Cotreatment, mechanical disruption of lignocellulosic biomass during microbial fermentation, is a potential alternative to thermochemical pretreatment as a means of increasing the accessibility of lignocellulose to biological attack. Successful implementation of cotreatment requires microbes that can withstand milling, while solubilizing and utilizing carbohydrates from lignocellulose. In this context, cotreatment with thermophilic, lignocellulose-fermenting bacteria has been successfully evaluated for a number of lignocellulosic feedstocks. Here, cotreatment was applied to sugarcane bagasse using monocultures of the cellulose-fermenting Clostridium thermocellum and cocultures with the hemicellulose-fermenting Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum. This resulted in 76 % carbohydrate solubilization (a 1.8-fold increase over non-cotreated controls) on 10 g/L solids loading, having greater effect on the hemicellulose fraction. With cotreatment, fermentation by wild-type cultures at low substrate concentrations increased cumulative product formation by 45 % for the monoculture and 32 % for the coculture. Effects of short hydraulic retention time (HRT) in wet weather and long HRT in dry weather on sludge properties, microbial community, and metabolomic of anammox granular system were studied. Results showed under equal nitrogen loading rate (0.4 kg N/(m 3 · d)) conditions, an HRT of 4.41 h was beneficial for total nitrogen removal efficiency (78.9 %). The shorter the HRT, the lower the particle density (1.01±0.34 g/cm 3 ), the lower the settling performance (1.18±0.28 cm/s), and the worse the biomass retention (1.04±0.18 g/L), but the higher the mechanical strength (85.22 Pa). Properly decreasing HRT could increase the permeability of anammox granules, ensuring their activity. Metabolomics analysis indicated that the activity of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria was promoted by stimulating the metabolic pathways of amino acids and glycerophospholipids. Biomethanization of crude rice straw (RS) was enhanced by a coupled effectiveness of sulphonated graphene (SGR) with sludge rich anaerobes (SRA). A reduction of 19.2 ± 1.32% for cellulose, 40.8 ± 3.7% for hemicellulose and 30.8 ± 2.4% for lignin was achieved with addition of SRA after fermentation of 60 days. The abundance of hydrolytic microbes in SRA i.e. Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria caused RS structure liquefaction and dissolution. The reduction of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin boosted to 92.3 ± 1.5, 84.9 ± 3.5 and 97.0 ± 1.8% respectively with SGR catalyst addition of 100 mg/gVS. Reducing sugars, phenols and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were subsequently utilized by bacteria and archaea species of Methanosphaera, Methanocella, Candidatus Methanoregula, Methanolinea and Methanosaeta. The biogas yield was 92 ± 3.1 mL/gRS and methane content amounted to 68 ± 4.6% % at SGR catalyst of 80 mg/gVS. Although a large amount of textile wastewater is discharged at high temperatures, azo dye reduction under extreme-thermophilic conditions by mixed cultures has gained little attention. In this study, Acid Orange 7 (AO7) was used as the model azo dye to demonstrate the decolorization ability of an extreme-thermophilic mixed culture. The results showed that a decolorization efficiency of over 90% was achieved for AO7. The neutral red (NR, 0.1 mM) could promote AO7 decolorization, in which the group of Cell + NR offered the highest decolorization rate of 1.568 1/h and t 1/2 was only 0.44 h, whereas after CuCl 2 addition, the decolorization rate (0.141 1/h) was lower and t 1/2 (4.92 h) was much longer. Thus, CuCl 2 notably inhibited this process. Caldanaerobacter (64.0%) and Pseudomonas (25.4%) were the main enriched bacteria, which were not reported to have the ability for dye decolorization. The study compared the differences in VFAs production between raw sludge and thermal hydrolyzed sludge (TH-sludge) at different temperature (35 °C and 55 °C) in four semi-continuous acidification reactors. Optimal VFAs yield was obtained from TH-sludge at 35 °C (0.22 gVFA COD /gVS), 44.6% higher than raw sludge at 35 °C, since the advantage of TH-sludge in SCOD solubilization overcame its disadvantage of lower carbon biodegradability. Moreover, high temperature (55 °C) was proved to aid the acidification of raw sludge by 15.7% (in Y VFAs ), but inhibit that of TH-sludge by 12.2%, mainly due to the suppressed microbial activities under heat. Microbial community analysis showed that TH-sludge had a larger proportion of acidogenic microbes than raw sludge, mainly attributing to the increase of Selenomonadales (37.3% vs. 3.7%); high temperature enriched thermophilic proteolytic microbes, Anaerobaculum and Coprothermobacter. To reveal the long-term competitive dynamics of anaerobes in anaerobic bioreactors with sulfate reduction, a comprehensive structured mathematical model was designed for an extension of the Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1). Sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) were categorized into acetogenic-likewise SRB (ASRB) and methanogenic-likewise SRB (MSRB). Experimental data from 329 days of continuous operation of a laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor was used for model calibration and validation. Results show that the model has a good agreement with experimental data and that three stages including the MPA dominant, stalemate and SRB dominant stages were clearly appeared throughout the whole competition period. The model was capable of predicting the long-term dynamic competition of sulfidogens and methanogens for electrons. This could explain a long-term of over 200 days needed for the SRB out-competing the MPA, and support speculation that the SRB could finally out-compete both the AcB and the MPA., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Non-airtight fermentation of lignocellulosic agricultural residues with animal wastes is an emerging pretreatment method to produce acid-rich substrates in two-phase anaerobic digestion. Acid-rich hydrolysate could be an excellent feedstock for cultivating microalgae, therefore, the feasibility of a two-step process combining non-airtight fermentation of sugar beet pulp with anaerobically digested dairy manure and mixotrophic microalgae species Chlorella cultivation in the hydrolysate was explored in this study. The hydrolysis and acidification process of 8-day non-airtight fermentation produced up to 8.1 g/L volatile fatty acids under mesophilic condition. Microalgal growths in diluted hydrolysates were compared with that in diluted digested dairy manure (DDM) as a control using experimental data and fitted logistic models. Chlorella grown in the 10-fold diluted DDM showed an exponential decay, while Chlorella cultured in the 3-fold diluted hydrolysate demonstrated the best performance in terms of biomass density, which reached 2.17 g/L within a short period of time., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

A combined process coupling a Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction and an anaerobic biological technology was investigated in order to effectively treat amoxicillin-containing wastewater. With the increase in the pretreatment degree, the average COD removal rate correspondingly increased from 84.8% to 92.4% using the anaerobic biological treatment, and the biodegradability and COD removal efficiency was improved by the pretreatment processes. During the process of amoxicillin degradation, hydroxyl free radicals tended to attack the lactamide, amide and pentacyclic rings of amoxicillin. In the excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra of soluble microbial products (SMPs), the absorption peak of humic acid gradually decreased with application of the pretreatment. The pretreatment products were more beneficial to the characteristics of anaerobic granular sludge. Herein, a strengthened circulation anaerobic (SCA) reactor was employed for the treatment of actual alkali-decrement wastewater. The degradation mechanism of polyester oligomers and the relationship between the treatment performance and microbial community structure were systematically investigated using various advanced techniques. Results suggest that the accumulation of volatile fatty acids has an inhibitory effect on methanogenic activity. Molecular weight distributions suggest that only incomplete degradation of oligomers was achieved, due to acetogenic inhibition in the lower part of the SCA reactor. Meta-proteomic approach analysis revealed that the methanogens containing heterodisulfide reductase were the primary species involved in methane metabolism. Based on these findings, a possible degradation mechanism for alkali-decrement wastewater in the SCA reactor is proposed. Two up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors (RM with 10 g Fe L -1 magnetite, RB without magnetite) feeding with synthetic wastewater were built to investigate the effect of magnetite addition on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance during start-up and starvation recovery stages. With the magnetite addition, the COD removal efficiency and biogas production during the two stages were enhanced, and the recovery time of RM was shortened by about 50%. The reduced synthesis of riboflavin and heme c along with enhanced sludge conductivity of RM indicated that magnetite could replace their roles for efficient extracellular electron transfer (EET), which favors the growth of anaerobes. Microbial community analysis showed that potential syntrophic partners like Syntrophaceae and Methanothrix were enriched in RM during the recovery stage, and the performance was improved with quick responsiveness. Dark fermentation systems often show low H 2 yields and unstable H 2 production, as the result of the variability of microbial dynamics and metabolic pathways. Recent batch investigations have demonstrated that an artificial consortium of two anaerobic bacteria, Clostridium acetobutylicum and Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough, may redirect metabolic fluxes and improve H 2 yields. This study aimed at evaluating the scale-up from batch to continuous H 2 production in an up-flow anaerobic packed-bed reactor (APBR) continuously fed with a glucose-medium. The effects of various parameters, including void hydraulic retention time (HRTv), pH, and alkalinity, on H 2 production performances and metabolic pathways were investigated. The results demonstrated that a stable H 2 production was reached after 3-4days of operation. H 2 production rates increased significantly with decreasing HRTv from 4 to 2h. Suboptimal conditions in anaerobic digesters (e.g., presence of common inhibitors ammonia and salinity) limit waste hydrolysis and lead to unstable performance and process failures. Application of inhibitor-tolerant inocula improves hydrolysis, but approaches are needed to establish and maintain these desired waste-hydrolyzing bacteria in high-solids reactors. Herein, performance was compared for leach bed reactors (LBRs) seeded with unacclimated or acclimated inoculum (0-60% by mass) at start-up and over long-term operation. High quantities of inoculum (∼60%) increase waste hydrolysis and are beneficial at start-up or when inhibitors are increasing. After start-up (∼112days) with high inoculum quantities, leachate recirculation leads to accumulation of inhibitor-tolerant hydrolyzing bacteria in leachate. During long-term operation, low inoculum quantities (∼10%) effectively increase waste hydrolysis relative to without solids-derived inoculum. Releases of organic compounds and phosphorus from phosphorus-accumulating granular sludge (PGS) and phosphorus-accumulating flocculent sludge (PFS) during low-temperature thermal pretreatment and anaerobic fermentation were investigated. Meanwhile, biogas production potential and microbial community structures were explored. The results indicate that much more soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and phosphorus were released from PGS than from PFS via low-temperature thermal pretreatment because of the higher extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content in PGS and higher ratio of phosphorus reserved in EPS. Furthermore, PGS contains more anaerobes and dead cells, resulting in much higher SCOD and volatile fatty acids release from PGS than those from PFS during fermentation. PGS fermentation facilitated the n-butyric acid production, and PGS exhibited the hydrogen production potential during fermentation due to the presence of hydrogen-producing bacteria. The effect of substrate to inoculum (So/Xo) ratio and supplementation of magnetite/graphene oxide (MGO) nano-composite material on hydrogen production from gelatinaceous wastewater via dark fermentation process was investigated. Results demonstrated that optimum So/Xo ratio of 1.0gCOD/gVSS achieved maximal hydrogen yield (HY) of 79.2±11.9mL H2/gCOD removed. Supplementation of anaerobes with 100mg/L MGO promoted HY up to 112.4±10.5mL H2/gCOD removed. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids was improved to 80.8±7.6, 34.4±2.3 and 31.4±2.2%, respectively. Acetate (HAc) and butyrate (HBu) concentrations increased from 102±6.8 to 125.3±6.3 and from 31.1±1.5 to 48.8±3.5mg/gVSS, respectively. However, propionate (HPr) concentration dropped from 35.9±2.7 to 15±1.3mg/gVSS. Hydrogenase enzyme activity increased 9-folds and the anaerobes elongated from ca. 1.8-2.9 to ca. 2.5-5.1μm with MGO addition. Using batch and repeated batch cultivations, this study investigated the effects of bioaugmentation with enriched microbial consortia (named as EMC) on methane production from effluents of hydrogen-producing stage of potato slurry, as well as on the indigenous bacterial community. The results demonstrated that the improved methane production and shift of the indigenous bacterial community structure were dependent on the EMC/sludge ratio and bioaugmentation patterns. The methane yield and production rate in repeated batch bioaugmentation pattern of EMC were, respectively, average 15% and 10% higher than in one-time bioaugmentation pattern of EMC. DNA-sequencing approach showed that the enhanced methane production in the repeated batch bioaugmentation pattern of EMC mainly resulted from the enriched iron-reducing bacteria and the persistence of the introduced Syntrophomonas, which led to a rapid degradation of individual VFAs to methane. The study provided a cost-effective and high-efficiency volatile fatty acid (VFA) production strategy by co-fermentation of food waste (FW) and excess sludge (ES) without artificial pH control. VFA production of 867.42mg COD/g-VS was obtained under the optimized condition: FW/ES 5, solid retention time 7d, organic loading rate 9g VS/L-d and temperature 40°C. Mechanism exploration revealed that the holistic biodegradability of substrate was greatly enhanced, and proper pH range (5.2-6.4) was formed by the high buffering capacity of the co-fermentation system itself, which effectively enhanced hydrolysis yield (63.04%) and acidification yield (83.46%) and inhibited methanogenesis. Moreover, microbial community analysis manifested that co-fermentation raised the relative abundances of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria including Clostridium, Sporanaerobacter, Tissierella and Bacillus, but suppressed the methanogen Anaerolineae, which also facilitated high VFA production. Anaerobic baffled reactors (ABRs) have been widely used in engineering but very few models have been developed to simulate its performance. Based on the integration of biomass retention and liquid-gas mass transfer of biogas into the biochemical process derived in the International Water Association (IWA) Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1 (ADM1), a mathematical model was developed to predict volatile fatty acids (VFAs), chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) and biogas in a 4-compartment ABR operated with variable hydraulic retention time (HRT). The model was calibrated and validated with the experimental data obtained from the reactor when the HRT decreased from 2.0 to 1.0d by stages. It was found that the predicted VFAs, CODCr and biogas agreed well with the experimental data. The short- and long-term effects of inorganic phosphate on property of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granule were investigated in this study. Acute exposure to high-level phosphate (⩾50 mM) induced the cytoplasm leakage. During a 195-day continuous-flow operation, the gradually increasing phosphate (up to 500 mgP L(-1)) slightly affected the specific anammox activity, hardly impacted the heme c content, remarkably decreased the extracellular polymeric substances production and significantly stimulated the dehydrogenase activity of anammox granules. Microbial community analysis showed no shift in the dominant anammox strain and higher population but lower relative abundance of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria compared to the control granules. Interestingly, novel anammox granules with a hydroxyapatite core were cultivated, which possessed excellent settleability, huge granule diameter and superior mechanical strength. This study evaluated the link between anaerobic bacterial diversity and, the biodegradation of antibiotic combinations and assessed how amending antibiotic combination and increasing concentration of antibiotics in a stepwise fashion influences the development of resistance genes in anaerobic reactors. The biodegradation, sorption and occurrence of the known antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of erythromycin and tetracycline were investigated using the processes of UV-HPLC and qPCR analysis respectively. Ion Torrent sequencing was used to detect microbial community changes in response to the addition of antibiotics. The overall results indicated that changes in the structure of a microbial community lead to changes in biodegradation capacity, sorption of antibiotics combinations and occurrence of ARGs. The enhanced biodegradation efficiency appeared to generate variations in the structure of the bacterial community. The results suggested that controlling the ultimate Gram-negative bacterial community, especially Acinetobacter-related populations, may promote the successful biodegradation of antibiotic combinations and reduce the occurrence of ARGs., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of four alkali reagents (NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2, mixed alkali) on waste activated sludge (WAS) hydrolytic acidification and microbial community was studied in semi-continuous fermentation systems at low temperature (15°C) over long term operational time (65day). The results showed that protein and polysaccharide of NaOH (124.26, 11.92) was similar to that of KOH (109.53, 11.30), both were higher than Ca(OH)2 (70.66, 3.74) and mixed alkali (90.66, 8.71). The short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) of NaOH (231.62) was higher than KOH (220.62mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/g VSS). Although Ca(OH)2 system had strong acidification capacity, the shortage of SCFAs occurred due to the low activity of hydrolase. Illumina MiSeq sequencing revealed that Tissierella and Erysipelothrix were enriched in the NaOH and Ca(OH)2 systems, where Peptostreptococcaceae incertae_sedis was enriched in the NaOH and KOH systems, less Anaerolinea was involved in Ca(OH)2 condition., (Copyright © 2015. In anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process, a harsh ratio of nitrite to ammonia in influent was demanded, and the max nitrogen removal efficiency could only achieve to 89%, both of which limited the development of Anammox. The aim of this work was to study the nitrate removal by organotrophic anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) with C2/C3 fatty acid in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors. In this study, organotrophic AAOB was successfully enriched by adding acetate and propionate with the total organic carbon to nitrogen (TOC/N) ratio of 0.1. In the condition of low substrate, the TN removal efficiency reached 90%, with the effluent TN of around 11.8 mg L(-1). The effect of urea addition on giant reed ensilage and sequential anaerobic digestion (AD) of the ensiled giant reed was evaluated. The dry matter loss during ensilage (up to 90 days) with or without urea addition was about 1%. Addition of 2% urea enhanced production of lactic acid by about 4 times, and reduced production of propionic acid by 2-8 times. Besides, urea addition reduced degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, and increased degradation of lignin in giant reed during ensilage. Ensilage with or without urea addition had no significant effects on the enzymatic digestibility of giant reed, but ensilage with urea addition achieved a cumulative methane yield of 173 L/kg VS, which was 18% higher than that of fresh giant reed. In this work, three matching modes (relative positions, catholyte flow sequences, and flow regimes) of bioelectrochemical module and anaerobic sludge were evaluated and optimized for azo dye treatment in the integrated system with embedding modular bioelectrochemical system into anaerobic sludge reactor. Results showed that it was favorable to operate this integrated system under the condition of 1/4 cathode soaking into sludge with spiral distributor in down-flow direction. Current, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and pH clearly demonstrated the important role of 1/4 soaking in electron/proton transfer. The down-flow direction flowed through electrode zone and then sludge zone could benefit to the efficient use of cathode and improve AO7 treatment. Furthermore, the positive effect of spiral catholyte distributor might be due to its promoting role in mixing and creating a spiral flow channel around the cathode electrode-microbes-solution interface. A laboratory-scale external circulation anaerobic reactor (ECAR) was developed to treat actual coal gasification wastewater. The external circulation ratio (R) was selected as the main operating variable for analysis. From the results, with the hydraulic retention time of 50h, pH > 8.0 and R of 3, the COD, total phenols, volatile phenol and NH4(+)-N removal efficiencies were remarkably increased to 10 ± 2%, 22 ± 5%, 18 ± 1%, and -1 ± 2%, respectively. Besides, increasing R resulted in more transformation from bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to free EPS in the liquid and the particle size distribution of anaerobic granular sludge accumulated in the middle size range of 1.0-2.5mm. The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify non-uniform water flow during dry AD and its implication for biogas production. Laboratory tracer experiments were performed on cattle manure over the course of AD. The evolution of the permeability, the dry bulk density, the dry porosity, the total and volatile solid contents of cattle manure at different stages of AD, revealed waste structure changes, impacting water flow and methane production. Tracer experiments and numerical modeling performed by using a physical non-equilibrium model indicated non-uniform preferential flow patterns during degradation. According to literature, the increase of inoculum recirculation frequency improved methane production rate. However, these results demonstrated that this improvement occurs only at the beginning of manure degradation. Simultaneous removal of COD, SO4(2-) and NO3(-) and recovery of elemental sulfur (S(0)) were evaluated in a four-compartment anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with separated functional units of sulfate reduction (SR) and denitrifying sulfide removal (DSR). Optimal SO4(2-)-S/NO3(-)-N ratio was evaluated as 5:5, with a substantial improvement of S(0) recovery maintained at 79.1%, one of the highest level ever reported; meanwhile, removal rates of COD, SO4(2-) and NO3(-) were approached at 71.9%, 92.9% and 98.6%, respectively. Nitrate served as a key factor to control the shift of SR and DSR related populations, with the possible involvement of Thauera sp. during SR and Sulfurovum sp. or Acidiferrobacter sp. during DSR, respectively. DsrB and aprA genes were the most abundant during SR and DSR processes, respectively. Mixed culture fermentation consists of stable microbial population hence waste could be potentially used as a substrates. The aim of the work was to investigate the impact of pH and retention time on the anaerobic mixed culture fermentation. Trials at different pH (4-12) in unbuffered systems were conducted for 5, 10 and 15days. The highest VFAs concentration was achieved after 15days at pH 10 (0.62g/gVSadded), promising results were also achieved for pH 11 (0.54g/gVSadded). For pH 4 and short retention time propionic acid was the major product instead of acetic acid. For batches run at 15days (besides pH 6) caproic acid presence was noticed whereas at pH 11 occurrence of succinic was quantified. Significant correlation between operational factors and fermentation's effluents was proved. The efficiency of ammonia removal from fresh source-segregated domestic food waste digestate using biogas as a stripping agent was studied in batch experiments at 35, 55 and 70°C, at gas flow rates of 0.125 and 0.250Lbiogasmin(-1)L(-1)digestate with and without pH adjustment. Higher temperatures and alkaline conditions were required for effective ammonia removal, and at 35°C with or without pH adjustment or 55°C with unadjusted pH there was little or no removal. Results were compared to those from earlier studies with digestate that had been stored prior to stripping and showed that ammonia removal from fresh digestate was more difficult, with time constants 1.6-5.7 times higher than those previously reported. This has implications for the design of large-scale systems where continuous stripping of fresh digestate is likely to be the normal operating mode. The goal of this research was to understand the effect of solids retention time (SRT) and feeding frequency on the performance of anaerobic digesters used to recover bioenergy from swine waste. Semi-continuous mesophilic anaerobic digesters were operated at varying SRTs and feeding frequencies. Performance metrics included biogas and methane production rates, biomass robustness and functionality and removals of volatile solids, soluble chemical oxygen demand, the fecal-indicator bacteria Escherichia coli, and the human pathogen Salmonella. Biochemical methane formation potential and specific methanogenic activity assays were used to demonstrate biomass robustness and functionality. Results indicated that anaerobic digesters fed weekly had higher average methane yields (0.20 vs. 0.18m(3)CH4/kg-VSadded), specific methanogenic activities (40 vs. 35ml/day), and fecal indicator bacteria destruction (99.9% vs. 99.4%) than those fed every-other day. To overcome phosphorus deficiency in municipal solid waste composting leachate, orthophosphate (OP) and pyrophosphate (PP) were separately added into leachate to evaluate the possibility of fermentative H2 production with leachate and phosphorus-rich streams as a full nutrient source. Results indicate H2 production is significantly promoted by OP addition but slightly facilitated by PP in some cases, depending on initial pH and P dosage. The highest hydrogen yield (1.95±0.07mol H2/mol glucose) was achieved at a COD/P ratio of 27.64 (mg/mg) with OP as phosphorus source at initial pH 5. For PP, a maximum yield of 1.58±0.09mol H2/mol glucose can be attained at the optimal COD/P ratio of 221.12 (mg/mg) and initial pH 5. OP promotes H2 production via dual approaches: supplying nutrient and relieving inhibition from excessive Ca(2+) on granule sludge. Bioethanol production generates large amounts of vinasse, which is suitable for biogas production. In this study, the anaerobic digestion of sugar beet vinasse was optimised using continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR) supplemented either with lime fertiliser or with 3% cow manure. In both reactors, the C/N ratio was adjusted by adding straw. The biochemical methane potential (BMP) of vinasse was 267.4±4.5LCH4kgVS(-1). Due to the low content of macro- and micronutrients and low C/N ratio of vinasse, biogas production failed when vinasse alone was fed to the reactor. When co-substrate was added, biogas production achieved very close to the BMP of vinasse, being 235.7±32.2LCH4kgVS(-1) from the fertiliser supplied reactor and 265.2±26.8LCH4kgVS(-1) in manure supplied reactor at steady state. In solid-state anaerobic digestion, so-called ss-AD, biogas production is inhibited at high total solids contents. Such inhibition is likely caused by a slow diffusion of dissolved reaction intermediates that locally accumulate. In this study, we investigated the effect of H2 and CO2 partial pressure on ss-AD. Partial pressure of H2 and/or CO2 was artificially fixed, from 0 to 1 557mbars for H2 and from 0 to 427mbars for CO2. High partial pressure of H2 showed a significant effect on methanogenesis, while CO2 had no impact. At high [Formula: see text] , the overall substrate degradation decreased with no accumulation of metabolites from acidogenic bacteria, indicating that the hydrolytic activity was specifically impacted. Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process was started-up in a 2.5L sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) using novel biomass carriers. The SNAD process took only 51d for start-up at nitrogen loading rate (NLR) and organic loading rate (OLR) of 120 and 60g/m(3)-d, respectively. Long-term stable operation of SNAD process was observed at NLR and OLR of 360 and 180g/m(3)-d with average total nitrogen and COD removal efficiencies of >88% and >90%, respectively. The values of conversion ratio [Formula: see text] remained below 0.11 after the start-up period, which further confirmed the long-term stability of SNAD process. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of vinegar residue was investigated in continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The influence of organic loading rate (OLR) and effluent recirculation on AD performance of vinegar residue was tested. Five OLRs, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 g(vs) L(-1) d(-1), were used. The highest volumetric methane productivity of 581.88 mL L(-1) was achieved at OLR of 2.5 g(vs) L(-1) d(-1). Effluent reflux ratio was set as 50%, the results showed that effluent recirculation could effectively neutralize the acidity of vinegar residue, raise the pH of the feedstock, and enhance the buffering capacity of the AD system. Lignocellulosic substrates are widely available but not easily applied in biogas production due to their poor anaerobic degradation. The effect of bioaugmentation by anaerobic hydrolytic bacteria on biogas production was determined by the biochemical methane potential assay. Microbial biomass from full scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating brewery wastewater was a source of active microorganisms and brewery spent grain a model lignocellulosic substrate. Ruminococcus flavefaciens 007C, Pseudobutyrivibrio xylanivorans Mz5(T), Fibrobacter succinogenes S85 and Clostridium cellulovorans as pure and mixed cultures were used to enhance the lignocellulose degradation and elevate the biogas production. P. xylanivorans Mz5(T) was the most successful in elevating methane production (+17.8%), followed by the coculture of P. xylanivorans Mz5(T) and F. succinogenes S85 (+6.9%) and the coculture of C. cellulovorans and F. succinogenes S85 (+4.9%). Dark fermentation is a bioprocess driven by anaerobic bacteria that can produce hydrogen (H2) from organic waste and wastewater. This review analyses a relevant number of recent studies that have investigated dark fermentative H2 production from wastewater using two different types of anaerobic biofilm reactors: anaerobic packed bed reactor (APBR) and anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR). The effect of various parameters, including temperature, pH, carrier material, inoculum pretreatment, hydraulic retention time, substrate type and concentration, on reactor performances was investigated by a critical discussion of the results published in the literature. Also, this review presents an in-depth study on the influence of the main operating parameters on the metabolic pathways. The aim of this review is to provide to researchers and practitioners in the field of H2 production key elements for the best operation of the reactors. The pretreatment of wheat straw with potassium hydroxide (KOH) at ambient temperature (20°C) was investigated. The pretreatment effects on chemical composition and physical structures, and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion were evaluated. Wheat straw at 10% total solids (TS) was treated with KOH solution for 24h at a wide range of KOH loadings from 2% to 50% (w/w dry basis). Higher KOH loading resulted in higher lignin reduction from the straw and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the resulting black liquor. Maximum lignin reduction of 54.7% was observed at 50% KOH loading. In comparison to untreated straw, specific hydrolysis yields achieved 14.0-92.3% over the range of 2-50% KOH loading, and methane yields increased 16.7-77.5% for KOH loadings of 10-50%, respectively. Accounting for losses during pretreatment, 20% KOH loading resulted in maximum overall reducing sugar yield and methane yield and therefore is the recommended loading for pretreatment under these conditions., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Batch anaerobic digestion was employed to investigate the performance of the floatable oil (FO) skimmed from food waste (FW) and the effect of different FO concentrations (5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50g/L) on biomethane production and system stability. FO and FO+FW were mono-digested and co-digested. The results showed that FO and FO+FW could be well anaerobically converted to biomethane in appropriate loads. For the mono-digestions of FO, the biomethane yield, TS and VS reduction achieved 607.7-846.9mL/g, 69.7-89% and 84.5-92.8%, respectively, when FO concentration was 5-40g/L. But the mono-digestion appeared instability when FO concentration was 50g/L. For the co-digestions of FW+FO, TS and VS reductions reached 70.7-86.1% and 87.5-91.4%, respectively, when FO concentration was 5-30g/L. However, the inhibition occurred when FO concentrations increased to 40-50g/L. The combined effects of erythromycin-tetracycline-sulfamethoxazole (ETS) and sulfamethoxazole-tetracycline (ST) antibiotics on the performance of anaerobic sequencing batch reactors were studied. A control reactor was fed with wastewater that was free of antibiotics, while two additional reactors were fed with ETS and ST. The way in which the ETS and ST mixtures impact COD removal, VFA production, antibiotic degradation, biogas production and composition were investigated. The effects of the ETS mixtures were different from the ST mixtures, erythromycin can have an antagonistic effect on sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline. The anaerobic pre-treatment of these antibiotics can represent a suitable alternative to the use of chemical treatments for concentrations at 10 mg/L of S and 1 mg/L of T; 2 mg/L of E, 2 mg/L of T and 20 mg/L of S for the ST and ETS reactors respectively, which corresponds to min 70% COD removal efficiency., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Thermophilic microaerobic pretreatment (TMP) has been proved to be an alternative pretreatment method during anaerobic digestion (AD) of corn straw. In this study, in order to improve the fermentation efficiency during late AD stage, improve the methane yield and volatile solid (VS) removal efficiency, a secondary thermophilic microaerobic treatment (STMT) was applied in the late AD stage of corn straw. Results showed STMT obviously improved the fermentation efficiency, methane yield and VS removal efficiency. The maximum methane yield and maximum VS removal efficiency were simultaneously obtained when the oxygen loads during STMT was 10 ml/g VS (VS of residual substrate). The maximum methane yield was 380.6 ml/g VS(substrate), which was 28.45% and 10.61% higher than those of untreated and once thermophilic microaerobic pretreated samples, respectively. In this study, the influence of NaOH and thermal pretreatment of dewatered activated sludge (DAS) on the high-solid solubilisation and anaerobic digestion was separately investigated by monitoring common parameters. The results indicated that COD, proteins and carbohydrates were efficiently solubilised in both NaOH and thermal pretreated DAS samples. For NaOH pretreatment, the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) firstly increased followed by decreasing with NaOH dose increasing. However, they decreased with the severity of thermal pretreatment. During the batch digestion experiments (at 37°C), for 80mg NaOHg(-1) total solid (TS) DAS pretreatment it resulted in a 6.99% decrease in cumulative methane yield (CMY) compared to untreated DAS. The partial nitrification (PN) performance under high ammonium concentrations was evaluated in an airlift reactor (ALR). The ALR was operated for 253days with stepwise elevation of ammonium concentration to 1400mg/L corresponding nitrogen loading rate of 2.1kg/m(3)/d. The ammonium removal rate was finally developed to 2.0kg/m(3)/d with average removal efficiency above 91% and nitrite accumulation percentage of 80%. Results showed that the combined effect of limited DO, high bicarbonate, pH and free ammonia (FA) contributed to the stable nitrite accumulation substantially. The biomass in the ALR was improved with the inception of granulation. Precipitates on biomass surface was unexpectedly experienced which might improve the settleability of PN biomass. Organic functional groups attached to the PN biomass suggested the possible absorbability to different types of pollutant. The present study investigated the influences of three metabolic uncouplers (pCP, oCP and oNP) on excess activated sludge reduction and microbial products of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and intracellular storage product (polyhydroxybutyrate, PHB) in short-term tests. Results showed sludge was reduced 58.2%, 59.8% and 80.8%, respectively, at pCP, oCP and oNP concentrations of 20mg/L. The dosage of three uncouplers had no obviously influences on COD removal and sludge settleability, but had significant inhibition effect on ammonia removal, especially for oNP. Low concentration of pCP and oNP (5mg/L) dosing resulted in protein and polysaccharide content increased in EPS, however, they were decreased at high pCP and oNP concentrations (>5mg/L). To oCP, the protein content in EPS was increased linearly with oCP concentration. Furthermore, metabolic uncouplers addition stimulated the production of PHB. Novel high rate psychrophilic (20°C) anaerobic digestion (PAD) of undiluted cow feces (11.5-13.5% total solids) was demonstrated using sequence batch reactor in long-term operation with successive cycles of 21days treatment cycle length (TCL). At organic loading rates (OLR) 9.0, 10.0, 11.0 and 12.0g TCOD kg(-1) inoculum d(-1) average specific methane yield (SMY) was 154.0±11.7, 152.1±12.2, 126.0±2.8 and 116.0±6.1NL CH4 per kg of VS fed, respectively. Volatile solids removal averaged around 31.7±3.3%, 32.2±1.0%, 27.9±2.2% and 23.4±0.5%, respectively. Substrate-to-inoculum ratio (SIR; wet-mass basis) ranged between 1.17±0.06 and 1.43±0.05. Concentration of volatile fatty acids in the bioreactors during the TCL indicated that hydrolysis was the rate limiting reaction. High rate PAD of undiluted cow feces is possible at OLR (g TCOD kg(-1) inoculum d(-1)) 9.0 and 10.0 with a TCL of 21days; however, OLR of 11.0 and 12.0 are also possible but require longer TCL to maintain the SMY., (Crown Copyright © 2015. In order to investigate the effects of feedstock ratio and organic loading rate (OLR) on the anaerobic mesophilic co-digestion of rice straw (RS) and pig manure (PM), batch bottle tests (2.5L) were carried out at volatile solid (VS) ratios of 0:1, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, and 1:0 (RS/PM), and continuous bench experiments (40L) were carried out at OLRs of 3.0, 3.6, 4.2, 4.8, 6.0, 8.0, and 12.0kg VS/(m(3)d) with optimal VS ratio. The results showed that the optimal ratio was 1:1 in terms of biogas yield. Stable biogas production with an average specific biogas production of 413L/kg VS was obtained at an OLR of 3-8kg VS/(m(3)d). Anaerobic co-digestion was severely inhibited by the accumulation of volatile fatty acids when the OLR was 12kg VS/(m(3)d). To study the alkalization issue and its potential effects on high-load denitrifying system, the effects of operation mode on self-alkalization of high-load denitrifying reactor were investigated. The results showed that both the increase of substrate concentration and decrease of hydraulic retention time (HRT) can induce notable self-alkalization of high-load denitrification reactor (with the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) higher than 25kg Nm(-3)d(-1)). The effluent pH surpassed the 9.20 when the influent pH value was 7.0±0.1. The self-alkalization of denitrification process originated from the nitrate reduction, while the methanol oxidation could alleviate the self-alkalization by neutralizing OH(-) and setting up a buffering system of HCO3(-)/CO3(2-). At the same NLR, the self-alkalization induced by increase of substrate concentration was remarkably stronger than that induced by decrease of HRT. Acute and chronic effect as well as biodegradation potential at different sludge retention times (SRTs) of a priority pollutant, diclofenac on denitrification process was assessed. The continuous amendment of the culture for 6months with 1μg/L diclofenac resulted in 30% decrease in gas production. The average diclofenac removal observed in the diclofenac-acclimated culture was less than 15%. Batch tests showed that nitrate was removed in diclofenac free-control reactor at a higher rate compared to diclofenac amended reactor. Although, SRT did not have any progressive effect on diclofenac degradation, the system operated at low SRT was more sensitive to diclofenac and resulted in an increase in N2O emission. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operated at higher SRTs may tolerate and recover from the adverse effects of such micropollutants. Partial nitritation in sponge-bed trickling filters (STF) under natural air circulation was studied in two reactors: STF-1 and STF-2 operated at 30°C with sponge thickness of 0.75 and 1.50cm, respectively. The coexistence of nitrifiers and Anammox bacteria was obtained and attributed to the favorable environment created by the reactors' design and operational regimes. After 114days of operation, the STF-1 had an average NH4(+)-N removal of 69.3% (1.17kgN/m(3)sponged) and a total nitrogen removal of 52.2% (0.88kgN/m(3)sponged) at a Nitrogen Loading Rate (NLR) of 1.68kgN/m(3)sponged and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 1.71h. The STF-2 showed an average NH4(+)-N removal of 81.6 % (0.77kgN/m(3)sponged) and a total nitrogen removal of 54% (0.51kgN/m(3)sponged), at an NLR of 0.95kgN/m(3)sponged and HRT of 2.96h. The aim of this research was to evaluate the applicability of partial-nitritation/anammox processes for biological N removal from a centrifuge supernatant coming from a full scale anaerobic digester fed on a mixture of piggery manure, poultry manure, and agro-wastes. Stable partial nitritation was achieved at pilot-scale (650L SBR), obtaining a suitable influent for the anammox lab-scale SBR reactor (3L). The anammox lab scale reactor was fed with increasing fractions of the partial nitritation effluent, blended with synthetic wastewater. In the last 100days no dilution was used. The nitrogen loading rate applied to the anammox reactor was 0.5-0.6gNL(-)(1)d(-)(1) and the average nitrogen removal was 91±10%. During the first days of operation with undiluted supernatant, the maximum anammox activity in the SBR decreased, but recovered afterwards, suggesting the ability of the anammox biomass to acclimate to the wastewater. To solve the problem of extraction wastewater in citric acid industrial production, an improved integrated citric acid-methane production process was established in this study. Extraction wastewater was treated by anaerobic digestion and then the anaerobic digestion effluent (ADE) was stripped by air to remove ammonia. Followed by solid-liquid separation to remove metal ion precipitation, the supernatant was recycled for the next batch of citric acid fermentation, thus eliminating wastewater discharge and reducing water consumption. 130U/g glucoamylase was added to medium after inoculation and the recycling process performed for 10 batches. Fermentation time decreased by 20% in recycling and the average citric acid production (2nd-10th) was 145.9±3.4g/L, only 2.5% lower than that with tap water (149.6g/L). The average methane production was 292.3±25.1mL/g CODremoved and stable in operation.
