In the present study, we investigated expression pattern of Cholecystokinin type A receptor (CCKAR) in relation to its commonly studied polymorphism (rs1800857, T/C) in gallstone disease (GSD) patients and controls. A total of 502 subjects (272 GSD and 230 controls) were enrolled, and genotyping was performed by evaluating restriction fragments of PstI digested DNA. There is a paucity of data on the prevalence of elevated homocysteine and its relation with plasma folate and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene in the population of North India. This study evaluates MTHFR gene polymorphism and its relationship with plasma homocysteine and folate levels in a healthy North Indian population. The age of the 200 subjects included in this study was in the range 18-73 (mean 39.4) years. The plasma homocysteine level was elevated in 56.5%, and the plasma folate level was low in 49.5% of the subjects. Heterozygous MTHFR gene polymorphism (CT) was present in 15.5%, and homozygous (TT) in 3.5% of the subjects. Age, diet, and MTHFR gene polymorphisms were related to homocysteine level. All the subjects with the TT and 79% with the CT genotype had a high level of plasma homocysteine, whereas 51% with the CC genotype had a high homocysteine level. After adjustment for the effect of covariates, however, homocysteine was not related to MTHFR gene polymorphism.

This study was designed to find out whether marrow sensitivity due to γ exposure and experimentally induced anemia in age-matched adult rats is entirely strain specific or is a combination of both strain and Hb genotype. Eight strains of inbred and outbred rats comprising AA and BB types were examined. The data indicate that there is a relationship between marrow sensitivity and Hb genotypes in response to erythropoietic stress caused by three techniques.

Cytochrome oxidase was purified twentyfold from mitochondria of seedlings of wheat genotypes 28, 31 MS, and 31 MS/28. The enzyme of the hybrid exceeded in activity the parental enzymes. Mixtures of cytochrome oxidase of the parents exhibited complementation in that they approached the activity of the hybrid cytochrome oxidase. Hybrid mitochondria also exhibited heterosis in NADH: cytochrome c reductase activity. Complementation by parent mitochondria was observed for this enzyme also. The Michaelis constant of cytochrome oxidase and NADH: cytochrome reductase was markedly less in the hybrid and the mixture than in the parents. Difference spectra revealed the following: strain 28 had cytochromes a and b but was deficient in cytochrome c; strain 31 MS had cytochromes b and c but no a; the hybrid had all three cytochromes, as did the mixture. The relationship of cytochromes to heterosis and complementation is considered.

Mitochondria of young seedlings of wheat genotypes 28, 31MS, and 31MS |MX 28 differed in total lipid and phospholipid. Hybrid mitochondria had more lipid and phospholipid than did the parents, and the three genotypes differed in fatty acid composition of the phospholipid fraction. Hybrid mitochondria exhibited heterosis in cytochrome oxidase activity. Although depletion of phospholipid greatly reduced cytochrome oxidase activity in hybrid mitochondria, the heterotic property was preserved. Regulatory aspects of lipid and phospholipid in mitochondria of the hybrid and complementing parental mixture are considered.
