PEOPLE with disabilities ,CONVENTION on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - Abstract
In the editorial of the journal "Special Education," a report is given about an event in Berlin organized by Jürgen Dusel, the Federal Government Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the German Institute for Human Rights. During the event, it was determined that much still needs to be done to meet the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities regarding education, accessibility, protection against violence, guardianship law, employment, housing, participation, and implementation structures. The topic of deinstitutionalization was particularly discussed, with emphasis on the guidelines of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is noted that there is still a great need for action in Germany to enable people with disabilities to live self-determined lives and be included in the community. Various programmatic challenges are mentioned to improve the participation of people with disabilities, including the creation of outpatient support services and the development of standards for supported participation. It is emphasized that a comprehensive inventory and research on these topics are necessary. [Extracted from the article]
