Sugar-based polyesters derived from sorbitol and isohexides were obtained via solvent-free enzymatic catalysis. Pendant hydroxyl groups, coming from the sorbitol units, were present along the polyester backbone, whereas the two isohexides, namely, isomannide and isoidide dimethyl ester monomers, were selected to introduce rigidity into the polyester chains. The feasibility of incorporating isomannide as a diol compared to the isoidide dimethyl ester as acyl-donor via lipase-catalyzed polycondensation was investigated. The presence of bicyclic units resulted in enhanced Tg with respect to the parent sorbitol-containing polyester lacking isohexides. The different capability of the two isohexides to boost the thermal properties confirmed the more flexible character provided by the isoidide diester derivative. Solvent-borne coatings were prepared by cross-linking the sugar-based polyester polyols with polyisocyanates. The increased rigidity of the obtained sugar-based polyester polyols led to an enhancement in hardness of the resulting coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ionic complexes of microbially produced poly(beta,L-malic acid) and alkyltrimethylammonium surfactants with linear alkyl chains containing even numbers of carbon atoms from 14 up to 22, were investigated. Complexes with a stoichiometric or nearly stoichiometric composition were prepared by precipitation from equimolar mixtures of aqueous solutions of the two components. All complexes were found to adopt supramolecular stratified structures made of alternating layers of poly(beta,L-malate) and surfactant with a periodicity on the length scale of 3-5 nm, which increased proportionally to the length of the polymethylene chain. In these complexes, alkyl side chains with more than 16 carbon atoms were partially crystallized showing reversible melting at temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees C. After melting, a smectic LC phase that isotropicized at approximately 100 degrees C was observed for all of the complexes. Conformational and dimensional changes taking place in the complexes by effect of heating were analyzed by (13)C CP-MAS NMR and powder X-ray diffraction.

The ability of microbally produced poly(gamma,d-glutamic acid) to form stable polyelectrolyte-opposite charged surfactant complexes was investigated. A sonicated sample of polyacid with a molecular weight about 10(5) Da and a content of d enantiomer higher than 90% was used in this study. Nearly stoichiometric complexes of poly(gamma,d-glutamate) anions and alkyltrimethylammonium cations bearing linear alkyl chains with even numbers of carbon atoms from 12 up to 22 were "synthesized" by precipitation from equimolar mixtures of aqueous solutions of the two components. All complexes were found to adopt stratified supramolecular structures made of alternating layers of poly(gamma,d-glutamate) and surfactant with a periodicity increasing from 3.2 up to 4.3 nm according to the length of the alkyl side chain. No definite evidence indicative of the conformation adopted by the main chain in these complexes could be afforded. In all cases, the alkyl chains are in an extended conformation and oriented normal or nearly normal to the layer planes. Polymethylene chains with more than 16 carbon atoms were partially crystallized in the complexes in a separated paraffinic phase, whereas no crystallinity was detected for shorter lengths. The crystallized paraffinic phases were found to melt reversibly at temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees C. This process was found to happen with a concomitant expansion-contraction that amounts between 2 and 8% of the long period of the structure but without significant alteration of the layered arrangement.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations have been used to study the structure of an intermediate thermal phase of poly(alpha-octadecyl gamma,D-glutamate). This is a comblike poly(gamma-peptide) able to adopt a biphasic structure that has been described as a layered arrangement of backbone helical rods immersed in a paraffinic pool of polymethylene side chains. Simulations were performed at two different temperatures (348 and 363 K), both of them above the melting point of the paraffinic phase, using the configurational bias MC algorithm. Results indicate that layers are constituted by a side-by-side packing of 17/5 helices. The organization of the interlayer paraffinic region is described in atomistic terms by examining the torsional angles and the end-to-end distances for the octadecyl side chains. Comparison with previously reported comblike poly(beta-peptide)s revealed significant differences in the organization of the alkyl side chains.

The stereochemical microstructure and crystalline structure of nearly racemic poly(alpha-ethyl gamma,DL-glutamate) obtained by esterification of biosynthetic poly(gamma-glutamic acid) were examined by NMR, DSC, and powder X-ray diffraction. The two enantiomerically pure poly(alpha-ethyl gamma-glutamate)s, as well as the racemic stereocopolymers with random and alternating microstructure, were prepared by chemical synthesis and studied in parallel to help in the interpretation of the data. The (13)C NMR analysis revealed that biosynthetic poly(alpha-ethyl gamma,DL-glutamate) consists of a block stereocopolymer accompanied by minor amounts of a mixture of the two optically pure homopolymers. The polymer is crystalline, with a degree of crystallinity and crystal structure essentially similar to those displayed by the optically pure polymers but clearly different from the alternating copolymer. Conversely, the racemic stereocopolymer with a random microstructure prepared by chemical synthesis is amorphous. The crystal structure of the racemic mixture of the D- and L-homopolymers seems to be very close to that of the biosynthetic stereocopolymer, although some indications suggesting the existence of a stereocomplex were found.
