. Vegetation communities are a fundamental part of urban parklands, and multi-layered vegetation communities are considered to have better cooling and humidifying effects. Previous studies have focused on comparative analyses between different cover types of vegetation communities but have not explored the differences in the cooling and humidifying effects of multi-layered vegetation communities of the same cover type. Therefore, the Olympic Forest Park in Beijing was selected as the subject of this study, and multi-layered vegetation-covered (tree-shrub-grass) with different degrees of densities and uncovered squares were selected for the control and comparison. The cooling and humidifying effects of multi-layered vegetation communities with different canopy densities at different times of the day through field measurements were studied, and the influencing factors for this were analyzed. The results show that the tree cover is the core factor affecting temperature; the degree of the canopy density of multi-layered vegetation communities is significantly and positively correlated with the intensity of cooling and humidification, and the cooling and humidifying effect of multi-layered vegetation communities increases as the degree of canopy density increases. The values of ratio a of the linear relationship between specific attenuation and specific differential phase vary significantly in convective storms as a result of resonance scattering. The best-linear-fit ratio a at X band is determined using the modified attenuation correction algorithm based on differential phase and attenuation, as well as the premise that reflectivity is unattenuated in S band radar detection. Meanwhile, the systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar and S band radar and water layer attenuation (ZW) on the wet antenna cover of the X band radar are also considered. The good performance of the modified correction algorithm is demonstrated in a moderate rainfall event. The data were collected by four X band dual-polarization (X-POL) radar sites, namely, BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ, and a China's New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD/SA radar) site, BJSDX, in Beijing on 20 July 2016. Ratio a is calculated for each volume scan of the X band radar, with a mean value of 0.26 dB deg−1 varying from 0.20 to 0.31 dB deg−1. The average values of systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar (at BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ) and S band radar (at BJSDX) are 0, −3, 2, and 0 dB, respectively. The experimentally determined ZW is in substantial agreement with the theoretically calculated ones, and their values are an order of magnitude smaller than rain attenuation. The comparison of the modified attenuation correction algorithm and the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm is further evaluated at the X-POL radar. It is shown that the modified attenuation correction algorithm in the present paper provides higher correction accuracy for rain attenuation than the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm. In this paper, the feasibility of retrieving the aerosol fine-mode fraction (FMF) from ground-based sky light measurements is investigated. An inversion algorithm, based on the optimal estimation (OE) theory, is presented to retrieve FMF from single-viewing multi-spectral radiance measurements and to evaluate the impact of utilization of near-infrared (NIR) measurements at a wavelength of 1610 nm in aerosol remote sensing. Self-consistency tests based on synthetic data produced a mean relative retrieval error of 4.5%, which represented the good performance of the OE inversion algorithm. The proposed algorithm was also performed on real data taken from field experiments in Beijing during a haze pollution event. The correlation coefficients (R) for the retrieved aerosol volume fine-mode fraction (FMFv) and optical fine-mode fraction (FMFo) against AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) products were 0.94 and 0.95 respectively, and the mean residual error was 4.95%. Consequently, the inversion of FMFv and FMFo could be well constrained by single-viewing multi-spectral radiance measurement. In addition, by introducing measurements of 1610 nm wavelength into the retrieval, the validation results showed a significant improvement in the R value for FMFo (from 0.89–0.94). Greenhouse vegetable production in China not only increases farmers' income, but also increases the risk of nitrogen losses due to excessive water and fertilizer input. Nitrogen losses, including the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), are driven by water content, soil temperature and pH; regulated by available organic carbon and inorganic nitrogen (N); and affected by management. Therefore, a process-based model was applied to explain the complex interaction of the factors affecting N losses in the form of N2O, NH3 and NO3− from a greenhouse vegetable production system in a northeast suburb of Beijing, China. We designed four treatments: two equal N input treatments with one flooding (FP) and the other drip irrigation (FPD) and two equal water input treatments (drip irrigation) with one 100% chemical N input (FPD) and the other 50% N input (OPTD). The last one was CK treatment (flooding without chemical N). We calibrated the WHCNS-veg model using year-round measurements of soil temperature, N2O emission, NH3volatilization, NO3− distribution and yields for greenhouse cucumber–tomato cultivation under farmers' practice (flooding + 100% chemical N, FP). Then, we validated the model using the data sets under drip irrigation (70% of flooding amount + 100% chemical N, FPD), reduced chemical N by 50% (drip + 50% chemical N, OPTD) and CK treatment. The WHCNS-veg model was able to capture the above processes under different treatments. Annual N2O emissions were 5.47 and 3.76kg N ha−1 for the cucumber and tomato seasons under FP, respectively. Compared to FP, drip irrigation (FPD) decreased N2O emissions by 19.0% and 45.5% in the two seasons, respectively. Compared to FPD, applying a lower rate of N (OPTD) further reduced N2O emissions by 13.7% and 40.5%, respectively. According to the model simulation, N2O emission was mainly controlled by nitrification/denitrification in the cucumber/tomato seasons, respectively. Compared to FP, drip irrigation (FPD) increased NH3 volatilization by 54.2% in the cucumber season, while in the tomato season, there were no significant differences inNH3 volatilization under the three fertilizer treatments. The nitrate leaching levels were 48.5 and 81.0 kg N ha−1 for the two seasons under FP treatment. Drip irrigation (FPD) decreased NO3− leaching by 20.6% in the cucumber season. Drip irrigation (FPD) and/or reducing chemical N (OPTD) did not compromise vegetable yields. In all, WHCNS-veg performed well in simulating N2O, NH3 and NO3− dynamics from the greenhouse vegetable field, which means that the model can be used to manage water and nitrogen precisely in greenhouse vegetable production systems by scenario analysis, and drip irrigation and/or lower N input can be applied in this area to secure yield and reduce N losses. The present study investigates the response of natural gas consumption to temperature on the basis of observations during heating season (middle November–middle March) for the period 2002–2021 in Beijing, China, and then estimates temperature-related changes in the gas consumption under future scenarios by using climate model simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. Observational evidence suggests that the daily natural gas consumption normalized by gross domestic product is linearly correlated with the daily average temperature during heating season in the past two decades in Beijing. Hence, a linear regression model is built to estimate temperature-related changes in the natural gas consumption under future scenarios. Corresponding to a rising trend in the temperature, the natural gas consumption shows a decrease trend during 2015–2100 under both the SSP245 and the SSP585 scenarios. In particular, the temperature would increase rapidly from early 2040s to the end of 21st century under the SSP585 scenario, leading to an obvious reduction in the natural gas consumption for heating in Beijing. Relative to that in the present day (1995–2014), the natural gas consumption would show a reduction of approximately 9% (±4%) at the end of 21st century (2091–2100) under the SSP245 scenario and approximately 22% (±7%) under the SSP585 scenario. As one of the key technologies of HF communication, the maximum usable frequency (MUF) prediction method has been widely discussed. To experimentally confirm the reliability of commonly used MUFs prediction models for high-frequency communication, we have compared maximum observed frequencies (MOFs) and predicted MUFs to assess the accuracy of two typical prediction models. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and relative RMSE (RRMSE) between oblique sounding MOFs and the predicted MUFs were used to assess the model's accuracy. The oblique sounding path was from Changchun to Jinyang, and the vertical-sounding ionosonde was located in Beijing, which was approximately the midpoint of the oblique sounding circuit. The statistical analysis results show that: (a) the trend of prediction results from the Lockwood and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) model are in good agreement with the observations: the mean RMSE and RRMSE of the INGV model are less than those of the Lockwood model; (b) in the four different periods (sunrise, daytime, sunset, and nighttime) of the whole day, the maximum difference of RMSE between the Lockwood and INGV model is 0.14 MHz (the INGV performs better than the LWM), with the corresponding differences of RRMSE being 0.31% at sunrise and 0.68% at daytime; (c) in the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, the minimum RMSE values of the Lockwood and INGV models are 1.51 MHz and 1.37 MHz, respectively, which are obtained in winter, and the corresponding RRMSEs are 11.47% and 11.79%, respectively; (d) in the high and low solar activity epochs, the mean RMSEs of the Lockwood and INGV models are 1.63 MHz, and 1.54 MHz, with corresponding mean RRMSE values of 11.47% and 11.55%. (1) Background: To better carry out air pollution control and to assist in accurate investigations of air pollution, in this study, we fully explore the spatial distribution characteristics of air pollution complaint results and provide guidance for air pollution control by combining regional air monitoring data. (2) Methods: By selecting the air pollution complaint information in Beijing from 2019 to 2020, in this study, we extract the names and addresses of complaint points, as well as the complaint times and types by adopting the BERT (bidirectional encoder representations from transformers) + CRF (conditional random field) model deep learning method. Moreover, through further filtering and processing of the complaint points' address information, we achieve address matching and spatial positioning of the complaint points, and realize the regional spatial representation of air pollution complaints in Beijing in the form of a heat map. (3) Results: The experimental results are compared and analyzed with the ranking data of total suspended particulate (TSP) concentration of townships (streets) in Beijing during the same period, indicating that the key areas of air pollution complaints have a high correlation with the key polluted township (street) areas. The distribution of complaints and the types of complaints in each township (street) differ according to the population density in each township (street), the level of education, and economic activity. (4) Conclusions: The results of this study show that the public, as the intuitive perceiver of air pollution, is sensitive to the air pollution situation at a smaller spatial scale; furthermore, complaints can provide guidance and reference for the direction of air pollution control and law enforcement investigations when coupled with geographical features and economic status. Organic components in atmospheric fine particulate matter have attracted much attention and several scientific studies have been performed, although most of the sample extraction methods are time consuming and laborious. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) is a new sample extraction method offering number of advantages, such as low extraction cost, reduced solvent and time consumption, and simplified extraction protocols. In order to optimize ASE methods to determine the concentrations of organic compounds in atmospheric fine particulate matter, different parameters were set out for the experiment, and the optimal method was selected according to the recoveries of the standard (i.e., n−alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)). This study also involves a comparison of the optimal method with the traditional method of ultrasonic extraction (USE). In addition, the optimized method was applied to measure the mass concentrations of organic compounds (n−alkanes and PAHs) in fine particulate matter samples collected in Beijing. The findings showed that the average recovery of target compounds using ASE was 96%, with the majority of compounds falling within the confidence levels, and the ASE recoveries and precision were consistent with the USE method tested. Furthermore, ASE combines the advantages of high extraction efficiency, automation, and reduced solvent use. In conclusion, the optimal ASE methods can be used to extract organic components in atmospheric particulate matter and serve as a point of reference for the development of analytical methodologies for assessing organic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter in China. China has started to focus on the reduction in pollutants from diesel vehicles with high emission intensities in recent years. Therefore, it is essential and valuable to conduct a deep and detailed exploration of the reduction potential from diesel vehicles and compare the abatement effect from different control measures in upcoming decades. This study attempted to estimate the present emissions of four conventional pollutants from diesel vehicles by applying the Computer Program to Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) model, and to predict the future emission trends under different scenarios during 2019–2030, taking the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region as the case study area. In addition, we analyzed the emission reduction potential of diesel vehicles and compared the reduction effects from different control measures. The results showed that the CO and NOX emissions from diesel vehicles in this region could increase by 104.8% and 83.9%, respectively, given no any additional control measures adopted over the next decade. The largest emission reduction effect could be achieved under the comprehensive scenario, which means that vehicular diesel emissions in 2030 could decrease by 74.8–94.0% compared to values in 2018. The effect of emission reduction under the emission standards' upgrade scenario could cause a gradual increase and achieve a 19.8–82.6% reduction for the four pollutants in 2030. Furthermore, the new energy vehicle promotion scenario could achieve a considerable reduction effect. It could also offer better emission reduction effects under the highway to railway scenario for Tianjin and Hebei provinces. The old vehicle elimination scenario could have a considerable reduction effect, but only in the short term. Furthermore, emission reductions could be mainly influenced by heavy diesel trucks. The urbanization process leads to the enhancement of the urban heat island (UHI) effect, and the high temperature brought by it exacerbates the risk of heat exposure and seriously endangers human health. Analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics and levels of heat exposure risk is important for formulating heat risk prevention and control measures. Therefore, this study analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of heat exposure risk based on the UHI footprint (FP) and explores the relationship between it and urbanization factors in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region from 2000 to 2020, and obtains the following conclusions: (1) The BTH region suffers from severe UHI problems, with FP ranging from 6.05 km (Chengde) to 32.51 km (Beijing), and the majority of cities show significant trends of FP increase. (2) With the increase in FP, massive populations are exposed within the heat risk areas, with the average annual population at risk across cities ranging from 269,826 (Chengde) to 166,020,390 (Beijing), with a predominance of people exposed to high risk (more than 65% of the total) and generally showing increasing trends. (3) The population at risk of heat exposure is significantly correlated with urbanization factors, indicating that urbanization is an important reason for the increase in the risk population and the enhancement of the risk level. These results suggest that with the continuous urbanization process, the heat exposure risk problem faced by cities in the BTH region will persist and gradually worsen, which must be paid attention to and effective mitigation measures must be taken.
