This paper is devoted to the mathematical modeling of traffic flow in a large automobile network. A statistical model of traffic flow proposed by the authors and designed for full-scale modeling of the operation of large-scale transport systems on long time intervals is used. A model has been constructed for one of the sides of the Moscow Ring Road and experiments have been carried out for two ways of jamming on the highway. The functionality of the naive entry control model has been tested in both types of the experiments. It has been shown that even the simplest method of limiting the incoming flow is efficient in terms of highway travel time losses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The work is dedicated to metrological validation of meteor-based method of information protection—new technique for distant encryption key generation which might be capable of providing thorough security. The method is based on high-precision phase measurements of radio signal propagation time performed simultaneously in both forward and backward directions. These measurements are possible only if the communicants’ time scales are synchronized with nanosecond precision, which is shown to be possible by meteor time transfer. In order to account for short-term instability of quantum frequency standards, considering irregularity and variable precision of meteor measurements, we use optimal linear filtration and experimental measurement analogue, based on the results of meteor synchronization experiment conducted on the Mendeleevo(Moscow)-Kazan radio path. The possibility of using a meteor channel in two modes for remote time scale synchronization and encryption key generation is shown together with estimates for the capacity of this procedure. A mathematical model of the transport system of a city or an urban agglomeration intended for forecasting the transport and passenger flows was described. It is distinguished for (i) modeling the differences in the structure of travels at different times of day as well as at different days of week and seasons and (ii) consistent use of the concept of “generalized cost” of travel as a criterion for estimating the paths and inter-district “transport” distances. The model was calibrated in practice for the transport network of the Moscow agglomeration which includes the city of Moscow and its suburbs where the major part of the population of the Moscow province is concentrated. The article reports on the 75th birthday of academician Evgenii Aleksandrovich Fedosov. Academician Evgenii Aleksandrovich Fedosov, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Energetics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Control Processes, Chairman of the Section on Mechanical Engineering and Control Processes, and Chairman of the United Scientific Council for "Control Processes and Automation," a doctor of sciences, and a professor, will be 75 on May 14, 2004. He is an eminent scientist in air-defense missilery. He was born on May 14, 1929 in Moscow. He graduated from the Bauman Institute of Technology, Moscow. In 1954, he joined the State Research Institute of Aviation Engineering, in which he grew from an engineer to a senior scientific assistant, then as the Head of the Institute, and now its General Director.
