Artificial neural networks (ANNs) ability to learn, correct errors, and transform a large amount of raw data into beneficial medical decisions for treatment and care has increased in popularity for enhanced patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, this paper reviews the critical role of ANNs in providing valuable insights for patients' healthcare decisions and efficient disease diagnosis. We study different types of ANNs in the existing literature that advance ANNs' adaptation for complex applications. Specifically, we investigate ANNs' advances for predicting viral, cancer, skin, and COVID-19 diseases. Furthermore, we propose a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model called ConXNet, based on chest radiography images, to improve the detection accuracy of COVID-19 disease. ConXNet is trained and tested using a chest radiography image dataset obtained from Kaggle, achieving more than 97% accuracy and 98% precision, which is better than other existing state-of-the-art models, such as DeTraC, U-Net, COVID MTNet, and COVID-Net, having 93.1%, 94.10%, 84.76%, and 90% accuracy and 94%, 95%, 85%, and 92% precision, respectively. The results show that the ConXNet model performed significantly well for a relatively large dataset compared with the aforementioned models. Moreover, the ConXNet model reduces the time complexity by using dropout layers and batch normalization techniques. Finally, we highlight future research directions and challenges, such as the complexity of the algorithms, insufficient available data, privacy and security, and integration of biosensing with ANNs. The success of deep machine learning (DML) models in gaming and robotics has increased its trial in clinical and public healthcare solutions. In applying DML to healthcare problems, a special challenge of inadequate electrical energy and computing resources exists in regional and developing areas of the world. In this paper, we evaluate and report the computational and predictive performance design trade-offs for four candidate deep learning models that can be deployed for rapid malaria case finding. The goal is to maximise malaria detection accuracy while reducing computing resource and energy consumption. Based on our experimental results using a blood smear malaria test data set, the quantised versions of Basic Convolutional Neural Network (B-CNN) and MobileNetV2 have better malaria detection performance (up to 99% recall), lower memory usage (2MB 8-bit quantised model) and shorter inference time (33-95 microseconds on mobile phones) than VGG-19 fine-tuned and quantised models. Hence, we have implemented MobileNetV2 in our mobile application as it has even a lower memory requirement than B-CNN. Laboratory medicine plays a fundamental role in the detection, diagnosis and management of COVID-19 infection. Recent observations of the morphology of cells circulating in blood found the presence of particular reactive lymphocytes (COVID-19 RL) in some of the infected patients and demonstrated that it was an indicator of a better prognosis of the disease. Visual morphological analysis is time consuming, requires smear review by expert clinical pathologists, and is prone to subjectivity. This paper presents a convolutional neural network system designed for automatic recognition of COVID-19 RL. It is based on the Xception71 structure and is trained using images of blood cells from real infected patients. An experimental study is carried out with a group of 92 individuals. The input for the system is a set of images selected by the clinical pathologist from the blood smear of a patient. The output is the prediction whether the patient belongs to the group associated with better prognosis of the disease. A threshold is obtained for the classification system to predict that the smear belongs to this group. With this threshold, the experimental test shows excellent performance metrics: 98.3% sensitivity and precision, 97.1% specificity, and 97.8% accuracy. The system does not require costly calculations and can potentially be integrated into clinical practice to assist clinical pathologists in a more objective smear review for early prognosis. The end of 2019 could be mounted in a rudimentary framing of a new medical problem, which globally introduces into the discussion a fulminant outbreak of coronavirus, consequently spreading COVID-19 that conducted long-lived and persistent repercussions. Hence, the theme proposed to be solved arises from the field of medical imaging, where a pulmonary CT-based standardized reporting system could be addressed as a solution. The core of it focuses on certain impediments such as the overworking of doctors, aiming essentially to solve a classification problem using deep learning techniques, namely, if a patient suffers from COVID-19, viral pneumonia, or is healthy from a pulmonary point of view. The methodology's approach was a meticulous one, denoting an empirical character in which the initial stage, given using data processing, performs an extraction of the lung cavity from the CT scans, which is a less explored approach, followed by data augmentation. The next step is comprehended by developing a CNN in two scenarios, one in which there is a binary classification (COVID and non-COVID patients), and the other one is represented by a three-class classification. Moreover, viral pneumonia is addressed. To obtain an efficient version, architectural changes were gradually made, involving four databases during this process. Furthermore, given the availability of pre-trained models, the transfer learning technique was employed by incorporating the linear classifier from our own convolutional network into an existing model, with the result being much more promising. The experimentation encompassed several models including MobileNetV1, ResNet50, DenseNet201, VGG16, and VGG19. Through a more in-depth analysis, using the CAM technique, MobilneNetV1 differentiated itself via the detection accuracy of possible pulmonary anomalies. Interestingly, this model stood out as not being among the most used in the literature. As a result, the following values of evaluation metrics were reached: loss (0.0751), accuracy (0.9744), precision (0.9758), recall (0.9742), AUC (0.9902), and F1 score (0.9750), from 1161 samples allocated for each of the three individual classes. Cough-based diagnosis for respiratory diseases (RDs) using artificial intelligence (AI) has attracted considerable attention, yet many existing studies overlook confounding variables in their predictive models. These variables can distort the relationship between cough recordings (input data) and RD status (output variable), leading to biased associations and unrealistic model performance. To address this gap, we propose the Bias-Free Network (RBF-Net), an end-to-end solution that effectively mitigates the impact of confounders in the training data distribution. RBF-Net ensures accurate and unbiased RD diagnosis features, emphasizing its relevance by incorporating a COVID-19 dataset in this study. This approach aims to enhance the reliability of AI-based RD diagnosis models by navigating the challenges posed by confounding variables. A hybrid of a Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks is proposed for the feature encoder module of RBF-Net. An additional bias predictor is incorporated in the classification scheme to formulate a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (c-GAN) that helps in decorrelating the impact of confounding variables from RD prediction. The merit of RBF-Net is demonstrated by comparing classification performance with a State-of-The-Art (SoTA) Deep Learning (DL) model (CNN-LSTM) after training on different unbalanced COVID-19 data sets, created by using a large-scale proprietary cough data set. RBF-Net proved its robustness against extremely biased training scenarios by achieving test set accuracies of 84.1%, 84.6%, and 80.5% for the following confounding variables—gender, age, and smoking status, respectively. A machine learning method for classifying lung ultrasound is proposed here to provide a point of care tool for supporting a safe, fast, and accurate diagnosis that can also be useful during a pandemic such as SARS-CoV-2. Given the advantages (e.g., safety, speed, portability, cost-effectiveness) provided by the ultrasound technology over other examinations (e.g., X-ray, computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging), our method was validated on the largest public lung ultrasound dataset. Focusing on both accuracy and efficiency, our solution is based on an efficient adaptive ensembling of two EfficientNet-b0 models reaching 100% of accuracy, which, to our knowledge, outperforms the previous state-of-the-art models by at least 5%. The complexity is restrained by adopting specific design choices: ensembling with an adaptive combination layer, ensembling performed on the deep features, and minimal ensemble using two weak models only. In this way, the number of parameters has the same order of magnitude of a single EfficientNet-b0 and the computational cost (FLOPs) is reduced at least by 20%, doubled by parallelization. Moreover, a visual analysis of the saliency maps on sample images of all the classes of the dataset reveals where an inaccurate weak model focuses its attention versus an accurate one. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced social and economic changes that are still affecting our lives. The coronavirus is proinflammatory, it is replicating, and it is quickly spreading. The most affected organ is the lung, and the evolution of the disease can degenerate very rapidly from the early phase, also known as mild to moderate and even severe stages, where the percentage of recovered patients is very low. Therefore, a fast and automatic method to detect the disease stages for patients who underwent a computer tomography investigation can improve the clinical protocol. Transfer learning is used do tackle this issue, mainly by decreasing the computational time. The dataset is composed of images from public databases from 118 patients and new data from 55 patients collected during the COVID-19 spread in Romania in the spring of 2020. Even if the disease detection by the computerized tomography scans was studied using deep learning algorithms, to our knowledge, there are no studies related to the multiclass classification of the images into pulmonary damage stages. This could be helpful for physicians to automatically establish the disease severity and decide on the proper treatment for patients and any special surveillance, if needed. An evaluation study was completed by considering six different pre-trained CNNs. The results are encouraging, assuring an accuracy of around 87%.
