This study examines the determinants of Islamic banks’ non-performing financing from the perspective of regional and sectoral aspects during the periods before and during the pandemic. The study adopts a dynamic panel data analysis, namely the Generalized Method of Moments, and assesses panel data from the Indonesian banking industry in 32 provinces from October 2018 to July 2021 on a monthly basis. The study uses non-performing financing as the dependent variable and regional inflation, total financing, financing to deposit ratio, and Islamic bank size as the dependent variables. The findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic generally influenced the performance of non-performing financing in Islamic banks. This was evident in the significant relationship between regional inflation, total financing, financing to deposit ratio, and the non-performing financing value. Moreover, in the sectoral analysis, a different level of impact was observed in each sector. The most severe impact was seen in the construction sector, while other sectors were less affected during the pandemic. The regional analysis shows that all provinces on Java Island, as the epicenter of the pandemic in Indonesia, did not perform better than the provinces outside Java. Concerning policy implications, the Indonesian Financial Services Authority must be more aware of the determinants of Islamic banks’ non-performing financing by considering sectoral and regional aspects. Furthermore, sectoral and regional-based policies should be developed to achieve and maintain the performance of Islamic banks’ non-performing financing. This study aims to investigate the impact of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) on the financial performance of sharia banking. GCG is measured by the Board of Commissioners Performance, the Board of Commissioners Composition, the Number of Audit Committees, the Board of Directors, and the Sharia Supervisory Board Performance, whereas financial performance is proxied by Return on Assets, financing risk (Non-Performing Financing), and capital (Capital Adequacy Ratio). Sharia commercial banks registered by Bank Indonesia made the sample of this study. Annual reports and GCG reports of sharia commercial banks from 2014 to 2017 are used as a data source. The study uses a panel data regression approach to analyze the data; some interesting results have been obtained. The Sharia board positively affected financial performance of Islamic banks in terms of return on assets and capital adequacy ratio, and negatively as to non-performing financing. Similarly, the board of directors had a significant impact on the financial performance of Islamic banks in the same direction as the sharia supervisory board in terms of the three components. Meanwhile, the board of commissioners had a significant and positive impact only on the return on assets of Islamic banks in Indonesia.

This study is aimed at analyzing the financial performance and indicator of macroeconomics to influence the quality of financing at Islamic Rural Bank Industry (IRBI) in Indonesia. The panel data regression is used to predict the change of quality of financing which is reflected by value of non-performing financing (NPF). The model of this study is grouped by four areas of working zones because IRBI has different competency depending on its region. The sample of the study used 72 IRBIs in the periods of Quarter II 2010 to Quarter I 2016. The results of the study show that simultanuously variables for the size of banks, financing to deposit ratio (FDR), operational efficiency ratio (OER), return on equity (ROE), expense to assets (EA), percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), and the rate of inflation are statistically significant to non-performing financing of the IRBI in Indonesia. GDP has strongly significant impact on the NPF of IRBI in Indonesia. According to Areas of working zones, inflation has quite significant impact on the IRBI in Zone One, and GDP has strongly significant impact on the IRBI in Zone Two, Zone Three, and Zone Four. Nevertheless, there are different effects of GDP towards NPF which has a negative impact on Zone One and Zone Four, meanwhile Zone Two and Zone Three have positive impact. In conclusion, government policy treatment should be different at every zone.
