Honeycomb plates, due to their multi-cavity structure, exhibit excellent mechanical properties and sound insulation. Previous studies have demonstrated that altering the cell size and arrangement of honeycomb structures impacts their acoustic performance. Based on these findings, this study developed a wallboard structure with enhanced sound insulation by filling the cavities with paper fiber/cement facesheets and designing a stacked core structure. Through the reverberation chamber–anechoic chamber sound insulation experiment under 100–6300 Hz excitation and conducting orthogonal experiments from three dimensions, it was found that: (1) Compared to no filling, the filling with straw and glazed hollow bead can increase the sound transmission loss (STL) by more than 50% in the frequency bandwidth above 2000 Hz. This indicates that both types of fillings can significantly enhance the sound insulation performance of the honeycomb structure without a significant increase in economic costs. (2) The increase in paper fiber/cement facesheets improves the STL across the entire experimental bandwidth, with a maximum improvement exceeding 70%. This structural design not only offers superior sound insulation performance but also better suits practical engineering applications. (3) Increasing the number of core stacking units (from one to three), taking straw-filled paper honeycomb-core wallboards as an example, effectively increased the STL bandwidth. (4) This test enriches the application of honeycomb plates in sound insulation. Introducing fiber paper fiber/cement facesheets and eco-friendly, low-cost straw improves sound insulation and enhances the strength of honeycomb, making them more suitable for construction, particularly as non-load-bearing structures. The load-adaptive behavior of the muscles in the human musculoskeletal system offers great potential for minimizing resource and energy requirements in many technical systems, especially in drive technology and robotics. However, the lack of knowledge about suitable technical linear actuators that can reproduce the load-adaptive behavior of biological muscles in technology is a major reason for the lack of successful implementation of this biological principle. In this paper, therefore, the different types of linear actuators are investigated. The focus is particularly on artificial muscles and rope pulls. The study is based on literature, on the one hand, and on two physical demonstrators in the form of articulated robots, on the other hand. The studies show that ropes are currently the best way to imitate the load-adaptive behavior of the biological model in technology. This is especially illustrated in the context of this paper by the discussion of different advantages and disadvantages of the technical linear actuators, where ropes, among other things, have a good mechanical and control behavior, which is very advantageous for use in an adaptive system. Finally, the next steps for future research are outlined to conclude how ropes can be used as linear actuators to transfer load-adaptive lightweight design into technical applications. Dual humanoid robot collaborative control systems possess better flexibility and adaptability in complex environments due to their similar structures to humans. This paper adopts a distributed model predictive controller based on the leader–follower approach to address the collaborative transportation control issue of dual humanoid robots. In the dual-robot collaborative control system, network latency issues may arise due to unstable network conditions, affecting the consistency of dual-robot collaboration. To solve this issue, a communication protocol was constructed through socket communication for dual-robot collaborative consistency, thereby resolving the problem of consistency in dual humanoid robot collaboration. Additionally, due to the complex structure of humanoid robots, there are deficiencies in position tracking accuracy during movement. To address the poor accuracy in position tracking, this paper proposes a distributed model predictive control that considers historical cumulative error, thus enhancing the position tracking accuracy of dual-robot collaborative control. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening, genetic disease that affects approximately 145,000 people worldwide. CF causes a dehydrated mucus layer in the lungs, leading to damaging infection and inflammation that eventually result in death. Nanoparticles (NPs), drug delivery vehicles intended for inhalation, have become a recent source of interest for treating CF and CF-related conditions, and many formulations have been created thus far. This paper is intended to provide an overview of CF and the effect it has on the lungs, the barriers in using NP drug delivery vehicles for treatment, and three common material class choices for these NP formulations: metals, polymers, and lipids. The materials to be discussed include gold, silver, and iron oxide metallic NPs; polyethylene glycol, chitosan, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid, and alginate polymeric NPs; and lipid-based NPs. The novelty of this review comes from a less specific focus on nanoparticle examples, with the focus instead being on the general theory behind material function, why or how a material might be used, and how it may be preferable to other materials used in treating CF. Finally, this paper ends with a short discussion of the two FDA-approved NPs for treatment of CF-related conditions and a recommendation for the future usage of NPs in people with Cystic Fibrosis (pwCF). This paper introduces a novel approach to robotic assistance in bottle opening using the dual-arm robot TIAGo++. The solution enhances accessibility by addressing the needs of individuals with injuries or disabilities who may require help with common manipulation tasks. The aim of this paper is to propose a method involving vision, manipulation, and learning techniques to effectively address the task of bottle opening. The process begins with the acquisition of bottle and cap positions using an RGB-D camera and computer vision. Subsequently, the robot picks the bottle with one gripper and grips the cap with the other, each by planning safe trajectories. Then, the opening procedure is executed via a position and force control scheme that ensures both grippers follow the unscrewing path defined by the cap thread. Within the control loop, force sensor information is employed to control the vertical axis movements, while gripper rotation control is achieved through a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm trained to determine the optimal angle increments for rotation. The results demonstrate the successful training of the learning agent. As the capacity of individual offshore wind turbines increases, prolonged downtime (due to maintenance or faults) will result in significant economic losses. This necessitates enhancing the efficiency of vessel operation and maintenance (O&M) to reduce O&M costs. Existing research mostly focuses on planning O&M schemes for individual vessels. However, there exists a research gap in the scientific scheduling for state-of-the-art O&M vessels. To bridge this gap, this paper considers the use of an advanced O&M vessel in the O&M process, taking into account the downtime costs associated with wind turbine maintenance and repair incidents. A mathematical model is constructed with the objective of minimizing overall O&M expenditure. Building upon this formulation, this paper introduces a novel restructuring particle swarm optimization which is tailed with a bespoke encoding and decoding strategy, designed to yield an optimized solution that aligns with the intricate demands of the problem at hand. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can achieve significant savings of 28.85% in O&M costs. This paper reviews how multifunctioning joints produce highly agile limbs in animals with lessons for robotics. One of the key reasons why animals are so fast and agile is that they have multifunctioning joints in their limbs. The multifunctioning joints lead to a high degree of compactness which then leads to a host of benefits such as low mass, low moment of inertia and low drag. This paper presents three case studies of multifunctioning joints—the human wrist joint, knee joint and foot joints—in order to identify how multifunctioning is achieved and what lessons can be learned for robotics. It also reviews the multifunctioning nature of muscle which plays an important role in joint actuation. A key finding is that multifunctioning is achieved through various means: multiple degrees of freedom, multifunctioning parts, over-actuation and reconfiguration. In addition, multifunctioning is achieved through highly sophisticated layouts with high levels of integration and fine-tuning. Muscle also makes an important contribution to animal agility by performing multiple functions including providing shape, protection and heat. The paper reviews progress in achieving multifunctioning in robot joints particularly for the wrist, knee and foot. Whilst there has been some progress in creating multifunctioning robotic joints, there is still a large gap between the performance of animal and robotic joints. The biological system is not a perfect system, but it is a relatively complete system. It is difficult to realize the lower power consumption and high parallelism that characterize biological systems if lower-level information pathways are ignored. In this paper, we focus on the K, M and P pathways of visual signal processing from the retina to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). We model the visual system at a fine-grained level to ensure efficient information transmission while minimizing energy use. We also implement a circuit-level distributed parallel computing model on FPGAs. The results show that we are able to transfer information with low energy consumption and high parallelism. The Artix-7 family of xc7a200tsbv484-1 FPGAs can reach a maximum frequency of 200 MHz and a maximum parallelism of 600, and a single receptive field model consumes only 0.142 W of power. Catch fish optimization algorithm (CFOA) is a newly proposed meta-heuristic algorithm based on human behaviors. CFOA shows better performance on multiple test functions and clustering problems. However, CFOA shows poor performance in some cases, and there is still room for improvement in convergence accuracy, getting rid of local traps, and so on. To further enhance the performance of CFOA, a multi-strategy improved catch fish optimization algorithm (MICFOA) is proposed in this paper. In the exploration phase, we propose a Lévy-based differential independent search strategy to enhance the global search capability of the algorithm while minimizing the impact on the convergence speed. Secondly, in the exploitation phase, a weight-balanced selection mechanism is used to maintain population diversity, enhance the algorithm's ability to get rid of local optima during the search process, and effectively boost the convergence accuracy. Furthermore, the structure of CFOA is also modified in this paper. A fishermen position replacement strategy is added at the end of the algorithm as a way to strengthen the robustness of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of MICFOA, a comprehensive comparison with nine other metaheuristic algorithms is performed on the 10/30/50/100 dimensions of the CEC 2017 test functions and the 10/20 dimensions of the CEC2022 test functions. Statistical experiments show that MICFOA has more significant dominance in numerical optimization problems, and its overall performance outperforms the CFOA, PEOA, TLBO, COA, ARO, EDO, YDSE, and other state-of-the-art algorithms such as LSHADE, JADE, IDE-EDA, and APSM-jSO. Biomimicry creates designs inspired by nature and uses ecological benchmarks to assess their sustainability. It is believed that biomimicry can help society produce and consume in more sustainable ways, as well as address some of the key challenges facing the world today. However, research into the applications of and possible barriers to using biomimicry for creating more sustainable Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) projects is still limited. This paper addresses this gap by undertaking and analysing twelve semi-structured interviews with leading global experts and practitioners in the field of biomimicry as applied to the built environment industry. The study identifies substantial potential in the use of biomimicry in AEC projects, including the following: adopting circular approaches; enhancing interactions between human and natural infrastructure; optimising material and energy use; recycling and re-use of materials; reducing time and costs; plus more collaborative and interdisciplinary working. However, a wide range of multifaceted barriers also exist that are currently hindering the exploration and exploitation of this potential, including the following: lack of knowledge; insufficient research and testing at the scale of AEC projects; fragmentation, poor communication and traditional nature of the industry; perception of high risks and costs; as well as outdated and unsuitable legislation and planning processes. One of the researchers' concerns in structural engineering is to control the dynamic behavior of structures efficiently. The TMD (tuned mass damper) is one of the effective methods of controlling the vibration of structures, and various numerical techniques have been proposed to find the optimal parameters of the TMD. This paper develops a new explicit formula to derive the optimal parameters of the TMD of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) structure under seismic load using a genetic algorithm (GA). In addition, the state-space model and the H2 norm function are used to identify the optimal frequency ratio and damping ratio of the TMD that minimize the overall vibration energy of the structure. The MATLAB curve fitting toolbox is used for the explicit formula proposal, and the validity of the proposed formula is verified through multidimensional performance verification technique. Finally, the TMD parameters of the SDOF structure are applied to the multi-degrees of freedom (MDOF) structure to compare and analyze with the existing research results, and the results of the explicit formula proposed in this paper are confirmed to be excellent. This paper can suggest a new direction for determining the optimal TMD parameters using a GA and can be effectively applied to vibration control problems of various structures. The question "How does it work" has motivated many scientists. Through the study of natural phenomena and behaviors, many intelligence algorithms have been proposed to solve various optimization problems. This paper aims to offer an informative guide for researchers who are interested in tackling optimization problems with intelligence algorithms. First, a special neural network was comprehensively discussed, and it was called a zeroing neural network (ZNN). It is especially intended for solving time-varying optimization problems, including origin, basic principles, operation mechanism, model variants, and applications. This paper presents a new classification method based on the performance index of ZNNs. Then, two classic bio-inspired algorithms, a genetic algorithm and a particle swarm algorithm, are outlined as representatives, including their origin, design process, basic principles, and applications. This paper considers the design, manufacture, and testing of a prototype "soft–stiff" worm-inspired robot referred to herein, as the PneumaticallyActuated PeristaLtic Advancing Modular (PALAM) robot. The robot has a modular structure, mimicking the segmented nature of earthworms, and each segment is individually actuated by a set of three pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). The PAMs contract when inflated by pressurised air, generating a pulling force and fulfilling the role of biological muscles in the robot. The PAMs are made from the elastomer silicone rubber, which affords the robot flexibility and enables a wide range of real-life applications. A control-system is designed which can inflate any PAM on demand, and hence replicate the peristaltic motion of earthworms in the PALAM robot. Finally, this paper discusses a successful, low-cost, and widely accessible approach for the manufacture of the PAMs utilised herein. The PAMs can be scaled dimensionally and made from different materials with varying mechanical properties and behaviours, meaning that they are suitable for use in a wide range of robotics applications. When humanoid robots work in human environments, they are prone to falling. However, when there are objects around that can be utilized, humanoid robots can leverage them to achieve balance. To address this issue, this paper established the state equation of a robot using a variable height-inverted pendulum model and implemented online trajectory optimization using model predictive control. For the arms' optimal joint angles during movement, this paper took the distributed polygon method to calculate the arm postures. To ensure that the robot reached the target position smoothly and rapidly during its motion, this paper adopts a whole-body motion control approach, establishing a cost function for multi-objective constraints on the robot's movement. These constraints include whole-body dynamics, center of mass constraints, arm's end effector constraints, friction constraints, and center of pressure constraints. In the simulation, four sets of methods were compared, and the experimental results indicate that compared to free fall motion, adopting the method proposed in this paper reduces the maximum acceleration of the robot when it touches the wall to 69.1 m/s2, effectively reducing the impact force upon landing. Finally, in the actual experiment, we positioned the robot 0.85 m away from the wall and applied a forward pushing force. We observed that the robot could stably land on the wall, and the impact force was within the range acceptable to the robot, confirming the practical effectiveness of the proposed method. In order to cope with the problems of energy shortage and environmental pollution, carbon emissions need to be reduced and so the structure of the power grid is constantly being optimized. Traditional centralized power networks are not as capable of controlling and distributing non-renewable energy as distributed power grids. Therefore, the optimal dispatch of microgrids faces increasing challenges. This paper proposes a multi-strategy fusion slime mould algorithm (MFSMA) to tackle the microgrid optimal dispatching problem. Traditional swarm intelligence algorithms suffer from slow convergence, low efficiency, and the risk of falling into local optima. The MFSMA employs reverse learning to enlarge the search space and avoid local optima to overcome these challenges. Furthermore, adaptive parameters ensure a thorough search during the algorithm iterations. The focus is on exploring the solution space in the early stages of the algorithm, while convergence is accelerated during the later stages to ensure efficiency and accuracy. The salp swarm algorithm's search mode is also incorporated to expedite convergence. MFSMA and other algorithms are compared on the benchmark functions, and the test showed that the effect of MFSMA is better. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the MFSMA for function optimization, particularly in solving the 24 h microgrid optimal scheduling problem. This problem considers multiple energy sources such as wind turbines, photovoltaics, and energy storage. A microgrid model based on the MFSMA is established in this paper. Simulation of the proposed algorithm reveals its ability to enhance energy utilization efficiency, reduce total network costs, and minimize environmental pollution. The contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) A comprehensive microgrid dispatch model is proposed. (2) Environmental costs, operation and maintenance costs are taken into consideration. (3) Two modes of grid-tied operation and island operation are considered. This article explores the growing prominence of nature-inspired design philosophies in the context of sustainability and human well-being within the built environment and focuses on their application within laboratory buildings. Biomimicry and biophilic design are highlighted as key nature-inspired design approaches, with biomimicry drawing inspiration from nature for innovations and biophilic design promoting human health through enhancing the connection with the surrounding natural elements. This paper further discusses living building strategy as an emerging method for creating dynamic and adaptable spaces by prioritizing user experience through co-creation and focusing on sustainable and regenerative structures. The potential of integrating these approaches is emphasized using laboratory buildings as an example, with nature-inspired and living laboratories serving as models for future built environments that promote both environmental responsibility and a positive human experience. Accordingly, this work aims to investigate the design and construction of laboratory buildings based on nature-inspired design strategies and the living building concept. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a crucial function for most autonomous systems, allowing them to both navigate through and create maps of unfamiliar surroundings. Traditional Visual SLAM, also commonly known as VSLAM, relies on frame-based cameras and structured processing pipelines, which face challenges in dynamic or low-light environments. However, recent advancements in event camera technology and neuromorphic processing offer promising opportunities to overcome these limitations. Event cameras inspired by biological vision systems capture the scenes asynchronously, consuming minimal power but with higher temporal resolution. Neuromorphic processors, which are designed to mimic the parallel processing capabilities of the human brain, offer efficient computation for real-time data processing of event-based data streams. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent research efforts in integrating event cameras and neuromorphic processors into VSLAM systems. It discusses the principles behind event cameras and neuromorphic processors, highlighting their advantages over traditional sensing and processing methods. Furthermore, an in-depth survey was conducted on state-of-the-art approaches in event-based SLAM, including feature extraction, motion estimation, and map reconstruction techniques. Additionally, the integration of event cameras with neuromorphic processors, focusing on their synergistic benefits in terms of energy efficiency, robustness, and real-time performance, was explored. The paper also discusses the challenges and open research questions in this emerging field, such as sensor calibration, data fusion, and algorithmic development. This paper presents a software architecture to implement a task-motion planning system that can improve human-robot interactions by including social behavior when social robots provide services related to object manipulation to users. The proposed system incorporates four main modules: knowledge reasoning, perception, task planning, and motion planning for autonomous service. This system adds constraints to the robot motions based on the recognition of the object affordance from the perception module and environment states from the knowledge reasoning module. Thus, the system performs task planning by adjusting the goal of the task to be performed, and motion planning based on the functional aspects of the object, enabling the robot to execute actions consistent with social behavior to respond to the user's intent and the task environment. The system is verified through simulated experiments consisting of several object manipulation services such as handover and delivery. The results show that, by using the proposed system, the robot can provide different services depending on the situation, even if it performs the same tasks. The football team training algorithm (FTTA) is a new metaheuristic algorithm that was proposed in 2024. The FTTA has better performance but faces challenges such as poor convergence accuracy and ease of falling into local optimality due to limitations such as referring too much to the optimal individual for updating and insufficient perturbation of the optimal agent. To address these concerns, this paper presents an improved football team training algorithm called IFTTA. To enhance the exploration ability in the collective training phase, this paper proposes the fitness distance-balanced collective training strategy. This enables the players to train more rationally in the collective training phase and balances the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm. To further perturb the optimal agent in FTTA, a non-monopoly extra training strategy is designed to enhance the ability to get rid of the local optimum. In addition, a population restart strategy is then designed to boost the convergence accuracy and population diversity of the algorithm. The neural or mental simulation of actions is a powerful tool for allowing cognitive agents to develop Prospection Capabilities that are crucial for learning and memorizing key aspects of challenging skills. In previous studies, we developed an approach based on the animation of the redundant human body schema, based on the Passive Motion Paradigm (PMP). In this paper, we show that this approach can be easily extended to hyper-redundant serpentine robots as well as to hybrid configurations where the serpentine robot is functionally integrated with a traditional skeletal infrastructure. A simulation model is analyzed in detail, showing that it incorporates spatio-temporal features discovered in the biomechanical studies of biological hydrostats, such as the elephant trunk or octopus tentacles. It is proposed that such a generative internal model could be the basis for a cognitive architecture appropriate for serpentine robots, independent of the underlying design and control technologies. Although robotic hydrostats have received a lot of attention in recent decades, the great majority of research activities have been focused on the actuation/sensorial/material technologies that can support the design of hyper-redundant soft/serpentine robots, as well as the related control methodologies. This paper presents an enhanced crayfish optimization algorithm (ECOA). The ECOA includes four improvement strategies. Firstly, the Halton sequence was used to improve the population initialization of the crayfish optimization algorithm. Furthermore, the quasi opposition-based learning strategy is introduced to generate the opposite solution of the population, increasing the algorithm's searching ability. Thirdly, the elite factor guides the predation stage to avoid blindness in this stage. Finally, the fish aggregation device effect is introduced to increase the ability of the algorithm to jump out of the local optimal. This paper performed tests on the widely used IEEE CEC2019 test function set to verify the validity of the proposed ECOA method. The experimental results show that the proposed ECOA has a faster convergence speed, greater performance stability, and a stronger ability to jump out of local optimal compared with other popular algorithms. Finally, the ECOA was applied to two real-world engineering optimization problems, verifying its ability to solve practical optimization problems and its superiority compared to other algorithms. In humanitarian aid scenarios, the model of cumulative capacitated vehicle routing problem can be used in vehicle scheduling, aiming at delivering materials to recipients as quickly as possible, thus minimizing their wait time. Traditional approaches focus on this metric, but practical implementations must also consider factors such as driver labor intensity and the capacity for on-site decision-making. To evaluate driver workload, the operation times of relief vehicles are typically used, and multi-objective modeling is employed to facilitate on-site decision-making. This paper introduces a multi-objective cumulative capacitated vehicle routing problem considering operation time (MO-CCVRP-OT). Our model is bi-objective, aiming to minimize both the cumulative wait time of disaster-affected areas and the extra expenditures incurred by the excess operation time of rescue vehicles. Based on the traditional grey wolf optimizer algorithm, this paper proposes a dynamic grey wolf optimizer algorithm with floating 2-opt (DGWO-F2OPT), which combines real number encoding with an equal-division random key and ROV rules for decoding; in addition, a dynamic non-dominated solution set update strategy is introduced. To solve MO-CCVRP-OT efficiently and increase the algorithm's convergence speed, a multi-objective improved floating 2-opt (F2OPT) local search strategy is proposed. The utopia optimum solution of DGWO-F2OPT has an average value of two fitness values that is 6.22% lower than that of DGWO-2OPT. DGWO-F2OPT's average fitness value in the algorithm comparison trials is 16.49% less than that of NS-2OPT. Variable camber wing technology stands out as the most promising morphing technology currently available in green aviation. Despite the ongoing advancements in smart materials and compliant structures, they still fall short in terms of driving force, power, and speed, rendering mechanical structures based on kinematics the preferred choice for large long-range civilian aircraft. In line with this principle, this paper introduces a linkage-based variable camber trailing edge design approach. Covering coordinated design, internal skeleton design, flexible skin design, and drive structure design, the method leverages a two-dimensional supercritical airfoil to craft a seamless, continuous two-dimensional wing full-size variable camber trailing edge structure, boasting a 2.7 m span and 4.3 m chord. Given the significant changes in aerodynamic load direction, ground tests under cruise load utilize a tracking-loading system based on tape and lever. Results indicate that the designed single-degree-of-freedom Watt I mechanism and Stephenson III drive mechanism adeptly accommodate the slender trailing edge of the supercritical airfoil. Under a maximum cruise vertical aerodynamic load of 17,072 N, the structure meets strength requirements when deflected to 5°. The sand cat swarm optimization algorithm (SCSO) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm that has been proposed in recent years. The algorithm optimizes the search ability of individuals by mimicking the hunting behavior of sand cat groups in nature, thereby achieving robust optimization performance. It is characterized by few control parameters and simple operation. However, due to the lack of population diversity, SCSO is less efficient in solving complex problems and is prone to fall into local optimization. To address these shortcomings and refine the algorithm's efficacy, an improved multi-strategy sand cat optimization algorithm (IMSCSO) is proposed in this paper. In IMSCSO, a roulette fitness–distance balancing strategy is used to select codes to replace random agents in the exploration phase and enhance the convergence performance of the algorithm. To bolster population diversity, a novel population perturbation strategy is introduced, aiming to facilitate the algorithm's escape from local optima. Finally, a best–worst perturbation strategy is developed. The approach not only maintains diversity throughout the optimization process but also enhances the algorithm's exploitation capabilities. To evaluate the performance of the proposed IMSCSO, we conducted experiments in the CEC 2017 test suite and compared IMSCSO with seven other algorithms. In this paper, we describe a sheet-shaped throwable transforming robot. Sheet-type robots can change their shape to perform tasks according to the situation. Therefore, they are expected to be useful in places with many restrictions, such as disaster sites. However, most of them can only move slowly on the ground. Therefore, in order to actually deliver the robot to the disaster site, it must be carried manually. To solve this problem, we are developing a sheet-shaped robot that can be thrown from the sky. Previously developed prototypes could only move in the forward direction, and the transition from falling to walking was complicated and uncertain. To combat climate change, one approach is to manufacture products from biomass-fungi composite materials instead of petroleum-based plastics. These products can be used in packaging, furniture, and construction industries. A 3D printing-based manufacturing method was developed for these biomass-fungi composite materials, eliminating the need for molds, and enabling customized product design. However, previous studies on the 3D printing-based method showed significant shrinkage of printed samples. In this paper, an approach is proposed to reduce the shrinkage by incorporating ionic crosslinking into biomass-fungi composite materials. This paper reports two sets of experiments regarding the effects of sodium alginate (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on fungal growth and fungal viability. The first set of experiments was conducted using Petri dishes with fungi isolated from colonized biomass-fungi material and different concentrations of SA and CaCl2. Fungal growth was measured by the circumference of fungal colonies. The results showed that concentrations of SA and CaCl2 had significant effects on fungal growth and no fungal growth was observed on Petri dishes with 15% CaCl2. Some of these Petri dishes were also observed under confocal microscopy. The results confirmed the differences obtained by measuring the circumference of fungal colonies. The second set of experiments was conducted using Petri dishes with biomass-fungi mixtures that were treated with different concentrations of SA and exposure times in a CaCl2 (crosslinking) solution. Fungal viability was measured by counting colony-forming units. The results showed that the addition of the SA solution and exposure times in the crosslinking solution had statistically significant effects on fungal viability. The 2SA solution was prepared by dissolving 2 g of SA in 100 mL of water, the 5SA solution was prepared by dissolving 5 g of SA in 100 mL of water, and the crosslinking solution was prepared by dissolving 5 g of CaCl2 in 100 mL of water. Digital health tracking is a source of valuable insights for public health research and consumer health technology. The brain is the most complex organ, containing information about psychophysical and physiological biomarkers that correlate with health. Specifically, recent developments in electroencephalogram (EEG), functional near-infra-red spectroscopy (fNIRS), and photoplethysmography (PPG) technologies have allowed the development of devices that can remotely monitor changes in brain activity. The inclusion criteria for the papers in this review encompassed studies on self-applied, remote, non-invasive neuroimaging techniques (EEG, fNIRS, or PPG) within healthcare applications. A total of 23 papers were reviewed, comprising 17 on using EEGs for remote monitoring and 6 on neurofeedback interventions, while no papers were found related to fNIRS and PPG. This review reveals that previous studies have leveraged mobile EEG devices for remote monitoring across the mental health, neurological, and sleep domains, as well as for delivering neurofeedback interventions. With headsets and ear-EEG devices being the most common, studies found mobile devices feasible for implementation in study protocols while providing reliable signal quality. Moderate to substantial agreement overall between remote and clinical-grade EEGs was found using statistical tests. The results highlight the promise of portable brain-imaging devices with regard to continuously evaluating patients in natural settings, though further validation and usability enhancements are needed as this technology develops. In this paper, we proposed a miniature quadrupedal piezoelectric robot with a mass of 1.8 g and a body length of 4.6 cm. The robot adopts a novel spatial parallel mechanism as its transmission. Each leg of the robot has two degrees of freedom (DOFs): swing and lift. The trajectory necessary for walking is achieved by the appropriate phasing of these two DOFs. A new manufacturing method for piezoelectric actuators was developed. During the stacking process, discrete patterned PZT pieces are used to avoid dielectric failure caused by laser cutting. Copper-clad FR-4 is used as the solder pad instead of copper foil, making the connection between the pad and the actuator more reliable. The lift powertrain of the robot was modeled and the link length of the powertrain was optimized based on the model. The maximum output force of each leg can reach 26 mN under optimized design parameters, which is 1.38 times the required force for successful walking. The frequency response of the powertrain was measured and fitted to the second-order system, which enabled increased leg amplitudes near the powertrain resonance of approximately 70 Hz with adjusted drive signals. The maximum speed of the robot without load reached 48.66 cm/s (10.58 body lengths per second) and the payload capacity can reach 5.5 g (3.05 times its mass) near the powertrain resonance. Precision control of multiple robotic fish visual navigation in complex underwater environments has long been a challenging issue in the field of underwater robotics. To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-robot fish obstacle traversal technique based on the combination of cross-modal variational autoencoder (CM-VAE) and imitation learning. Firstly, the overall framework of the robotic fish control system is introduced, where the first-person view of the robotic fish is encoded into a low-dimensional latent space using CM-VAE, and then different latent features in the space are mapped to the velocity commands of the robotic fish through imitation learning. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments are conducted on linear, S-shaped, and circular gate frame trajectories with both single and multiple robotic fish. Analysis reveals that the visual navigation method proposed in this paper can stably traverse various types of gate frame trajectories. Compared to end-to-end learning and purely unsupervised image reconstruction, the proposed control strategy demonstrates superior performance, offering a new solution for the intelligent navigation of robotic fish in complex environments. Under water, on land, or in the air, creatures use a variety of grasping methods to hunt, avoid predators, or carry food. Numerous studies have been conducted to construct a bionic surface for grasping tasks. This paper reviews the typical biomimetic structures and surfaces (wedge-shaped surface, suction cup surface and thorn claw surface) for grasping scenarios. Initially, progress in gecko-inspired wedge-shaped adhesive surfaces is reviewed, encompassing the underlying mechanisms that involve tuning the contact area and peeling behavior. The applications of grippers utilizing this adhesive technology are also discussed. Subsequently, the suction force mechanisms and applications of surfaces inspired by octopus and remora suction cups are outlined. Moreover, this paper introduces the applications of robots incorporating the principles of beetle-inspired and bird-inspired thorn claw structures. Lastly, inspired by remoras' adhesive discs, a composite biomimetic adhesive surface is proposed. It integrates features from wedge-shaped, suction cup, and claw thorn surfaces, potentially surpassing the adaptability of basic bioinspired surfaces. Safe, underwater exploration in the ocean is a challenging task due to the complex environment, which often contains areas with dense coral reefs, uneven terrain, or many obstacles. To address this issue, an intelligent underwater exploration framework of a biomimetic robot is proposed in this paper, including an obstacle avoidance model, motion planner, and yaw controller. Firstly, with the aid of the onboard distance sensors in robotic fish, the obstacle detection model is established. On this basis, two types of obstacles, i.e., rectangular and circular, are considered, followed by the obstacle collision model's construction. Secondly, a deep reinforcement learning method is adopted to plan the plane motion, and the performances of different training setups are investigated. Thirdly, a backstepping method is applied to derive the yaw control law, in which a sigmoid function-based transition method is employed to smooth the planning output. Finally, a series of simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. With the development of intelligent vehicle technology, the probability of road traffic accidents occurring has been effectively reduced to a certain extent. However, there is still insufficient research on head injuries in human vehicle collisions, making it impossible to effectively predict pedestrian head injuries in accidents. To study the efficacy of a combined active and passive safety system on pedestrian head protection through the combined effect of the exterior airbag and the braking control systems of an intelligent vehicle, a "vehicle–pedestrian" interaction system is constructed in this study and is verified by real collision cases. On this basis, a combined active and passive system database is developed to analyze the cross-influence of the engine hood airbag and the vehicle braking curve parameters on pedestrian HIC (head injury criterion). Meanwhile, a hierarchy design strategy for a combined active and passive system is proposed, and a rapid prediction of HIC is achieved via the establishment of a fitting equation for each grading. The results show that the exterior airbag can effectively protect the pedestrian's head, prevent the collision between the pedestrian's head and the vehicle front structure, and reduce the HIC. The braking parameter H2 is significantly correlated with head injury, and when H2 is less than 1.8, the HIC value is less than 1000 in nearly 90% of cases. The hierarchy design strategy and HIC prediction method of the combined active and passive system proposed in this paper can provide a theoretical basis for rapid selection and parameter design. Aerial recovery and redeployment can effectively increase the operating radius and the endurance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, the challenge lies in the effect of the aerodynamic force on the recovery system, and the existing road-based and sea-based UAV recovery methods are no longer applicable. Inspired by the predatory behavior of net-casting spiders, this study introduces a cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) for UAV aerial recovery, which utilizes an end-effector camera to detect the UAV's flight trajectory, and the CDPR dynamically adjusts its spatial position to intercept and recover the UAV. This paper establishes a comprehensive cable model, simultaneously considering the elasticity, mass, and aerodynamic force, and the static equilibrium equation for the CDPR is derived. The effects of the aerodynamic force and cable tension on the spatial configuration of the cable are analyzed. Numerical computations yield the CDPR's end-effector position error and cable-driven power consumption at discrete spatial points, and the results show that the position error decreases but the power consumption increases with the increase in the cable tension lower limit (CTLL). To improve the comprehensive performance of the recovery system, a multi-objective optimization method is proposed, considering the error distribution, power consumption distribution, and safety distance. The optimized CTLL and interception space position coordinates are determined through simulation, and comparative analysis with the initial condition indicates an 83% reduction in error, a 62.3% decrease in power consumption, and a 1.2 m increase in safety distance. Three-dimensional bioprinting is a promising technology for bone tissue engineering. However, most hydrogel bioinks lack the mechanical and post-printing fidelity properties suitable for such hard tissue regeneration. To overcome these weak properties, calcium phosphates can be employed in a bioink to compensate for the lack of certain characteristics. Further, the extracellular matrix of natural bone contains this mineral, resulting in its structural robustness. Thus, calcium phosphates are necessary components of bioink for bone tissue engineering. This review paper examines different recently explored calcium phosphates, as a component of potential bioinks, for the biological, mechanical and structural properties required of 3D bioprinted scaffolds, exploring their distinctive properties that render them favorable biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. The discussion encompasses recent applications and adaptations of 3D-printed scaffolds built with calcium phosphates, delving into the scientific reasons behind the prevalence of certain types of calcium phosphates over others. Additionally, this paper elucidates their interactions with polymer hydrogels for 3D bioprinting applications. The prediction of total ionospheric electron content (TEC) is of great significance for space weather monitoring and wireless communication. Recently, deep learning models have become increasingly popular in TEC prediction. However, these deep learning models usually contain a large number of hyperparameters. Finding the optimal hyperparameters (also known as hyperparameter optimization) is currently a great challenge, directly affecting the predictive performance of the deep learning models. The Beluga Whale Optimization (BWO) algorithm is a swarm intelligence optimization algorithm that can be used to optimize hyperparameters of deep learning models. However, it is easy to fall into local minima. This paper analyzed the drawbacks of BWO and proposed an improved BWO algorithm, named FAMBWO (Firefly Assisted Multi-strategy Beluga Whale Optimization). Our proposed FAMBWO was compared with 11 state-of-the-art swarm intelligence optimization algorithms on 30 benchmark functions, and the results showed that our improved algorithm had faster convergence speed and better solutions on almost all benchmark functions. Then we proposed an automated machine learning framework FAMBWO-MA-BiLSTM for TEC prediction, where MA-BiLSTM is for TEC prediction and FAMBWO for hyperparameters optimization. We compared it with grid search, random search, Bayesian optimization algorithm and beluga whale optimization algorithm. Results showed that the MA-BiLSTM model optimized by FAMBWO is significantly better than the MA-BiLSTM model optimized by grid search, random search, Bayesian optimization algorithm, and BWO. Biologically inspired intelligent methods have been applied to various sensing systems in order to extract features from a huge size of raw sensing data. For example, point cloud data can be applied to human activity recognition, multi-person tracking, and suspicious person detection, but a single RGB-D camera is not enough to perform the above tasks. Therefore, this study propose a 3D environmental map-building method integrating point cloud data measured via multiple RGB-D cameras. First, a fast multi-scale of distributed batch-learning growing neural gas (Fast MS-DBL-GNG) is proposed as a topological feature extraction method in order to reduce computational costs because a single RGB-D camera may output 1 million data. Next, random sample consensus (RANSAC) is applied to integrate two sets of point cloud data using topological features. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, Fast MS-DBL-GNG is applied to perform topological mapping from several point cloud data sets measured in different directions with some overlapping areas included in two images. The experimental results show that the proposed method can extract topological features enough to integrate point cloud data sets, and it runs 14 times faster than the previous GNG method with a 23% reduction in the quantization error. Finally, this paper discuss the advantage and disadvantage of the proposed method through numerical comparison with other methods, and explain future works to improve the proposed method. The wind-driven aerodynamic noise of super-high-rise building facades not only affects the experience of use inside the building but also reduces the life cycle of building facade materials to some extent. In this paper, we are inspired by the micro-groove structure of shark skin with damping and noise reduction properties and apply bionic skin to reduce the aerodynamic noise impact of super-high-rise buildings. The aerodynamic noise performance of smooth and super-high-rise building models with bionic grooves is simulated via CFD to investigate the noise reduction performance of different bionic groove patterns, such as I-shape, ∪-shape, V-shape, and ∩-shape patterns, and their corresponding acoustic noise reduction mechanisms. This study showed that the bionic shark groove skin has a certain noise reduction effect, and the I-shaped groove has the best noise reduction effect. By applying bionic skin, the aerodynamic noise of super-high-rise buildings can be effectively reduced to improve the use experience and environmental quality of the buildings and provide a new research idea and application direction for the aerodynamic noise reduction design of building facades. A spatial redundantly actuated parallel mechanism (RAPM) constrained by two point contact higher kinematic pairs (HKPs) has been designed, arising from the inspiration of mastication in human beings: the end effector is the lower jaw, the six kinematic chains are the primary chewing muscles, and the constraints at HKPs are the temporomandibular joints. In this paper, firstly, the constrained motions of the mechanism are described in detail; thereafter, five models are formulated by the well-known Newton–Euler's law, the Lagrangian equations, and the principle of virtual work, to explore its rigid-body inverse dynamics. The symbolic results show that the model structures based on these approaches are quite different: the model via the Newton–Euler law well reflects the nature of the mechanism in terms of the constraint forces from HKPs with six equations and eight unknowns, and the existence of reaction forces at the spherical joints is tightly dependent on the number of kinematic chains. In comparison, from the latter two methods, the constraint forces and the reaction forces at spherical joints do not appear in the four models in which there are only four equations and six unknowns. Further, by using the dynamics model of the non-redundantly actuated counterpart as the core in both the second models from the energy and virtual work-related methods, their computational cost is only about 16.7% and 36.63% of the two first models, respectively. Dragonflies can independently control the movement of their forewing and hindwing to achieve the desired flight. In comparison with previous studies that mostly considered the same kinematics of the fore- and hindwings, this paper focuses on the aerodynamic interference of three-dimensional tandem flapping wings when the forewing kinematics is different from that of the hindwing. The effects of flapping amplitude (Φ1), flapping mean angle ( ϕ 1 ¯ ), and pitch rotation duration (Δtr1) of the forewing, together with wing spacing (L) are examined numerically. The results show that Φ1 and ϕ 1 ¯ have a significant effect on the aerodynamic forces of the individual and tandem systems, but Δtr1 has little effect. At a small L, a smaller Φ1, or larger ϕ 1 ¯ of the forewing can increase the overall aerodynamic force, but at a large L, smaller Φ1 or larger ϕ 1 ¯ can actually decrease the force. The flow field analysis shows that Φ1 and ϕ 1 ¯ primarily alter the extent of the impact of the previously revealed narrow channel effect, downwash effect, and wake capture effect, thereby affecting force generation. Feature selection (FS) is a classic and challenging optimization task in most machine learning and data mining projects. Recently, researchers have attempted to develop more effective methods by using metaheuristic methods in FS. To increase population diversity and further improve the effectiveness of the beluga whale optimization (BWO) algorithm, in this paper, we propose a multi-strategies improved BWO (MSBWO), which incorporates improved circle mapping and dynamic opposition-based learning (ICMDOBL) population initialization as well as elite pool (EP), step-adaptive Lévy flight and spiral updating position (SLFSUP), and golden sine algorithm (Gold-SA) strategies. Among them, ICMDOBL contributes to increasing the diversity during the search process and reducing the risk of falling into local optima. The EP technique also enhances the algorithm′s ability to escape from local optima. The SLFSUP, which is distinguished from the original BWO, aims to increase the rigor and accuracy of the development of local spaces. Gold-SA is introduced to improve the quality of the solutions. The hybrid performance of MSBWO was evaluated comprehensively on IEEE CEC2005 test functions, including a qualitative analysis and comparisons with other conventional methods as well as state-of-the-art (SOTA) metaheuristic approaches that were introduced in 2024. The results demonstrate that MSBWO is superior to other algorithms in terms of accuracy and maintains a better balance between exploration and exploitation. Moreover, according to the proposed continuous MSBWO, the binary MSBWO variant (BMSBWO) and other binary optimizers obtained by the mapping function were evaluated on ten UCI datasets with a random forest (RF) classifier. This paper presents an adaptive line-of-sight (LOS) guidance method, incorporating a finite-time sideslip angle observer to achieve precise planar path tracking of a bionic robotic fish driven by LOS. First, an adaptive LOS guidance method based on real-time cross-track error is presented. To mitigate the adverse effects of the sideslip angle on tracking performance, a finite-time observer (FTO) based on finite-time convergence theory is employed to observe the time-varying sideslip angle and correct the target yaw. Subsequently, classical proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers are utilized to achieve yaw tracking, followed by static and dynamic yaw angle experiments for evaluation. Finally, the yaw-tracking-based path-tracking control strategy is applied to the robotic fish, whose motion is generated by an improved central pattern generator (CPG) and equipped with a six-axis inertial measurement unit for real-time swimming direction. Path planning is a key problem in the autonomous navigation of mobile robots and a research hotspot in the field of robotics. Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) faces challenges such as low solution accuracy and a slow convergence speed, and it easy falls into local optimization in path planning applications. For this reason, this paper proposes a Multi-strategy Improved Harris Hawk Optimization (MIHHO) algorithm. First, the double adaptive weight strategy is used to enhance the search capability of the algorithm to significantly improve the convergence accuracy and speed of path planning; second, the Dimension Learning-based Hunting (DLH) search strategy is introduced to effectively balance exploration and exploitation while maintaining the diversity of the population; and then, Position update strategy based on Dung Beetle Optimizer algorithm is proposed to reduce the algorithm's possibility of falling into local optimal solutions during path planning. The experimental results of the comparison of the test functions show that the MIHHO algorithm is ranked first in terms of performance, with significant improvements in optimization seeking ability, convergence speed, and stability. Finally, MIHHO is applied to robot path planning, and the test results show that in four environments with different complexities and scales, the average path lengths of MIHHO are improved by 1.99%, 14.45%, 4.52%, and 9.19% compared to HHO, respectively. These results indicate that MIHHO has significant performance advantages in path planning tasks and helps to improve the path planning efficiency and accuracy of mobile robots. This paper explores the use of few-shot learning in Wi-Fi-based indoor positioning, utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) combined with meta-learning techniques to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of positioning systems. The focus is on addressing the challenge of limited labeled data, a prevalent issue in extensive indoor environments. The study explores various scenarios, comparing the performance of the base CNN and meta-learning models. The meta-learning approach involves few-shot learning tasks, such as three-way N-shot, five-way N-shot, etc., to enhance the model's ability to generalize from limited data. The experiments were conducted across various scenarios, evaluating the performance of the models with different numbers of samples per class (K) after filtering by cosine similarity (FCS) during both the stages of data preprocessing and meta-learning. The scenarios included both base classes and novel classes, with and without meta-learning. The results indicated that the base CNN model achieved varying accuracy levels depending on the scenario and the number of samples per class retained after FCS. Meta-learning performed acceptably in scenarios with fewer samples, which are the distinct datasets pertaining to novel classes. With 20 samples per class, the base CNN achieved an accuracy of 0.80 during the pre-training stage, while meta-learning (three-way one-shot) achieved an accuracy of 0.78 on a new small dataset with novel classes.
