During sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events, significant modifications occur, not only in the neutral atmosphere, but also in the ionosphere. Specifically, sporadic E layers in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere regions significantly disrupt satellite communication. Although research has frequently focused on ionospheric alterations during SSW events, detailed studies on sporadic E layers remain limited. Examining these variations during SSW events could enhance our understanding of the interaction mechanisms between the ionosphere and the neutral atmosphere, and provide insights into the patterns of sporadic E layer alterations. This study analyzed the behavior of sporadic E layers during the 2008/2009 winter SSW period using data from three Japanese stations and satellite observations. The principal findings included the following: (1) The enhancement in the critical frequency of the sporadic E layers was most notable following the transition from easterly to westerly winds at 60° N at a 10 hPa altitude, accompanied by quasi 6-day and quasi 16-day oscillations in frequency. (2) The daily average zonal and meridional wind speeds in the MLT region also exhibited quasi 6-day and quasi 16-day oscillations, aligning with the observed periodicities in the critical frequency of the sporadic E layers. (3) Planetary waves were shown to modulate the amplitude of diurnal and semidiurnal tides, influencing the sporadic E layers. Furthermore, a wavelet analysis of foEs data with a time resolution of 0.25 h demonstrated that planetary waves also modulate the frequency of diurnal tides, thereby affecting the sporadic E layers. A major challenge for climate system models in simulating the impacts of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the interannual variations of East Asian rainfall anomalies is the wide inter-model spread of outputs, which causes considerable uncertainty in physical mechanism understanding and short-term climate prediction. This study investigates the fidelity of 40 models from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) in representing the impacts of ENSO on South China Spring Rainfall (SCSR) during the ENSO decaying spring. The response of SCSR to ENSO, as well as the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO), is quite different among the models; some models even simulate opposite SCSR anomalies compared to the observations. However, the models capturing the ENSO-related warm SSTAs over TIO tend to simulate a better SCSR-ENSO relationship, which is much closer to observation. Therefore, models are grouped based on the simulated TIO SSTAs to explore the modulating processes of the TIO SSTAs in ENSO affecting SCSR anomalies. Comparing analysis suggests that the warm TIO SSTA can force the equatorial north–south antisymmetric circulation in the lower troposphere, which is conducive to the westward extension and maintenance of the western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC). In addition, the TIO SSTA enhances the upper tropospheric East Asian subtropical westerly jet, leading to anomalous divergence over South China. Thus, the westward extension and strengthening of WNPAC can transport sufficient water vapor for South China, which is associated with the ascending motion caused by the upper tropospheric divergence, leading to the abnormal SCSR. Using multi-source observation data including automatic stations, radar, satellite, new detection equipment, and the Fifth Generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis (ERA-5) data, along with the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) platform, an analysis was conducted on a rainstorm process that occurred in Nanjing on 15 June 2020, with the aim of providing reference for future urban flood control planning and heavy rainfall forecasting and early warning. The results showed that this rainstorm process was generated under the background of an eastward-moving northeast cold vortex and a southward retreat of the Western Pacific Subtropical High. Intense precipitation occurred near the region of large top brightness temperature (TBB) gradient values or the center of low TBB values on the northern side of the convective cloud cluster. During the heavy precipitation period, the differential propagation phase shift rate (KDP), differential reflectivity factor (ZDR), and zero-lag correlation coefficient (ρHV) detected by the S-band dual-polarization radar all increased significantly. The vertical structure of the wind field detected by the wind profile radar provided a good indication of changes in precipitation intensity, showing a strong correspondence between the timing of maximum precipitation and the intrusion of upper-level cold air. The abrupt increase in the integrated liquid water content observed by the microwave radiometer can serve as an important indicator of the onset of stronger precipitation. During the Meiyu season in Nanjing, convective precipitation was mainly composed of small to medium raindrops with diameters less than 3 mm, with falling velocities of raindrops mainly clustering between 2 and 6 m·s−1. The rainstorm process featured four water vapor transport channels: the mid-latitude westerly channel, the Indian Ocean channel, the South China Sea channel, and the Pacific Ocean channel. During heavy rainfall, the Pacific Ocean water vapor channel was the main channel at the middle and lower levels, while the South China Sea water vapor channel was the main channel at the upper level, both accounting for a trajectory proportion of 34.2%. The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR) frequently experience extreme precipitation events (EPEs) during June and July, the so-called Meiyu season. This study investigated EPEs in the MLYR during Meiyu seasons over 1961–2022, using rain gauge observations and ERA5 reanalysis data. EPEs associated with the Northeast China cold vortex featured more undulating westerlies with a distinct wave train pattern from Europe to Northeast Asia. Due to robust Rossby wave energy, the trough deepened from Northeast China towards the MLYR and was confronted with a westward extension of the western Pacific subtropical high. Such a configuration enhanced the warm and moist monsoon conveyor belt and convergence of water vapor flux from southwestern China to the MLYR. The warm and moist air favored upward motion. The increased rainfall prevailed from southwestern China to the MLYR. In contrast, ordinary EPEs were characterized by zonal westerlies and weaker Rossby wave propagation. The Meiyu trough was comparatively shallow and confined to the MLYR with less westward expansion of the subtropical high. Every year, large quantities of dust are transported from North Africa to the Americas, Europe, and West Asia. The purpose of this study is to analyze four intense and pervasive dust storms that entered the Middle East from Northern Africa. Satellite products, ground-based remote sensing measurements, reanalysis data, and the outputs of the Aire Limitée Adaptation dynamique Développement InterNational-Dust (ALADIN-Dust) and the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic weather and climate model with Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases (ICON-ART) forecasting models were synergized. The dust storms originated from different source regions located in the north, northeastern, and central parts of the Sahara Desert. The transport height of the main dust plumes was about 3–5 km, triggered by the westerly zonal winds. The presence of a closed low over the Eastern Mediterranean and the penetration of a deep trough into North Africa at 500 hPa were the main synoptic circulation patterns favoring long-range dust transport during the four dust events. A comparison of aerosol optical depth (AOD) outputs from the two models with satellite data revealed that although both models forecasted dust transport from Africa to the Middle East, they considerably underestimated the AOD values, especially near the dust sources. The ICON-ART model performed slightly better than ALADIN in forecasting these dust storms, and for longer forecasting leading time, although the performance of both models decreased, the superiority of the ICON-ART model became more apparent. Heavy rainfall due to tropical cyclones (TCs) in the North Indian Ocean (NIO) adversely impacts nations frequently. Though extensive research has focused on TCs in the NIO, less attention has been given to the connection between TCs and extreme events in Sri Lanka. This study examined atmospheric characteristics during sixteen extreme events, focusing on linkages between TCs, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and mechanisms behind heavy rainfall associated with TCs over Sri Lanka. The results showed that in the pre-monsoon period, TCs move northward with high water vapor (WV) content accumulated in the Southern Hemisphere. This main WV flow over the equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) is connected with TCs, causing considerable damage in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka. During negative IOD years, strong westerly winds create cyclonic circulations on either side of the equator. Conversely, during the post-monsoon period, the IOD phase has no significant effect. TCs generally followed westward tracks, supported by winds from the Northern Hemisphere, and caused heavy rainfall in the Eastern, Northern, and Northcentral provinces in Sri Lanka. These TCs are isolated from the main WV flow over EIO. Such observed common characteristics during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons are key factors contributing to extreme rainfall in Sri Lanka. The westerly circulation and the monsoon circulation are the two major atmospheric circulation systems affecting the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH), which have significant impacts on climate and environmental changes in the middle latitudes. However, until now, people's understanding of the long-term paleoenvironmental changes in the westerly- and monsoon-controlled areas in China's middle latitudes is not uniform, and the phase relationship between the two at different time scales is also controversial, especially the exception to the "dry gets drier, wet gets wetter" paradigm in global warming between the two. Based on the existing literature data published, integrated paleoenvironmental records, and comprehensive simulation results in recent years, this study systematically reviews the climate and environmental changes in the two major circulation regions in the mid-latitudes of China since the Middle Pleistocene, with a focus on exploring the phase relationship between the two systems at different time scales and its influencing mechanism. Through the reanalysis and comparative analysis of the existing data, we conclude that the interaction and relationship between the two circulation systems are relatively strong and close during the warm periods, but relatively weak during the cold periods. From the perspective of orbital, suborbital, and millennium time scales, the phase relationship between the westerly and Asian summer monsoon (ASM) circulations shows roughly in-phase, out-of-phase, and anti-phase transitions, respectively. There are significant differences between the impacts of the westerly and ASM circulations on the middle-latitude regions of northwest China, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, and eastern China. However, under the combined influence of varied environmental factors such as BHLSR (boreal high-latitude solar radiation), SST (sea surface temperature), AMOC (north Atlantic meridional overturning circulation), NHI (Northern Hemisphere ice volume), NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation), ITCZ (intertropical convergence zone), WPSH (western Pacific subtropical high), TIOA (tropical Indian Ocean anomaly), ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation), CGT/SRP (global teleconnection/Silk Road pattern), etc., there is a complex and close coupling relationship between the two, and it is necessary to comprehensively consider their "multi-factor's joint-action" mechanism and impact, while, in general, the dynamic mechanisms driving the changes of the westerly and ASM circulations are not the same at different time scales, such as orbital, suborbital, centennial to millennium, and decadal to interannual, which also leads to the formation of different types of phase relationships between the two at different time scales. Future studies need to focus on the impact of this "multi-factor linkage mechanism" and "multi-phase relationship" in distinguishing the interaction between the westerly and ASM circulation systems in terms of orbital, suborbital, millennium, and sub-millennium time scales. Several investigations have proven the existence of monsoons in Indonesia. However, this has received little attention due to the scientific argument that the region of 10° N–10° S is not monsoonal because it receives precipitation all year round. This study used space–time SVD analysis of atmospheric and oceanic field data for 30 years (1990–2020) to detect monsoon signals and related features. The single-field SVD analysis of rainfall revealed that the first mode accounts for only 33% of the total variance, suggesting it is highly variable. Both the PC space and time series show the well-known monsoon pattern. Further, the Indonesian monsoon regimes and phases are defined based on the revealed rainfall features. The wet season lasts from November to April, accounting for more than 77% of annual precipitation. The coupled-field SVD analyses show that Indonesian monsoon rainfall strongly correlates with local SST (PC1 accounts for 70.4%), and the pattern is associated with the Asian winter monsoon. The heterogonous vector correlation map analysis revealed that the related features during the monsoon, including the strengthening and weakening of subtropical anticyclones, the intertwining of westerly wind in the Indian Ocean, and variations in the north–south dipole structure of the ocean temperature, are linked to variations in Indonesia's monsoon rainfall. This study investigated the relationship between the summer Arctic Dipole (AD) anomaly and the climatic variability in Eurasia during the period 1979–2021. It was found that the summer AD anomaly experienced a phase shift from frequent negative phases before 2006 to positive phases after 2007, as manifested by the shift of the center of the positive (negative) AD anomaly to Greenland (in the Laptev Sea and East Siberian Seas) in the more recent period (2007–2021) from the vicinity of the Kara Sea and Laptev Sea (the Canadian archipelago) in the earlier period (1979–2006). Before the mid-2000s, a wave train was shown in the middle troposphere of Eurasia, and this teleconnection pattern of atmospheric circulation could have resulted in local warm and wet (cool and dry) anomalies over northern Russia and East Asia (Western Europe and the Far east). Since the mid-2000s, the wave train has experienced a notable adjustment that was conducive to East Asian and Arctic cooling, displaying anticyclonic anomalies around northern Eurasia and two cyclonic anomalies centered near the Arctic and East Asia. The presence of a cold Arctic anomaly was found to enhance westerly winds at high latitudes by modulating the meridional temperature gradient (MTG) and impeding the southward propagation of cold Arctic air. Additionally, the warmth of northern Eurasia may have also resulted in a reduction in the MTG between northern Eurasia and the mid-lower latitudes, favoring a weakening of zonal winds over the central region of Eurasia. The study explores the characteristics of morning extreme precipitation (MEP) during the pre-summer in inland Guangdong. Based on the principal modes, MEP events can be classified into four groups. The first group of MEP (G1) is a typical southeastward-propagating rainfall system originating from the northwestern mountains. This is caused by the strongest accelerated southwesterly winds at night, which bring abundant moist and warm air from the South China Sea (SCS) along with the shear line and the highest convective available potential energy (CAPE). The second group of MEP (G2) is warm-sector heavy rainfall with large-scale warming and higher CAPE. This local rainfall system originates in the south of Nanling mountains at night and reaches its mature stage in the morning. The rainfall system of the third group (G3) originates in central Guangxi and propagates to the southern inland region. The southeasterly winds in Guangxi intensify at night due to the anomalous cyclonic circulation. However, in the morning, the easterly winds shift to the westerlies, favoring eastward propagation. After SCS monsoon onset, cold air intrudes southward, colliding with moist warm air from the SCS, leading to heavy frontal precipitation in the inland region, classified as the fourth group MEP (G4). Influences of animals, time of day, air temperature and relative humidity, wind speed and direction on ammonia concentrations were investigated. A case study on a typical summer day from 7:00 to approximately 24:00 CEST (moderate wind speed, variable cloudiness and maximum global radiation higher than 950 W/m2) in west–central Poland is presented. Concentrations of this gas were measured at four heights (0.1–1.5 m), which were changed every 5 min, using a Nitrolux 1000 photoacoustic spectrometer. A micrometeorological station was established to also measure the surface energy budget components. The results presented are the average for each hour and for the entire day. The fine structure of concentration profiles, plume detection and uncertainty of ammonia flux calculation are also presented. The highest NH3 concentrations were at a 0.5 m height between 16:00 and 17:00 h when cows were grazing, but the lowest concentrations were between 23:00 and 24:00 h at the height of 1.5 m. The ammonia concentration increased with increasing air temperature and was the highest with a westerly wind direction and decreased with increasing air relative humidity. The greatest influence on the ammonia concentration was related to the presence of cows and the time of day, while a slightly smaller influence was noted in terms of air temperature and wind direction. A case study is suitable for presenting local effects, inhomogeneities and quantifying uncertainties in the bidirectional ammonia flux calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) derived from the Fengyun-4 meteorological satellite (FY-4), in this paper, integrated multi-satellite retrievals for GPM precipitation and reanalysis datasets and the vertical distribution characteristics of FY-4 AMVs, their application in the identification of the South Asian high (SAH) anticyclone and their application in the real-time monitoring of rainstorm disasters are studied. The results show that the AMVs' vertical distribution characteristics are different across regions and seasons. AMVs from 150 to 350 hPa can be chosen as the upper troposphere wind (the total number accounts for about 77.2% on average). The center and shape of the upper tropospheric anticyclone obtained from AMVs are close to or slightly southward compared with those of the SAH at 200 hPa obtained from the ERA5 geopotential height. The SAH ridge line identified using the upper troposphere AMV zonal wind (the zonal wind is equal to zero) is slightly southward by about 1–2 degrees of latitude from that identified using ERA5 at 200 hPa but with a similar seasonal advance. The upper troposphere AMV can be used to monitor the location of the SAH and the evolution of its ridge line. The abnormally strong precipitation in South China is related to the location of the SAH and its ridge line. When the precipitation is abnormally strong/weak, the upper troposphere AMV deviation airflow shows divergence/convergence. During the "Dragon Boat Water" period in South China in 2022, strong precipitation occurred in the strong westerly winds or divergent flow on the northeast side of the upper troposphere anticyclone obtained from AMVs, and the precipitation intensity was the strongest when the divergence reached its peak, but this is not shown clearly in the EAR5 dataset. Atmospheric vortex streets (AVSs) are often observed in the wake of the leeward side of mountainous islands and are considered atmospheric analogs of the classic Kármán vortex street when a fluid flows past a cylindrical obstacle. The prevailing westerlies were observed year-round around the Tibetan Plateau. However, it remains to be understood whether the wake on the leeward side of the Tibetan Plateau exhibits a stable AVS and how the AVS impacts precipitation over the downstream region. In this study, the environmental meteorological factors, spatiotemporal characteristics, and various properties of the AVS on the leeward side of the Tibetan Plateau were examined for the period of 1979–2018 using global reanalysis datasets. The results show that the spatial structure of these AVSs closely resembles that of the classic Kármán vortex street observed in the laboratory. The meteorological factors satisfy the conditions in which a stable AVS can exist year-round. Moreover, various properties of these AVSs, including the aspect ratio and Strouhal number, are similar to those in previous studies of smaller obstacle caused AVS. Thus, these AVSs on the leeward side of the Tibetan Plateau can be interpreted as the atmospheric analog of classic Kármán vortex streets. The results further show that the spatiotemporal structure of precipitation over the wake of the Tibetan Plateau was largely shared by the cyclonic activities in the AVS. Approximately 80–90% of the total precipitation and heavy rain days in the main rainband over the wake of the Tibetan Plateau are closely tied to the seasonal evolution of the AVS. The spring sensible heating (SSH) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which can significantly affect the precipitation in China, has experienced three different stages of change, showing significant increasing (1961–1979, Stage I), decreasing (1980–2002, Stage II), and increasing (2003–2014, Stage III) trends. In this study, the impact of these different trends in TP SSH on spring precipitation (SPR) in China and their possible mechanisms are investigated, based on observations and the reanalysis product. In Stage I, the SPR represents a contrasting north-south pattern associated with the increasing TP SSH, showing increasing trends over southern China and decreasing trends over central and northern China. Further, the spatial distribution of SPR trends shows a contrasting east-west pattern in Stage II. That is, persistent weakening TP SSH plays a more crucial role in increasing and decreasing SPR over southwestern and southern China, respectively. However, compared with the significant trend in SPR in Stage III, the regulation of TP SSH on SPR weakens significantly. Dynamically, the increasing TP SSH in Stage I can strengthen the subtropical westerly jet in the upper layer, simultaneously configured with an anomalous cyclone in northeastern China, which deepens the East Asian trough. Thus, anomalous convergence in the upper layer occurs over central and northern China, favoring the downdraft. It then causes more cold and dry air to move southward in the lower troposphere, which then encounters the warm and wet southwest airflows, boosting the updraft over southern China. In Stage II, regression analysis shows that if the TP SSH increases, an anomalous cyclone in the middle and upper troposphere occurs over the western TP, causing the downdraft and less precipitation over southwestern China, while a cyclone in the lower troposphere occurs over the western North Pacific and extends to southern China, promoting the ascending motions and more precipitation in southern China. Clues of climate change on the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period (40 ka) are important for revealing the mechanism of desertification of middle-latitude deserts in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Studies are still rare for the understanding of the specific relationship of climate changes between the Alashan Plateau and the global. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of the existing research in China and the international academic community, this paper reviews the environmental evolution history of the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period from the records of paleo-environment and geomorphological characteristics in different deserts of the plateau (e.g., Badanjilin, Tenggeli, and Wulanbuhe). From about 40 ka to the end of the last glacial maximum, the climate on the plateau was wetter than it is today, and to the end of the Pleistocene, the climate was generally dry and the aeolian activities were enhanced. However, the climate was arid during the whole last glacial period in the Wulanbuhe Desert, evidently different from the overall pattern of the plateau. The Tenggeli Desert was characterized by an arid climate in the early Holocene. The most controversial events for the Alashan Plateau are the drought events in the middle Holocene in the Badanjilin Desert. The role and impact of the westerlies and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) systems on the climate change of the desert and even the whole plateau is a vexed question that brings different views in different periods. There is still a lack of definite evidence representing the events of global environmental change that occurred on the plateau during the discussed period. The distinctive morphology of dune mountains and the distribution of sand dunes are mutually indicative of the direction and energy of wind systems on the plateau. It is suggested that appropriate wind energy is the significant key to the desertification in these middle-latitude deserts on the plateau. From a global-scale review of climate change, the desertification of the modern-scale sandy desert landscapes on the Alashan Plateau is generally related to the global glacial period and the cold and dry climate during the past 40 ka. Based on the hourly monitoring data including meteorological elements and PM2.5 mass concentration in Yancheng from 2017 to 2021, PM2.5 mass concentration variations, influencing factors and source apportionment were studied by the Kolmogorov–Zurbenko filter and Potential Source Contribution Function Analysis (PSCF) method. The results showed that the mass concentration of PM2.5 in Yancheng showed a decreasing trend from 2017 to 2021, with a decline rate of about 33.8% (2017, 44.79 ± 31.22 μg/m3; 2021, 29.66 ± 21.69 μg/m3); the visibility increased by 18.4% (2017, 11.69 ± 6.46 km; 2021,13.8 ± 6.24 km), which is mainly related to emission reduction measures in China. The mass concentration of PM2.5 has significant seasonal variation characteristics, with the highest in winter, reaching 60.61 μg/m3, and the lowest in summer, only 23.11 μg/m3. The diurnal variation of PM2.5 showed a unimodal distribution, and concentration difference is obvious under the influence of land–sea breeze (36.60 μg/m3, easterly wind; 43.57 μg/m3, westerly wind). Meteorological factors have an important impact on the mass concentration of PM2.5, which fluctuates with seasons. It is calculated to have a good fitting relationship between the visibility and PM2.5 concentration, and the correlation decreases with the increase in humidity (−0.71 ~ −0.41). The relatively clean atmosphere under high humidity conditions is also prone to the obstruction to vision. The corresponding PM2.5 concentration varies significantly under different wind directions and wind speeds in Yancheng, and high values mainly come from the northwest–southeast–southwest direction. The potential source regions in autumn are mainly distributed in southwestern Jiangsu and northwestern Zhejiang; the potential source regions in winter are mainly located in southwestern Jiangsu, southern Anhui and northern Jiangxi. The westerlies play an important role in driving climate change in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, little is known about the history of the westerlies in the TP owing to limited observations and a lack of robust reconstructions. The widely distributed eolian loess in the eastern TP is one of the ideal materials to retrieve the intensity history for the westerlies. A detailed grain-size and endmember model analysis (EMMA) on the Ganzi loess sequence located in the eastern TP revealed that the EMMA decomposed the loess grain-size components into four endmembers: EM1 (modal size 1.42 μm) is related to pedogenesis, and EM2 (modal size 7.10 μm) is transported by the westerlies. Silt modes (EM3 and EM4) are transported by the TP winter monsoon or near-surface airflows. The mass accumulation rate (MAR) of EM2 indicated the westerly variations. Combined with the MAR, we reconstructed the history of westerly intensity since the last interglacial period from the Ganzi loess sequence. We found that the intensity of the westerlies showed typical glacial/interglacial variations since the last interglacial period in the eastern TP. The westerly intensity was strong with large fluctuations during the glacial period, whereas it was weak and stable during the Holocene and the last interglacial. The temperature gradient between high and low latitudes caused by changes in insolation and ice volume in the northern hemisphere were the dominant forcing mechanisms for the westerly intensity variations. The objective of this study is to investigate and understand the changes in thermal contrast in the upper troposphere over Central Asia before and after 1999. It was observed that there was a discernible increase/decrease in upper tropospheric temperature (TT) in the 100 hPa/250 hPa over the Central Asian region during PRE99, whereas during POST99, it was found to be the other way around. A clear increase and decrease in the upper TT pattern in 100 hPa and 250 hPa can be attributed to anti-cyclonic and cyclonic circulations in the wind shear, respectively. The subtropical jet has been shown to act as a significant dynamical system generating cyclonic circulation over Central Asia, resulting in dynamical features favorable for enhancing convection during PRE99. This is evinced by the structure of the 200 hPa zonal winds, which serve as a surrogate for a subtropical jet. It can be seen that the westerly winds over the southern part and the easterly winds over the northern part of Central Asia culminate in a significant cyclonic circulation over the region. In summary, PRE99 showed an increase in convection over Central Asia and the regions to its west. The anatomy, using geopotential height, relative humidity, total cloud area (TCA) fraction, longwave fluxes (LWF), and shortwave fluxes (SWF) through the top of the atmosphere, is consistent with the above results. To further support these findings, an updated and thorough causality analysis is performed, and it is noteworthy to mention that the variation of thermal temperature contrast is found to be causally related to LWF and SWF. The Antarctic sea ice has undergone dramatic changes in recent years, with the highest recorded sea ice extent in 2014 and the lowest in 2017. We investigated the impacts of the observed changes in these two extremes of Antarctic sea ice conditions on the atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere. We conducted three numerical simulations with different seasonal cycles of Antarctic sea ice forcings using the Community Atmosphere Model Version 5: the maximum sea ice extent in 2014 (ICE_14), the minimum sea ice extent in 2017 (ICE_17), and the average sea ice extent between 1981 and 2010 (ICE_clm, reference simulation). Our results suggest that the atmospheric response in the Southern Hemisphere showed strong seasonal variations and the atmospheric circulation in winter was more sensitive to the decreased Antarctic sea ice in 2017 than the increased sea ice in 2014. In ICE_14, the westerlies over the polar region were enhanced in summer, but there was no significant change in the zonal-averaged wind in winter. In contrast, in ICE_17, there was a clear equatorward shift in the subtropical jet in winter, but no significant change in summer. The temperature responses were limited to the Antarctic coast, where there were changes in the sea ice in ICE_14 and ICE_17. Water vapor transport plays a significant role in maintaining the water cycle over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). This study investigates the characteristics of water vapor transport across the TP southern boundaries and its impacts on TP precipitation during the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) season from 2000 to 2019. The southern boundary is subdivided into four sub-boundaries from the east to the west: boundaries 7 (100°–95° E), 8 (95°–89° E), 9 (89°–80° E), and 10 (80°–70° E) (B7, B8, B9, and B10). ISM can affect the water vapor transports of B7, B8, and B9, while mid-latitude westerlies dominate the water vapor transport of B10. An area with concentrated spatial precipitation in both strong and weak ISM months is regarded as a precipitation concentration region (PCR). The results show that the PCR precipitation is smaller in the weak ISM month than in the normal month for most of the day, while it is larger in the strong ISM month than in the normal month. The PCR precipitation difference from afternoon to evening in strong and weak ISM months between normal months shows a dependency on the water vapor transport of B8 and B10. Water vapor transported across B9 also contributes to the increased PCR precipitation in the afternoon. The PCR precipitation shows a more dependable relationship to the water vapor from the BoB and the Arabian Sea in strong ISM months than in weak ISM months. Conversely, the water vapor transport efficiency is low in strong ISM months due to a cyclonic circulation over northern India, preventing water vapor transport from reaching the TP directly. Located in the interior of Eurasia, the Mongolian Plateau (MP) is extremely sensitive to global warming and become a critical area for studying precipitation patterns. Based on the monthly data of 135 meteorological stations during 1976–2017, we analyze the spatiotemporal change in precipitation and discuss its response to atmospheric circulation. The results show that: (1) Precipitation shows increasing trends in spring, autumn, and winter, but a decreasing trend at a rate of 5.3 mm/decade in summer. The annual precipitation also shows an overall slight decreasing trend. (2) The spatial distribution is uneven, the annual precipitation in the northern Great Khingan Mountains is more, but it gradually decreases at the rate of 10–30 mm/decade, showing a trend of "wet gets dry"; while there is less in the southwest Gobi Desert region, but it gradually increases with the rate of 10–20 mm/decade, showing a trend of "dry gets wet". (3) Over decades, the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and westerly circulation show a seesaw change in MP. Affected by the weakening of the EASM, the area of arid regions has gradually expanded. The results also demonstrate that the EASM has a higher impact on the annual precipitation change pattern, particularly in the southeastern MP. The conclusion indicated that the variation in the position and orientation between EASM and the westerly circulation may be an explanation for the spatiotemporal precipitation pattern, providing a new viewpoint to the question of circulation mechanisms behind climate change in MP in recent 40 years. The northern coast of Alaska is experiencing significant climatic change enhancing hazards from reduced sea ice and increased coastal erosion. This same region is home to offshore oil/gas activities. Foggy Island Bay is one region along the Beaufort Sea coast with planned offshore oil/gas development that will need to account for the changing climate. High water levels impact infrastructure through coastal erosion and flooding hazards. In this study, 21 high water level events exceeding the top 95th percentile were identified at the gauge in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (adjacent to Foggy Island Bay) over 1990–2018. All 21 events, and many non-extreme days with elevated water levels, were associated with strong westerly winds according to station records. Storm systems were generally found to be a key driver of westerly winds in the region according to downscaled reanalysis and storm track data. A dynamically downscaled global climate model projection from CMIP5 indicated that days with westerly wind events may become more frequent as storms strengthen and have longer durations by 2100 in the Foggy Island Bay region. Coupled with the anticipated continued decline in sea ice, the northern coast of Alaska may experience more frequent high water events over the next ~80 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The loess in the arid area of Xinjiang is located at the eastern end of the Central Asia Loess Belt, and paleoclimate research about it is of great importance for understanding the mechanism of interaction of the Eurasian Westerly monsoon system and the aridity of Central Asia. This review focuses on recent progress concerning the spatial distribution, material composition and provenance of loess in Xinjiang and points out the shortcomings of and challenges to provenance and dust circulation. Field investigation and previous studies indicate that loess sediments have been mainly distributed on the river terraces and windward piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains and the Kunlun Mountains since the late Pliocene (mainly late Pleistocene). Grain size and age data show that Xinjiang loess deposits at some locations are rapid and discontinuous or sedimentary hiatus. The Siberian High system largely controlled dust mobilization and loess accumulation in northern Xinjiang but not southern Xinjiang. In southern Central Asia, the intensity of dust activity may be determined by the Caspian Sea–Hindu Kush Index (CasHKI) and local circulation. However, there is not enough evidence that the CasHKI index can affect the Tarim Basin area. Consequently, ascertaining the driving mechanism of mid-latitude Westerly winds and the dynamic process of loess deposition in Xinjiang is a specific suggestion for critical future research. Many indicators have shown that the loess dust sources in Xinjiang are composed of mainly proximal materials plus some remote materials. Alluvial plains and local proluvial fans contributed more to loess deposition, while Central Asian deserts comprise a small proportion of loess deposition in northern Xinjiang. In future provenance research, new technologies and new methods should be continuously tested to facilitate an objective understanding of the provenance of the loess in Xinjiang. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and is characterized by significant intra-annual variation, with higher water levels and area in the wet season compared to the dry season. However, the effects of the seasonal variation in Poyang Lake on the local weather are still not well-recognized. With the help of the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model, we designed one control experiment (CTL) using the default Poyang Lake level and area data and two sensitivity experiments, EXPT1 and EXPT2, the former representing the higher lake level and the greater area of Poyang Lake in the wet season and the latter representing the lower lake level and the smaller area of Poyang Lake in the dry season, to assess how these changes affect the local weather. The results of EXPT1 show that, as the lake's level and area increase, the latent heat flux (LH), the sensible heat flux (SH), and the land surface temperature (LST) in the lake area decrease compared to those of the CTL. Meanwhile, the planetary boundary layer height (PBL), the convective available potential energy (CAPE), the wind speed, and the vapor flux over the lake decrease as well, indicating increased atmospheric stratification stability and resulting in a domain-averaged decline in precipitation of −22.3 mm. However, the low lake level and less area in EXPT2 show increasing SH, LST, PBL, and wind speed, and decreasing LH and CAPE compared to those of the CTL. The increasing SH and weakened atmospheric stratification stability in EXPT2 cause a significantly higher wind speed over the eastern part of the lake. As a result, more water vapor is transported to the east side of the lake by westerly upper winds, leading to a decreasing precipitation on the western side of the lake and a slightly increasing precipitation on the eastern side, resulting ultimately in a domain-averaged decline in precipitation of −23.8 mm in the simulation of the low level and less area of Poyang Lake. Although the LH and CAPE decline both in EXPT1 and EXPT2, the main cause is the higher water thermal capacity and lower lake-surface temperature with more lake water for EXPT1 and the lower evaporation with less lake water for EXPT2. Overall, a deeper and larger Poyang Lake will reduce the local temperature, inhibit water evaporation from the lake surface, and make the near-surface atmosphere more stable, resulting in restrained local precipitation. A shrinking lake level and area will raise the local temperature and the instability of the near-surface atmosphere but reduce water vapor and enlarge local wind and circulation, resulting in declining precipitation and a changing fall zone. Using global ocean vertical temperature anomaly data, we identified that a significant response of the sea temperature anomaly (STA) to the solar radio flux (SRF) exists. We found that the STA exhibited a significant correlation with Asian summer and winter precipitation, among which the response from the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (the QTP) was particularly noticeable. Based on NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, the latent heat flux (LHF) anomaly, which plays a key role in winter precipitation in China, especially over the QTP, showed a significant response to the SRF in the Pacific. The results demonstrated the bottom-up mechanism of impact of solar activity (SA) on the plateau snow through sea–air interaction. Meanwhile, a top-down mechanism was also present. When the SRF was high, the stratospheric temperature in the low and mid-latitudes increased and the temperature gradient pointed to the pole to strengthen the westerly wind in the mid-latitudes. The EP flux showed that atmospheric long waves in the high altitudes propagated downward from the stratosphere to the troposphere. A westerly (easterly) wind anomaly occurred in the south (north) of the QTP at 500 hPa and the snowfall rate over the QTP tended to increase. When the SRF was low, the situation was the opposite, and the snowfall rate tended to decrease. The model results confirmed that when total solar irradiance (TSI) became stronger (weaker), both of the solar radiation fluxes at the top of the atmosphere and the surface temperature over the QTP increased (decreased), the vertical updraft intensified (weakened), and the snowfall rate tended to increase (decrease) accordingly. The concentration of ice nucleating particles (INPs) in the cloud layer affects cloud processes more importantly than at the ground level. To make up for deficiencies in the observation of the vertical distribution of INPs over different background regions of China, airborne sampling of INPs was carried out at the altitudes of 2000–5500 m over Turpan, Xinjiang, northwest China on 29 December 2019, and the samples were analyzed in a static vacuum water vapor diffusion chamber. The sources and relationships of the INPs with meteorological conditions and the variation of the concentrations of aerosol particles of different sizes were explored. The results indicate that the concentration of INPs varies from 0.25 to 15.7 L − 1 when the nucleation temperature changes from −17 to −26 °C and the relative humidity with respect to water (RH w ) varies from 95 to 105%. The existence of an inversion layer near the planetary boundary layer (PBL) inhibits the vertical transport of aerosols, thus affecting the vertical distribution of INP concentration. INPs in the free atmosphere mainly originate from fine-mode aerosol particles transported from long distances by westerly winds and do not change significantly with height. The air mass in the PBL is short-range transported, and the INP concentration reaches 15.7 L − 1 at T =−26 °C and RH w = 105%, which is obviously higher than that above the PBL. In this study, we show that changes in the 250 hPa vorticity cut-off low (COL) activity may possibly be driven by sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the tropical Pacific. Using ERA5 reanalysis, the existence of different large-scale circulation patterns is identified that work to enhance the COL activity with a weakened jet stream, while COLs are suppressed with strengthened westerlies. The present-day simulations of AMIP-CMIP6 models reproduce realistic features of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)–COL teleconnection, but biases exist, especially in coupled models. The differences are a priori due to the inability of the models to accurately predict the time-mean zonal flow, which may be in part due to systematic biases in the predicted SST. The underestimation of warm SST anomalies over the eastern Pacific is a common problem in CMIP3 and CMIP5 models and remains a major uncertainty in CMIP6. We find that a reduced bias in the predicted SST by coupled models is most likely to produce more skillful simulations in the Southern Hemisphere, but the same evidence does not hold for the Northern Hemisphere. The ENSO impact on winter precipitation in the Southeast United States was analyzed from the perspective of daily weather types (WTs). We calculated the dynamic contribution associated with the change in frequency of the WTs and the thermodynamic contribution due to changes in the spatial patterns of the environmental fields of the WTs. Six WTs were obtained using a k-means clustering analysis of 850 hPa winds in reanalysis data from November to February of 1948–2022. All the WTs can only persist for a few days. The most frequent winter weather type is WT1 (shallow trough in Eastern U.S.), which can persist or likely transfer to WT4 (Mississippi River Valley ridge). WT1 becomes less frequent in El Niño years, while the frequency of WT4 does not change much. WTs 2–6 correspond to a loop of eastward propagating waves with troughs and ridges in the mid-latitude westerlies. Three WTs with a deep trough in the Southeast U.S., which are WT2 (east coast trough), WT3 (off east coast trough) and WT6 (plains trough), become more frequent in El Niño years. The more frequent deep troughs (WTs 2, 3 and 6) and less frequent shallow trough (WT1) result in above-normal precipitation in the coastal Southeast U.S. in the winter of El Niño years. WT5 (off coast Carolina High), with maximum precipitation extending from Mississippi Valley to the Great Lakes, becomes less frequent in El Niño years, which corresponds to the below-normal precipitation from the Great Lakes to Upper Mississippi and Ohio River Valley in El Niño years, and vice versa in La Niña years. PM2.5 and PM10 in the atmosphere seriously affect human health and air quality, a situation which has aroused widespread concern. In this paper, we analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from 2016 to 2021 based on real-time monitoring data. In addition, we also explore the influence of meteorological conditions on pollutants. The results show that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are similarly distribution in temporal and spatial from 2016 to 2021, and the average concentrations of both show a decreasing trend. The ratio of PM2.5 to PM10 is decreasing, indicating that the proportion of fine particles is declining. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are higher in spring and winter, but lower in summer. Spatially, it shows a gradual shift from the characteristic of "high in the south and low in the north" to a uniform homogenization across districts. The spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations is synchronous by applying empirical orthogonal functions (EOF). The first EOF pattern exhibits a consistent characteristic of high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The second pattern EOF reflects the effect of impairing PM2.5 concentrations in the southeast during the winter of 2016–2018. The PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are significantly negatively correlated with wind speed and precipitation in both spring and winter. On the other hand, from the perspective of the circulation situation, the southeasterly and weak westerly wind in spring produce convergence resulting in higher particulate matter concentrations in the south than in the north in Beijing. The westerly wind is flatter at 700 hPa geopotential height, which is conducive to the formation of stationary weather. The vertical direction of airflow in spring and winter is dominated by convergence and sinking, indicating the weak dispersion ability of the atmosphere. The reason for the accumulation of particulate matter at the surface is investigated, which is beneficial to provide the theoretical basis for air quality management and pollution control in Beijing. Unusually long duration and heavy rainfall from 5 to 6 February 2021 caused widespread and devastating floods in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The heavy rainfall was produced by two mesoscale convective systems (MCSs). The first MCS developed at 13Z on 5 February 2021 over the southern coast of Sumatra and propagated towards Semarang. The second MCS developed over the north coast of Semarang at 18Z on 5 February 2021 and later led to the first peak of precipitation at 21Z on 5 February 2021. These two MCSs eventually merged into a single MCS, producing the second peak of precipitation at 00Z on 6 February 2021. Analysis of the moisture transport indicates that the strong and persistent north-westerly wind near the surface induced by CENS prior to and during the event created an intensive meridional (southward) tropospheric moisture transport from the South China Sea towards Semarang. In addition, the westerly flow induced by low-frequency variability associated with La Nina and the tropical depression over the North of Australia produced an intensive zonal (eastward) tropospheric moisture transport from the Indian Ocean towards Semarang. The combined effects of the zonal and meridional moisture transport provided favorable conditions for the development of MCSs, and hence extreme rainfall over Semarang. Measurements of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) structure were performed for three years (October 2017–August 2020) at the Russian observatory "Ice Base Cape Baranova" (79.280° N, 101.620° E) using SODAR (Sound Detection And Ranging). These measurements were part of the YOPP (Year of Polar Prediction) project "Boundary layer measurements in the high Arctic" (CATS_BL) within the scope of a joint German–Russian project. In addition to SODAR-derived vertical profiles of wind speed and direction, a suite of complementary measurements at the observatory was available. ABL measurements were used for verification of the regional climate model COSMO-CLM (CCLM) with a 5 km resolution for 2017–2020. The CCLM was run with nesting in ERA5 data in a forecast mode for the measurement period. SODAR measurements were mostly limited to wind speeds <12 m/s since the signal was often lost for higher winds. The SODAR data showed a topographical channeling effect for the wind field in the lowest 100 m and some low-level jets (LLJs). The verification of the CCLM with near-surface data of the observatory showed good agreement for the wind and a negative bias for the 2 m temperature. The comparison with SODAR data showed a positive bias for the wind speed of about 1 m/s below 100 m, which increased to 1.5 m/s for higher levels. In contrast to the SODAR data, the CCLM data showed the frequent presence of LLJs associated with the topographic channeling in Shokalsky Strait. Although SODAR wind profiles are limited in range and have a lot of gaps, they represent a valuable data set for model verification. However, a full picture of the ABL structure and the climatology of channeling events could be obtained only with the model data. The climatological evaluation showed that the wind field at Cape Baranova was not only influenced by direct topographic channeling under conditions of southerly winds through the Shokalsky Strait but also by channeling through a mountain gap for westerly winds. LLJs were detected in 37% of all profiles and most LLJs were associated with channeling, particularly LLJs with a jet speed ≥ 15 m/s (which were 29% of all LLJs). The analysis of the simulated 10 m wind field showed that the 99%-tile of the wind speed reached 18 m/s and clearly showed a dipole structure of channeled wind at both exits of Shokalsky Strait. The climatology of channeling events showed that this dipole structure was caused by the frequent occurrence of channeling at both exits. The Qaidam Basin is a sensitive climate transition zone revealing a wide spectrum of local climates and their variability. In order to obtain an objective and quantitative expression of local climate regions as well as avoid the challenge to pre-define the number of heterogeneous local climates, the ISODATA cluster method is employed to achieve the fine-grained climate divisions of the Qaidam Basin, which can heuristically alter the number of clusters based on the input of monthly temperature and precipitation data. The fine-grained climate classification extends the traditional Köppen climate classification and represents the complex climate transformation processes in terms of fine-grained climate clusters. The following results are observed: (i) The Qaidam Basin is divided into an arid desert basin area and the surrounding alpine mountainous areas. The climate distribution is affected by both the altitude and the dryness ratio, which, employing the Budyko framework, largely characterizes the local energy–water fluxes at the surface and the related vegetation regimes (biomes). The fine-grained climate classification successfully captures their causal relationships and represents them well by the local climates: the climatic spatial differentiation in the mountainous areas is highly consistent with the topography and reveals an elevation-dependent circular distribution from the edges to the center of the basin; the climate heterogeneity within the basin presents a west-to-east meridional distribution due to the combined effect of the mid-latitude westerlies and the Indian monsoon. (ii) The climate gradients are spatially different over the Qaidam Basin. The surrounding mountainous areas have a large climate gradient compared to the inner basin; the southern mountain edge is governed by a more severe climate change than the north-eastern one; and the climate gradient is larger in the eastern than in the western basin. (iii) The lake regions within the basin show an obvious lake effect and reveal a local lake climate. Spatially, a common structure emerges with a dryer-climate zone or watershed embedding a wetter lake-affected area, which appears to migrate eastward becoming stepwise wetter from the very dry center to the wet eastern boundary of the Qaidam basin. This provides a topographically induced insight of the wet climate expansion of initially arid climates and is crucial to improve the Qaidam Basin's ecological environment. Finally, although this work mainly focuses on the local-scale climates and their variability in the Qaidam Basin, the data-driven cluster methodology for climate refinement is transferable to regional- even global-scale climate studies, which offers broad application prospects. In this study, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis v5 (ERA5) wave height reanalysis data and sea-level pressure data from two seasonal prediction systems were used to study the wave characteristics of the Southern Ocean and the seasonal prediction of difficulty for the vessels crossing the westerlies. The results show that significant wave height, extreme wave height, and extreme wave processes were all much stronger in austral winter than in austral summer, making it more difficult for vessels to cross the westerlies in winter. Furthermore, the difficulty of crossing the westerlies has increased over the last 40 years, except in areas east of South America. We found that the monthly frequency of crossing the westerlies between 100° E and 75° W could be accurately estimated point by point using the monthly mean sea-level pressure difference between 30° S and 65° S. With a 1-month lead, the multi-model forecasts gave a fairly accurate forecast of such sea-level pressure difference signal between 150° E to 60° W for target months from May to December. Based on these assessments, we could estimate the difficulty of crossing the westerlies in some specific months in advance using a seasonal prediction system. We also found that the seasonal prediction system produced inaccurate predictions of sea-level pressure at high latitudes, which is the main barrier to further accurately estimating the difficulty of crossing the westerlies. These findings may provide support for predicting difficulty for the vessels crossing the westerlies with a 1-month lead and can provide planning for the route and the allocation of material reserves. Taking CMPA (CMA Multi-source Merged Precipitation Analysis System) analysis data as a reference, the research analyzes the forecast performance of ECMWF, CMA-Meso, and SCMOC (National Meteorological Center grid precipitation forecast guidance product) in 74 rainstorm cases in 2020 and 2021 in Qinling Mountains and their surrounding areas by using the dichotomy classical verification score comprehensive diagram and the object-oriented MODE spatial verification method, based on the circulation classification in rainstorm weather. The research conclusions are as follows: (1) based on the high- and low-altitude circulation situation and focused on the direct impact system, rainstorms in the Qinling Mountains and their surrounding areas can be divided into five patterns. (2) Point-to-point verification shows that SCMOC has obvious advantages in rainstorm forecast, but the disadvantage is that the Bias is relatively high. CMA-Meso has advantages in RST (weak weather system) decentralized rainstorm forecast. (3) MODE verification shows that the number of ECMWF and SCMOC independent objects is significantly lower than that of observation, the forecast area of regional rainstorm objects of SCMOC is significantly larger, the SCMOC scattered rainstorm objects are missed, and the number of independent precipitation objects of CMA-Meso is higher than that of the other two precipitation products. (4) The forecast object area and intensity of SCMOC and observation match best in the XFC (westerly trough) circulation situation, while ECMWF has the best results for the forecast of FGXFC (subtropical high westerly trough) rainstorms. An obvious interdecadal change can be measured in the super cyclones (SCs, categories 4 and 5) that occur from October to November over the Bay of Bengal (BoB). This change may be modulated by the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO). A La Niña-like difference between the 1977–1998 (IP1) and 1999–2014 (IP2) periods forced a local Hadley circulation in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean by strengthening the Walker circulation, which caused plummeting upper-level temperatures and ultimately created favorable thermodynamic conditions to enhance the cyclone intensity. Meanwhile, an equatorial downwelling Kelvin wave caused by heating and westerly wind differences entered the BoB rim along the coast and aptly intensified the cyclone, such that the downwelling Kevin wave and Rossby wave generated by its reflection deepened the thermocline in the BoB. The favorable atmospheric and oceanic conditions in IP2 jointly and preferentially cause far more SC activities from October to November over the BoB compared to IP1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of extreme maximum temperature events (EMTEs) in East China in the last 60 years and investigated the relationship between EMTEs and atmospheric circulation. The arithmetic mean, linear trend, and the Mann–Kendall test were applied to daily maximum temperature (DMT) data (1961–2020) from 345 meteorological observation stations with complete observation records in East China to compile four characteristic indexes of EMTEs: intensity, consecutive days, first days, and last days. The analysis of these indexes revealed the following: (1) The annual number of days with a DMT ≥ 35 °C increased at the rate of 1.45 d/decade (p ≤ 0.05); the mutation occurred in 2009 with a growth rate before and after the mutation of 0.4 and 2.8 d/10a, respectively. Most of the region showed an increasing trend, with the most significant increase to the east of the Yangtze River Delta, in coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian, and south of Jiangxi. (2) The EMTE intensity rose at the rate of 0.15 °C/decade (p ≤ 0.05). Most areas showed a significant upward trend, and the historical extreme values of EMTEs mostly appeared in the 21st century. (3) The annual mean growth rate of consecutive EMTE days was 0.24 d/10a, which increased significantly after 2003. In comparison with 1961–2002, consecutive EMTE days increased by 35% during 2003–2020. The rate of increase was significant (p ≤ 0.05) for most areas east of the Yangtze River Delta, coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian, and areas south of Jiangxi. The mean mutation time was 2003, and the growth rate before and after the mutation was 0.4 and 1.4 d/10a, respectively. (4) The mean first EMTE day advanced and the mean last EMTE day became delayed, especially in the 21st century. Over the study period, the mean first EMTE day advanced by 12 days and the mean last EMTE day became delayed by 7 days. (5) The analysis of National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis data indicated that an increasing number of EMTEs have occurred in East China. The reason is that this region experiences atmospheric subsidence resulting from the intensification and westward extension of the subtropical high coupled with the weakening and northward displacement of the mid-latitude westerly trough. The six-hourly ERA-interim reanalysis data were used to analyze the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) characteristics of the zonal wind in the exit region of the East Asian subtropical westerly jet (EAJ) during the winter (November to April). The results indicate that from East Asia to the North Pacific, the zonal wind in the upper troposphere shows significant 10–40-day oscillations, propagating eastward toward the jet exit region. The strength of the intraseasonal zonal wind anomaly increases from the lower troposphere to the upper troposphere, reaching a peak between 300 and 200 hPa. The zonal wind ISO in the jet exit area is closely related to the intraseasonal inverse temperature tendency between the north and south of the jet exit in the troposphere. In the acceleration (deceleration) phase of the intraseasonal west wind, the air temperature decreases (increases) in the north of the exit and increases (decreases) in the south of the exit. The intraseasonal temperature tendency is stronger in the north of the EAJ exit than that in the south. In the north of the EAJ exit, the intraseasonal temperature tendency is decided by the temperature advection, where the whole troposphere is controlled by the north wind in the west wind acceleration phase and controlled by the south wind in the west wind deceleration phase, so the intensity of temperature advection is strong. However, adiabatic heating plays a decisive role in affecting the temperature evolution in the south of the jet exit area, and the intraseasonal meridional wind is the opposite between the mid-upper troposphere and the lower troposphere, resulting in weak temperature advection and the weak temperature tendency. Therefore, although the zonal wind ISO in the jet exit area is the result of the joint action of the ISOs in different latitudes, the influence of mid-high latitudes is particularly important. Clues of climate change on the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period (40 ka) are important for revealing the mechanism of desertification of middle-latitude deserts in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Studies are still rare for the understanding of the specific relationship of climate changes between the Alashan Plateau and the global. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of the existing research in China and the international academic community, this paper reviews the environmental evolution history of the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period from the records of paleo-environment and geomorphological characteristics in different deserts of the plateau (e.g., Badanjilin, Tenggeli, and Wulanbuhe). From about 40 ka to the end of the last glacial maximum, the climate on the plateau was wetter than it is today, and to the end of the Pleistocene, the climate was generally dry and the aeolian activities were enhanced. However, the climate was arid during the whole last glacial period in the Wulanbuhe Desert, evidently different from the overall pattern of the plateau. The Tenggeli Desert was characterized by an arid climate in the early Holocene. The most controversial events for the Alashan Plateau are the drought events in the middle Holocene in the Badanjilin Desert. The role and impact of the westerlies and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) systems on the climate change of the desert and even the whole plateau is a vexed question that brings different views in different periods. There is still a lack of definite evidence representing the events of global environmental change that occurred on the plateau during the discussed period. The distinctive morphology of dune mountains and the distribution of sand dunes are mutually indicative of the direction and energy of wind systems on the plateau. It is suggested that appropriate wind energy is the significant key to the desertification in these middle-latitude deserts on the plateau. From a global-scale review of climate change, the desertification of the modern-scale sandy desert landscapes on the Alashan Plateau is generally related to the global glacial period and the cold and dry climate during the past 40 ka.
