Nanocomposites have been widely used in many important areas due to their particular physical/chemical properties; however, just though a simple technology, endowing multiple functions into a single nanomaterial for realizing their multifunctional applications is still a challenge. Here, we report a robust method for the facile synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites via using tannin-coated phenol-formaldehyde resin nanospheres (TA-PFRN) as silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) carriers. The thickness of the tannin coating is readily tuned from 50 to 320 nm by regulating the concentration of tannin added. Under the optimal conditions, the TA-PFRN has a 23.8 wt % of Ag NPs loading capacity with only 17.2 nm Ag NP layers. Consequently, the novel TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites possess multiple functions and integrated characteristics. As catalysts, the catalytic efficiency of TA-PFRN@Ag is nearly 6 times higher than that of the PFRN@Ag. As highly effective free radical initiators, TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites can trigger ultrafast acrylic acid (AA)/acrylamide (AM) polymerization at room temperature (in only a few minutes). As nano-reinforced fillers, the addition of 0.04 wt % nanocomposites can improve the tensile strength of PVA film from 60 to 153.2 MPa. In addition, the nanocomposites can also serve as antibacterial agents, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ); as antiultraviolet agents, the presence of TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites endows the film/hydrogel materials excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding. This work provides a novel strategy for the green synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites that show promising applications in catalysis, nanomaterials, and biomedicine.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer excellent mechanical properties. However, measuring the strength by performing reliable experiments at the nanoscale is challenging. In this paper, we model Iβ crystalline cellulose using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. Taking the fibril twist into account, structural changes and hydrogen-bonding characteristics of CNCs during the tensile test are inspected and the failure mechanism of CNCs is analyzed down to the scale of individual bonds. The C4-O4 glycosidic bond is found to be responsible for the failure of CNCs. Finally, the effect of strain rate on ultimate properties is analyzed and a nonlinear model is used to predict the ultimate strength of 9.2 GPa and ultimate strain of 8.5% at a 1 s -1 strain rate. This study sheds light on the applications of cellulose in nanocomposites and further modeling of cellulose nanofibres.

This article focuses on the formation of the surface tension torque (STT) phenomenon close to the dry-line boundary layer during evaporation of the liquid phase of a solution casted shape-anisotropic nanoparticle suspension (here, cellulose nanowhisker (CNW)) or dissolved polymer (here, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) and its effects on self-assembly of the cellulose nanocrystals and polymer chains. The results confirm that the STT tends to align both the CNWs and the PVA chains tangential to the dry-line boundary layer. By careful control of the advancement of the dry-line, achieving special linear and curved patterns of both the CNWs and the PVA chains proportional to the mold position and geometry is possible. The STT phenomenon is explained and simplified in terms of a physical model. Understanding of the STT phenomenon and its effects on the alignment and self-assembly of the CNWs and PVA chains is necessary especially when achieving alignment using a modulated external magnetic or electric field is desired. The STT is safe, inexpensive, easy, and efficient, and can be a good alternative to the magnetic and electric field orientation methods.

Interest in xylan-rich hemicelluloses (XH) film is growing, and efforts have been made to prepare XH films with improved mechanical properties. This work described an effective approach to produce nanocomposite films with enhanced mechanical properties by incorporation of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) into XH. Aqueous dispersions of XH (64-75 wt %), sorbitol (16-25 wt %), and CNF (0-20 wt %) were cast at a temperature of 23 °C and 50% relative humidity. The surface morphology of the films was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thermal properties and crystal structure of the films were evaluated by thermal analysis (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface of XH films with and without CNF was composed primarily of nanonodules, and CNFs were embedded in the XH matrix. Freeze-dried XH powder was amorphous, whereas the films with and without CNF showed a distinct peak at around 2θ = 18°, which suggested that XH molecules aggregated or reordered in the casting solution or during water evaporation. Furthermore, the nanocomposite films had improved thermal stability. XH film with 25 wt % plasticizer (sorbitol, based on dry XH weight) showed poor mechanical properties, whereas incorporation of CNF (5-20 wt %, based on the total dry mixture) into the film resulted in enhanced mechanical properties due to the high aspect ratio and mechanical strength of CNF and strong interactions between CNF and XH matrix. This effective method makes it possible to produce hemicellulose-based biomaterials of high quality.

Nanocomposites were developed by cross-linking cellulose nanowhiskers with poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) and polyethylene glycol. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies showed cross-linking occurs between the matrix and cellulose nanowhiskers via an esterification reaction. Proton NMR T(2) relaxation experiments provided information on the mobility of the polymer chains within the matrix, which can be related to the structure of the cross-linked nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was found to consist of mobile chain portions between cross-linked junction points and immobilized chain segments near or at those junction points, whose relative fraction increased upon further incorporation of cellulose nanowhiskers. Atomic force microscopy images showed a homogeneous dispersion of nanowhiskers in the matrix even at high nanowhisker content, which can be attributed to cross-linking of the nanowhiskers in the matrix. Relative humidity conditions were found to affect the mechanical properties of the composites negatively while the nanowhiskers content had a positive effect. It is expected that the cross-links between the matrix and the cellulose nanowhiskers trap the nanowhiskers in the cross-linked network, preventing nanowhisker aggregation subsequently producing cellulose nanocomposites with unique mechanical behaviors. The results show that in situ cross-linking of cellulose nanowhiskers with a matrix polymer is a promising route to obtain nanocomposites with well dispersed nanowhiskers, tailored nanostructure, and mechanical performance.

In the present work, nanowhiskers and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) both extracted from sisal were used to reinforce polycaprolactone (PCL). We report the influence of the nanoparticle's nature on the mechanical and thermal properties of the ensuing nanocomposites. The surface of both the nanoparticles was chemically modified to improve their compatibilization with the polymeric matrix. N-Octadecyl isocyanate (C18H37NCO) was used as the grafting agent. PCL nanocomposite films reinforced with sisal whiskers or MFC (raw or chemically modified) were prepared by film casting. The thermal behavior (Tg, Tm, Tc, and degree of crystallinity) and the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites in both the linear and the nonlinear range were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile tests, respectively. Significant differences were reported according to the nature of the nanoparticle and amount of nanofillers used as reinforcement. It was also proved that the chemical treatment clearly improves the ultimate properties of the nanocomposites.
