This paper explores how one transnational emergent multilingual (TEM) adolescent described her languaging practices across the spaces she navigated daily both within and outside of the classroom across her first year in the US Findings illustrate how this adolescent – a home language speaker of Spanish and Quiché and emergent speaker of English – engaged in languaging practices in ways that illustrated the deep connection between language and identity while also representing how she had been socialized to understand language as both a tool for communication and relationship-building and a way of showcasing – or concealing – her identity. Using translanguaging theory, specifically conceptualizations of the translanguaging instinct and translanguaging spaces, this paper illustrates how monoglossic ideologies operate in ways that can overpower students’ existing heteroglossic ideologies causing them to question their translanguaging instincts and abilities. Findings indicate the need to focus on the creation of translanguaging spaces that cultivate and nurture students’ translanguaging instinct by pushing back on larger monoglossic ideologies and language policies that dictate both school and community spaces that TEMs navigate. This paper explores how transmodalising pedagogy contributes to equitable STEM literacy education for emergent bilingual learners (EBLs). Attending to the urgent call for serving linguistically and culturally diverse learners in STEM classrooms and informed by the supporting theories and practices of transmodalising pedagogy, this paper provides a repertoire of transmodalising pedagogy to support elementary school EBLs' STEM disciplinary content and literacy learning. Particularly, this paper shares two elementary teachers' lessons in mathematics and science classrooms to showcase how transmodalising disciplinary literacy instruction for young EBLs can afford equitable access to STEM curriculum while engaging EBLs in disciplinary discourse practices. Sociocultural competence is the third goal of TWI programs, yet there is a lack of consensus on what it looks like in terms of student outcomes in the classroom. As an inherently social construct, sociocultural competence leads to successful interactions with people who are different from each other along various dimensions. Sociocultural competence in TWI classrooms, specifically, may manifest in successful friendship formation among students across different language and cultural groups. We use Social Network Analysis to investigate a friendship network in one TWI kindergarten classroom in Costa Rica using a measure of "homophily" – the tendency for people to create ties with people who are similar to themselves. Findings from the data in this study reveal patterns of friendship that indicate higher levels of sociocultural competence for bilingual students, both individually and as a group, in that they more regularly establish friendships across language groups in their classroom (showing less homophily) than do English or Spanish dominant students. A major contribution of this paper is to show how social network theory can be leveraged to help better specify and measure sociocultural competence in the TWI classroom by looking across different levels of analyses. In a bilingual teacher preparation milieu fraught with high stakes and little time to develop biliteracies in humanizing ways, the researchers engaged in a comparative case study of two types of bilingual pre-service teachers, a heritage bilingual and an initially Spanish-dominant bilingual, to explore how they grew in their biliteracies after the redesign of three bilingual teacher preparation courses. Focused on holistic biliteracies and a Latina/Chicana embodied pedagogies of care, the data collection including discussion posts, papers, lesson plans, surveys, and interviews over three years. Findings reveal the biliteracies development process (the many ways of making meaning in and between languages) for both students followed a camino of convivencia, a journey with incisive stages with guides that encouraged their biliteracies and bilingual identities. They were further marked by highs and lows in confidence, as they contrasted their own biliteracies with others. Importantly, they each connected their biliteracies journeys to those of their future students, which they envisioned as a legacy of courage. Taken together, this study adds nuance to how holistic biliteracies a can be intentionally and comprehensively developed for two typologies of language minoritized students in bilingual teacher preparation programs while also preparing them for bilingual teacher certification. In this paper, we look at pedagogies of care articulated by Latina high school teachers who teach Latinx multilingual students in a variety of content areas, including Latinx studies. We draw on raciolinguistics to understand how the teachers in this study practice "critical linguistic cariño," a radical form of care that considers how linguistic practices of Latinx students are racialized within the U.S. and beyond. The findings demonstrate how critical linguistic cariño is a pedagogical orientation that moves beyond simply caring for multilingual students. Instead, it is praxis that recognizes the sociopolitical contexts of language as central to care. As the teachers in this study have highlighted, to care for Latinx students is to love and actively create spaces for their full cultural and linguistic identities as they exist within these contexts. This paper draws from a broader research project and reports on a qualitative case study that investigated instructional practices in grades 3–5 Two-Way Immersion (TWI) classrooms where the partner language is Spanish. Using Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which CRP is utilized by TWI teachers. Semi-structured interviews, class observations, and documents such as lesson plans were used as primary sources and collected from nine teacher participants. Findings show that building a culture of academic success was prevalent across all classrooms. While there were some evidence of instructional strategies promoting cultural competence, culturally relevant literature and topics were limited. Across all classrooms, a focus on socio-political awareness was absent. After providing insight on how classroom instruction engaged components of CRP, this paper addresses implications for TWI programs and action steps to ensure all tenets of CRP are utilized. Federal law requires states and school districts to institute accountability systems that report disaggregated student data to ensure that all children make academic progress. However, one of the mandated categories for disaggregation – English Learner (EL) – is reported as a single group despite representing students who are beginning, intermediate, and advanced in their acquisition of English. We argue that such a disaggregation is not sufficiently nuanced and may inadvertently hurt the very students it seeks to serve. Through the analysis of one large metro-area's accountability framework, this paper finds that there is a statistically significant relationship between EL level of English proficiency and school accountability rating that negatively impacts schools with large Intermediate EL populations. This paper explores how two dual language preschool teachers demonstrated critical consciousness in their dual language education (DLE) classroom in Arizona. DLE has historically been grounded in equity for language minoritized students and promises to support students' bilingualism, biliteracy, sociocultural competence, and academic achievement. However, inequities within DLE have been a social justice concern hindering DLE's goals. Arguing the role of teachers' critical consciousness in addressing inequities in DLE, we used Spolky's language policy theory to understand teachers' language policies in their classroom. In this ethnographic study, data was collected through interviews, participant observation, and recording classroom instruction. Utilizing the constant-comparative method, we identified two themes—critical reflection and action—exhibiting the teachers' critical consciousness as language policymakers in their classrooms. The teachers reflected on the DLE's value for students and the power hierarchies among English and Spanish and the speakers of those languages. Their actions were toward promoting bilingualism, challenging English hegemony, and creating an inclusive and social justice-oriented learning community. Our study contributes to preschool DLE literature by documenting the teachers' challenges regarding how larger oppressive beliefs related to language and race influenced students' language use and the teachers' actions to dismantle such challenges. Under the theoretical underpinnings of language socialization and continua of biliteracy, this ethnographic case study documents how cultural performing arts, as part of extracurricular activities, promote bicultural identity and biliteracy development among Vietnamese American children. The study was set in two transnational contexts: a community-based Vietnamese heritage language school and a Vietnamese dual-language two-way immersion program, both located in a southwestern U.S. city. Data was drawn from observation field notes, interviews, teachers' testimony, and visual records. Findings show cultural events created by and for Vietnamese Americans create affordances for dialogic teaching on culture, language play, and cultural identity formation through collaborative efforts between home, school, and community. This paper implies a need for (1) purposeful integration of cultural events held by transnational communities into school curricula and (2) an in-depth focus on the sociocultural aspects of language programs, especially among the less-commonly-taught-language groups. This paper advances the conceptualization of STEM teacher professional knowledge reflecting the specialized knowledge needed to support English learner (EL) language development during science and mathematics instruction. What distinguishes this model is the integration of conceptual understanding, a key feature of subject matter knowledge, with disciplinary literacy knowledge (DLK). Several models have been proposed to capture the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of effective teachers. However, few studies have empirically investigated the model's utility in producing effective EL instruction. Two professional development (PD) approaches were tested. One approach explicitly focused on developing subject matter knowledge and the second approach focused on developing pedagogical knowledge without an explicit attention to subject matter knowledge. Both approaches included PD on DLK. Outcome variables included teacher math and science content knowledge and instructional quality. Findings show overall science content knowledge score increased for both PD approaches, but no significant differences in overall math content knowledge score were found. This pattern suggests that for elementary teachers, prolonged PD can improve teacher science knowledge. Significant increases in instructional quality were found only for teachers who received PD with an explicit focus subject matter. PD focused on pedagogical knowledge did not improve overall teaching quality. Implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study sought to investigate the role played by language in the academic performance of science students at a high school in the Free State province, South Africa who are taught through a language different from their mother tongue. The paper reports on the decisive mantle language plays in the comprehension and subsequent scholastic performance of these Chemistry students. The study adopted a mixed method research design in which the participants were randomly assigned to either the control or experimental group using Research Randomizer. Participants in the experimental group were bestowed intervention in form of lessons and learning materials in their mother tongue. Responses were drawn from a sample of 30 tenth grade students on the role language plays in the tutelage of tenth-grade Chemistry. Data was gathered from three tests written by the participants as well as from interview responses. A paired t-test disclosed a statistically significant difference in the academic achievement of the two research groups in the posttest. The upshot affirms that the employed paradigm shift, where languages of input and output were deliberately interchanged, proved to be an indispensable instructional approach as these Chemistry students were accorded the opportunity to learn in their home language. The present research findings are in line with previous research which affirms the use of students' mother tongue as being a social practice that goes beyond the four walls of the classroom. Emergent bilinguals’ engagement and participation with learning is closely connected to the identities they are able to construct in this learning. In this paper, I present a model for understanding how young emergent bilinguals begin to construct identities with language and learning across school-based activities. Drawing upon Holland, Lachiotte, Skinner & Cain’s (1998) framework of how identities are shaped across figured worlds, and Nasir & Hand’s (2006, 2008) notion of practice-linked identities in school-based contexts, the model identifies the ways in which three components—context, subject positioning, and agency—play a critical role in how emergent bilinguals in a Spanish-English dual language, elementary school program begin to construct identities with learning and language. In juxtaposing the experiences of two emergent bilinguals, data highlights how these students used language in novel ways to assert a level of agency to become active participants in school-based activities. This linguistic anthropological case study demonstrates the ways in which a heterogeneous lab group of adolescents in a ninth-grade physics classroom constructed raciolinguistic ideologies that intersected with their locally constructed notions of science expertise. Using ethnography and discourse analysis this study unpacks how students in one lab group, guided by their teacher's instruction, constructed a model of personhood for science expertise that largely excluded female and Latinx students. Mock Spanish emerged as a central practice through which this marginalization was achieved. Implications for promoting equity for multilingual youth in heterogeneous classrooms are discussed. This qualitative study examined the pandemic experiences of 29 teachers working with emergent bilingual learners (EBLs). The goal of the study was to identify demands, resources, and well-being consequences of the pandemic. Participants described learning new online teaching methods while integrating various pandemic-related initiatives, supporting students' socio-emotional needs while making up for perceived academic losses, and maneuvering COVID-19 protocols and related staff shortages. To maneuver these demands, teachers relied on support from colleagues and administrators, as well as flexible policies, bilingual resources, and limit setting. An understanding of cross-cultural differences in narratives, particularly in children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, can help clinicians and other professionals distinguish narrative differences from impaired narratives. This study describes similarities and differences in micro-and-macrostructural components in the narrative retells of 32 typically developing Latino dual language learners and Caucasian kindergarteners. A multivariate analysis of covariance suggests that patterns of narrative use of microstructural components were comparable across groups. Group differences in the use of some macrostructural components like character development and mental states were observed. These preliminary findings suggest that some aspects of the macrostructure of narrative language in children may be more susceptible to cultural differences than microstructure ones. In response to the limitations presented by restrictive language separation practices in dual language immersion programs, this study describes a curriculum bridging approach that was undertaken by a group of teachers in a one-way Chinese English Dual Language Education program to promote and build on students' full linguistic repertoires. The present study was conducted in a public charter school where students were mostly English dominant. Focusing on language allocation decisions at different levels, we examine how teachers bridged instruction for continuity and reinforcement of students' content and language learning across Chinese and English instructional times. The findings also reveal challenges teachers faced in the planning and implementation processes of curriculum bridging, which unearthed varying teacher assumptions about specific subject matters and pedagogical strategies. This study explores the language habitus and practices in one Vietnamese immigrant family in Melbourne. It contributes to research on family language policy in multicultural contexts. Using a Bourdieusian framework to explore the interrelationships between language beliefs, practices and management in a nuanced way, the article discusses how the children's and adults' language beliefs are situated in their lived experiences as a result of their participation in the different social fields of family, school, and the workplace. The article then further examines the "structuring" feature of the habitus through an exploration of the children's agency in family language policy in two aspects: their manifestation of their agency as well as how their habitus and their accumulated capital shape their language practices. Findings point to the shared multilingual habitus between the grandmother, mother and the two children and children's agency in family language practices and management. The data analysis and theoretical discussions suggest that Bourdieu's concepts are useful and nuanced lenses to investigate family language policy and are complementary to Spolsky's seminal theoretical framework of family language policy. This articles presents a chronology of events of the Serna v. Portales Municipal Schools (1974) court case decided by the United States 10th Circuit Court of Appeals on its 50th anniversary. Serna protected and codified bilingual education for New Mexican children. Four lessons learned from those involved in the struggle for language rights are included. (1) Contextualize pedagogy within place and history; (2) Highlight the collaborative efforts of diverse groups toward change; (3) Design student-centered curriculum responding to community's needs and strengths; (4) Connect to the larger purpose/soulfulness of our work. This article outlines the development and validation of the Mathematics Education of English Learners Scale (MEELS) to understand mathematics preservice teachers' beliefs about teaching mathematics to English learners (ELs). Nine hundred and twenty-five PSTs from 17 states across the U.S. were divided randomly into two samples for the analysis. A Principal Component Analysis was conducted with one sample of 463 respondents, which suggested a four-factor model and a five-factor model. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis with the other sample of 462 respondents suggested that the four-factor model was a better fit. The 19 item four-factor model consisted of the following factors – Classroom Strategies, Native Language, Language in Math, and Comparison with non ELs. The factors show that preservice teachers' beliefs about teaching ELs cluster around teaching moves in the mathematics classroom with ELs, the use of students' native language in the class, the role of language in mathematics, and balancing the teaching and learning of both ELs and non ELs in the mathematics class. The MEELS can be used in teacher preparation to evaluate preservice teachers' beliefs in the program. The factors of MEELS can highlight areas where preservice teachers need more focus. Schools are encountering a unique problem regarding how to best accommodate the increasing number of active bilingual learners/users of English (ABLE) students on state achievement tests. Previously, states used disability focused rather than language responsive accommodations for these students. The current study employed double-coding procedures to determine the number of tools, supports, and accommodations allowed for ABLE students across all U.S. states. Results revealed substantial heterogeneity of state practices, as some states demonstrated a decrease in the number of accommodations over time while some states offered more language responsive accommodations. This study explores the intertwined phenomena of language deprivation, emergent writing, and translanguaging in deaf students without additional disabilities in grades 3–6. A case study was conducted using deductive and inductive approaches to analyze 42 writing samples. There were four areas of focus: (1) stages of emergent writing development, (2) writing change over time, (3) emerging writing and translanguaging features, and (4) writing features unique to the context of language deprivation. First, pre-writing samples add to evidence that older deaf students undergo similar developmental processes with their emergent writing patterns. Second, an analysis of pre- and post-writing samples indicated that movement between stages occurred for most students. Third, students incorporated emergent writing and translanguaging features that reflected the application of their linguistic resources in writing. Finally, existing theories were extended by uncovering writing characteristics unique to the context of language deprivation. Incomplete ideation and restricted translanguaging practices were identified as attributions of language deprivation impacting cognitive and linguistic resources. This study provides evidence that deaf students as old as thirteen years old are developing emergent writing skills not because of their deafness but likely because they were in environments that produced chronic inadequate language access. In this longitudinal, qualitative case study, critical pedagogical and sociocultural perspectives were employed to analyze the language and literacy strengths, challenges, inequities, and gentrification issues that characterized the first three years of a two-way, 50–50 Spanish-English dual-language (DL) program's implementation, and how the DL staff addressed the challenges, inequities, and gentrification issues. Examples of strengths were a balanced Spanish-English instructional schedule, literacy materials in Spanish and English, and the presence of translanguaging. Some challenges were the required use of instructional reading materials and English report cards employed with the district's monolingual English-speaking students, and finding time to teach literacy in both languages. Several initial gentrification issues were allowing more students from English-speaking families to enroll in the DL program than students from Spanish-speaking families and not providing Spanish report cards. Although the DL personnel resolved some of the inequities and gentrification issues, the district's actions and policies undermined the DL program's bilingual and biliteracy goals. The English-dominant students were privileged compared to the Spanish-dominant students, and the DL students' English performance was prioritized over their Spanish performance. The purpose of this study was to examine Mexican and Mexican-American mothers' perspectives about the construction of two-way dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs in the context of an urban area in South Texas and to analyze the factors that contribute to their decision about their children's participation in such programs. Our main data sources included 14 interviews, two personal narratives, field notes, and audio recordings from school and district meetings. We found that in addition to the general goals of DLBE programs (i.e., academic achievement, bilingualism, and biculturalism), there are additional factors that DLBE programs need to consider to better serve Mexican and Mexican-American communities. These factors include: a) bilingualism for heritage sustainability, social integration, and occupational inclusion; b) school-community building; c) meeting families' basic needs; and d) attention to the dissemination of program information and misinformation. The phonological loop of the working memory system plays a key role in language learning. This study examined the trajectories between two dual-language learner groups (English Learners [ELs] and Spanish Learners [SLs]) on phonological loop measures in L1 and L2. At Grade 1, children completed a battery of vocabulary and cognitive measures and were retested in Grade 3. A series of random effects ANOVAs showed that SLs outperformed ELs on English loop measures, with strong growth in the English loop, but not in Spanish. The state of Texas requires candidates to pass the Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT) a test seen as a gatekeeping mechanism (Clark & Flores, 2002) in a field that presents chronic shortage of certified teachers (Arroyo-Romano, 2016). This case study of a bilingual education preparation program (BEPP) in Texas reveals the efforts by both professors to help and students to pass the BTLPT. Findings report on faculty and candidate narrative accounts of pedagogical practices. Recommendations emerged from faculty and students' suggestions for improving test-preparation and Spanish development of HSSs teacher candidates. The authors respond to Guerrero's (2013) recommendation for "more concrete measures to help pre-service bilingual teachers improve their language skills" (p. 2) and accepts Zúñiga's (2021) invitation for teacher educators to find venues to share how we "go about supporting bilingual TCs [teacher candidates] in their professional development" (p. 228). The study offers directions for action within BEPPs, universities with HSSs students, and the PK-20 school system. This study investigated the effectiveness of an intervention designed to support sixth-grade Spanish-speaking English as Additional Language (EAL) learners and their English proficient classmates in acquiring pre-algebra knowledge and skills and associated academic vocabulary. The sample consisted of 88 EAL learners and their 139 English proficient classmates who had failed a fifth-grade final math exam. Treatment materials and methods differed from those used in the control group by building students' foundational math skills and academic language; using visual and linguistic supports; and capitalizing on student's home language knowledge. Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed modeling at the item level. Over the last decade, unprecedented numbers of students of Mexican origin have been transitioning from the U.S. to Mexico. The presence of these students in Mexican schools has raised concerns regarding the challenges they face and the possible squandering of their linguistic and cultural asset. In this article, we contribute to an understanding of the question of why some individuals experience this transition as difficult, but not others. Drawing on a research project about the experiences of migrant students in public elementary schools of Tamaulipas, Mexico, we analyze how migrant children's narratives portray the interrelationship between migratory moves, schooling experiences, and the implications this has for their bicultural and bilingual identities. The phenomenological approach of the study suggests that participants' narratives emphasize the interplay between individual identities and the wider sociolinguistic, institutional and political context, which lead to divergent processes and outcomes of their transition. The Language Interaction Snapshot (LISn; Sprachman et al., 2009) was used to measure the quantity and quality of language interactions in English and Spanish in 143 preschool classrooms serving Spanish-speaking dual language learners. Both teachers (n = 112) and assistant teachers (n = 92) were included in analyses with a total of 461 Spanish-speaking children. We report the amount of English and Spanish as well as types of language scaffolding used by teachers and assistants. We also disaggregate by classroom language model (Spanish, bilingual, or English instruction) and explore the amount of Spanish and English specifically used by Spanish-speaking teachers and assistants. Seventy five percent of cycles had no language coded and of the rest English was the most frequently used across all classroom language models including with Spanish-speaking teachers and assistants. Translanguaging, the fluid and dynamic language practices of bilinguals, reimagines language learning and offers the possibility of a more equitable academic experience for active bilingual students of Color, which was the impetus for our inquiry. This article presents the findings of an ethnographic study conducted in a second-grade dual-language classroom that focused on how bilanguaging love is manifested through the perspectives and approaches to translanguaging of bilingual students and their bilingual teacher. Drawing on the concepts of translanguaging and bilanguaging love, we present two main findings: (1) Generative translanguaging perspectives, and (2) Confronting tensions with and through translanguaging. The findings have important implications for translanguaging implementation in bilingual spaces and recognizing that the work involved in this approach is sustained by love for and with bilingual students and communities of Color. In response to the limitations presented by restrictive language separation practices in dual language immersion programs, this study describes a curriculum bridging approach that was undertaken by a group of teachers in a one-way Chinese English Dual Language Education program to promote and build on students' full linguistic repertoires. The present study was conducted in a public charter school where students were mostly English dominant. Focusing on language allocation decisions at different levels, we examine how teachers bridged instruction for continuity and reinforcement of students' content and language learning across Chinese and English instructional times. The findings also reveal challenges teachers faced in the planning and implementation processes of curriculum bridging, which unearthed varying teacher assumptions about specific subject matters and pedagogical strategies. This study explores the intertwined phenomena of language deprivation, emergent writing, and translanguaging in deaf students without additional disabilities in grades 3–6. A case study was conducted using deductive and inductive approaches to analyze 42 writing samples. There were four areas of focus: (1) stages of emergent writing development, (2) writing change over time, (3) emerging writing and translanguaging features, and (4) writing features unique to the context of language deprivation. First, pre-writing samples add to evidence that older deaf students undergo similar developmental processes with their emergent writing patterns. Second, an analysis of pre- and post-writing samples indicated that movement between stages occurred for most students. Third, students incorporated emergent writing and translanguaging features that reflected the application of their linguistic resources in writing. Finally, existing theories were extended by uncovering writing characteristics unique to the context of language deprivation. Incomplete ideation and restricted translanguaging practices were identified as attributions of language deprivation impacting cognitive and linguistic resources. This study provides evidence that deaf students as old as thirteen years old are developing emergent writing skills not because of their deafness but likely because they were in environments that produced chronic inadequate language access. Schools are encountering a unique problem regarding how to best accommodate the increasing number of active bilingual learners/users of English (ABLE) students on state achievement tests. Previously, states used disability focused rather than language responsive accommodations for these students. The current study employed double-coding procedures to determine the number of tools, supports, and accommodations allowed for ABLE students across all U.S. states. Results revealed substantial heterogeneity of state practices, as some states demonstrated a decrease in the number of accommodations over time while some states offered more language responsive accommodations. This article outlines the development and validation of the Mathematics Education of English Learners Scale (MEELS) to understand mathematics preservice teachers' beliefs about teaching mathematics to English learners (ELs). Nine hundred and twenty-five PSTs from 17 states across the U.S. were divided randomly into two samples for the analysis. A Principal Component Analysis was conducted with one sample of 463 respondents, which suggested a four-factor model and a five-factor model. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis with the other sample of 462 respondents suggested that the four-factor model was a better fit. The 19 item four-factor model consisted of the following factors – Classroom Strategies, Native Language, Language in Math, and Comparison with non ELs. The factors show that preservice teachers' beliefs about teaching ELs cluster around teaching moves in the mathematics classroom with ELs, the use of students' native language in the class, the role of language in mathematics, and balancing the teaching and learning of both ELs and non ELs in the mathematics class. The MEELS can be used in teacher preparation to evaluate preservice teachers' beliefs in the program. The factors of MEELS can highlight areas where preservice teachers need more focus. In this article, we report on a mixed method study conducted through a previously validated bilingual instrument. The purpose was to understand elementary bilingual and dual language (BDL) teachers' perspectives of science and engineering (S&E) teaching in Massachusetts and Puerto Rico with the goal of developing situated professional development in science and engineering (S&E). Our findings suggest that an asset-based, and content-language integrated approach is needed to develop BDL professional development models attuned to specific locations, program models, and grade levels. An important subgroup of English learner-classified (EL) students immigrate to the U.S., entering U.S. schools upon their arrival. Using growth models and statewide data, this study describes the incoming English proficiency and subsequent English language growth of newcomer students, including the student, program, and school characteristics that are associated with differences in English language growth patterns among newcomers. The study further explores how newcomer students' English proficiency levels and growth compare to those of their non-newcomer EL-classified peers. We find that, on average, newcomer students have low initial English proficiency levels but their English proficiency develops quickly. There is wide variation in newcomer English level and growth patterns, however, suggestive that schools play an important role in fostering growth. Finally, we find exploratory evidence that newcomers enter school at earlier stages of English proficiency compared to their non-newcomer peers, but grow faster, especially in their first two years. The purposes of this exploratory case study were twofold: (1) to understand the strengths and challenges teachers experienced when designing and delivering language interpretation tasks for use with second- and third-grade bilingual students, and (2) to ascertain what teachers perceived to be the benefits and drawbacks of the instructional approach for their students. The approach, Así se dice (That's how you say it!), asks Spanish- and English-speaking bilingual students to discuss, interpret, and translate text-based passages collaboratively. This culturally and linguistically relevant process engages students in metalinguistic and metacultural analyses incorporating reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Findings indicate that through careful scaffolding and opportunities to debrief, teachers can implement and reflect on innovative instructional approaches that are rooted in pedagogies of biliteracy, explicitly develop metalinguistic awareness and create hybrid spaces to disrupt language separation in dual language classrooms. From teacher reflections and classroom observations, we learned that the choice of passage content and its length influences successful implementation. Further, it is critical that teachers have done the translation prior to the lesson. Exploring parent, student, and teacher language moves is essential to develop and implement strategies that cultivate Spanish use in support of dual-language engagement. We used Lareau's concerted cultivation framework to explore language use at a K-8 dual-language immersion school. A case-study design integrating content analysis was used to analyze parent, teacher, and student interview and classroom observation data. Concerted cultivation of Spanish was evident across students' organization of daily life, language use, and institutional intervention. Parents and teachers' shared messaging revealed a synergistic dimension of concerted cultivation; serving as a model for supporting children's dual-language engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Spanish Dual Language (DL) programs are caught up in a school choice paradigm, marketed by schools as special features by which to lure prospective families. Out of concern that this approach does not position schools to serve the full breadth of Latina/o/x students, who possess the social, cultural and linguistic resources tied to Spanish language, we assumed a LatCrit lens to conduct a Critical Race Spatial Analysis of DL programs in relation to Latina/o/x and white populations at macro and micro levels. Findings demonstrate that, in terms of the linguistic, cultural and social resources necessary for DL programming, Chicago's Latina/o/x communities present CPS with the potential to implement far more DL programs than those currently available. Furthermore, CPS does not provide adequate access to DL programming for their large population of Latina/o/x students, and the geospatial proximity of a majority of programs to white populations suggests that CPS should interrogate who these programs are positioned to serve. Current research on cross-language transfer has focused primarily on literacy development. The present study extends the scope of existing research by focusing on argumentative reasoning, an important but under-research academic skill. A single-case study with a reversal design was conducted with four Chinese-English elementary students with the well-established Collaborative Reasoning (CR) discussion model. Data included transcripts of the lessons and discussions, surveys, and interviews. Cross- language transfer of argumentative reasoning was observed at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels and varied with factors identified in previous research on biliteracy development. In this ethnographic case study, border theory was used to analyze how a Guatemalan/Mexican student of Indigenous descent confronted borders in a second-grade, Spanish-English dual-language (DL) classroom in the U.S. The student faced structural/institutional borders that affected all the DL participants or Latinx students and social borders specific to himself and other students of Indigenous descent. He initially coped by not speaking English and assuming a Mexican identity. With his teacher's support, he crossed social borders by speaking English, taking pride in his Indigeneity, and using Q'anjob'al. While scholars across a range of disciplines challenge the idea that bi/multilinguals have separate linguistic repertoires, monolingual expectations are common in bilingual education. Using elements of case study design and discourse analysis, I explore translanguaging as both a dynamic linguistic practice and a linguistically sustaining pedagogy to develop biliteracy in a fourth-grade bilingual poetry writing workshop. As a linguistic practice, the teacher and her students utilized receptive and productive translanguaging for a variety of purposes, such as to emphasize meaning and establish group membership. It is important to note that the term receptive translanguaging does not necessarily counter the unitary view of bi/multilingualism, rather it focuses on the social duality of language and it acknowledges how bilinguals use their full linguistic repertoire. In terms of pedagogy, I found that the teacher modeled translanguaging in whole class mini lessons and one-on-one conferences, highlighted translingual mentor texts and encouraged students to write translingually for their bi/multilingual families. This work is significant to the field of bilingual education as it highlights how bi/multilinguals language in school settings when there are no linguistic constraints and provides specific examples of translanguaging pedagogy. Teaching for equity with bilingual learners means building on students' linguistic strengths. This critical qualitative self-study explored how pre-service bilingual teachers developed ideology and pedagogy through a structured, holistic approach to writing instruction. Seven bilingual teacher candidates implemented a strategic Transliteracy approach to writing instruction, observing student assets and teaching cross-linguistically. Data includes semi-structured interviews and coursework. Findings showed teachers' ideological and pedagogical clarity co-developed as they implemented a holistic biliteracy practice. Implications for bilingual teacher education include (1) providing opportunities for teacher candidates to practice assets-based formative assessment and instruction; (2) employing a holistic biliteracy orientation; and (3) creating spaces to develop ideology and pedagogy that dismantles harmful monolingual paradigms, practices, and norms. The goal of this investigation was to address gaps in the literature regarding dual-language learning in children with Down syndrome (DS). The investigators examined the outcomes of a dual-language narrative intervention and cross-language transfer in a bilingual (Spanish-English) adolescent with DS. Results revealed moderate to large effects in narrative macrostructural skills, with bi-directional cross-language transfer, and no secondary change in microstructural skills. With gains in both languages, findings indicated that the participant benefitted from the dual-language condition, thereby contributing to the emerging evidence base needed to support professionals and families as they engage in instructional decision-making for children with DS. Shared book reading has positive impacts on language development, yet how it is navigated with young dual-language learning (DLL) children is less well understood. This study explored differences in shared reading practices among families raising Spanish/English DLL children with a survey for primary caregivers (n = 96) of DLLs between 2–5 years old. Respondents self-reported their household primary language and were categorized into three groups: Spanish primary (SPL), English primary (EPL), or both languages primary (BPL). Respondents answered questions about their own language proficiency, their children's exposure to English and Spanish, frequency of shared reading in each language, and parent and child language preferences and practices involving the use of both languages during reading. Results indicated that reported household primary language corresponded to language dominance reportedly experienced by the child, and shared reading frequency in each language is impacted by household primary language. Across primary language groups, there were not significant differences in the use of beneficial dialogic reading strategies. Additionally, caregivers' reported practices around the use of both languages while reading were diverse within each group, and warrant further inquiry. In this two-year ethnographic study, we explored engineering teaching and learning in fourth-grade, dual language (DL) classrooms. We discuss the biliterate disciplinary practices in these classrooms, examining data (field notes, interviews, artifacts, audio, and video recordings) gathered at a school on the US-Mexico border. Our purpose is to highlight how DL teachers collaborated to create an inquiry-based learning environment that fostered biliteracy as a resource for adding new disciplinary literacy practices. They designed experiences where their emergent bilingual students were able to leverage their existing biliterate repertoires to engage in and learn engineering design. Building on recent practice-oriented and multimodal shifts in bilingual education and content area education, we propose a disciplinary perspective on translanguaging that leverages the synergy between translanguaging and contemporary conceptualizations of content learning. Specifically, we propose that a disciplinary perspective consists of two features: (a) connecting translanguaging practices to disciplinary practices and (b) framing multimodality as essential to constructing disciplinary meaning. We illustrate these features using examples from our research in sixth-grade STEM classrooms. We argue that a disciplinary perspective could address persistent challenges of developing and researching translanguaging pedagogies and contribute to fostering equitable learning experiences for multilingual students. This phenomenological study follows an asset-based approach to understand how Latinx families utilize their cultural wealth in their children's education, and how teachers activate families' capitals to support their engagement. Data collected through focus groups reveal that the seven Latinx parents in the study use aspirational capital by communicating high expectations to their children; social capital by building relationships with teachers; and resistant capital by prioritizing their children's heritage language. The five participating teachers activate families' cultural wealth by knowing their background; communicating high expectations; sanctioning culturally sustaining spaces; modeling strategies for at-home support; and creating a safe school environment. This study examined the biliterate writing abilities and development of 25 Spanish-English Latinx children over the course of their first-grade year. As part of their regular classroom instruction, each student created 16 writing compositions over the year, once a month, eight entries each in Spanish and English. Using embedded mixed methods and a holistic view of bilingualism, nearly 400 writing samples were analyzed for various aspects of writing development: ideas expressed, spelling, punctuation use, and grammar, as well as cross-language transfers. Through this analysis, the authors documented the children's biliterate writing growth across time, although growth was not always linear across languages or in all writing abilities. In the beginning of the year, children demonstrated greater abilities in Spanish than English, but as the year progressed, abilities across languages were comparable.
