Abstract

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii's restricted ability to develop nonphotochemical quenching upon illumination is due to state transitions instead of DeltapH-driven high-energy state quenching, qE. The reasons attributed are the insufficient electrochemical proton gradient generated on illumination, to promote fluorescence quenching and the intrinsic decrease of the capacity to transduce the presence of a Deltaph into a quenching response.
